Hello and welcome! If you haven’t been following my PTR "Before the Shenanigans..." (http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2818393), this is the story of two divas and their whirlwind World excursion. Come along with us as we travel to Canada, Morocco, China, Japan and even THE FUTURE! And top it off with a visit to a very wet and rainy old Hollywood.

For those of you who aren’t inclined to read the PTR (but, really, how will you sleep if you don’t?), the cast of characters is Erica (celebrating her 18th birthday) and me (Laura, Erica’s aunt, considerably older than 18.) I live about an hour’s drive from WDW (lucky me), have an AP (luckier me), and visit the Main Mouse frequently (luck jackpot!). Erica lives in Virginia, has only been WDW twice before, and is like sunshine on a cloudy day. Stop me now before I launch into a touching rendition of “My Girl”! Here is Erica through the years…

And this is your intrepid trip reporter, moi:

Now that we’ve all been introduced, let the frivolity commence!

There’s nothing quite like the thrill of waking up and knowing that finally, after months of planning, changing, and re-planning, Disney Day has dawned. It’s like your birthday and Christmas rolled into one, only better because this party lasts more than just one day!

I stayed up late the night before Disney Day, finishing up some work stuff, and slept a little later than I’d anticipated. I didn’t have to be at the airport until 11:55 (or so I thought) so I was putzing around the house, lingering over coffee, checking the Dis, and updating my facebook status. You know, all the important stuff. I noticed that my sister left me a facebook message, “Call me…I have new flight info, and Erica appears to be the only one with your new cell phone number.” Umm, OK, but my “new” cell phone number is over a year old. And you have called it on numerous occasions. But whatever! I called her, and she clued me in on the fact that Mom and Erica were able to hop an earlier flight and would be touching down in Orlando at 11 a.m., NOT 11:55. My first thought: Yay! More Disney time! My second thought: Holy crap, I need to get a move on!

I am a very organized person. I like sticking with the plan I’ve so meticulously mapped out. So Gabriel (my BF) had a great time watching me try to get dressed, brush my teeth, and put makeup on simultaneously.

FYI FWIW: toothpaste doesn’t work well as foundation. Never brush your teeth with the mascara wand. Also, jeans zip up in the front.

I was out the door in record time, but even if I were to speed (which I would never do, and I have no idea why my family calls me Lead Foot Laura), there was no way I would get to the airport before they landed. They’d just have to wait for me. There’s a first time for everything. So, I was driving at the legally posted speed limit (hey, it could happen) and I noticed that I was well below a quarter of a tank of gas. Now, I don’t like getting below half a tank, but Gabriel used my car last and neglected to fill it back up. I work from home, so I don’t go out every day, and the last time I drove it, the tank was half full. At this point, I was on the beach line, which has very few exits. I thought there was one, but mile after mile went by, and no exit. Lots of toll booths, but no exit. Cows and horses, but no exit. A couple of cars broke down (or out of gas) on the side of the road, but no exit. The low fuel bell chimes, and just to taunt me, the digital read out now beams “LOW FUEL”. Honestly, I’ve had my car for almost five years, and I’ve never seen that message. So I start to worry. And sweat a little. And pray a lot. My cell phone rings, and it’s Erica (because she has my number). They’ve landed! I’m about five miles from the airport exit, but I have to get gas before I get them, so I tell her to hold tight…I’m comin’! And then, miraculously, I see an exit with a BP station, so I careen (safely) on to the exit ramp and skid (safely) to a stop next to a gas pump. I rejoice and offer prayers of thanksgiving. My mom calls because…oh, heck, I don’t know why she called. I told her exactly what I’d told Erica and what Erica had dutifully repeated to her. I told her that I was getting back in the car, and I’d be seeing her face in about 10 minutes.

Eight minutes later I was being jumped on by Erica, and we were squealing and hugging, doing the Disney Dance of Joy. I gave my mom a hug and smooch and made sure my aunt knew she had landed early (she did), and I wasn’t leaving Mom stranded at the airport (I wasn’t); then Erica and I beat feet outta there and headed to WDW where our divaliciousness would be unleashed! (I called Mom about 15 minutes after we left her. Aunt Nancy had already been there, and they were headed beachside…whew!)

We made it on to WDW property, and Erica snapped the traditional photo with her phone.

http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa465/DixieDiva5799/Laura%20Lee%20Photography/Divas%20at%20Disney%202011/imagejpeg_2.jpg

I know lots of things about WDW. What I don’t know about WDW is how to navigate to the moderate resorts without much backtracking and gnashing of teeth. I can find my way to the theme parks, deluxe resorts, and POP practically blindfolded. But in the moderates, I have met my Waterloo. First we went to Animal Kingdom. A fun place, for sure, but not our intended destination. Next we went to DTD, where we briefly considered stopping to see if we could have lunch at Wolfgang Puck because it’s kind of “our” place. And THEN we went to CBR. (Remember this, because we’re starting a trend.) We were so happy just to be where we were supposed to be that we didn’t take a photo of the sign. Doh! We did, however, remember to get a shot of the Custom House where we checked in.

http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa465/DixieDiva5799/Laura%20Lee%20Photography/Divas%20at%20Disney%202011/001.jpg

The CM at the door said, “Welcome to the islands!” and set the tone for the resort right away. I love how Disney doesn’t miss a trick. You’re immersed in the experience with all your senses! Not only did it look like the islands, with bright tropical colors, island music was playing, and it even smelled like the islands…pineapple, coconut, sun, sand, and surf! Even the Christmas decorations had the island theme.

http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa465/DixieDiva5799/Laura%20Lee%20Photography/Divas%20at%20Disney%202011/003.jpg

We were assigned to Room 4101 in Jamaica, which was pretty far away from everything; and if I’d been traveling with small children who were going to schlep to the pool every day, or if we’d planned to take to take busses everywhere, I’d definitely have asked to be moved. But for us, it was perfect. A quiet, peaceful ground floor corner room with a little oasis of greenery where Erica liked to perch on the railing and talk to her BF. There was a quiet pool nearby, which was nice, too.

Sorry, but these are the only room photos I have. We were starving and ready to go in search of sustenance! We dumped our luggage, used the facilities, checked hair and makeup (some touch-up needed), and headed out to get our grub on. Destination: Beaches and Cream!

Wowza! Just in case you were wondering, B&C is some kind of popular to say the least. It was around 1:30 when we got there, so I knew it would be busy, but I didn’t expect wall-to-wall people and such a long line! We quickly took stock of the situation and decided to go somewhere else. Yes, we were disappointed, but hunger wins every time! In order to take it easy on my knee (see the aforementioned PTR for info), we went back to the car and drove over to YC to check out Captain’s Grille. And since everyone else was at B&C, we walked right in, sat right down, and were sipping our drinks and reading menus in no time flat. Our waitress was Mouna, and she was just the sweetest thing…so helpful and nice and the perfect amount of checking up on us without being bothersome.

Erica is a vegetarian (no meat, but she eats seafood) and ordered the tomato and mozzarella sandwich. I am a carnivore and ordered the Black Angus hamburger topped with lobster meat.

While we waited for our food, we discussed the “man cave” atmosphere and decided that Troy (Erica’s dad) and Gabriel would be right at home. We also took embarrassing pictures of each other and then pinky swore that none of them would show up on facebook or the Dis. This one is Erica-approved.

http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa465/DixieDiva5799/Laura%20Lee%20Photography/Divas%20at%20Disney%202011/011.jpg

We also got some random shots of the restaurant.

http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa465/DixieDiva5799/Laura%20Lee%20Photography/Divas%20at%20Disney%202011/013.jpg

Ooooh….

http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa465/DixieDiva5799/Laura%20Lee%20Photography/Divas%20at%20Disney%202011/010.jpg

Aaaah….

And then the food came!

