With things so hetic I have been getting out the crockpot all the time these days. Today I'm trying to make chicken filling for burritos, we'll see if they turn out. I have been using my crockpot about twice a week. My DH has been working a lot of hours and the kids have games and sports activities and the crockpot works out great.

Is anyone else using their crockpot lately? What have you been making? I've made spagetti sauce, shredded beef sandwiches and the normal roasts and chicken and noodles.

Do you cook noodles in your crockpot? I read where they didn't turn out well and have never tried it. If you do, how do you do it?
Thanks!

By the way, turkey breast are GREAT cook in there upside down...very moist! Layer hamburger, potatoes, onion slices and cream of mushroom soup...very good!

Thanks for reminding me that I have a crock pot!

I like to make hot chicken salad in it. You have to use already cooked chicken, but it has cream of chicken soup, celery, almonds, etc.
It is sooooo gooood! My DD and DH could eat almost all of it!

I think I will get out my crockpot cookbook and start planning meals!

I made stew in mine yesterday. The weather is all cold and rainy here and my house smelled awesome. My nephew and DD were like "What smells so good?" when they got home from school. I made my friend who is expecting twins a "crockpot cookbook" b/c her Dr. told her to take it easy. She loved it. I think she has been crock pot cooking everyday! The best part: Only 1 dish to wash!

:D I love my crockpot!!!

Seems like I use mine all the time, but it's probably about 2 (sometimes 3) times a week. I make all sorts of dishes...

Stew, soup, roast beef, chicken, chili, beans (I love 15 bean soup with kiebalsa) ....

Made roast beef, with onions, potatos and carrots yesterday. Going to make a nice stew with the leftovers tomorrow!

So nice to be able to do errands and have dinner waiting when you return! Gotta love it. :)

Well, I usually do my roast like this: (It's really easy!)

I place the roast in the crockpot, put an envelope of Lipton Recipe Secrets, Beefy Onion --- (Recipe soup mix) over the roast. Add potatoes and carrots (sometimes I'll add green beans or peas.) I use whatever is on hand. Sometimes I use fresh produce or canned it doesn't really matter, it always turns out great. :D I add about about a cup & 1/2 of water give or take, (Depends on if I use canned veggies --- then I'll use some of the liquid from that.) If it's a large roast I'll put the crockpot on high for about 3-4 hours, then turn the temp down to low for another 3-4 hours or so.

I use the leftover beef for BBQ (Shred some and marinade in BBQ sauce for at least 3-4 hours prior to heating).Or I'll make a stew or soup by dicing the meat, adding veggies, & adding beef broth (or the liquid from the roast earlier) or tomatoes (depends on if it's a stew or soup you want), sometimes I'll add alittle diced onion and let it simmer in the crockpot. It's fun to play around and experiment. I always add a little of this and alittle of that.

For chili:

I brown about a pound of hamburger (---sometimes I'll add green pepper and onion to the hamburger as it cooks-- that's if I don't use the Chili Tomato Sauce) , drain and put in the crockpot. I add 1 can (about 14 oz) of Hunts Chili Tomato sauce, then I add 1 can of Hunts Diced Tomato, with Basil, Garlic and Oregano (I love that stuff!), and I add one can of kidney beans (drained and rinsed). Set the crockpot on low and let it cook for about 8 hours. I like to serve it in a bowl with Fritos and sour cream, and shredded cheddar cheese.

If there are leftovers I have it later in the week over a baked potato with the sour cream and shredded cheese. Or maybe I'll use it for Tacos, or over noodles.

I love the crockpot because it frees me up to do other things.

That's a start!

I made beef stew this week. At noon, I put stew meat in the bottom with a chopped onion and some sliced celery. (Dry onion soup works great, too!) Then I covered the meat with some water. I simmered the meat all afternoon. Then I added chunks of potato and carrot after the kids came home from school. Close to dinner, I added some pre-cooked pasta that I had leftover. Right before serving, I added a little more than a cup of fat free sour cream. I stirred it around until it melted.

