We have two papers and only one or two of these people seem to see the same movies I do. I don't understand it. I go to a movie to be ENTERTAINED. I don't care if it is like some other movie or whatever. I choose movies on the idea and then go to see if the actors and director can entertain me and convince me they are who they pretend to be. I am seldom disappointed but some movies stand out as gems. My Big Fat Greek Wedding is one of those.
I have stopped reading the reviews. I pick up bits and pieces on TV and on the internet and make my decisions that way.
Last weekend I let kids see *******...after a disagreement with DH who said it was okay for them. So I saw "Below" by myself. I liked it. No huge stars but quiet well done.

I NEVER listen to the reviews in magazines or newspapers. I depend more on the reviews of people I know. I think reviewers go into a movie anticipating NOT liking it and they have to read all kinds of hidden messages into the movie.
The best (worst) review I read was years ago for Disney's Beauty And The Beast talking about how it wasn't good for girls to see because Belle was "bending" to the wishes of the male Beast and that was sending such a negative image to our young girls that they have to be sub servient(sp) to males!!! PLEASE!! it was a cartoon!!

I listen to them, but I don't count on them to know my tastes.
I rent the movies.
Not much money spent if I dont like it, and if it's not appropriate for my girls, I send them out of the room. lol

If the movie reviewers recommend it, I don't go, If they tell me how bad the movie is, we go, Just MHO! Everyones taste in movies is different, when I go to a movie, I want to laugh and be entertained. :bounce: :Pinkbounc :bounce: :Pinkbounc :bounce: :Pinkbounc :bounce: :Pinkbounc

rajak73 - that's the same way WE use reviews.
I really don't care about some pseudo-intellectual telling me what is good and what isn't. If I leave entertained, then it was good. I don't really care about their opinion -- and if they had real talent, they would actually be creating better entertainment, not ripping apart others efforts!

I respect the opinions of all reviewers but rely on the opinions of select critics who've shown over time to have tastes and views in line with mine.
Sometimes, I'll just go anyway. :)

i don't use them to decide whether or not i will go see a movie. the reviewer in the paper that i most commonly read has the exact opposite opinion as me. he seems to hate EVERYTHING. i go to most movies to be entertained. i think that reviewers should review a movie based on it's entertainment value, not based on revolutionary filmmaking. when great filmmaking does occur, i highly value that. but for the most part, i just want to be entertained, even if it "has been done a hundred times before."
