Welcome everyone! With this start of a trip report, I can promise you one thing. I will START the trip report. I cannot promise that it will be complete, because I have a bad habit of not completing trip reports. So I apologize in advance.
I'm going through our photos and remembering the very special time we had on our December 2011 trip, and I was really tempted to share the photos and memories. So that's why I'm starting this report.
My Pre-Trip Report can be found here. (http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2681633) But in case you're new to my family and me, I'll introduce the cast of characters.
We have Chris (aka Dude), my husband, who enjoys all things Disney and Disney World as much as I do.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c324/sgwilson/Disney/Disney%202011/DSC00789.jpg
Katie, our daughter, who is 19 and a sophomore at the University of Colorado. She may not admit it, but she loves Disney and Disney World too. Right now, she just might be a little too cool for it.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c324/sgwilson/Disney/Disney%202011/DSC00917.jpg
Haley, my niece, who is 16 and hopes to work at Disney World one day. Her near-term goal is to get into the College Program at WDW.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c324/sgwilson/Disney/Disney%202011/DSC00662.jpg
Joann, my sister and Haley's mom, who also loves Disney and WDW. She may never grow up :)
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c324/sgwilson/Disney/Disney%202011/DSC00938.jpg
And there's me, Susan. I have always loved all things Disney. This was my 10th trip to WDW.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c324/sgwilson/Disney/Disney%202011/DSC00878.jpg
Our trip started with the gift to Haley. She has been dying to go to WDW since her last trip when she was 7 years old. So we decided to give it to her as a birthday/Christmas gift (her birthday is in January). Our dates were December 16-22, 2011.
We stayed at the Polynesian Resort, for which we were super excited. It was the first time for any of us to stay there. We also tacked on a day to the front, where we stayed at the Hard Rock Hotel and visited Universal Orlando.
I built in 3 surprises for the girls. The first one was that I added an extra day to the trip. I had planned not to tell them until the day we were supposed to be leaving, but I ended up having to tell them as we were planning. It made it easier to make our at-home holiday plans and for everyone to plan their packing.
So come along and join the Christmastime fun! I'll share stories and photos about what we did, and I'll share how we deviated from my plans (because, as they say, the best laid plans... well, anyway).

Day 1, Part 1 (December 16)
We started with a well-planned morning, which quickly went to "pot". Chris and I had an appointment at our chiropractor, and we would have a couple of hours after that to do some work clean-up and catch up and last-minute packing.
But we got a call at 8:15 that my mom needed transportation to her dialysis appointment, due to a snafu at her assisted living facility, and that started a domino effect. By noon, we were on the road to pick up Joann and Haley at their house, then head to the airport.
At the airport, parking and check-in were a piece of cake, and Santa was on-site, courtesy of Southwest. When you're traveling with teens, you never quite know what you're gonna get (they can be a little moody), and in this case, everyone was up for the free photo with Santa. Except Katie. Katie says "all Santas are pedophiles." And she had no interest in having a photo made with him.
Well, at the end of the day, we convinced her to pose for the picture, and Santa said he would not pose for the photo unless someone sat on his lap (which Katie says is further proof he's a pedophile), and here's what we got.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c324/sgwilson/DIS%20pics/Santa1.jpg
Awesome, huh? Isn't the look on Haley's face awesome? She's like "why am I sitting on a pedophile's lap?"
After the photo, we each grabbed a snack/lunch and boarded the plane. Chris and I sat in a window and center seat, and Joann, Katie and Haley sat a few rows behind us. That flight had more children than I've ever seen on a plane. I am guessing it was about 2/3 kids. No issues - most were well-behaved. I always feel sorry for the babies who don't understand why their ears are hurting. :(
Next up: Arriving at MCO and the 1st big surprise for the girls.

Day 1, Part 2 (December 16)
I left a couple of things out of the first chapter.
1 - As we were leaving our house, Chris grabbed his mouse ears Santa hat and wore it for the first half of our trip. Including the car ride to the airport.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c324/sgwilson/Disney/Disney%202011/Chrissantahat.jpg
2 - When Joann and Haley got into our car, I asked her if she had her sunglasses. She responded "uh...yes! Why is everyone asking me that? Mom has asked me already this morning to make sure I have my sunglasses." Then, to be funny, about five minutes and 3 conversations later, Chris asked Haley, "hey Haley, do you have your sunglasses?" She rolled her eyes. (This becomes important later in the day.)
When we arrived at the Orlando airport, we deplaned and rode our first "monorail" to the baggage claim. We didn't get to use our Magical Express luggage tags, and we had to pick up our own luggage from the carousel. But for good reason - we were headed to Universal before our Disney trip officially began!
So we rode down to baggage claim and I discretely let everyone walk ahead of me to baggage claim, while I spoke to the nice gentleman in the suit holding the sign that said "Wilson Party". Thankfully, the girls did not see him, and I somehow convinced him to play the role of the "taxi driver", as this was to be the first of 2 big surprises for the girls.
The driver helped us pick up our luggage and we headed out to the "taxi". When we walked out the back doors and rounded the corner around a large van/bus, the girls stopped dead in their tracks when they saw
THE LIMO!!
Katie said "whoa, is this our ride?" And Haley said something to the effect of "this is cool!" (I don't remember the exact words, but they were in typical teen fashion.)
They were thrilled that this was their first surprise. Some photos of the limo:

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c324/sgwilson/Disney/Disney%202011/DSC00598.jpg
We had fun on the ride, acting like rock stars, pretending we had champagne, playing with the lights and the stereo. When we arrived at the Hard Rock Hotel, I asked the girls to put on their sunglasses, so we could get the "Kardashians exiting the limousine at the Hard Rock" paparazzi shot.

I've always thought about getting a limo but was afraid it would cost too much. That is so cool.We were getting a town car/Escalade anyway, which isn't much more expensive than a cab (and worth it for the convenience), and I upgraded for about $40 total. For 5 people, that's not a bad splurge. It was worth it for our group.

how fun! Can't wait for more and I'm really dying to know what you thought of the Poly.I know you do hair, so you probably know more about Haley's color than I do. We were in one line behind a hair stylist and I overheard Haley and my sister talking to her about it. She first went to Tony & Guy and had it bleached and colored. Then, as that grew out, my sister started doing the color on the roots and the revision over-all. She said she uses peroxide and 40V. She can't get it in the US because she doesn't have a stylist card, so she orders it from the UK. The hair stylist in line with us said the 40V just doesn't make sense, but I guess it works for Haley. Haley also said that she mixes a little of (some sort of) color in with her shampoo every time, shampoos only every 3 days, and uses a shower cap on the "off" days. Sounds high maintenance to me :)
Oh we loved the Poly. Coming up in an update soon.

Day 1, Part 3 (December 16)
While the rest of the group explored the lobby of the Hard Rock Hotel, I got us all checked in. A funny thing happened here (and this shows you one of the ways Universal is different from Disney). The host was printing our room keys (which work as Express Passes - like Fast Passes at Disney) and asked me for the names of everyone in our party. So I rattled them off. Then he handed me 5 room keys, complete with names. Our last name is Wilson, but that's not Katie's last name, and it's obviously not my sister's and Haley's. The room keys ALL said Wilson. So, for example, Haley was "Haley Wilson". We laughed about that the whole time we were at Universal.
After checking in, I headed over to a kiosk and printed our park tickets and CityWalk "party passes" (which came with our hotel/park ticket package). Then we set off to find our room. We had a "standard view" room that sleeps 5 with a roll-away bed. Our view wasn't too bad, as we could see the lights of Universal Studios Orlando and Rip Ride Rockit (soon to become my least favorite roller coaster of all time - more on that later - but pretty to see at night). We did some minimal unpacking and set out for our dinner reservation.
I'm guessing it was approaching 7pm and our reservation was not until 8, so we weren't in a hurry. At first, we thought we'd wait for the water taxi from the hotel to CityWalk. While we were waiting, I took these pics of the Hard Rock Hotel.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c324/sgwilson/Disney/Disney%202011/DSC00608.jpg
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c324/sgwilson/Disney/Disney%202011/DSC00609.jpg
Then, we got impatient and decided to take the short stroll over to CityWalk. It's really not a bad walk, and it was a really nice evening.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c324/sgwilson/Disney/Disney%202011/DSC00610.jpg
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c324/sgwilson/Disney/Disney%202011/DSC00611.jpg
We explored CityWalk a little, then went searching for my lost shaker of salt at our dinner spot.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c324/sgwilson/Disney/Disney%202011/DSC00612.jpg
We checked in and were told there was approximately a 20-minute wait and given a pager. Chris headed for a bar and the rest of us shopped in the store for a while. They have some cute stuff in there. Something is wrong with the clocks at Universal, but I'm not complaining, because our wait was less than 5 minutes!
We got a great table with a nice view. We all loved the atmosphere and the food. I would say the food there is above average. Good, but not excellent.
There were a male and female stilt-walker moving around the dining room, making balloon animals for the kids. The guy came by our table and let Katie try on his hat.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c324/sgwilson/Disney/Disney%202011/DSC00613.jpg
Then he made a balloon flower for Haley and we tried to tip him a couple of dollars. He said he appreciated it but could not accept the tip. :confused3
We all enjoyed our dinner and then moved on to show the girls the rest of CityWalk. Haley loves to sing, so I was really excited to get her over to the karaoke (with a live band) club (I think it's called Rising Star). And we all had our CityWalk Party Passes in hand and were ready to roll.
How would Karaoke go? Would Haley sing?
Next up... CityWalk and the resorts at night