My family doesn't really like soups and stews very much, but this one is a favorite. The sour cream is the key ingredient. It thickens the broth and makes it taste wonderful. Add salt and pepper to taste. Just add some warm bread from the bread machine and you have a great fall meal, in my opinion.

annemariec, don't put it in until you are ready to eat. You don't want it to cook with the stew. Add it at the last minute, after you have turned off the pot, stirring to melt it. Your family will love it. My teenager scraped the crockpot clean. He ate 3 big bowls!

MerryPoppins, thanks. That's what I'll do. I wanted a way to give it a little different taste. Sometimes you want something a little different. Always looking for tips and tricks.

MerryPoppins, just wanted you to know adding sour cream to the stew was a hit for dinner! Thanks! It made it creamy and rich. Especially good for a cool, rainy evening. :D

My husband said, "This is great, what did you do differently??"

Right now I have the crockpot on low with some water and dish detergent. It really helps to loosen up the cooked on stuff. I keep it on for about half and hour or so and turn it off. Clean up is a breeze that way.

I'm no great cook, but I've been inspired by all the crockpot posts, and I've used mine quite a lot the last few weeks. Mostly I use a jar of sauce, with either chicken or sausages - even though it's ready made sauce, it's still so nice to come in from work and smell something cooking. We have been eating much earlier too, which is great for my dd as it means she gets to bed ontime.

The last one we did was chicken curry -and it was delicious - I just made the rice when I got in and dinner was ready when the rice was done.

We love a sunday roast chicken!

But even better are the leftovers -- chicken sandwiches, chicken salad sandwiches.

Weekly, I take chicken breasts (skin on) and cook in my crock pot, and its great. Just like the sunday leftovers.

Pour veggie oil in the crockpot, enough to cover bottom.
add chunks of white onion, carrots and celery.
Place washed chicken on top.
Add salt, pepper.
Add water, to cover chicken.
Put on high until cooked.

Enjoy!

CROCKPOT ROAST STICKY CHICKEN

4 tsp salt
2 tsp paprika
1 tsp cayenne pepper
1 tsp onion powder
1 tsp thyme
1 tsp white pepper
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp black pepper
1 large roasting chicken
1 cup chopped onion

In a small bowl, thoroughly combine all the spices. Remove giblets from chicken, clean the cavity well
and pat dry with paper towels. Rub the spice
mixture into the
chicken, both inside and out, making sure it is evenly distributed and down deep into the skin. Place in a
resealable plastic bag, seal and refrigerate
overnight.

When ready to cook chicken put the onions into the cavity, put the bird into the crockpot and do not
add any liquid. As the cooking process goes on it will
produce it's
own juices. Cook on low 8 to 10 hours and it will be falling off the bone tender.

I have made Corned beef and cabbage which my DH says is the best he has ever had (probably because there is a can of beer involved in the cooking)
I have made beef stroganoff, and beef stew as well as pot roast.

I love everything that has come out of my crock pot thus far, but some of your recipes sound great!!

Here is the Corned beef and Cabbage recipe, I thought i had the beef stew one on me and surprise I didn't, I will have to post that one tomorrow!

1 (2 - 2 1/2 LB) Corned beef with seasoning packet
4 Med Carrots, cut into 1 inch pieces
4 Med Red Potato's, cut into 1 inch pieces
1 Med Carrot, cut into wedges
1 (12 ounce) can of beer
Water
8 thin wedges of Cabbage

1) In slow cooker combine all veggies. Top with Corned beef, sprinkle with seasoning. Add Beer and enough water to just cover brisket.

2) Cover; cook on low for 10 to 12 hours

3) Remove brisket and cover with foil.
Add Cabbage wedges to veggies and broth
Cover, cook on high for an additional 30 to 35 mins or until crisp - tender.

Enjoy!

Just tried this one, easy and good.

Spare Ribs
Sliced Onion
Barbeque Sauce

Place all in crock and cook on low for at least 6 hours. Yummy!

