View Full Version : Interest Thread - Ribbon Swap?

I hope I'm following proper protocol. It has been a long time since I last posted on the boards. I've been away from my scrapbooing for a while now - turns out a two year-old and a business can keep you really busy ! ;) My crafty side is starting to emerge again. I actually started a paper piecing completely out of the blue the other day!
One of the things I wish I had more of a variety of is ribbon. I couldn't remember the last place I participated in a swap, so I came here!
Anyone interested in a ribbon swap? Anyone with more hosting experience interested in hosting one?

Hello!:) We quite often have ribbon as one (or more) groups of a general embellishment swap (e.g. brads, eyelets etc.) Not sure if we've got one planned currently, but its one of my favourites:goodvibes

I admit I like ribbon too. I have quite a bit, but I don't mind having more of it :rotfl2: There's always something I get in a swap that I don't have access to where I live. I love to do swaps.

I'd love this! I'm ribbon obsessed!!!!!

I would participate in a ribbon swap. When a scrapbook store went out of business a few years ago, I kind of stocked up. I have some spools with far more than I could use.

Do you all want me to host this and have it do 11/10 with the paper doll swap w/ those participating in that... and those who aren't would that be enough time???
PrincessNancy96
10-04-2011, 12:24 PM
And if so, break it down by color, seasons (together), holidays(togethter) and 10 per group...
ideas, thoughts, suggestions?? and how much per person (1 yd = 3 ft)
Ribbon only or do we want fibers?
VickiV
10-05-2011, 01:25 AM
I think we did 3 yds of fiber in the past. My local stores haven't had any interesting fibers lately. I think 1 yd of ribbon per person is a good amount. You could have themed groups, such as Disney, holidays, colors, etc. or just have sign ups for spots for random ribbons. It doesn't take much to shop for ribbon locally. However, in the past, there have been people that have ordered online. I don't know how much time would need to be alloted for that. Also, if it was due November 10, would that cut MazdaUK and PrincessJayne out of the swap due to their mailing time? I would probably sign up no matter how it's set up.
VickiV
MazdaUK

I could probably just about make that - it depends how soon the sign-ups go up, as I'll have to order a few things. and I can't do that til I know how many and which group. A week later would be better.
I'd say yard of ribbon, but maybe 5-6 per group instead of 10? (Its harder to find full spools here). Could we also have like the scrap paper - send in a yard of random ribbon (or more) and get a suprise back? I've got lots of odd yards which I won't use (surplus from swaps etc. where I miscalculated :rolleyes1)
PrincessNancy96

Why don't we shoot for sign ups the end of November due in Jan that way we could give everyone time to shop...
Let me put something together and get some input...

I'd vote for both themed groups and a "scrap" ribbon group. A Disney group would be amazing! Maybe Christmas, Halloween, brights, boy, girl???

Now that y'all have explained this it sounds like fun :)
I thought you meant to just buy spools of ribbon and trade those--clearly I was confused :confused3

Hi ladies! Nan asked if I'd like to hostesses this one, and I accepted. My momma, wdwmickey (Cheryl) will be my co-host, and both of us are happy to answer any questions you may have.
I'm thinking of having sign-ups on October 29 (it's a Saturday so I can monitor sign-ups) with a due date of December 31; would this work for everyone?
I like the group ideas I've seen so far and would love to see more.
wdwmickey
10-05-2011, 08:43 PM
We've been brainstorming ;)
How about a sign-up date of October 15? Groups of 5. 1 or 2 yards of ribbon? What about width...maximum 5/8 inch??? Or do we want groups for narrow and groups for wide?
Group ideas:
Pastels
Brights
Earth tones
Stripes
Polka dots
Animal Print
Holiday--Christmas; Halloween; mixed holiday group?
Disney
Sports
Birthday
Surprise (ie: scraps)
What do y'all think? Any and all suggestions welcomed :)
LOVEMY3KIDDOS
10-05-2011, 09:11 PM
OK...here's my suggestions...I wouldn't specify width, but that's just me. So, either way is ok. I would make two seperate groups for Halloween and Christmas and then maybe another mixed holiday. There are so many options! Then, what about animal print, sports, birthday, boys, girls, earth tones.
wdwmickey
10-05-2011, 09:49 PM
I know I was just looking on ebay and came up with a ton more ideas ;) I'm thinking animal print; any pattern; definately seperate Christmas and Halloween; patriotic.
I'm not sure on the width...we just never use ribbon wider than 5/8" for scrapping.
VickiV
10-06-2011, 12:22 AM
In prior ribbon swaps, I have gotten some small spools of ribbon back, the ones about 1 1/2" across the spool. I imagine it's a matter of convenience to just go buy something already packaged, or perhaps they were on clearance :thumbsup2Mostly though, I have received cut lengths of ribbon.