Side Story - Trip Report Title
Before we go further, I thought I'd explain the title of this trip report, since we won't get to it until Day 4 of our trip.
On our Epcot day, we got to watch a little bit of Miyuki at the Japan pavilion. If you haven't heard of her, Miyuki is a candy artist who makes beautiful animals from a taffy-like candy. This was the first time any of us had seen her, and she and her work are quite fascinating.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c324/sgwilson/Disney/Disney%202011/DSC00872.jpg
After watching Miyuki for awhile, I got tickled that she repeated the same phrases over and over. For example, she would say (I'm going to try to spell this out phonetically so you can sort-of hear it) "I so you how to make...Florida flamingo" or "I so you how to make... pretty panda". When she finished and item she would hold it up and say "it so nice!"
So that became one of the catch phrases of our trip. From that point on, when we were in line, eating dinner, or just hanging out, one of us would say "I so you how to make...Buzz Lightyear" or "I so you how to make... zebra domes". And thus, the title of my trip report.
With each installment, "I show you how to make... (insert topic here)". I hope you enjoy!
Next up... I stole some pics from Haley's Facebook, so I'll add them here, backtracking a little, until we catch back up to our dinner at Margaritaville.

Try to see her when you get back. It's worth the time to watch her. She used to give the candy to people watching, but I think the board of health made Disney stop letting her sometime in 2010.

Day 1, Part 4 (December 16)
When we left Margaritaville, we decided to walk around CityWalk and show the girls the various clubs, etc. I remembered that when we were there in 2010, the karaoke club (Rising Star) was a 16-and-up club and most of the others (except maybe the Groove) were 18-and-up. So we thought that, with our party passes in hand (which came with our Universal Vacation Packages), we would at least be able to go to Rising Star.
We walked in the semi-circle, past Latin Quarter (which we noticed includes churrascaria dining), The Groove, Pat O’Briens and City Jazz. While the rest of the group was checking out Bob Marley’s, I approached the doorman at Rising Star and asked him about the minimum age. It was still early, and he said that at 10pm, all of the clubs would become 21-and-over.
We were a little disappointed, but that was ok. We were tired from travel and would find something else to do. We continued around the bend and stopped into Hart & Huntington tattoo parlor. We saw a man getting a chest tattoo (that does not look fun), and talked about what we would get if we were ever to get a tattoo. We kinda like Hart & Huntington because we’re Supercross fans and Carey Hart has the dirt bike connection.
We shopped just a little more, and I think Joann picked up a thing or two at one of the jewelry kiosks. Then we decided to go check out the Portofino Bay Resort.
A photo as we left CityWalk

This resort is just beautiful.
There was a large Christmas tree out on the plaza.

And as we walked by, the carolers were out as part of the holiday celebration.

There were also stilt-walkers.

We weren’t in any hurry, so we strolled inside to look for the lobby. This was a fountain close to the main lobby.

We thought this resort was beautiful and might consider staying there one day, but right now, we like the liveliness and energy of the Hard Rock better. The Portofino Bay felt a little deserted.
We decided to walk back to the Hard Rock (a very short walk), rather than taking the water taxi. I guess I did in fact take a couple of pictures of their lobby tree that I loved so much.

