We usually sail in the fall and have sailed in October once (in 2000), the water was very warm in both Key West and Castaway Cay on that trip. We didn't go in the water at St. Thomas, but I would assume it was even warmer there, as it's much further south. At Castaway Cay, we got tired before we got cold.
Our most recent sailing was last December, and the water was still plenty warm on that trip, especially in St. Maarten. We also spent several hours in the water at Castaway Cay.
Hope this helps.

We just returned from the Eastern 7 day on Sept 28th. We snorkled at St Marteen(Pinel Island snorkel tour), St Thomas (on our own at Saphire Beach), and Castaway Cay. The water temperature all 3 times was great. It wasn't the slightest bit cold. I would guess maybe the temp was around 80 degrees. You will love it.
