I found this to be an extraordinary article.
I wonder why this private collector has chosen now to allow the ossuary to be examined by an biblical archeologist.
And I do agree with the final statement. If this box is found to be authentic, it should be held for pubic viewing in a museum.

I thought pretty much everyone knew that Jesus lived (even atheists & followers of other religions), the only debate is about him being the Messiah.

Very interesting!!
I had always thought that Jesus had a brother. However, a few months ago, DH and I had a discussion about this, and DH says that Mary, mother of Jesus, remained a virgin her entire life, and therefore, Jesus had no siblings.
I'll have to show this to him . . .

Deb -
Most Christians believe that Mary had no other children. James, Brother of the Lord, is generally believed to be a child of Joseph from a previous marriage.

actually TF - many christians do believe Mary had other children. i think it's catholic doctrine that Mary remained virginal throughout her life, but i'm not sure.

Actually, 2 years ago DH and I went to germany to see the Passion Play at Oberammergau, and they showed Jesus' brother throughout the play. My understanding is that the Passion Play at Oberammergau is fairly close to Biblically correct.

Make that two. I'm agnostic. Also, have any of you ever taken into consideration the idea that a man named Jesus may have once lived, but he was never actually the son of God?

Actually, MANY, MANY people do, Roque.
They are called Jews and Muslims.

I thought Jews just believed God never had a son.

Well, either way. I think it's safe to say that we'll never truly know.

Just a few thoughts here:
Number One:
Well, either way. I think it's safe to say that we'll never truly know.
Truth is, one day we WILL know. Hopefully, you (generic) won't have to explain why you thought otherwise.
Number Two:
This is from the first chapter of the book of Matthew vs. 24 and 25
24When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord commanded. He brought Mary home to be his wife,25but she remained a virgin until her son was born. And Joseph named him Jesus.
Emphasis mine.

From what I understand, they believe he hasn't come yet.
Also if you read the article, they said that they won't mention "brother of" unless it was someone of importance.
I think eventually we will find out. As to whether or not he is/was the son of God, that is all a matter of faith. No matter what you believe, there are things that science cannot prove that are in existence even without religion.

resident Jewish expert weighing in here.
historically there is evidence of a preacher named Jesus in the Galilee under Roman occupation. His name is mentioned in the contemporaneous writings of a Romanized Jewish chronologer named Josephus. Most of what we know about 1st Century Palestine comes from Josephus' writings. "Jesus" by the way, is the Greek version of the name. if I recall correctly, the Aramaic version (Aramaic being the language spoken in the Galilee in that era) was closer to Yeshua --- Joshua. actually a fairly common name. to deny the existence of Jesus as a man is not logical. to give him status as anything other than an itinerant preacher -- that's theology.
my understanding of Islam is that Jesus is considered a prophet on par with Moses and the other prophets of the Old Testament. only Christians deify Jesus. I'm sure our resident experts will correct me if I misunderstood this part.
as for Jewish theology -- when the Messiah comes, he will rescue and redeem the Jewish people as a whole, not act as a personal savior. in Jewish theology, he will not be "the son of G-d" or have any qualities of godhood. that's where Jewish and Christian theology diverge.

Excellent point BR! I do believe,as most historians do,that Jesus did indeed live...What your individual beliefs are after that are based on your Religion or non-belief. Jenz thanks for the post, very interesting :)
