View Full Version : Anywhere to play poker on Disney Wonder?

(My apologies if this is an inappropriate topic for a Disney cruise)

I'm taking my wife & kids on a Disney cruise (the Wonder) for the first time on Nov. 6th. We've been on many other cruises, primarily Carnival, but this is our first Disney cruise. I will be celebrating my birthday on-board, and historically I've hosted a poker game or tournament for my b-day. I really enjoy the game, particularly the social aspects of it (vs. the "gambling"). It's fun to joke & have some beers over a low-stakes game.

The "problem," of course, is that there is no casino on-board. I don't really care about other casino games, but there doesn't seem to be a card room or library on the ship either. So I have two questions:

1. Is there someplace on-board that would be a good place for a game? Are the standard inside (category 11) cabins big enough to hold a game for 6-8 people? Is there a table in the cabin that's big enough?

2. Does Disney have a policy about this? If I tried to get a game going in some public space, would they have a problem with it? When I say low-stakes, I mean playing for no more than $20 to $40.

Thanks for any advice anyone might have on the above. And if any other poker enthusiasts are going on the Nov. 6th 2011 cruise on the Wonder, let me know - Friday, Nov. 11th is the day I'd like to have a game. If I get some interest (esp. if someone has a big cabin to play in), I'll bring chips and cards. Thanks!!

I have no idea how to answer your questions but we are going to be on the Wonder for that sailing. I would be interested. I will PM you. Check out our pre cruise thread. http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2749485

you can play games in "diversions" - I think that's the sports bar - I know board games are available there.

I have seen poker games being played up on Deck 9 at the far end of the adult pool area (smoking section).

But for an inside venue and also think Diversions may be appropriate....as long as no scheduled event is happening at the time.

The cabins do not have a table big enough at all....just a small coffee table.

Thanks all for the great advice. I think I'll try to get a game going in Diversions.

My birthday is 11-11-11, so at 11:11pm I hope to be playing poker! :cool1: I'll try to be in Diversions sometime after 9pm on Friday night to get a game going - be there if you're interested, and look for the guy with some poker chips :thumbsup2. I may try to do it some other night as well, if I can get enough interest. Feel free to email me directly if so at tcanty2 "at" yahoo.com. Thanks! :cool2:

I have seen a few games played at Diversions. I don't believe that there is a policy against this. In fact, I am surprised that DCL doesn't run some kind of event during days at seas.

Good Luck!

We had a large group of us on the double dip cruise to CC this summer. We brought our own chips & cards and played. Had a great time & never had anyone question us. We, too, enjoy the social part of it. playing with chips didn't make it look like a "cash" game, although it was (small stakes for sure). We found a spot where there was no event going on, so bar service wasn't available.... but we had no trouble finding a cold beer close by.

Just a follow-up - on the particular cruise I was on, there was just never enough people in the "adult" area of the ship (Route 66) to get a game together. Diversions definitely would have been the place (although Cadillac lounge could have worked), but I never saw either area get very busy. Thanks for all the advice though!

Hope that you had a Wonderful birthday!!
For future reference, you could probably gather a group of like-minded players from your cruise meet thread beforehand, rather than hoping for a group of players to happen along. Our cruise-meet group had a mixology class and a Champagne Girls gathering as well as a football pool and t-shirts!!
I know that this is in hindsight, but hopefully you will cruise again - and for anyone else so inclined!!
