Is this a "bad word"?

Well, obviously the DIS censor does not think so, and I say it all the time.... but do you find it offensive? I also wouldn't want my young child saying it either, does that make it offensive? I think 'dam' (I know it's spelled incorrectly) is a cuss word, but my husband does not.


What do you think?

Would I want my child saying it? Nope, but then again, he's only 2! :teeth: I think people can be offended by what the word is intended to replace, though. :)

Yeah, I can see people getting offended by what it is intended to replace, but could just as easily say 'stinkin' and no one would be offended..... I wonder if it's a regional dialect thing?

My colorful expressions would never make it onto the DIS. :)

I usually use Freakin' in place of Friggin'.

its a word i use very, very often. I don't think its a bad word...I think its a good substitute for a bad word. you could also say freakin' thats a good sub too.

Of course it is. It's another word for the "F" word. Neither word offends me, but it does bother me that one is censored and the other is not. :rolleyes:

To answer your original question, no it is not a "bad" word. I find the notion of some words being good and some bad rather asinine. There's a time and place for everything. :)

I feel the same way, I think there is no such thing as a bad word....there are just inappropriate times to use certain words, but in the right context or conversation it can be appropriate. I don't go around talking like a drunken sailor either though, but I have been known to say a few naughty words when the situation was appropriate.

I agree, no "words" are bad only the intended meaning of them. If you are saying it as a way of getting around the censors and still saying an"F" word then it is "bad". But I don't find any word offensive. I find it amusing that some people will say one word and it means the exact same thing as a "swear word" but will act indignant if someone uses the"sw".

OP is not being flamed. This is a good question.

I remember reading some "English" 1800's "porn" My Secret Life where they referred to copulation as "frigging", hence what we use our English version of the same in sentences the same way.

All words are only as good or bad as they are perceived.

Yeah, I think of it as a bad word. My BIL replaces the F word with the word "frappin". He is a high school coach so he is around high schoolers all the time and he picks up on all their words. This year it is "frappin" this and "frappin" that. I think I respect him a bit more if he didn't talk the way he does.
I say the word crap... I know I have offended some by my use of it. :( My parents were always so strict about "bad words". For some reason I was allowed to say "crap" and "God" as in "Oh my God". It is a very hard habit to break.

I kind of cringe when I hear it, but less than when I hear the real "F-bomb" (as DD, 16 calls it ;) ). I feel the same about "freaking" and the latest, as heard from eavesdropping on teenage conversations ;) : "fracking ". I guess because like other posters have said, it really MEANS the other ("F-bomb").
That being said, in a major vent to DH a few weeks ago, sputtering about a situation/person at work, I used the term "freaking idiot'" to describe someone ....then heard DD in the next room say to her friend on the phone "whoa, my MOM just dropped an F-bomb" :rolleyes:

I use the work "suck", and forget that some poeple consider it a semi-swear word. I know i used it a few times in lecture ( private Christian univ )and got very startled looks !

I say crap sometimes too, although I feel it is more of a "bad word" than friggin...I'm not sure why.

In our house I don't let the teens use friggin or freakin in everyday conversation around me. In a temper or something similar I usually let it slide. I have told my sons that the language that they use around other guys playing hockey or football should be different that what they use around moms or other females. Don't curse in front of women. Also, they know I feel it is wrong to take God's name in vain as it violates a ten commandment.
The new thing here is my 18yo college daughter has been testing the waters by using crap when in a fit. My sister and I crap up as do her brothers. She is a super straight laced kid and it makes me feel she is more of an ordinary kid when she does this. She too has been taught there is a time and place for everything.
So, I guess I think friggin' is a curse, but a mild one.

I'm not sure if it would be perceived as a bad word or not for adults. I'm sure many kids would get sent to the principle or their parent(s) would get a nice letter from the teacher for saying it though.

A good friend of mine would freak when I'd say piss around her. I'd say 'piss ant', or 'I feel pissy'. She told me it was a bad word. I disagree.:teeth: After her divorce a couple of years ago, she told me she felt pissy about her ex.;)

My mother definately feels that saying the word 'fart' is cursing. i try so hard not to say it around her but I mess up all the time. i can't figure out why, it's not like it's a word I use frequently. Right now I believe I only use the word when mom's in hearing distance :rolleyes:
