I first posted this story years ago on the IB. Those were the days when the IB was THE place to post. I must confess I jumped ship for the fame (and view counts) of the CB. (snoopy you hit the nail on the head)

Ding dong…trick or treat...hey look it’s a DEAD GUY…

When I was in the 4th or 5th grade a group of us found a dead guy while trick or treating. Growing up on our dead end street (block) you had the big kids and the little kids. The big kids stood on the corner and took the little kids candy and pelted the little kids (us) with eggs and flour socks every Halloween. Us little kids had it rough. We hated the big kids but we were defenseless in our battle against them. Until that one Halloween night when the little kids found the dead guy. We became instant urban legends, to the dismay of the big kids. (ha ha ha)

A group of us little kids went over to the next dead end block at around 7 p.m on Halloween night. (times were much different back then) Our goal was to visit every house we could and get as much candy as possible. (hey free candy what could be better?) We went to houses that no one would dare go to, we battled dogs, weeds, locked gates, just to get that piece of candy. Well on the next block the houses were all situated on hills, you would have to climb up two long flights of stairs to get to the front doors. Not many kids bothered making the climb; some felt that it was a waste of time and energy. (what were they NUTS!)

Around 5 of us decided to hit every house on that block, we climbed the two flights of stairs on all of the houses. We started up the stairs of a house that no kid (or adult) would go; it was the house of the neighborhood grump. It was an old spooky dilapidated house. As we came to the top step we all looked in at the glass front door. We looked passed the second glass door and saw a big heavy man sitting on the inside staircase, his eyes were wide open. (hey, it’s the grump) He was just sitting there not moving an inch. We all starting saying “this guy is really into Halloween, maybe he is not such a grump after all”. But after a while we realized that no human could keep his eyes open without blinking that long. (not even Superman) So we came to the kid conclusion that the guy was dead. (so that’s what a dead guy looks like) We were beside ourselves, not with fear, but with pride. We actually had discovered something super cool. (wait till the big kids hear about this)

We all went back to our main base of operations (our block) to get some kid supplies, flashlights, rope, toy guns, rocks, sticks, etc. We spread the news about the dead guy to other little kids on our block. Some parents overheard us telling our story and dismissed it as a little kid thing. Groups of little kids started converging on the dead guy’s house. (there was actually a waiting line, we should of installed FP) The news got to the big kids, who just bushed it off as a little kid joke. (yeah right, a dead guy, ha) I remember all of us just staring at the dead guy looking to see if he moved. Some still thought it was just some kind of cool Halloween prank that the dead guy was pulling. We didn’t want to tell our parents because if it were a prank we would all get yelled at for bothering them. Eventually one of the dead guy’s neighbors came over to see what the commotion was all about, (hey no cutting the line, lady) she soon realized that the dead guy was indeed dead. She called the cops and when the black and white (cop car) showed up we had to give them our names and story. It turns out the dead guy had a massive heart attack and died on his stairs. (sad)
The big kids still took our candy and pelted us with eggs and flour socks even more so. Although my big brother did say that the little kids were pretty cool for finding a dead guy.

Like I said we became instant urban legends after we found the dead guy. If I meet someone from the “old” neighborhood, the story about the dead guy will always come up. (hey do you remember when we found da dead guy?)

I think if this happened now days, a kid in the 4th grade would be on the ball enough to call 911 right away. Back then kids in the 4th grade didn’t know what was going on. (was there even a 911 to call?)

PS – I also have a story about finding a “dead guy in a car”. That happened in the summer of 1970. I will save that for a don’t do drugs thread. (ahhh city life)

Happy Halloween. Got any spooky stories?

(Judy from Boise please don’t reply to this thread, I don’t want it locked and deleted again)(lol)

PPS – this happened to me years before “Stand by Me” was written.

Life, back then, sure had its innocence, didn't it. I remember going trick or treating in California when I was in grade school. Staying out past dark, with just your friends, not worrying about abductions or stuff. Then we grew up.

And, yes, the dead guy story is creepy. ;)

Oh, Charlie...

I literally lost my reputation on THAT thread!

I will NEVER forget posting my "dead guy" reply and having the whole thing LOCKED!

Then you posted a thread with all of the names of the people who made the thread so darned macabre that the admin said "NO MORE"! http://www.plauder-smilies.de/laugh1.gif

I felt like a CELEBRITY!! charlienj is admonishing ME!!

Quite a day back in the day!

Thanks for the memories!

Thanks, hey those were some good times on the IB. Sad to see it go.

Yes, when I first posted it, it lasted I think 1 full day before Pete put the kibosh on it.

My original post asked DISer’s to share stories about finding dead guys. Well to my surprise I was not the only DISer who found a dead guy.

Pete was nice enough to first post a warning saying something like: “…even though this thread is intriguing in a macabre way…please do not post anything that is too graphic…”

Well even with Pete’s warning CLEARLY posted, a few DISer’s who will remain nameless found it necessary to post some very graphic details about finding (or seeing) dead people. (the details were more graphic then an episode of CSI)

That was it Pete had the thread killed. (pun intended)

Believe it or not those nameless DISer’s later became of all things DIS moderators. ;)
