This August we will be coming to Florida for the Star Wars convention. Can't afford to do WDW so looking for other things to do.

Something in the back of my head says that you can ask your Senator for free tickets to Kennedy Space Center? Any truth to that is my brain fried? If you can get tickets....how do you do it?

Also...anything non-amusement park to do with a couple of homeschooled teenage girls? They love doing interesting museums, science centers, live theatre and are in Civil Air Patrol, so anything flying is cool too. They are not your typical teens that want to only play.....they truly love learning even on vacation, lol.......they just want something interesting.

Thanks for any suggestions.

I just got 4 free tickets by sending an email to my local House representative. I used the email form on her official website and had a response within 2 days. You need to give them basic information like your address, how many tickets you need, and when you plan to be there.

The tickets are good for 2 days, to KSC and the US Astronaut Hall of Fame.

We are going in August as well. There's a scheduled launch of an Atlas V-401 rocket on August 23, so I'm hoping to visit on that day.

We'll be there the week before that....Aug 23 is the first day of the Star Wars convention that we're going to so no way would my kids miss Star Wars for a real space shuttle....they're so obsessed. Wonder if I could sneak over and watch it while they do the convention (I'm NOT going...I like Star Wars older movies, but my interest wanes after that, lol).

Our senator got us free passes at will call.
They were for a specific day, and included all the movies, tour, etc.

I used the senator's website in August. We heard back in October that her staff was trying for tickets. And then got the confirmation code in December for a January visit.

Thought I'd follow up on this for anyone else interested in free tickets. We contacted both our local reps (one still has never replied). Our rep had never been asked about these so it took them some time to do the research and find out how to apply, but after about 2 weeks had the information and forwarded us a very quick application that was basically our name/address, how many in our group, and the dates we wanted to go.

One MAJOR thing to realize is that you must request tickets 6 MONTHS in advance....whew...we were at 6 months and 9 days when she sent us the application.

There is a limit of 4 tickets per request, but our rep suggested that if we wanted more than 4 to just have another adult submit an application as well. We only needed 4 so we didn't need to do that.

We got confirmation that we would get tickets less than a week later, but it said that we would hear from them in "a couple months" with the details of where to get our tickets. I was kinda expecting to get the tickets now, but whatever way it works.....my DH figures that people lose the tickets if they get them 6 months out (of course, us DIS have a planning binder to put them in, right, lol).

Anyway...if you're thinking about wanting to go to Kennedy Space Center, get your request in early....I'm just grateful that our rep didn't take any longer to figure out how to do it or we'd have missed that 6 month cut off.

Thank you for that info. Darn it, I just emailed my rep last week for a June trip, but maybe it will work? I won't be surprised or bummed if it doesn't now though. Glad you got info in on time!

Can International people avail of these free tickets?

Well, not sure about that but leaning towards probably not. You have to contact your State Representative to request them...and obviously you don't have a State Rep. I'm not really sure who to even have you contact to ask....maybe one of the Florida Representatives?

I'd assume not it sounds like it's part of the funding arrangement allowing govermental officals to provide free tickets, i can't see them doing naything similat to people outside of the US.

Six months in advance! Oh no!! We never plan that far out.

Anyone have luck getting the tickets quicker than six months?

Wow, how cool--I never knew this was something that was available. I just emailed our Representative. I hope they respond! We are *barely* six months out right now. Would be so great if we got the passes, as this was something on our definite to-do list anyway.

So thanks to this great thread, I emailed our Rep yesterday and heard back today. Thought I would share the info because it may be helpful...

What I was told via email is that you can request *UP TO* 6 months in advance. You cannot make the request until you are less than 6 months out, and it's first come, first served. You can request up to 4 tickets. And you need to give them an actual date when you want to go. It can be any day except a launch date or December 25th.

Hope that helps someone out! Fingers crossed that we get some tix. My son really wants to go and it would be wonderful to knock $150 off our budget.

Last year we went on a cruise and got the free tickets. We had a new rep. and they had to research the information. We printed our email from him and took it to the space center. The tickets were supposed to be at the ticket booth but were not there. We had our confirmation email from him and they accomodated us.:yay:

I contacted my local Representative in January for a June trip. They weren't familiar with the program, so they contacted Nasa, who provided them the information about the constituent tickets. We received our confirmation number in April. On the day of our visit, I took the email with the confirmation number to the group sales window at Kennedy. We received our tickets, with no problems whatsoever.

If your kids are interested in flying there's a place about halfway between Tampa and Orlando called Fantasy of Flight museum. DH and I both work for the airlines and stopped there a couple of years ago to check it out. They have some really great aircraft on display. Website is fantasyofflight.com Hope this helps:goodvibes

Just found out--our tickets for December are confirmed! Thanks so much to the DisBoards. This is something we had planned to do anyway, and now we are saving a ton on the tickets. Yay!

I was just wondering how you guys worded you letter. Did you say you heard there is a program or what did you say. My husband served for the military for 13 years so I was wondering whether I should throw that it. I am not good at asking for free things lol

Here is what I wrote. I think the real difference on getting the tickets is that your congressman's aid knows who to contract if they don't know about the program. Then if there are any tickets left for the date you would like to go. :confused3 I sent my letter a couple weeks early and they called and said on August 1st I will ask for you and they did :cool1:

I am writing you to ask a favor for our family. We will be going on a vacation to Florida in February. There is a program where our legislators can request free tickets to the Kennedy Space center for their constituents. I would really appreciate if you could try to get our family tickets. Since they only have a limited quantity available our best chance to get them is 6 months before our requested date.
If you have not heard of the program you would need to contact
Lisa Gibson
Legislative Affairs Specialist
Nasa HeadQuarters
Office of Legislative and Intergovernmental Affairs
202-358-1967 office
202-358- 4343 fax

We would be traveling February 8-Februay 18.1012. We would need 2 adult tickets and 2 more ticket for our kids. They would be ages 11 and 12 at the time we are traveling. If we need to pick a specific day to go our first choice would be Friday February 15th and our second choice would be Tuesday February 12th.

Thanks so much for assisting our family with this.

Good Luck!!!

He is my congressman. He had a contact for tours of Washington DC on his website and I sent a email to that contact. Then mailed the same letter to his office. To be honest I'm not sure which worked. I did sent it a couple of weeks early incase I had to try a congressman from a different district or a senator but he came through.

Thank you so much for all the information about how to contact your congressman and request tickets (including the example letter). My congresswoman also has a tour and tickets section on her site. Everything is for "D.C.", however, I am going to utilize this and write in the notes my dates are for Florida/Kennedy Space Center at my 6 month mark.

We attempted to see shuttle launches a couple of times (and actually managed it once!). We kept talking to people who had launch tickets from their reps and got to be on Space Centre property on launch days. I was very jealous!

We are Canadian. Because of Canada's participation in various NASA projects, I wonder if anyone has ever gotten tickets via our MPs and the Canadian Space Agency. Not that anyone here could answer that, but it's an interesting question.