I did this by the seat of my pants, and it came out fine, so I didn't put exact measurements here. Made my own barbeque sauce using equal measures of: Worcestershire, soy sauce, honey, ketchup, and Dijon mustard. It's something I've used for years and my family really like it. I'd never used it in the crockpot before, but I will again!

We had this one tonight. You can change the veggies around if there is something you would rather have. If you want to shorten the cooking time, you could put the onions and celery in with the hamburger when you brown it.

Hamburger Vegetable Soup

1 lb hamburger, cooked and drained
2 onions, chopped
4 celery ribs, chopped
4 potatoes, cubed
2 cans corn, drained
2 cans tomato soup (or 1 family size can)
water
seasoning to taste

Put the onions, celery, potatoes, beef, corn and soup in the crockpot. Fill the soup can(s) with water and pour over the top. Stir gently. Cook on low about 6-8 hours, or on high 4-6 hours. Season to taste. Sooooo easy!

It turned out really well! It disappeared at the table. :D
I was playing around with some Progresso soup. It didn't have very much substance, but the cheese flavor was good. It's pretty chilly here and with warm rolls it hit the spot!

Chicken, Potato, Broccoli & Cheese Soup

1 can Progresso Potato, Broccoli & Cheese Soup
1 can sliced potatoes
1 large boneless skinless chicken breast
1/3 onion diced
1 (approx.) cup mixed veggies (frozen or canned)
1/2 cup sour cream

Pour the can of Progresso Potato, Broccoli & Cheese Soup in the crock pot. Set the temp to warm. Add can of sliced potatoes, 1 cup of mixed veggies and the diced onion.

I poached the chicken. You guys probably know how to do it, but it was my first time. I read about it somewhere on the internet. The blurb stated poaching the chicken keeps it moist and juicy. It did make a moister chicken for me. Anyway for those that haven't done it --- here's how: (I used breasts), you bring the water to a rolling boil. Add the chicken and boil for 5 min. ( I did it about 10 min.), then turn the burner off, take the pot off the stove and cover it for 15 minutes! That's it! (or you could use the George Foreman for this recipe...)

Dice the chicken add to the soup. Season with salt and pepper. Re-set the temp for high for 2-3 hours (to cook the onions), or keep temp on low for 5-6 hours. Depends on when you need it. Turn the temp down to warm awhile before serving. Add the sour cream and stir until blended just before serving. (I learned about the sour cream on this thread. ;) ) Serves about 4.

Thought someone might like to try it. :D

lisajl - Would you please post the hot chicken salad recipe? It sounds good!

I just read through the posts on this thread & didn't see anyone mention this one...

I buy boneless chicken breasts in the 5lb bag when they're cheap. Then I just dump the entire bag into the crock & pour in 1 - 2 cups of water. Don't bother to cut out the cartilage before cooking.) I don't bother with seasoning usually. If I do, I just throw some chicken bouillon into it. I usually cook it on LOW for the whole day & then put the crock right into the refrigerator to get it cool enough to handle. The next day, I pull out the chicken & shred it - either with my hands or two forks. Then I bag it into recipe size & freeze. It makes for really quick dinners later! Also, it's like poaching in that the meat stays very moist.

Beyond the standard roast beef, I also like to make a pork roast with great northern beans. Just stir ketchup, brown sugar & a bit of Worcestershire sauce into the beans & put the roast on top. Cook on HIGH for 6 hours.

I also like to put in a bunch of whole green beans (canned or frozen, defrosted), a couple cans of whole potatoes, 2 cups of water & a ham butt cut into pieces. Cook on High for 6 hours - less if using canned beans. Yum!

I buy the 5 lb bag of boneless, skinless chicken too. I haven't cooked any ahead of time. I need to do that. I do cook my hamburger ahead of time and freeze. Saves a lot of time.