First the crab cake appetizer, which we shared, but by the time we remembered to take a picture of it, this was what was left:

http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa465/DixieDiva5799/Laura%20Lee%20Photography/Divas%20at%20Disney%202011/015.jpg

And then the main course!

http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa465/DixieDiva5799/Laura%20Lee%20Photography/Divas%20at%20Disney%202011/016.jpg

Isn’t it pretty?

http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa465/DixieDiva5799/Laura%20Lee%20Photography/Divas%20at%20Disney%202011/014.jpg

The food was good…very good. Erica especially loved the bread. I didn’t eat my bun, but I tasted it; and I liked it. The fries, however, were SO good. I’m not even that big a fan of fries, but I wanted more of them! Erica enjoyed her sandwich and said the mozzarella was some of the best she’s ever had. She didn’t like the side item you see in the picture (I can’t remember what it’s called), so she got fries, too. She agreed that they were good but wasn’t quite as taken with them as I was.

Mouna noticed Erica’s birthday button and brought her a chocolate mousse truffle dome extravaganza of awesomeness as a surprise dessert. And lemme tell you, it was like Heaven on a spoon, baby. Rich, creamy, melt in your mouth chocolate Heaven. It wasn’t on the lunch menu, so maybe it’s a dinner dessert; and maybe some of you have had it. If you haven’t had it, what are you waiting for, go get it! And, no, there are no photos of it because we inhaled it!

On the Divalicious Scale of Delicious Disney Dining, we gave it two thumbs up and would eat there again.

After lunch, we admired the YC Christmas decorations. My camera doesn’t do so well with photos of lights, and I usually get a bunch of blurred masterpieces. You should see some of the abstract photo art I’ve created trying to take pictures of fireworks!

On second thought, never mind.

http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa465/DixieDiva5799/Laura%20Lee%20Photography/Divas%20at%20Disney%202011/017.jpg

You can’t say you weren’t warned! Giant nautical-themed tree…blurry but still pretty.

I liked the miniature town.

At this point, with our tummies full and our camera batteries dying, we decided to go back to CBR. Erica had gotten a grand total of about 40 minutes of sleep the night before because she was nervous about her first-ever flight and was ready for a nap, and I was ready to elevate my knee and make an ice pack my close personal friend.

I'm here!!!!!!!!

How fun that the flight came in early! But I hate rushing around in the morning too, I would have definitely ended up with my toothbrush in my hair or something in that sort of craziness! Your trip sounds like it got off to a great start!

I must say, Erica's sandwich is absolutely gorgeous...dare I say...divalicious? Come on. Only a diva could have such an intricately assembled sandwich! And it looks fantastic too!

Disney does their chocolate mousse wonderfully, I've loved every incarnation of it I've ever had. :thumbsup2

Can't wait to read more!

Welcome! I'm glad you made it over!

That sandwich was definitely divalicious...almost too pretty to eat (although she did manage to scarf it down somehow)!

Ah, chocolate mousse...I want some right now!

We made our way slowly back to the car, passing a small outside wedding reception along the way. The tablecloths were bright white under the blue sky and adorned with brilliant purple centerpieces…so pretty! Erica commented that YC was a beautiful place to get married, and I reminded her that she had once said she wanted to get married at the Grand Floridian. Which, apparently, she had completely forgotten. Or maybe she’s just fickle when it comes to Disney deluxe resorts!

We made it back to CBR with NO backtracking (miracles DO happen), and I commented on how empty the parking lots were as we made our way to Jamaica. I don’t think we ever saw more than two or three people at CBR stops waiting for a bus, and we were always able to park in the space closest to our room. I was patting myself on the back for knowing that early December is a great time to visit WDW!

After a stop at a nearly-deserted Port Royale for ice and post-nap snacks and beverages, we hit the room for some Stacey, a shower (Erica), and a pain pill/ice pack combo (me). We both fell asleep, and I have to say that the CBR beds were wonderful. It’s been a while, but I don’t remember the moderate beds being so comfy!

I woke before Erica and snapped a photo of Sleeping Beauty with my phone. She wasn’t exactly thrilled about it but gave me the OK to put it in the TR.

http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa465/DixieDiva5799/Laura%20Lee%20Photography/Divas%20at%20Disney%202011/SleepingBeauty1.jpg

I reviewed our photos, jotted down some TR notes, chatted with Gabriel for a bit, read a few chapters in the book I’d brought along, and showered before waking Erica (boy, was she tired!); but soon enough we were getting ready for our dinner at Grand Floridian Café. It was Erica’s idea to wear tiaras to this meal, and I was completely willing to go along with it; but she forgot hers, so we nixed the plan. Sigh. There just aren’t enough opportunities in life for a diva to wear her tiara!

As we approached GF, I was stunned by all the people milling around out front and the number of cars overflowing the lot. It was chaos! Certainly different than CBR. Could this be a foreshadowing of things to come? We circled the lot a few times in search of the ever-elusive close-up space with no success, so I decided to give my knee a break and let Erica drop me off at the door and park the car. As I was getting out with my cane, one of the valets came over and said that since the handicapped lot was full, we were eligible for complimentary valet parking. Yes! We practically high-fived as we left White Lightnin’ (my car, so-named by my nephew) in the valet’s care and made our way to GFC. On the way, we saw this:

http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa465/DixieDiva5799/Laura%20Lee%20Photography/Divas%20at%20Disney%202011/040.jpg

http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa465/DixieDiva5799/Laura%20Lee%20Photography/Divas%20at%20Disney%202011/037.jpg

http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa465/DixieDiva5799/Laura%20Lee%20Photography/Divas%20at%20Disney%202011/036.jpg

We checked in and were given a buzzer. The lobby was a madhouse, complete with shouting, crying, and shoving (I wish I was joking); so we stepped outside to escape the noise and waited about 15 minutes for our table to be ready.

Our waitress, whose name I don’t remember, was a hoverer and checked on us about every five minutes, which, I suppose, is better than being ignored or forgotten. The restaurant was packed and incredibly loud. It was a bit difficult to have a decent conversation, but we managed. Erica started with the French onion soup, and I had the pumpkin bisque. Both were yummy! For her main, Erica had the Mahi Mahi, which she LOVED.

http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa465/DixieDiva5799/Laura%20Lee%20Photography/Divas%20at%20Disney%202011/026.jpg

I had the grilled pork chop, which the menu said came with roasted corn, sugar snap peas, and stone-ground mustard demi-glace but was served like this:

http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa465/DixieDiva5799/Laura%20Lee%20Photography/Divas%20at%20Disney%202011/025.jpg

I asked and was told that they were out of the sides normally served with it, so I got creamed spinach (ugh, ick, yuck) and scalloped potatoes. The pork chop was juicy but tasted a bit vinegary, which I didn’t enjoy. The spinach was—what’s the word—disgusting. But the potatoes more than made up for it. They were beyond delicious!

For dessert, we ordered the sampler of four, and it came to the table with a light-up Tinker Bell clip-on birthday surprise for Erica. There was a little girl at the table next to us who was celebrating her birthday, too, and she immediately started telling her dad that she wanted THAT dessert!

http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa465/DixieDiva5799/Laura%20Lee%20Photography/Divas%20at%20Disney%202011/028.jpg

From left-to-right: Key Lime pie with a chocolate crust (not our favorite; it wasn’t limey enough, and I didn’t care for the lime/chocolate taste sensation), Boston crème cake with dark chocolate ganache (the cake and filling were good, but the mild flavor profile was overpowered by the ganache), fruit tart topped with blueberries and raspberries (very yummy; we agreed that we wanted more of it), and lemon cheesecake dome (the best by far, perfect combination of tart and sweet; we would both order it again…and again!).

We also got a dark chocolate Mickey, and he was just adorable!

http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa465/DixieDiva5799/Laura%20Lee%20Photography/Divas%20at%20Disney%202011/032.jpg

We briefly considered taking Mickey back to the room with us, but our evening wasn’t ending at GF, so Erica gave him a smooch…

http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa465/DixieDiva5799/Laura%20Lee%20Photography/Divas%20at%20Disney%202011/033.gif

…and dunked him in her coffee!

Erica gave GFC a thumbs up (way up!) and named this her second favorite meal of the trip. She would most definitely eat there again. In spite of my great love for the scalloped potatoes and lemon cheesecake, I’m giving it a thumbs down and won’t be rushing back anytime soon.

Ordinarily, I love to hang out at GF, linger in the lobby and pretend that I live there; but it was so crowded and loud that we decided to move on to the Poly, where Holiday Wishes from the beach awaited us.

