Can you get any benefits if you don't have any points yet??

I signed up because folks here suggested that even new members get treated better than they are entitled to. Several have been given 'better' rooms simply be asking nicely. I'm going to try that on this trip but I'm not getting my hopes up as the place is sold out for my week and there's less chance they'll have an available upgrade to give me. It didn't cost me anything, so nothing is lost.

I use the Starwood card frequently and I don't think that points matter. In fact, I don't think that the people you would ask for benefits (ie upgrades, etc.) are privy to your points balance.

Yes they can see your points balance from what I have been told - if they access the right screen in the Starwood system and you have used your SPG number when making the reservation.
If you signed up after you make your res make sure you call Swan/Dolphin back and give them your SPG number so it is attached to your reservation.
And they do try hard to give SPG members their requests when they can and there is avaliablity
IMO if you are going to stay at the Dolphin or Swan you should enroll in SPG prior to your stay - if no other reason then you will earn points for that stay!

I enrolled in the spg prior to my trip and then call the Dolphin to give them my spg # to attach to my reservation that I made prior to joining spg. Without points, I was upgraded to CL on the two rooms I booked with the teacher rate. Follow all the advice on these Boards, a terrific help. Please ask questions and you will find everyone so helpful.