3-Cheese Chicken & Noodles

3 cups chopped cooked chicken
1 1/2 cups cottage cheese
1 10 3/4 ounce condensed cream of chicken soup -- undiluted
1 8 ounce pack wide egg noodles -- cooked and drained
1 cup grated monterey jack cheese
1/2 cup chicken broth
1/2 cup diced celery
1/2 cup diced onion
1/2 cup diced green bell pepper
1/2 cup diced red bell pepper
1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese
1 4 ounce can sliced mushrooms -- drained
2 tablespoons butter -- melted
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme leaves

Combine all ingredients in slow cooker. Stir to coat evenly. Cover and cook
on Low 6 to 10 hours or on High 3 to 4 hours.
Makes 6 servings
NOTE: I didn't mark it down, but I'm sure I didn't put the noodles in when I started this one. I'd read on this board that putting them in the last 20 min or so should do it. I was skeptical, but stirred them in about 1/2 to 3/4 hr before we wanted to eat. They were done, but not soggy. Also, I didn't have regular cottage cheese when I wanted to make this, but I DID have some of that stuff with pineapple & cherries. I was quite surprised when it turned out really good! In fact, the kids now prefer it with that instead of the plain. ;)

Five Flavors Chicken - Crock Pot
3 - 4 lb chicken pieces
2 cloves garlic
1/2 c honey
1 1/2 tsp ginger, ground
1/2 c soy sauce
3 Tbl sherry
1/2 c crushed pineapple with juice (opt)
2 Tbl cornstarch
Mix garlic, honey, ginger, soy & sherry. (Can substitute orange or cranberry juice.) Dip chicken into mixture. Place chicken in crock. Mix pineapple with sauce & pour over chicken. Cook on low for 6 hours. Remove chicken. Blend cornstarch into juice; cook to thicken.
NOTE: Do NOT use chicken with bones! The bones start to dissintegrate so that they can't be pulled out. I always use boneless for this recipe. Also, I use cranberry juice instead of the sherry. I serve it with this rice Pilaf recipe.

Rice Pilaf
3 Tbl butter
1 Tbl garlic, minced
3/4 c rice, converted
2/3 c orzo
2 1/2 c chicken broth
1/2 c slivered almonds
Melt butter on low; add garlic, salt, pepper & nuts. After 1 minute, add rice & orzo; stir until well-coated. Add broth, increase heat & bring to boil. Lower heat, cover & cook 25 minutes.
NOTE: This originally called for a whole stick of butter, which was wonderful, but not too good for you. It's still quite tasty this way. Oh, & originally it was all rice, but we like the orzo.

Ok...Here we go again...I messed up and did not send!!!

Hot Chicken Salad

2 1/2 cups diced cooked chicken
1 cup toasted almonds
2 cups diagonally sliced celery
1/2 cup diced green pepper
3 tablespoons lemon juice
1 cup mayonnaise
3 tablespoons grated onion
1 cup cubed process cheese
1 cup crushed potato chips
1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese
Toasted english muffins

Combine all ingredients in crock pot except for half the process cheese, half the potato chips, half the parmesan cheese, and of course the english muffins.
cover and cook on low for 4-6 hours. Just before serving, sprinkle with remaining cheese's and potato chips. Serve on toasted english muffins.

I don't always make this with chips, good with or without.
I prefer it with almonds, but now that I have a child with nut allergies...don't make it with almonds often.

Also...like the muffins, but prefer to have this on croissants.

here is the recipe for sweet potato custard-it was great!

5 cups chopped peeled sweet potatoes

2 tsp lemon juice

2 tbsp. softened butter

1/4 cup packed brown sugar

1 tsp salt

1/2 tsp papricka

1 egg

1/4 cup light or regular sour cream

In a pot of boiling water ,cook sweet potatoes for 15 to 20 minutes or until tender. Drain and transfer to a blender or food processor ( I hand mashed and it turned out fine). Mas till smooth and add lemon juice. In a bowl combine butter, brown sugar, salt, papricka, egg and sour cream. Beat until smooth. Fold in potato puree, and transfer to lightly greased crockpot. Cover and cook on low fopr 4-6 hours or on high for 2-3 hours until custard is set and slightly browned around the edges.

I made a "Cleaning Out the Pantry" Crockpot chicken yesterday. I wanted to get rid of a bunch of canned goods, so I through it all together - it was really good! I think you can be creative when you crockpot!