Erica fell in love with the Poly and immediately began making plans to come back and stay there forthwith, posthaste, and as soon as possible! She didn’t remember, but we used the volcano pool on one of our trips when the Contemporary was being used as Shades of Green during renovations. The CR pool was closed, and we were allowed to use all the deluxe resort pools. Let’s hear it for Disney-approved pool hopping! I’m surprised she didn’t remember competing for the gold medal in the Water Slide Olympics!

She got a few snaps around the lobby…I got nuffin’. I usually have photos of EVERYTHING, but this trip my mad photography skillz were wonky. Let’s blame it on the camera, shall we? I have high hopes that Santa will bring me a new Canon Rebel T3i for Christmas and then I’ll have no more excuses. I’ll post some of Erica’s pictures once I have them.

We made it outside just as the water pageant was sailing into view. I urged Erica to run ahead and get some pictures, but she did the turtle walk with me (because she’s sweet like that); and we enjoyed the lights and music as we made our way to the beach. We pulled up chairs just in time for the patriotic finale. The night was breezy and cool, but not cold enough to require jackets; and the sky was dotted with a smattering of stars that glittered like diamonds.

Sometimes, when you least expect it, life gives you a moment you’ll remember forever. Sitting there on the Poly beach, watching the castle change colors, waiting for Holiday Wishes to start, I had one of those moments. Erica reached out and grabbed my hand, squeezed it, and said, “Thank you, Aunt Lauri. I love you!” And, of course I got a little misty eyed because this weekend that was my gift to her was also her gift to me. The gift of her time; new memories to add to my treasure trove; and, most importantly, the ever-renewing gift of her love.

We held hands as fireworks burst in bright red, blue, green, and gold explosions around us and drifted to the water like stars floating from the sky. We gasped and laughed; and, of course, I cried because I always cry during Wishes.

I won’t humiliate myself by posting my photographic attempts at capturing the best fireworks show ever in the history of mankind. WISHES ROCKS!

We waited until the small crowd dispersed and then made our way through the lush Poly gardens and back through the lobby to the car. We went back to CBR by way of Wilderness Lodge (I blame it on the darkness because it certainly couldn’t be MY fault) and made a stop for ice before remembering that we had to pick up Erica’s park tickets at concierge. They were supposed to be linked to her KTTK at check in but weren’t, and the line at concierge was so long at that time that we left after waiting about 15 minutes.

So, back around to Custom House we went. Upon entering, I saw the CM at concierge with his cash drawer in hand, obviously closing up for the night. He noticed me, too, and asked if he could help, even though they were officially closed and had been for almost a half hour. He explained that the system had been shut down for the night, but he’d try to retrieve the tickets and asked for the confirmation number. It was in my handy dandy, super nifty pocket-sized notebook, where I had meticulously written down ALL our confirmation numbers and other important information…

…and was in the room because it didn’t fit in the small bag I’d switched to.

Good thing I have a beautiful mind! I was able to give him enough of the number that he found the ticket order, deactivated her current KTTK, and printed a new one with the tickets attached. Hooray for Arvulo, my new best friend, CM extraordinaire, magic-maker supreme, unmatched pixie dust scatterer!

In spite of what Gabriel says, it really doesn’t take much to make me happy!

All in all, it was a lovely first day. We visited three deluxe resorts, enjoyed some pretty spectacular desserts, and experienced Holiday Wishes. It wasn’t exactly as I’d planned, but I wouldn’t change a moment of it!

I think any of the deluxe resorts - or really anywhere on property - would be an awesome place to get married! Last year, DBF and I stayed at the Yacht Club, and our room looked directly over the Wedding Pavilion gazebo there. It was a really nice little area - and one day we actually even got to see a wedding there! (Well, I peeked before the ceremony, and then we left them alone - we would have been totally obvious lurkers on our balcony! :rotfl:)

That stinks that the Grand Floridian was totally chaotic! But your dessert sampler does look awesome!

How fun that you got to catch some of the EWP from the beach! I'm really hoping to see it next month!

I totally agree about the deluxe resorts for weddings...magical! How cool that you got a peek at one at YC! I'm so excited to stay at there in October!

OMG, that dessert sampler completely saved that part of our night for me!

I hope you get to see the EWP!

The next morning we were up with the sun, bright-eyed and eager to greet the day, singing “A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes” while some friendly woodland creatures helped us get dressed.

Oh, wait, that’s Cinderella.

After staying up late talking, we were up well after the sun, groggy but happy to be together at Disney, managed to get ready on our own without incident, and hit the road for breakfast at Kona Café.

I remember when Kona wasn’t the popular breakfast place it is now, when you could walk in without an ADR and get a table, and when there weren’t approximately three gazillion and one people there before you.

Ah, the good old days.

We muscled our way through the throng (‘Scuse us, pardon me, comin’ through!), checked in, and were told, “Sorry. We’re running late. Here’s your buzzer. Go away and wait someplace else.” OK, I added that last part, but the Kona CMs were less than friendly. I may have muttered something like, “Welcome to Kona, have a magical freakin’ day,” under my breath, which, if I said it, made Erica laugh.

We found an abandoned lei and had some fun with flowers.

Erica updated her facebook status to “Just got lei’d at Disney!”

And I took a photo of the waterfall from above.

We waited over a half hour (!) but finally got a table. During the planning and waiting for this trip to happen, we talked about Tonga Toast a lot. A lot, a lot. More than normal people should talk about French toast. Then again, we never professed to be normal! Anyhoo, Erica said many times that she couldn’t WAIT to try it. I agreed that there was NO WAY I could go to Kona and not get the famed Tonga Toast. So naturally, I ordered…

…macadamia nut pancakes!

http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa465/DixieDiva5799/Laura%20Lee%20Photography/Divas%20at%20Disney%202011/063.jpg

And Erica ordered….

…a veggie omelet!

http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa465/DixieDiva5799/Laura%20Lee%20Photography/Divas%20at%20Disney%202011/064.jpg

We also shared a pot of Kona coffee, which, IMHO, is the only decent coffee available at WDW. My motto when going to WDW: Have Starbucks, will travel!

Wouldn’t it be AWESOME if Disney and Starbucks joined up (sorta like Disney and Coke)? Seems like a no-brainer to me! Gabriel says Disney and Starbucks are like the two prettiest girls in school, each waiting to be invited to the prom. Which makes no sense AT ALL to me, and yet I think I get what he means anyway. My advice to both of them: Get over yourselves…make a deal…make people happy…make TONS more money!

But I digress.

Again.

Erica and I were both pleased with our food and gave Kona two thumbs up on our Divalicious Scale of Delicious Disney Dining. We would come back, but only if we’re not in a rush to be somewhere at a certain time.

Even though she wasn’t wearing her birthday button, the waitress brought her a cupcake (I had put the celebration on the reservation).

http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa465/DixieDiva5799/Laura%20Lee%20Photography/Divas%20at%20Disney%202011/066.jpg

(She’s taking a picture of the Stitch that was dusted in chocolate on her plate. Erica LOVES her some Stitch!)

http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa465/DixieDiva5799/Laura%20Lee%20Photography/Divas%20at%20Disney%202011/067.jpg

According to Erica, the cupcake was less than stellar; but she didn’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings, so she took it with her and tossed it out of sight of Kona. I just love that girl!

With breakfast behind us, we headed for our first ride on the monorail. I love the monorail with a love that shall burn brightly throughout time and shall never dim. Por favor mantengase alejado de las puertas, y’all! I suggested that we ride it around a couple of times just for fun, but “somebody” gave me the stink eye. Fine, birthday girl’s rules…onward to Epcot!

As we rode the rail, I asked Erica if she knew what EPCOT originally stood for, before it became Epcot Center (boo hiss). She didn’t, so I told her, and then added that CMs who work there say it stands for Every Paycheck Comes On Thursday and at the end of the day it means Every Person Comes Out Tired. There was a young lady in our car who had apparently bathed in her favorite fragrance, making me glad for fresh air. As we made our way to bag check, I told Erica that EPCOT could also stand for Excessive Perfume Causes Olfactory Trauma!

Which started a great new game!

We had SO MUCH FUN making up new names for the park based on things we saw! Here are some of our favorites:

At the Living Seas: Eighty People Can Ogle Turtles

In Canada: Enraged Pirate Curses Oddball Tourist

In France: Enchanting Princess Charms Old Timer

In Mexico: Evidently Pre-teens Can’t Obtain Tequila

In Electric Umbrella: Exhausted Parents Chase Over-amped Toddler

Future World: Egghead Pedestrian Causes Outrageous Tumble

Everywhere: Every Pretty Christmas Ornament Twinkles

Now back to your regularly scheduled trip report!

We stopped, and I got a set of wheels for the day. No use walking and being in pain with every step when I can ride and have the pain somewhat diminished! It took me a few minutes to get the speed controlled so that Erica didn’t have to power walk to keep up with me, but we were soon in sync and on our way to The Land for Soarin’ fastpasses.

…until we were sidetracked by the Finding Nemo ride.

Erica loves Finding Nemo the movie and made a beeline for it. I told her that Nemo’s ride isn’t Disney’s finest effort and suggested that we get our FPs for Soarin first, only to fold when she said, “Oh, come on, let’s ride it NOW.” I’m weak. I admit it.

I laughed when the ride ended, and Erica said, “Well, that was kinda lame.”
To which I responded, “Really? I thought it ROCKED!”

We headed into the aquarium, where we lingered for a long time. The Living Seas is one of my favorite things at Epcot, and Erica has mad love for all things aquatic; so we were in no hurry at all to leave.

When she was three years old, we went to Sea World and she asked what job would let her be with whales and dolphins all the time. The only thing I could think of was marine biologist, and she spent the next four years telling anyone who would listen that she was going to be a marine biologist. Then one day, she announced that she’d changed her mind and wanted to be a zoologist instead. I asked her why, and she answered, “Well, if I’m a marine biologist, I have to be in the water all the time; and I’ll get all pruny.”

True dat.

I'm doing the Tonga Toast countdown too right now...who knows if I'll actually order it though!! It's just so sweet...that's my only deterrent. I wonder if I can order it without that final dredging of sugar. Is that weird? I would totally do that if I could.

I love your new names for Epcot! Agreed, Nemo definitely is a bit lame. Although a friend and I once rode after some squishees from France...that ride was HILARIOUS then! :rotfl:

Tonga Toast is sweet, but I usually LIKE that about it! :lmao: I bet you could get it without the final dredging, and it certainly never hurts to ask!

:rotfl2: When Erica turns 21, we'll go back and ride Nemo again and see if it's improved after some squishees. Of course, most things in life can be improved with the addition of a squishee!

I just want to take a moment here to thank everyone who's taking the time to read along. (I know you're out there...the counter is going up!) It's so much fun reliving the my time with Erica at WDW and having y'all along for the ride! Please don't hesitate to leave a comment...I'd actually LOVE it if you did.

Wishing all of you a magical holiday season!

Now, where were we?

Ah, yes, the Seas with Nemo and Friends…but it will forever be The Living Seas to me!

This is the spot in the TR where I was going to wow the readers with Erica’s fish photos. Of which there were many. Unfortunately, she took them with her phone; and it was stolen before she uploaded them.

Gloom, despair, and misery on me!

I asked her for them numerous times, but…well, she’s 18; and I guess that’s the only excuse she has…or needs!

Therefore, I have only one photo to document the two-plus hours we spent there.

http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa465/DixieDiva5799/Laura%20Lee%20Photography/Divas%20at%20Disney%202011/069.jpg
“Gimme some fin, my friend.”

After advising all the fish to “just keep swimmin’”, we left the sea, and I got a picture of the back of Spaceship Earth. Since I already have approximately 10,000 pictures of the most famous slightly irregular geodesic sphere on the planet, I’m always looking for new angles to photograph. As it turns out, this isn’t a new or even a particularly good angle…go figure.

http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa465/DixieDiva5799/Laura%20Lee%20Photography/Divas%20at%20Disney%202011/072.jpg

And I got another shot of my favorite fountain in all of Disney!

http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa465/DixieDiva5799/Laura%20Lee%20Photography/Divas%20at%20Disney%202011/074.jpg

One can never have enough pictures of a glass pyramid either!

http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa465/DixieDiva5799/Laura%20Lee%20Photography/Divas%20at%20Disney%202011/076.jpg

The tantalizing scent of magical Disney popcorn beckoned us, and we had no choice but to take advantage of its restorative powers while giving Erica’s feet a break. She wore very cute and very unpractical shoes both days and insisted that she was fine every time I asked. I was skeptical to say the least! I usually wear my bright pink Mickey Crocs at Disney because they’re amazingly comfortable…and also because I don’t mind people staring at my feet. But since I was ECV’ing it for most of this trip, I wore my favorite pink flip flops instead. I packed the Crocs and tried to convince Erica to wear them…or to let me get her a pair in a not-so-vibrant color or more fashionable style…but there was no way she was gonna let that happen.

By the time we finished our popcorn, we were ready to venture into World Showcase, completely forgetting…

…wait for it…

…Our Soarin’ fastpasses.

Word to the wise, even half a pain pill can impede your Epcot touring plan.

I don’t have any pictures of the United Kingdom and no TR notes either, so either we didn’t stop there or we did, and it was so dull that I completely blocked it out. (After I wrote this, I asked Erica, and she said, “Is that where we saw the maze thing?”) So I guess we were there after all!

In Canada, we bypassed the movie but got some pictures.

http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa465/DixieDiva5799/Laura%20Lee%20Photography/Divas%20at%20Disney%202011/080.jpg

We stopped and enjoyed Off Kilter because they’re awesome and totally rock!

It had nothing whatsoever to do with their toned, muscular legs and the fact that men in kilts are insanely attractive.

To me.

And apparently to Erica, too.

If anybody asks, that’s our story; and we’d appreciate you corroborating it.

Next up, France! We saw Beauty and the Beast, and I wanted to stop and take Erica’s picture with them; but she demurred. I know I could have talked her into it, but I really didn’t want her to do anything she didn’t want to do; so I let it go. But I warned her that if we saw Genie or Sully, I would be stopping; and she’d be responsible for getting the picture! She only stopped for one character during the trip, and she was as excited as a toddler. (Can you guess who it is?) Stay tuned for the photo in a future installment!

By the time we reached Morocco, we were hungry and decided to check out Tangierine Café, continuing our quest to visit as many WDW cafés as possible (current count: Grand Floridian Café, Kona Café, and now Tangierine Café). Since our dinner reservation wasn’t until 9:30, we decided to hold off on lunch a bit longer and selected a traditional Moroccan almond pastry and a Pistachio baklava from the coffee bar to share.

They were so good that angels sang.

They were so good that we got two more!

Erica’s BF called just as we were finishing up each and every crumb, so I left them to chat while I went to the ladies room. On the way, I saw three men on the grass under the Moroccan flag doing their afternoon prayers. It was one of those quiet Disney moments that I love so much. I didn’t want to invade their privacy (in the middle of Epcot, but still), so I didn’t stop to watch, but I found it very beautiful that they had found a place to practice their faith at Disney.

Erica loves the Moroccan design aesthetic, so we went back into the shops to see what we could see. I absolutely love this little bazaar area, and we had a blast admiring things and decorating her future apartment with carpets, lamps, vases, etc. from Morocco, via WDW. And of course, we both fell in love with the caftans, beaded scarves, belts, and head dresses, too! We found a stash of brightly colored enamel bracelets, some bejeweled, others with dangling beads that tinkled and sang with every movement. It was so much fun trying them all on, and the salesgirl kept going into the back and bringing more out, just to make deciding which one to buy even harder! Erica finally settled on a black and silver beaded beauty, which you can see in some of the photos below.

We did a little impromptu photo session with this beautiful fountain as the backdrop. It was practically deserted!

We also spent a few minutes in the small museum, Moroccan Style: The Art of Personal Adornment. There are some seriously beautiful things in there, and I highly recommend a visit. Being an equestrian herself, Erica grabbed my camera and got this shot:

Great report so far! I get what you mean about Disney departure day being like Christmas and your birthday all rolled into one. We are leaving in three weeks for our trip and I asked my DH if he was excited for Christmas the other day and he said he was but he was more excited for Disney! My DH loves Christmas so this was a pretty big confession! And when I asked why he said because Christmas is only one day and Disney is much longer :goodvibes I can't wait to see the rest of your trip and which character that she stopped for!