Back at the HRH, we grabbed a cocktail at the Velvet Room and explored the hotel a little. We walked out and around the pool, which is very nice. As I expected, the girls got a kick out of the music memorabilia. Katie spent some time in the little grab-and-go market, planning her breakfast for the next day. Haley and Joann shopped in the little HRH shop.
Then we all went up to our room, got ourselves situated, and relaxed for an early evening in bed.
Next up… Our first and only rope drop morning. My family is NOT a rope drop family. Would we make it?

I am really enjoying your trip report! Love the title and your family sounds like tons of fun!:welcome: So glad you are along for the ride! The title really represents the vacation in so many ways, so I think it's PERFECT!
Gorgeous decorations.
Sad about the Rising Star.
With those two girls, I'm going to guess a no on the rope drop?It was fun looking at the decorations. And not going to Rising Star wasn't a downer. We got to see the other resort and spend some time at HRH. Plus, it's a reason to go back when they're old enough!
My Dh would love the HRH he plays guitar and loves music! I will have to stay there one time with him! Next trip with them I will have to see Universal! I love all of the details... I didn't know that they did as many as Disney!
I'm loving all of the pictures too! HRH is really cool. I didn't take pics of all of the memorabilia. My favorites were a wall dedicated to the Stones, and a jacket worn by Eddie Vedder.
I think US really tries to compete with Disney on many levels. (They miss, in my opinion, on customer experience.)

Day 2, Part 1 (December 17)
It’s Saturday, and our first park day is finally here! Back when we planned our trip, we were going to stay 5 nights at the Polynesian. Then we got a whim and decided that if we’re going to be so close to Universal, the girls should see the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. So we decided to add a night at the Hard Rock, to make it easier for us to get to WWoHP early, plus we got early entry (1 hour early) as resort guests, plus we got to use our room keys as Express Passes (like fast pass, but they are unlimited use) on all rides except two: Forbidden Journey of Harry Potter and Rip-Ride-Rockit roller coaster at Universal.
We collectively decided that we didn’t want to spend much more time at Universal than the day to see WWoHP, because our main purpose was Disney, but there were a couple of things we wanted to do at Universal Studios Orlando, so we got the 1-day park-to-park ticket.
My family does not like commando-style touring, and I learned long ago not to make many plans, and to keep the ones I make as loose as possible. Otherwise I get all stressed out when MY plans don’t materialize. So I had only made a few concrete plans for this trip. Mostly ADRs.
But we had no choice but to make this Saturday our Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios Orlando day.
Islands of Adventure opened at 9am that day, and with our on-site stay, we were allowed early admission at 8am.
Because everyone knew I was adamant about getting going by 7:30am, it was surprisingly easy to get them up. I woke Katie up when I got up and she went to grab a light breakfast from the little grab-and-go she had scoped out the night before, while I showered and everyone else got moving. By 7:30 we were all packed up and ready to go.
We took our stuff down and checked it with bell services and started our walk over to IOA. Along the way, Katie spotted this Maserati in the HRH valet section. I think she declared it “hers”.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c324/sgwilson/Disney/Disney%202011/DSC00626.jpg
We had decided that if a water taxi was there when we arrived, we would take it, but otherwise, we’d just walk. And we did, very casually and in no rush. It was amusing to us how so many others were power-walking or even running past us.
There’s a bag check just outside of USO and CityWalk, so I guess that takes care of checking bags for both parks. It was nice not to get caught up in a big bag check like we see at WDW.
Arriving at USO (we had to pass the entrance to get to IOA)
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c324/sgwilson/Disney/Disney%202011/DSC00627.jpg
When we got to the gate at 7:45, it was open and people were streaming in. Hundreds of people, all with one mission – to bee-line it over to Forbidden Journey.
Here’s a photo just inside the main gate.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c324/sgwilson/Disney/Disney%202011/DSC00628.jpg
And a windmill atop one of the buildings in the Port of Entry, which I thought was cool.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c324/sgwilson/Disney/Disney%202011/DSC00629.jpg
We passed by the entrance to the Seuss area of the park, where they do the Grinchmas celebration.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c324/sgwilson/Disney/Disney%202011/DSC00630.jpg
We followed the flow of traffic, but again, not in a huge hurry. I thought it was better for the girls to just take it all in around themselves. And it did turn out very cool when we waltzed (rather than ran full speed) up to the entrance of WWoHP and they could really take it in. It’s like the whole world opens up around you and suddenly you’re immersed in a J K Rowling book.