Skinless chicken breast
2 cans of artichoke hearts, quartered
1 can sliced mushrooms
1 can cream of celery soup
salt, pepper, thyme
a few shakes of sherry
1/2 cup of chicken broth

I think that was it, but it ended up being a tasty meal!

I know I'll use it!

Also, my cousin just had twins (and she has a child that just turned 1yr. old + an 8 year old). I gave her the site. ;)

Oh my!!!!

Well...guess what I got for Christmas ;) I've never had a crock pot before, and tried my first Beef Stew on Saturday - yes I just threw whatever took my fancy in, but fortunately it was still a big success, LOL.

Anyhow, NOT being a natural cook, but having a dinner that was both easy and tasty I am flush with success and eager for more!!! Naturally I headed here first :) I have printed off the <i>great</i> recipes from this thread and I had something approaching a pink-fit when the first web link of recipes I went to had 5,800, hehehe.

Today I have a bolognase cooking whilst I'm at work (more 'just chuck it all in' cooking  ) - I prepared everything last night, popped it all in the pot and then stuck it in the fridge so this morning all I had to do was pop it in the pot and switch it on :)

I'm so darn enthusiastic about this crock pot I really wish I'd got one years ago now - words like 'best thing' and 'sliced bread' are floating thru my mind :) (I hope you have that phrase in the States otherwise what I just said would have made NO sense, hehehe.)

Thanks for the great thread :)

I cooked drip beef sandwich meet in the crocl this past weekend. I recently bought a copy of the Fix-It and Forget-It cookbook and have been wanting to try some recipes. This weekend I am going to try Just Peachy Ribs! Hope it's good!

Keep those crock-pot recipes coming!!

A good barbeque meal is:

Country style pork ribs (the big, thick, boneless kind)
Garlic powder
Ground black pepper
1-2 bottles of BBQ sauce (cheap/Kraft is okay here, since it cooks down so much - you just need enough to cover however many ribs you have)
Optional: dried onion flakes

Rub the boneless ribs with a little garlic powder and black pepper.
Put just a 'little bit' of water in the bottom of the crockpot. (Just to keep the ribs from sticking to the bottom as they first heat up in the sauce - maybe a 1/4 inch of water.)
Pile in the ribs.
Cover all with BBQ and sprinkle in some dried onion flakes if you like.
Turn it on low and cook it for 8-10 hours.

When you get home and pull those ribs out they will be falling apart tender - with BBQ flavor all the way through. You can serve them in big pieces OR shred them for use on a bun as a sandwich.

YUMMY and easy!

I have put frozen skinless boneless chicken breasts in my crockpot and added a jar of salsa. I let it cook until the chicken fell apart and then we used this to make burritos with. It was delicious. We filled it with the usual stuff. Simple and easy. Right down my alley. Good Luck.

Has anyone ever used aluminum foil in their crockpot to support a pc of meat or for any other reason. On one of the sites (and I can't remember which one) someone talked about how to use foil in the crockpot to help with draining grease as it cook and how to make clean up easier...anyone ever heard of this?

I've always heard to use carrots under the meat to let the fat drain. It add flavor too, and you don't have to worry about aluminum asorbing into your food.

My sister and I make these Enchiladas quite often. Our families love them!

1lb. Hamburger
1cp chopped onion
1/2 cp. green pepper
1-16oz.can kidney beans (rinse and drain)
1-16oz.can black beans (rinse and drain)
1-10oz. can diced tomatoes and chilies (found with enchilada sauce, etc.)
1/3 cp. water
1 tsp.chili powder
1/2 tsp. cumin
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper
2 cps Mexican blend cheese
6 small (6-7 in) flour tortillas

Brown beef, onion, and green pepper in large pan-drain. Add next 8 ingredients. Bring to boil. Reduce heat, cover and simmer 10 min.

Layer meat, cheese (1/4 cp), and tortilla until all is used or crock pot is full.

Cover and cook on low 5-7 hours (until heated through).