Ah, Florida in December.

The balmy temperatures.

The swaying breezes.

The rain.

As a native, I’m used to Florida’s rain; and I feel badly for people who come here thinking it’s going to be all sun all the time, even in December. I’m not one of those Floridians who don a hat, coat, scarf, and mittens when it dips below 65 degrees; but with the sun hiding behind the clouds, an overcast, gloomy sky threatening to dump gallons of liquid sunshine on us at any moment, and the wafting breeze, Epcot had gotten a wee bit chilly.

Of course, those of heartier stock (Hello, Canadians!) were running around in shorts, sandals and tank tops relishing the heat wave.

The Divas weren’t about to let a few sprinkles slow us down, so we pushed onward to Japan, where Erica almost got some sushi. I don’t eat sushi, but I told her what I’d learned on the Dis, that it was “grocery store quality” at the CS place in Japan. Since award-winning, internationally-recognized sushi chef Yoshi would be at our beck and call at dinner, she decided to pass. We took a few snaps around the Japanese pavilion, which, I think is one of the prettiest places in Epcot.

The pitter patter of sprinkles increased to a steady, but light, rain so we hurried past the American Adventure without so much as a wave and slammed into the most terrifying, horrifying sight in all of WDW.

The dreaded TOUR GROUP!

At the entrance to Italy, we were completely surrounded by a sea of bright orange shirts worn by people who were obviously trying to organize themselves and failing miserably. I grabbed Erica’s hand and shouted, “Whatever you do, don’t let go!”

It was a very dramatic moment, I assure you!

Once we made it through the throng, Erica announced that she was famished and would most likely die from lack of nutrition at any moment.

What a drama queen…I have NO idea who she gets that from!

The rain had picked up even more, so we made a mad dash for Via Napoli to see if we could get a table.

I’ll wait while you stop laughing.

That’s right; get it all out of your system.

I knew it was highly unlikely, but it was worth a try.

FAIL!

We ducked inside the Kidcot station to wait out the rain, and Erica sat down and colored with the kids. She works at a daycare center, so this was right up her alley! The kids loved her (well, duh, how could they not?), and the CM even said she’d be a great addition to the team.

The rain let up enough for us to continue our mad, wet dash around the world, and we headed for China and the Lotus Blossom Café, bringing our café count to four. I’ve only eaten there once, and it was not good…in fact, I got sick afterwards, so I don’t do Lotus Blossom Café.

At all.

Ever.

But Erica is a brave soul and got something (sorry, I can’t remember what…something noodly, I think) to tide her over until we found something else, and we stayed out of the rain whilst she scarfed it down.

We ducked into the museum to see the terra cotta army replica and have these masterpieces of photographic genius to show for it.

http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa465/DixieDiva5799/Laura%20Lee%20Photography/Divas%20at%20Disney%202011/113.jpg

http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa465/DixieDiva5799/Laura%20Lee%20Photography/Divas%20at%20Disney%202011/114.jpg

At this point, Erica was pretty much over World Showcase, and I couldn’t blame her. We were tired, hungry, damp, and chilly; and, to make matters worse, WS had become incredibly crowded to boot.

We agreed that it was time to go back to the future!

Hallo, Norway! Farvel, Norway!

Buenos Dias, Mexico! Hasta la Vista!

In our quest for sustenance, we paused to immortalize the Epcot Christmas tree in pictures.

http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa465/DixieDiva5799/Laura%20Lee%20Photography/Divas%20at%20Disney%202011/117.jpg

We headed for The Land and the Nirvana that is Sunshine Seasons. I figured we could get out of the rain, eat, do Living With The Land and maybe, if we were very lucky, Soarin’.

Unfortunately, approximately 9,395,929,606 other people had the same idea.

It was packed! I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many people at Sunshine Seasons, and the wait time for Living With The Land was 45 minutes. The Soarin’ wait time was twice that, and by the looks of the line, probably even longer.

One look at Erica told me that this was not gonna happen. She wanted food, and she wanted it now! I know Electric Umbrella has a veggie Panini, so we quickly reversed and headed that way.

Not surprisingly, since everyone else was over at The Land, we were through the line and sitting down to eat in about 15 minutes.

Erica enjoyed her sandwich very much (photo approval obtained).

http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa465/DixieDiva5799/Laura%20Lee%20Photography/Divas%20at%20Disney%202011/123.jpg
I was laughing SO hard when I took this picture; that’s why it’s so blurry.

I got the meatball sub (three large meatballs smothered in mozzarella and sauce), and it was yummmm-my! I didn’t eat the bread, but the meatballs were plenty filling all by themselves. And we had some more enchanted French fries! Has Disney changed their fries or something? Because I’ve eaten many, many (many) fries at Disney, and I don’t remember them ever being as good as they were on this trip.

I’ll be honest with you. I’ve never been a huge fan of Electric Umbrella. Always considered it just OK. But this meal was very good and earned two thumbs up from the Divas. I have a new appreciation for Eléctrica Paraguas. (I hope I spelled that right).

It was close to 5 p.m. when we finished eating, and Erica admitted that her feet were hurting (shocking, I know); so I suggested that we head back to the resort. She wanted to try out the hot tub, and I needed ice, elevation, and a whole pain pill for the knee. She agreed wholeheartedly, and we bid a fond adieu to Epcot.

Back at CBR, I napped while Erica hot tubbed; then she napped while I showered. And then we both got dolled up for our dinner at California Grill, birthday presents, and a super-secret divalicious surprise!

Oh, rain at Disney should just not exist!! Usually I just poncho through it, but I remember one December we went (2009 I think) that the rain was unending and torrential and we were just soaked through. But it's very hard to be entirely miserable about that while at Disney, that is the positive part!

You know how you plan trips in your head.. I read trip reports to get me through to my next one.

We can not go until December 2013 (which is forever in my book)
so I try to read everything possible regarding the same week (or thereabout)

Never been during the christmas season. Last time we went was during Halloween and that was only last year.

The upcoming trip will be ONLY my 4th.

I look forward to all your adventures.

I love planning trips in my head, too...thank goodness for the Dis and TRs to help us through the waiting!

Christmas at Disney is beyond magical; I know y'all will have a wonderful time. 2013 is a long time, but it's SO worth the wait!

wow=- did they change this place in the last few years? We went to Beaches and Cream for burgers and ice cream.

Noooo! Beaches and Cream is still there just as it was. B&C was incredibly busy that day, and we were incredibly hungry; so we went to Captain's Grill at YC instead. (That's CG in the photo.)

Oh, rain at Disney should just not exist!! Usually I just poncho through it, but I remember one December we went (2009 I think) that the rain was unending and torrential and we were just soaked through. But it's very hard to be entirely miserable about that while at Disney, that is the positive part!

Can't wait to hear about your dinner at California Grill!!!

December is usually one of the best months of the year here; but, as the saying goes, "Into each life a little rain must fall." And when you think about it, a rainy day at Disney beats a sunny day anywhere else!

When I started planning our Divalicious World Excursion, I knew I wanted to include a signature dining experience, and I knew that it had to include sushi. We usually go to Wolfgang Puck for sushi, because Erica loves the eel there and always asks for extra eel sauce.

I selected California Grill for Erica’s official birthday dinner because it’s incredibly divalicious and has an unbelievable view of the castle, allowing us to have Wishes as our backdrop. But mostly because of Sushi Chef Extraordinaire, Yoshi.

While Erica was getting ready, I slipped out to the car and retrieved her presents from the trunk. She thought the trip was her only gift, but I had one or two surprises up my sleeve!

To say that she was surprised is an understatement of epic proportions. Unfortunately, when she was opening them, I grabbed her camera (it’s very similar to mine); so she has the photos.

I fully expect to get them from her by her next birthday.:lmao:

At any rate, here are the catalog photos of her loot (Mickey bracelet; peace, love & Disney iPhone cover; Jack Sparrow’s Girl hoodie, and the pièce de résistance, her very own Disney Dooney!)

http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa465/DixieDiva5799/Disney%20Graphics/D-BCrossbody-1.jpg

She squealed. She laughed. She jumped up and down. She took pictures with her phone and sent them to her friends. She called her BFF and described everything in minute detail. She called her mom (my sister who had forbid me to buy her anything) and ratted me out. She hugged me so hard I thought a couple of ribs might have cracked.