I've had some small spools - I think they were from a mixed pack by Basic Grey. I've got some very girly (ballet shoe print!) ribbon left from a swap but I wouldn't want a whole girly group, so I'd put that into a mixed group.
I think a yard is about right - that lines two pages and gives some trim for extra elements:goodvibes
I will have to mail by 4 December (what with Christmas) to get to you by 12/31

10-06-2011, 08:18 AM
Mazda ~ will that give you enough time? We can totally move the due date into January. Let me know what works best for you.
I'm really liking the idea of doing color groups. How do you guys feel about that? For instance red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, etc and then the ribbon could be stripes, dots, or whatever pattern. KWIM?
Let me and my momma know how you prefer the groups to be set up since we've never even thought about a ribbon swap we're not quite sure what would be the best way to set the groups ;)
LOVEMY3KIDDOS
10-06-2011, 08:51 AM
Love the colors idea!! I LOVE ribbon!!! LOL I will be so excited!
Cheryl - I agree on the limiting the wide end...I thought you meant to not allow anything thin. Not that I use super-thin ribbon, but some I use is maybe not quite 1/2"...but it could be as I don't know that I have ever actually measured!! LOL
Did you decide to do this the 15th for sign-ups or keeping the 29th? I will need a buddy if it's the 29th. The 15th I can handle on my own. Let me know! I will be getting ready to start picking some up little by little as soon as the groups are up!! :cool1:

10-06-2011, 09:35 AM
I'm really pushing for sign-ups on the 15th ;) I'm hoping Rachel can get the rough draft of the groups ready and posted by this Saturday. She's so excited that Nan trusted her with hosting :goodvibes
PrincessNancy96
10-06-2011, 09:46 AM
I like the color idea best..that way we could get solid, strip, dots, flowers....
I'm not sure if I'll be able to play....but I'm going to try... I know that in the past most of the ribbon has been cut...but others had just went and purchased those dollar spools and called it a day... it was whatever worked best for the swapper...
Don't feel obligated to make this a huge swap.. We can always have one now..and then turn around and have one again in the spring.. and then again in the fall... there is never enough ribbon!
I know you'll do well MDD!!! I have no doubt!!!
Just let me know what date works for you.. I've got a soccer game on the 15th..but am in town so if you need me you or mom can hit my cell phone.. the 29th, I will be partying it up with my 18 year old for her birthday!!! (which is actually the 30th but Saturdays are better party days and who knows what her friends have in store for her)...
wdwmickey
10-06-2011, 09:51 AM
I think we'll go with colors then. Rachel and I talked about it this morning and she really loved the idea of any pattern by color.
Nan--I love the idea of doing this swap maybe twice a year or even quarterly. That way we could take advantage of the seasonal ribbon at the craft stores ;)
PrincessNancy96
10-06-2011, 10:01 AM
That would work out nicely..and wouldn't make Rachel feel as if she can't say no... we don't want to lose her in a pile of ribbons and decide hosting isn't for her... :)

Just trying to get a sort-of plan in my head...going with colors...does that mean you will or will not be doing a Disney, Halloween and / or Christmas group? They were the ones I was most interested in...I'll probably play either way, but trying to make a plan of action!! LOL Just not sure I fully understand "color"...just like a red group, a yellow group, and orange group....etc? Or, will there still be any color combos? Sorry to be a pain, but I want to be on the lookout for some great ribbon. If I see it, I want to buy it before it disappears!! :lmao:

So I'm thinking colors, Disney, Halloween and Christmas. I'll have the list posted by Saturday and I'm thinking the 15th would be better for sign-ups. That way, we can take advantage of sales on Halloween ribbon. :goodvibes
For colors, I'm thinking one for each color of the rainbow, as well as black, white, and brown, and they can have different patterns on them.
We'll make the maximum width be 1".
MazdaUK
10-07-2011, 03:35 AM
Colours works for me. Could we also have a random pattern group? Not so much like the scrap one where you'd have to work out who did what, but where you'd still send in x bundles of ribbon but they wouldn't all have to be the same pattern. I love surprises! By the way, can you tell I still really want to get rid of the ballet shoe ribbon?:rolleyes1:rotfl2:
If its a later sign-up could we have mid/late January due date please? I just get nervous of stuff going missing in December with all the extra mail around!
wdwmickey
10-07-2011, 08:13 AM
Mazda--we're going with an October 15th sign-up :) We'll definately have a mixed/surprise group! Also, we're planning on doing the ribbon swap every 4-6 months. That way we can make it more "seasonal" and take advantage of sales at the craft stores.

How is this working? Are we (for example) sending one or two yards of one ribbon per person in the group? Or do we send 1 or 2 yards of (for example) 4 or 5 different ribbons per person in the group? If the second option is the requirement, then that would be say 4 - 10 yards needed of each ribbon, right? Sorry if this is confusing everyone...just trying to solidify my game plan again!! LOL

It's actually in Holly's town. I love it there. She's doing okay. Has a septic issue with the town, not thrilled about that, but has no choice but to do their requested changes.
Come on over for a visit, I'd love to meet you!

Rachel and I decided on 1 yard of ribbon per person last night, so 5 yards of ribbon if there are 5 people in the group.

Ok...so we are only sending in one type also? Not 2-3 or whatever per person? Lol I feel like a huge pain with the questions!!!!
wdwmickey
10-07-2011, 08:49 AM
I think so...how does everyone feel about that? One type of ribbon per person or two?
Rachel and I are kind of "feeling" our way through this, since we've never done a ribbon swap. I know we'll learn from this one and "tweak" the next ribbon swap in the spring.

What has been done in the past.. is you sign up for the groups just like a regular swap...
So, Pink group...
1. WDWM ~ solid
2. MDD ~ polka dot
3. lm3ks ~ pattern
4. PN ~ stripes
5. AWM ~ surprise (so it could be any of the above or whatever she finds)
Each person sends a yard per person of their ribbon.. so there will be 5 individual baggies in one big group bag...
Christmas Group you can do just as group... anything goes... doesn't have to specify...
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