Can serve with enchilada sauce. We also like to have Spanish rice as a side dish!

Enjoy!

Thanks to this post, I went and bought a crock pot and have been actually using it. :D It's been working out great. :D :D I'm wondering if you can recommend some more recipes to try. The sticky chicken came out great! I also made corned beef and cabbage, stew, ribs and a couple of others.

I'm a little scared to try the one with 4 cheese chicken, the cottage cheese through me off - does anyone know if these cheeses makes a creamy sauce?

The links posted are a little overwhelming and I'm hoping for a few more recommendations. :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc

My large crock pot recently went kablooie. I was bummed. I bought a piece of pork to make pulled pork with and discovered that it was too big to fit in my other pot. I actually had to cook it in the oven. Finally replaced the large oval crockpot. Now I have to use it.

I have literally the easiest pot roast recipe ever (found it online ages ago, but I don't remember where). Sooooo easy, and sooooo yummy:

Three ingredient pot roast
Empty a packet of dry onion soup mix into bottom of crockpot. Trim excess fat from roast and place roast in crockpot. Spoon a can of jellied (not whole berry) cranberry sauce over the roast.

Cook on low 8-10 hours. Remove roast from crockpot and cover to keep warm. Meanwhile, turn heat on crockpot to high. Stir a bit of flour into some water or milk to dissolve, then pour into sauce in the crockpot to thicken. Stir, then cover and let it heat on high for about 15 minutes to thicken.

Serve with noodles or mashed potatoes. You'll have lots of gravy, and you'll want something besides just the meat to pour the gravy on, it's so good!

(And don't worry, it does not come out tasting like cranberries -- if you didn't know there was cranberry sauce in it, you wouldn't ever guess.)

Precious: I've used foil with baked potatoes in the crock pot. My family doesn't like the potatoes to get mixed with the meat so that's worked well.
As far as cleaning, An hour soak in warm water with detergent is all it takes for my crock pot. Am wondering if a quick spray with Pam wouldn't take care of some of the clean up as well.....I'll have to try that next time.

As far as roast's basting liquid, I buy the cheapest burgundy or merlot wine and use a cup/half of that in the bottom. Or if I'm in a pinch, a can of Dr. Pepper, Pepsi, or generic cola works just as well.
Tasty!!

When I make the spaghetti with meatballs I just do it as I normally would on the stove and it comes out great every time!

I pretty much do the same with Beef stroghanoff.
beef cubes, mushrooms,1 can golden mushroom soup, 1 can crushed tomatoes, 1 can of beef broth french onion style. I let it cook for 8 hrs and the meat is very tender and then at the end I add the sour cream and we eat it over rice or noodles.

For roasts I put the roast in the bottem and then sprinkle the onion soup mix over it poke the meat a few times with the fork, add a can of beef broth or water, potatoes and then cook for 8 hrs. (they also sell these wire racks that you can put in the bottom of your crock pot for roasts and such. http://stores.rivalproducts.com/b2crival/b2c/mainFS.jsp) I discovered this when I had to order a new stoneware crock for my crockpot. I broke mine.

I also do pork roasts, put the roast in the bottom and cover in sauerkraut add a little water and cook for 8 hrs. Very tender roast.

stuffed green pepperes. cut tops off peppers and clean out. fill with meat stuffing of ground meat, rice, egg, onion and garlic. cover in tomato sauce and cook for 8 hrs.

The above recipe with the meat rolled in cabbage leaves is great too!

I have cooked chicken breasts in teriyaki sauce too. They turned out excellent. Very tender. Boneless, skinless breasts, placed in bottom, cover with soy sauce(I use low sodium), honey, onion, 2 tbls brown sugar, water, dash of lemon juice, and cook for 6 hrs.

I have also done swedish meatballs and cocktail meatballs.

Meatloaf, ground meat, pork and veal, egg, bread crumbs, onion, garlic, basil mixed together to form small loaves. place in bottom of crock, cover with tomato soup and 2 tbls brown sugar. cook for 8 hrs. Very simple, yet tasty.