It was wonderful!

We arrived at the Contemporary a few minutes after nine and valet parked without checking the handicapped lot for a space. Divas valet, dahling, and damn the expense!

We checked in and confirmed my request for a window table with a fireworks view. The CM said, “Those requests aren’t guaranteed, but it’s your lucky night; there’s one left, and it’s yours.”

The young woman in a very tiny, very shiny silver dress who checked in behind us was told that she and her BF would have a fireworks view, but there were no more window tables left. She gave me a sad, pouty face and said that it was their six month dating anniversary. It felt like she expected me to offer her our table, so I explained that we were celebrating Erica’s 18th birthday. And did NOT offer her our table. We rode the elevator up with them, and because of my perpetual turtle walk, they got in front of us as we exited.

And were escorted to our table.

The window table with the castle view.

The last such table available.

I was upset to say the least. I wanted to throw a fit and show them how a Diva gets what a Diva wants.

But being a lady is more important than being a diva, and my mama raised me right; so we graciously accepted our interior table with a fireworks view.

While thinking some not-so-very-gracious thoughts about Miss Tiny-Shiny Silver Dress!

Our waiter, the suave, handsome and oh-so-very charming Roberto, brought our menus and called us princess. With his yummy accent and wavy dark hair, he actually reminded me of Gabriel…even Erica commented on the resemblance. When I told him he reminded me of my BF, he said, “Ah, I should be so lucky to have you for my princess.” Smooth, Roberto, very smooth!

He patiently answered all of Erica’s questions about the sushi, explaining that they don’t serve eel because it’s on the endangered list. He suggested, and she ordered, the spicy Kazan roll instead, which is crab, shrimp, bay scallops, and tuna served with a fireball sauce.

For my appetizer, I ordered the triple cheese (Pecorino, Asiago, and Provolone with sun-dried tomato, arugula pesto) flatbread.

It was almost time for Wishes, so we left our table and went out to the observation deck. And turned right around and went back inside. It was too windy and cold for us!

The lights dimmed, the music started, and then the song that never fails to start the waterworks.

Star light, star bright, first star I see tonight.
I wish I may, I wish I might, have the wish, I wish tonight.

Oh, a world of wishes, a world where dreams come true.
So make a wish, see it through, dare to do what dreamers do.

Wishes...dream a dream.
Wishes…set it free.
Wishes…trust your heart.
Just believe.

We’re all just children, reaching for our dreams.
They’re shining high above us, and even though it seems so far, we put our faith and hope on a shooting star.

It was as amazing as I’d dreamed it would be, being on eye-level with the fireworks…and it didn’t even matter that we weren’t at our intended table because when you get right down to it, the magic isn’t in how close you are to the fireworks. The magic is in watching them with someone you love, and the whiz-bang-pop of brilliant color is just an outward representation of what you’re already feeling on the inside.

As the lights were coming back up, Roberto brought us our appetizers. I pulled out the camera to get photos, and Erica just about had a conniption, whispering, “Aunt Lauri, not here! It’s too nice!”

I assured her that Disers take pictures of their food at Cali Grill every day, and none of them have ever been asked to leave; but she was appalled, and I thought she was so adorable that I didn’t push it. Thanks to the Internet, this is what her sushi looked like:

http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa465/DixieDiva5799/Laura%20Lee%20Photography/Divas%20at%20Disney%202011/SpicyKazanRoll.jpg

And my flatbread:

http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa465/DixieDiva5799/Laura%20Lee%20Photography/Divas%20at%20Disney%202011/TripleCheeseFlatbread.jpg

People, this is what food Heaven tastes like! Erica ate every morsel of her sushi and said it was “Sushi on a whole ‘nother level!” My flatbread was divine and my favorite food of the trip.

For her main, Erica took another of Roberto’s suggestions and ordered the Pacific Monchong fish. Roberto explained that it's a deep sea Hawaiian fish that’s flown in overnight from the market fresh, not frozen. As for me, I was horribly conflicted. The filet wasn’t on the menu, but Roberto assured me that it was available. But the pork tenderloin with goat cheese polenta, roasted mushrooms, Zinfandel glaze, and sage sounded wonderful, too.

Decisions, decisions!

Ultimately, I decided on the filet. Which means, of course, that I’ll have to go back to have the pork tenderloin! Gabriel has already agreed, which is further proof that the way I’m going to bring him over to Team Disney is with the food!

In my opinion, the food at Cali Grill is beyond compare. We both named this our favorite meal by a long shot…nothing else even came close! And it’s not just because of the food, which, of course, is amazing. It’s the atmosphere and the service…it’s being treated like an honored guest; more than that, like the ONLY guest.

After our plates were cleared, Roberto brought us the dessert menus, but that was just a ruse. It was time for the super-special, secret divalicious surprise!

http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa465/DixieDiva5799/Laura%20Lee%20Photography/Divas%20at%20Disney%202011/125.jpg

The famed white chocolate Slipper Dessert, available only at CRT, GF restaurants and Cali Grill. I ordered it three weeks in advance and called every week thereafter to make sure the order was really, truly in.

And this is my girl’s reaction to this little bit of culinary perfection:

http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa465/DixieDiva5799/Laura%20Lee%20Photography/Divas%20at%20Disney%202011/126.jpg

Tears of surprise and happiness!

As you can tell, the “no pictures” rule temporarily went out the window when the dessert came!

We shared the Slipper of Awesomeness and finished every morsel. I’ve already suggested to Gabriel that it would behoove him to order one for me when we go back.

Neither of us wanted the evening to end, and we lingered over our coffee, telling “I remember when” stories. The restaurant was pretty empty by then, and it felt like our very own piece of high-in-the-sky Disney real estate. Roberto kept refilling our cups and never made us feel rushed; but, eventually, I asked him for the check, which he brought back promptly.

And with it, the biggest surprise of not just the night, but the whole trip!

I opened the folder.

Blinked.

Closed it.

Looked at Erica.

Opened it again.

IT WAS EMPTY!

Erica and I looked at each other, mouths agape, in total confusion, slightly hysterical laughter bubbling just beneath the surface.

“What does it mean?” she whispered.
“Nothing,” I whispered back. “He just forgot to put the check in.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes!”

Roberto came back to us and asked, “Are you missing something?” Then he explained that he had learned about the mix up with our table and was so impressed with the way we handled it that he told his manager; and they decided to sprinkle us with magical, enchanted, rainbow-colored Pixie Dust.

We both cried, then the manager came over, and we all laughed while I sang their praises and went on and on about what a great evening we had; and just when we thought it couldn’t get any better, they’d taken it up a notch. I told them that I experience magic every time I visit Disney World…but nothing like this!

We didn’t walk out of Cali Grill; we floated!

Hi I'm here! I read your whole TR on my Iphone at work, and I'm really loving it! :thumbsup2

I especially loved your last update, your Cali Grill experience! That's too bad those people stole your table  but what can you do?

The food there looks amazing! I think I want to go there on my next trip! My DH LOVES sushi, so I think he'd really enjoy this place! I'd love to watch Wishes from there! What time did you make your ADR for?

I wish my DH knew about the slipper dessert so he could "surprise" me with one, but if I ever want one, I'll just surprise myself!

Wow, amazing pixie dust from your waiter!!! I had no idea they did that, and just because you didn't complain about your table! That's amazing!!! Gotta love Disney! :lovestruc

:welcome: Yay!

Cali Grill is amazing, and I highly recommend it. I can't imagine going back to WDW and not having a meal there. We made our ADR for 9:30, with Wishes at 10. If you have an earlier ADR, you can come back for Wishes and use the observation deck; watching them from our table made them just a little bit more special!

LOL...you sound like Stringbean with her sticky note reminders for Wingnut!

I've never experienced that kind of pixie dust before...but it goes to show why I keep going back to Disney!