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c324/sgwilson/Disney/Disney%202011/DSC00631.jpg
We stopped at the entrance and took a few photos.

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c324/sgwilson/Disney/Disney%202011/DSC00635.jpg
(An interesting story about Katie’s shirt. She shares it with a group of girlfriends. They call it “the travel shirt”. They made it themselves and it fits all of them. When any of them travel, they pick a day (or more) and wear it, making sure to get a photograph where they are. I think this is a very cool concept.)
Again, we were amused at the people rushing by us. I can’t figure out what was so important. The line for FJ was very short, so I’m not sure the benefit of rushing.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c324/sgwilson/Disney/Disney%202011/392336_2706997869946_1106771229_32890945_194336222 8_n.jpg

None of the shops were open yet. Three Broomsticks was serving breakfast, but I believe it was only for the people who had purchased the Harry Potter Vacation Package. Here’s a photo of Three Broomsticks.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c324/sgwilson/Disney/Disney%202011/406357_2707000870021_1106771229_32890951_135074662 8_n.jpg
Funny, I never noticed the actual three broomsticks outside!
Our first goal was to get to Olivander’s. I thought this was more important, since they only take about 30 people at a time for a 10-20-minute show, and the wait can get quite long. I figured, being there an hour before the main crowds got there, we would have plenty of time to do Olivander’s first, then ride FJ at least once.
When we got to Olivander’s, there was already a line of about 30 people, so we would obviously be in the 2nd group to enter. But as we went to line up, someone mentioned that they wouldn’t open until 8:30. I think it was still just about 8 or 8:05 at this time. So we all decided to go ahead and ride Forbidden Journey.
Again, there was no huge rush, so we took some photos along the way. It’s amazing how well-done this section of the park is. I just love it.

Love the update. It was a great tour!
We (kids and I) were into HP a couple of years ago. We watched the movies and dh and I took them to see the second to last at the theater. I was hoping they'd want to start reading the series soon.
One of these summers, I want to do it the way you did: add a night at the beginning of our trip to do Universal.
I like that you went early but took your time. I think when you go early to a park, it allows you to take your time!
Your daughter and her friends have a cool idea with the shirt! (Was it inspired by Sisterhood of Travelling Pants?) Do they put the pictures in a scrapbook? (I teach high school, and I love the awesome ways teen girls expres their friendship!)
Looking forward to the rest of your report!

I know not a thing about Harry Potter. I've never read one of the books nor seen one of the movies. Maybe if the girls get into them later, I will do that to keep up with them.
The travel shirt is a cute idea. :goodvibesI think if you ever got to go to WWOHP, you would want to watch at least the first movie before going. It would all make more sense to you that way.
Looking forward to the rest of your report!Adding a night the first night is the way to go. It's not exactly Disney, so it gives you something to look forward to.
I am not sure where the girls got that idea. It is cool though, and even more meaningful now that they are all over the country at different colleges. I am not sure if they'll do a scrapbook, but they share them on Facebook.

Day 2, Part 2 (December 17)
We walked into Hogwarts Castle and prepared for our broomstick flight by stowing our bags. I like how they have this set up, but for first-timers, it’s a little confusing which direction to go.
The queue for the Forbidden Journey is designed to take about 40 minutes to get through, if you carefully examine everything around you, and see all of the pre-shows. It is all done so very well. The week after Christmas, Chris, Katie and I watched all of the Harry Potter movies again, in order. Watching them, it is amazing to see how close the WWoHP resembles the movies.
With a 10-minute wait, we pretty much just walked through the queue. There wasn’t much time to stop and take it all in. The girls really enjoyed seeing everything. I didn’t take many pictures this time, but I think I’ll show you some from our 2010 trip.
The greenhouse