Orange chicken is another one. Boneless, skinless chicken cooked in orange juice. Add some onion and you are done after it cooks for 6 hrs.

Thanks for starting this thread. This is how I cook pork chops so they are very moist.

Pork Chop Dinner

6 to 8 medium carrots (1 pound), coarsely chopped or baby carrots
3 to 4 medium potatoes, cubed
4 boneless pork loin chops (3/4 inch thick)
1 large onion, sliced
1 envelope onion soup mix or beefy mushroom soup mix
2 cans (10 ¾ ounces each) condensed cream of mushroom soup, undiluted

Place carrots and potatoes in a slow cooker. Top with the pork chops, onion, soup mix and soup. Cover and cook on low 6-8 hours or until meat and vegetables are tender. Yield: 4 servings

This is a great thread thank you! I can see that I'm not alone in the crockpot addiction.

Here's my favorite- it is so yummy!!!!

6 pork chops

3 tbsp flour

1 1/2 tsp oregano

1 1/2 tsp salt

1/4 tsp pepper

1/4 tsp garlic powder

2 tbsp veg oil

1 15 1/2 oz. can pineapple chunks in their own juice

1 6 oz. can pineapple juice

1/4cup water

2 tbsp brown sugar

2 tbsp chopped onion

2 tbsp tomato paste

1/4 cup raisins

Mix four, oregano, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Rub on both sides of the chops and brown in the oil on a skillet then transfer to the crockpot.

drain pineapple juice and set aside chunks. In a small bowl mix together 3/4 cup pineapple juice, water, brown sugar, onion, and tomato passte. Pour mixture into slow cooker, sprinkle rasins on top.

cook on high for 3-3 1/2 hours or on low for 6 to 7 hours.

Stir in pineapple chunksinto mixture and cook on high for an additional 10 minutes.

ENJOY!!!!!

If it seems difficult it's not. It is one of the easiest dishes I make. I must admit though that I never measure anything. A dash of this and a sprinkle of that. I t always comes out great.

I usually serve this with rice.

A few of our favorites:

Cola roast

I know it sounds strange, but the acid in the cola breaks down the meat and makes it very tender. Use a very cheap cut and it still tastes very expensive!!

Take any cut of roast beef (I buy cheap and big, but buy whatever size you need), brown it on all sides in a little oil in a pan. Transfer to crockpot, sprinkle a package of onion soup mix over it and then pour a can of cola drink over the top (not diet). Cook on low all day, or high for about 4-5 hours if you need it done quicker, though the lower temperature and longer time makes is SOOOOOOO tender. I take the roast out, and make the BEST gravy with the liquid in the crockpot. Everyone who has ever had it wants more.

Pork Roast sandwiches

Take any pork roast, brown on all sides in a little oil in a pan. Transfer to crockpot THE NIGHT BEFORE. I put it in before I go to bed on low. The next morning, after the roast has been in the crockpot about 12 hours, I take it out, dump the liquid. Let the roast cool down some. Then I shred it all up, put into crockpot and dump in a bottle of honey garlic BBQ sauce and turn on low. My kids BEG for this!!!

Hamburger stew

2 lb of browned ground beef
6-8 potatoes, scrubbed and cut into chunks (not too big)
6-8 carrots, peeled and cut into pieces
2 onions, chopped
frozen or canned veggie of your choice
2 cans tomato soup

Brown ground beef, drain and set aside. Put potatoes in bottom of crockpot, spoon 1/2 can of soup over the top of them and sprinkle with pepper and any other spices you might like. Put carrots in next, and spread 1/2 can of soup over top and any spices you may like. Next, put the onions in and spread 1/2 can of soup over the top along with any spices. Next, put the ground beef in the crockpot, and spread 1/2 can of soup over the top, along with spices. Finally, spread a can of veggies or some frozen veggies on the top. Pour in 1.5-2 soup cans of hot water. Cook on low all day long. Stir about 15 minutes before serving, turn crockpot off and let it sit. This makes a LOT!! Our family of 6 always has leftovers. Tastes even better the next day!!