I tend to say everything is magical at WDW...in fact, it's a running joke, such as "Ooooh, magical Disney popcorn/beds/French fries/shampoo", etc. But this was so far above anything I've ever experienced at Disney that I actually looked up "magical" in my handy dandy thesaurus. Results included thrilling, delightful, wonderful, enchanting, lovely, astonishing, and breathtaking...I'd say that just about scratches the surface in describing it!

The food was SO good, and the slipper dessert...well, yummilicious is how Erica described it!

We left the Contemporary with pixie dust zip-zinging in our veins, abuzz with Disney magic and the joy of being together. It didn’t bother us in the least that it was raining or that we backtracked twice before arriving safe and sound at CBR. My record as the worst Disney Property Navigator of all time remains intact!

We were giggly and goofy; and, if we’d been four years old, we’d have been jumping on the beds!

Eventually, we simmered down enough to formulate a plan for the next day, which included sleeping late, exploring the resort a little bit, and then hitting DHS. Since there’d be EMH, we weren’t concerned about getting there early; and neither of us were all that hopped up about joining the Toy Story Mania sprint for fastpasses.

(Don’t tell anyone, but I still haven’t ridden TSM.)

We crawled into our beds and fell asleep with visions of Wishes dancing in our heads.

I slept until a little after 10 a.m., which is unheard of for me. Erica was still sleeping soundly, so I enticed her to wake up by brewing a pot of the beverage sent down to mortal man by the gods and goddesses on Mount Olympus: Starbucks!

We were both moving a little slow, but eventually, fortified with coffee and yogurt, showered and suitably divalicious, we headed outside to see what we could see. CBR is really lovely, and if we were staying longer (and I didn’t have a bum knee), it would have been lots of fun to spend some time walking around taking pictures. As it was, we didn’t have to venture too far from the room in order to find a quiet pool and the beach.

The pool was deserted, and we sat there for a while, talking about everything and nothing. We talked about Erica starting college and when we’d see each other the next time. And we agreed that the Disney Dooney is the ultimate cool in purses. I could feel the end of our time together coming at me like a storm I was helpless to stop and made a conscious decision to pull a Scarlett O’Hara and “…think about that tomorrow.”

While we were sitting there, enjoying the stillness of the day, Gabriel called; and Erica took the opportunity to call her BF, too. She moved to another table for privacy, and I remarked to Gabriel that, “She’s so grown up…how did that happen?” His oldest daughter is 21, so he totally understood the sweet melancholy of my “Sunrise, Sunset” mentality.

Who knows how long we would have lingered if not for hunger? The bridge to Port Royale was right there; but, considering that every step over means a step back, we decided to get the car and drive back to the food court. The vegetarian offerings were disappointing (I miss you, POR!), so we opted to just have frozen cappuccinos and get something to eat at DHS.

Thank goodness the back entrance to DHS is so close to CBR…not even I could get us lost getting there!

In looking back over my TR notes, it says we arrived at DHS at 3:30, and I know that’s right because the parade crowd was exiting in droves when we got there. But for the life of me, it didn’t feel like we’d spent 5 hours getting ready, taking pictures, talking by the pool, and enjoying frozen cappuccinos at Port Royale. Time really does fly when you’re having fun!

There were no available parking spaces in the handicapped lot, so Erica dropped me off and went to park the car. On the way into the park, we added another Christmas tree to our growing collection.

http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa465/DixieDiva5799/Laura%20Lee%20Photography/Divas%20at%20Disney%202011/149.jpg

We stopped to get an ECV, and I was relieved to see they still had two or three, fully charged and ready to go. The CM gave me the name tag and said, “Put whatever you want on it…it doesn’t have to be your last name, even though that’s what most people use.”

Erica and I looked at each other and smiled secret smiles of perfect understanding.

Erica went to get a map to add to her “free Disney souvenirs” stash; and just as she returned with it, it started to rain. Since we were there, and there was no waiting, we ducked into The Great Movie Ride. I know it gets a lot of yawns and bad press, but I actually kinda like it. Do I ride it every time? Well, no. Do I wish they’d change it up somehow? Most definitely! I told Erica that she was likely to think it was lame, but she’s a movie trivia buff like me; and she didn’t hate it. In fact, she kinda liked it, too! She took photos (no flash!), and they looked pretty good on the camera display; unfortunately, I haven’t seen them full size yet. And I’m not holding my breath waiting for them!

We stepped outside to find it sprinkling, but it quickly turned to rain so I suggested we make a dash for the animation class; and we made it undercover just as it started to pour.

Little did we know that one of the highlights of the trip was waiting just inside!

It was raining at DHS.

The upside of the rain is that a lot of people left.

The downside of the rain is that it was cold and wet.

Who knew?

We made a mad dash for the Art of Animation building, which was kinda crowded, but not as bad as I’d anticipated it would be. Sorcerer Mickey was meetin’ and greetin’, but Erica wasn’t interested.

Mr. Incredible was out with his bestie, Frozone, but I didn’t even bother to suggest that she meet them. If Violet had been there, she might have gone for it. She was a big Violet fan at one time.

And then she saw him.

And transformed into a three-year-old right before my eyes.

“It’s Pooh! It’s Pooh! I want a picture with Pooh!”

Well alrighty then, let’s do this!

http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa465/DixieDiva5799/Laura%20Lee%20Photography/Divas%20at%20Disney%202011/161.jpg
I love this picture…you can almost feel her excitement!

http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa465/DixieDiva5799/Laura%20Lee%20Photography/Divas%20at%20Disney%202011/162.jpg

She was so happy to meet the willy nilly silly old bear that she had me take a picture with her phone so she could send it to her friends. Her texts lit up because they were as excited as she was. It just goes to show that you’re never too old for Winnie the Pooh!

One of the things we were most looking forward to was the art class. Erica loves art and has a talent for it…I love art, too, but my talent is minimal at best. While we were waiting, I was telling her the characters I’d heard about, which were Pooh, Stitch, Tigger, Jiminy Cricket, and Stitch. I thought they did Grumpy, too, but I wasn’t sure. We were hoping for Stitch because he’s Erica’s ultimate favorite character of all time (she does an excellent imitation of him). OMG, if she’d seen Stitch, I’d have probably had to pick her up off the floor!

Mushu, not surprisingly, was funny and adorable in a smart-mouthed dragon kind of way, and then it was time for the main event. After polling the class to see what characters had been drawn before, the instructor settled on…
…Tigger!

Mine isn’t terrible. I mean, you can definitely tell that it’s Tigger.

http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa465/DixieDiva5799/Laura%20Lee%20Photography/Divas%20at%20Disney%202011/TiggerLaura.jpg

But Erica’s is really good and prompted the little girl next to her to announce loudly, “Hey, you’re a really good drawer!”

http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa465/DixieDiva5799/Laura%20Lee%20Photography/Divas%20at%20Disney%202011/TiggerErica.jpg

After class, we looked at the Snow White art on display, along with Walt’s Oscars and then went into the gift shop.

Did you ever play “If I had a million dollars?”

Well, if I had a million dollars, I could spend every penny of it in that store!

http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa465/DixieDiva5799/Laura%20Lee%20Photography/Divas%20at%20Disney%202011/166.jpg

I love these colorful, oh-so-groovy figurines…I want them all!

My favorite princess and her beast. I totally understand their relationship…I have a thing for beasts, too! For Christmas, I made Gabriel this sign (framed and matted, of course):

http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa465/DixieDiva5799/Laura%20Lee%20Photography/Divas%20at%20Disney%202011/3MickeyHeads2.jpg

I’d love it if he hung it at work (doubtful!), but I’m very happy that he immediately put it on the wall (in a very prominent place) in his home office!

The original Disney Divas…Erica and I totally coveted these!

Jedi Mickey…Gabriel said, “That’s pretty cool.” Which in Gabriel-speak is high praise. My nephew, Jackson, wants this SO badly…his birthday is in February; I’m thinkin’ the odds are good that he’ll have it for his very own!

Ariel has the best song (Part of Your World) in her movie!

After perusing the art for a while, we noticed that the rain had slowed a bit, so we dashed between the raindrops and headed for the most thrilling ride in all of Disney…TOWER OF TERROR! We were pretty wet when we got there, but it didn’t matter at all cuz we were ready to get our terror on!