It’s amazing how they made something so new look so worn.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c324/sgwilson/Disney/2010/DSC00731.jpg
Some of those screaming plants in the greenhouse (these didn’t scream, but I think they’re caged so they won’t hurt the visitors).
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c324/sgwilson/Disney/2010/DSC00735.jpg
This is how they kept track of which house is in the lead.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c324/sgwilson/Disney/2010/DSC00738.jpg
I think it’s Slytherin (green), Ravenclaw (blue), Gryffindor (red) and Hufflepuff (yellow)
Since I’m not up to speed on my Harry Potter terminology, I’m not guessing at what this is.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c324/sgwilson/Disney/2010/DSC00739.jpg
I thought this tapestry was neat.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c324/sgwilson/Disney/2010/DSC00740.jpg
Then I noticed it in one of the movies after we got home.
The portrait room. Most of them moved and spoke.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c324/sgwilson/Disney/2010/DSC00741.jpg
Here’s the Headmaster’s Office, where Dumbledore welcomed us (briefly, since we walked through before he finished talking to us).
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c324/sgwilson/Disney/2010/DSC00742.jpg
The Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c324/sgwilson/Disney/2010/DSC00744.jpg
I wish I had more pictures of this classroom, but I’m not sure they would have turned out. This is the room where Harry, Ron and Hermione come out from under the invisibility cloak and talk to us about how boring the upcoming lecture is and how we should instead skip school and go to a Quiddich match instead. What I love about this room is that they cast some spells, and it ends up snowing at one point. Unfortunately, we missed the snow this time because we were moving so quickly.
Finally, we approached the Sorting Hat.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c324/sgwilson/Disney/2010/DSC00748.jpg
I thought maybe the Hat would tell us which house we were assigned to, but alas, it didn’t. It just told us a few safety precautions as we approached our “enchanted benches”.
At last, we were about to climb aboard the actual ride. In 2010, Chris and I were absolutely floored by how this ride was done. It is pretty amazing.
Next, what did the girls and Joann think? And what were Chris’s and my “second” impressions of the Forbidden Journey ride?

OMG! I am not sure what happened. I WAS subscribed!!! Well, now that that is fixed... I am caught up...
So... Miyuki... OMG! I noticed the same thing. She repeats and it is so cute. "very nice" was a common phrase we heard the ONE time we got to see her. (not on this last trip)
Sorry that the girls would have been too young for Rising Start by the end of the night.
Portofino looked BEAUTIFUL!!!
I am glad your family went along with getting up for RD. I think that it is hard for those who do not like to be on a schedule. So :woohoo:
FJ looks amazing. Someday I might have to go back to US/IOA... but to be honest, I read the sign and FJ might be WAY too intense for me. :goodvibes

Great Photos! It was our first time in HP world so we did not know what to expect. I'll talk more about it in my TR but I remember the queue being really confusing at first and almost wishing there had been a bit of a wait because I feel like we missed so much going through the castle. I didn't even know that it snowed!! Wish we had been able to see that. :wizard:

Fun trip report so far. Great details about HP. I'm not sure when I'll convince DH to go over there on a trip, maybe a solo trip for me? :)
Anyway, I stopped by your TR specifically because I love the title! We always watch Miyuki and enjoy her presentation. Last time my daughter asked her to make a seagull, but she didn't know that word. :goodvibes it was funny with people in the audience trying to explain, but in the end I think she made a parrot.

FJ looks amazing. Someday I might have to go back to US/IOA... but to be honest, I read the sign and FJ might be WAY too intense for me. :goodvibesI've been missing you here! Glad you figured it out. FJ isn't really very intense as a ride (the movements). It's more intense with the dark effects and scary stuff. Kinda like a little scarier HM.

Day 2, Part 3 (December 17)
You can read a good description of the ride itself here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Potter_and_the_Forbidden_Journey
It goes pretty quickly, and there is a lot to take in. The mechanism is basically a series of robotic arms that move along a track. Each arm has a car that holds four people, moves independently and can move in many directions – up, down, side to side, a little tremble here or there. This particular ride does not go upside-down, although I think the mechanism would allow it if programmed that way.
The girls’ reaction to the ride was “it was cool.” Not “it was SO cool.” Not “I can’t wait to do it again.” Just “it was cool.” Almost like “it was cool, now let’s move on.” I had thought that we would ride FJ at least twice while we were there, but we never got back to it. For that reason, I’m sad that we missed so much of the queue and pre-show. But that’s ok. Plenty more fun to be had.
Chris thought it was fun, but kinda had a “been there/done that” attitude. I didn’t remember the ride being so dark, in the sense of scary. Lots of darkness, wind, giant spiders and dementors (like grim reapers). They might consider warning families with small children, although I didn’t see any kids crying or scared afterward.
It is fun at the part where you’re flying through and past Hogwarts on the broomstick, over the fields, through canyons and into the Quiddich ring.
Katie, Haley and Joann shopped in the store at the end of the ride, while I gathered our belongings from the locker. We met outside and decided to head back to Ollivander’s, since it was now after 8:30 and they would be open.
We got in line, while Chris went exploring WWOHP (read: hit the men’s room). Some photos while we were in line:

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c324/sgwilson/Disney/Disney%202011/DSC00642.jpg
We waited through two shows (my best guess is that these are about 12 minutes long). They take 30 people at a time. The Team Member (I think that’s what they call them at US, rather than Cast Members) at the front of the line had a counter in her hand that she clicked, and we were stopped right at the front of the line.
We struck up a conversation with her, and watched as she had to repeat a description of this attraction over and over to person after person who approached her asking why there is a line to get into a store. She had a lot of patience.
We talked about lots of things with her, Haley’s hair, crowds at WWoHP, what she does when she’s not working, etc. While we were chatting, Chris walked up and talked with all of us. He didn’t hop in line with us, because none of us thought that would be appropriate (though we saw PLENTY of people doing this throughout our trip).
Now, we didn’t do Ollivander’s in 2010, but we knew the premise. It is the wand shop, where every Hogwarts student goes to purchase his/her requisite wand for the school year. And, in case you don’t know Harry Potter, a student does not choose his/her wand. The wand chooses the student.
So, for each “show”, the Team Members usually select one person from the audience, usually a child, and he approaches the shopkeeper to have his wand select him. Such a cool concept. And excellent marketing on the part of Universal, I might say. Because of course, after you are chosen by a wand, you feel compelled to purchase it. And these things aren’t cheap. They are around $30 each!
Back to the front door. It was our turn now. The door opened, and the inside TM talked to the TM who has been chatting with us for 12 minutes. They whispered something in code, and we were allowed inside.
Once inside, they positioned our family on the far left side, facing the shopkeeper. Katie somehow got behind Chris and me, so we told her to step forward so she’d be able to see the “show”. Now she and Haley were standing side by side. Not front and center in the room, but over to the side. About 25 people filed in behind us and filled the room.
The door closed, and the shopkeeper welcomed us in a mysterious, gravelly voice with a British accent. He said a few words, then paused for a moment. He looked slowly around the room, and finally pointed at Katie and Haley with two fingers saying “you two fine ladies, please step forward.”

Day 2, Part 4 (December 17)
I am not sure how they select people for this show, but we suspect that, for us, it had something to do with the nice conversation we had with the TM at the front door, and that the code she spoke with the “inside” TM told him to select our girls.
So Katie and Haley approached the shopkeeper’s counter and listened carefully as he explained that he was happy to see them and that a wand would carefully select each of them.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c324/sgwilson/Disney/Disney%202011/DSC00644.jpg
He first found a wand way up high at the top of a ladder. He uttered some magical words…
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c324/sgwilson/Disney/Disney%202011/DSC00645.jpg
And the box shook a little, moved in and out, and I think fell on the ground. Hmm, not the right wand.
On to another.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c324/sgwilson/Disney/Disney%202011/DSC00647.jpg
Something else strange happened here (I don’t remember what, because I was trying to take pictures in a very dark room). Needless to say, that also was not the right wand for our sweet wizard girls.
Finally, the shopkeeper handed his own wand to Katie and asked her to repeat “wingardium levioso”.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c324/sgwilson/Disney/Disney%202011/DSC00648.jpg
When she did, the box to which her wand was pointed moved a little, and the shopkeeper retrieved it, along with another for Haley. He explained that although each of these wands was made of different wood, they shared cores of the same dragon’s hair.
We were then ushered into the next room, which was the actual store where you can purchase a wand. Joann bought Haley’s wand immediately. Katie and I decided not to buy hers, because we weren’t sure what a 19-year-old would do with a $30 wand once we got home. But we met Chris outside the store, and when we told him the girls had been selected for the show, he insisted that Katie buy her wand. So we did go back and buy it. And I have to admit it makes a good souvenir. It is one-of-a-kind (sorta) and represents a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Next up: a very scary book and an evil Lord