And to make the theming even more ominous, there was no one in line.

Zip.

Zilch.

Zero.

The creepy CM told said he’d been waiting just for us.

We were scared!

The rain, dark skies and deserted queue line just added to the eerie feeling of impending doom.

We loved it!

We loved it so much that we rode again!

And then again again!

With no waiting!

Awe. Some.

The third time around, the CM said, “I see we have a couple of gluttons for punishment in our midst,” in the most sinister voice I’ve ever heard.

It was amazing!

After ToT, I suggested that Erica ride RnR because she loves it so. I ride it sometimes (not every time!), but there is no way I could do it because of my knee. I’m sure I could have gotten in the limo, but getting out is a whole different story! There was no line for RnR either, so after assuring her that I really, truly honest to god didn’t mind waiting, off she went for her date with Aerosmith.

After our thrill ride-induced adrenaline rush passed, we realized that we were wet, cold, and hungry…the trifecta of ickiness!

It wasn’t cold when we arrived at DHS, so naturally we left our hoodies in the car.

Because we’re brilliant like that.

Erica made a run out to get them and moved the car to the handicapped lot while she was at it. Smart girl! It actually worked out OK that they’d been in the car because we were able to put warm, dry hoodies on our cold, wet bodies. Woo hoo!

The next order of business was to get food. Since the park was pretty empty, I figured it couldn’t hurt to try to get in at Sci-Fi, and whaddaya know, in we got! All the cars were taken, so we sat at one of the little tables in the back, which was fine with us. It was warm, dry, and smelled delicious!
We were very hungry, and everything on the menu sounded heavenly. That morning we had determined to eat light today because we’d eaten SO MUCH the last couple of days.

Yeah, that didn’t happen.

Sorry, but there are no pictures of the food from this meal…my camera got a little wet earlier, and for a while I was worried that it would never work again.

We started with the spinach artichoke dip. I don’t know if it was our extreme hunger or what, but it was to die for; and I think it took us about 12 seconds to devour it.

Let me backtrack her for a second…I forgot something!

Due to the pain medication I was taking for my knee, I avoided alcohol all weekend. But then I saw this on the menu at Sci-Fi:

Magical Star Cocktail - Light up your celebration with X-Fusion Organic Mango and Passion Fruit Liqueur, Parrot Bay Coconut Rum, Pineapple Juice, and a souvenir Multicolored Glow Cube

And being responsible went out the window.

Erica pouted, not because she wanted the drink; but because she wanted the glow cube! The waiter overheard me saying that since we were celebrating her birthday, I’d give her the cube; and when he brought the drinks, there were TWO glow cubes in her cherry Coke.

My drink was veryveryvery good, and so was I. I also got an ginger ale and alternated sips.

We both ordered the shrimp pasta (bow tie pasta and sauteed shrimp with olive oil, garlic, basil, and fresh tomatoes, topped with parmesan), and it was SO good. For dessert we ordered one red velvet cheesecake and one peanut butter-chocolate cake to share, and they were sinfully delicious!

Sci-Fi was my second favorite meal of the trip. Erica loved it, too, but thought the desserts at GFC were just a tiny bit better, giving it the edge.

When we left the restaurant, the rain had stopped; and we headed towards the Osborne Lights. I’d given Erica the lowdown on this extravaganza of Christmas awesomeness, but she was unprepared for how amazing it really is!

The lights!

The music!

It’s like being swallowed up by Christmas!

And my camera dried out just in time!

We enjoyed the spectacle for almost an hour before the rain started again. And this time it wasn’t messing around. The word torrential comes to mind.
Erica sprinted for cover, and I followed her as fast as the ECV would go. The first building we came to was the Muppet Show, so we went in to get out of the rain. A show was starting, and since we were there….

I’d never seen the Muppets before, and I wish I could say I loved it. Unfortunately, I didn’t. And neither did Erica.

Oh, well, not even Disney hits a homerun every time!

Once again, the rain had abated somewhat, but we were soaked to the skin (I kid you not…it was like I’d stepped out of a shower); so we decided to call it a night. We were both disappointed because we were looking so forward to EMH, but it wouldn’t have been much fun to stay until midnight if we were cold and wet. And after checking the weather on my phone, I was pretty sure we hadn’t seen the last of the rain, either. As we passed Star Tours, I noticed it had a five minute wait time. I told Erica that is was sure to be a better finale than the Muppets, so in we went.

And, boy, were we glad we did!

We both loved it! And to top it off…

…Erica was…

…wait for it…

…the Rebel Spy!

It was such a great “Last Ride of the Trip”!

Well done, Disney, well done!

We made it back to CBR with no wrong turns. Naturally, just as the trip is ending, I’m starting to know my way around! We drank hot coffee and took hot showers to help us thaw out and relived the highlights of the trip as we packed.

I hate the last night of a Disney trip. You’re still at Disney, which makes you happy; but you have to leave in a few hours, which makes you sad. I wanted to extend the trip a few days…or weeks…anything to make it last longer.
But, alas, that was not to be.

The next morning before Erica woke up I made a quick trip to the Custom House to do her flight check in, but the CM couldn’t give me her boarding passes because she’s 18. But she printed them and said Erica could pick them up on our way out. After going back to the room to get our stuff loaded in the car, we stopped at Port Royale for Mickey waffles because it’s not a Disney trip without having Mickey waffles at least once! We laughed and joked and talked some more about the phenomenal time we’d had. And did our best to pretend like Erica wasn’t getting on a plane and that it would be months before we’d see each other again.

At the airport, we waited until the last possible minute for her to get in the security line, then hugged each other as tightly as possible for as long as possible. I went to sit down so I could watch her until she was out of sight, and she turned around and shouted across the crowd, “I love you, Aunt Lauri!” And I shouted back, “I love you, too, Erica!”

When she was out of sight, I started making my way to the garage; and just as I was getting in the car, my cell phone rang. It was Erica telling me that her flight was delayed an hour. Aaaaaagh! We debated whether or not she should get on the fake monorail while I walked back and we’d meet at the Disney store but ultimately decided not to put her through the security ordeal again or push my knee any further than it had to be pushed. We talked for a few more minutes, said our “I love yous” again and hung up.

I was about half way home when she called again and said the flight had been delayed two more hours but she’d talked to an airline rep who put her on another flight to Charlotte, and she was calling from the plane before she turned her phone off. For someone who had never flown alone before, I thought she was pretty savvy.

She made it home safe and sound, as did I.

And I bet you’re thinking that that’s the end.

Almost, but not quite.

When I got home, I decided to leave my suitcase in the car and let Gabriel bring it in for me, at which time he said, “It’s really light. You always pack way too much junk.” Junk? Hmmph. So I told him that he missed the Disney laundry bag containing all the clothes I’d worn during the trip.

“There’s no laundry bag in the car,” he said with certainty.

I sighed expansively. “Yes, there is.”

“Let’s go look together,” he suggested.

So we did.

And he was right.

I hate when that happens!

Which could only mean that my laundry bag was still at Disney.

Lucky laundry bag!

I called CBR and was told that anything left in the room would be taken to lost and found but there probably hadn’t been enough time for them to drop it off yet. So I called back the next morning, and they assured me that it was there. I was ready to say that I’d drive over on Saturday to pick it up; but before I could, the CM asked for my address and said they’d ship my stuff.

And that’s how my clothes got an extra two days at Disney!

Epilog: Because Disney is the king of marketing, there was a Disney Cruise brochure in our room. Erica took it home with her (another free souvenir), and my sister called a few days later to say that Troy (Erica’s dad) was very interested in going on one. I told her about the land ‘n sea packages, and now we’re trying to figure out how and when we can make this happen. Even Gabriel is fully on board…even, dare I say…excited about it.

So, just to stoke the fire a little, yesterday I drove out to the port and got some photos of the Dream, which I promptly emailed to my sister.

The day was a bit cloudy, but I got pretty close…I was VERY excited. Gabriel was impressed by the ship…it made the other ships that were docked look like toy boats!

I was surprised we didn't like the Muppets, too...I mean, Kermit is the coolest, right? Maybe being cold and wet had something to do with it!

I hope we can make the cruise happen! If I dream it, it's certain to come true!