You're welcome!! :D I just love my crockpot!! I'm trying to get enough recipes so that I can use it almost daily. I just love the feeling when by 9 am I have supper in the crockpot and don't have to worry about it anymore.

Other ideas are spaghetti sauce. I just use a jar of sauce, a large can of stewed tomatoes, some browned ground beef, onions, mushrooms, green peppers, zucchini, and garlic. I actually put this in the crockpot the night before and put it in the fridge. I find the longer it sits, the better the flavors all blend together.

I also will take some chicken pieces (I prefer chicken thighs but have used drumsticks, or breasts), throw them into the crockpot, put some chopped onion, peppers, mushrooms and zucchini on top, pour some spaghetti sauce over top and let it cook on low all day. Then servce it over either rice or noodles. Kind of a chicken cacciatore.

I will also sometimes cook up and freeze meatballs and then throw them in the crockpot, throw some marinara sauce over them and have meatball sandwiches.

First off: I tried the "sticky chicken" seasonings but did it on my trusty Showtime rotiessiere - knockout flavor! Can't wait to try it in the crockpot.

Here's a Slow Cooker Jambalaya I tried this weekend:

1 large onion, chopped (1 cup)
1 medium green bell pepper, chopped (1 cup)
2 medium celery stalks, chopped (1 cup)
3 garlic cloves, minced
1 28 oz. can diced tomatoes, undrained
2 cups chopped fully cooked smoked sausage
1 tablespoon parsley flakes
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme leaves
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1/4 teaspoon red pepper sauce (adjust to your preference)
3/4 lb. uncooked peeled deveined shrimp.
4 cups hot rice (cooked separately)

1. Mix all except shrimp & rice in 3-1/2 to 6 qt. slow cooker.
2. Cover, cook on low 7-8 hours or high 3-4 hours.
3. Stir in shrimp, cover & cook on low for about an hour until shrimp are pink & firm. Serve over rice.

Note: I had some leftover chicken I diced & threw in at the start. Also used frozen cooked shrimp, along with frozen okra during the last hour, and it turned out great.

You all are very, very sweet and these recipes are great!

I heard in some of the first posts someone mentioning curries. I love curries and I love my crockpot as I work full time. I also love to wing it with my crockpot and see how it turns out. I just did this curry last week and it was great:

Place 1 1/2 teaspoons of red curry paste into the bottom of the pot
Pour in two cans of coconut milk
I used some Thai peanut sauce I had laying around and added a a large dolop to the mix
Stir well in the pot to make sure your curry paste is mixed into the milk

Take pork, whatever cut you like best - for me its the ribs cut up into cubes - and place that into the coconut milk mixture.
Then cut up in large chunks of sweet potatoes and add those and some onions to the pot.

This made a great curry and the sweet potatoes are to die for - you can adjust the heat of your curry (the spice not temp) with how much of the paste you add. Sorry this is not a precise recipes but I do like to wing it and I think the crockpot is very forgiving.

Does anyone know whether or not you can just roast vegetables in the crockpot? Would I do it like mentioned above with roasting chicken - just place some oil into the pot, season the vegetables and go? I love squash in the fall but don't have time to cook it when I get home from work and I am trying to find a good way to do this in the crockpot.

RumpleMom

castlegazer- I'm not sure, but I think you would need to add a little water also.

I wanted to say thank you for the crockpot roast recipe. It is the one using beef, dry soup mix and jellied cranberry sauce.

It was fantastic!!!! DD doesn't like roast beef I usually use beef broth, but she actually asked for a second helping this time. I consider it important for teens to eat beef once in a while for the iron and the only beef she would eat was a hamburger.

This will be my crockpot roast recipe forever more. Thanks

I have also put boneless, skinless chicken breasts in the crockpot, 2 cans of cream of mushroom soup (I use the 98% fat free so I noticed I needed 2 cans for 3 good sized chicken breasts), cook on low for 6-8 hours, make some rice or noodles and either blend in with the chicken or put the chicken mixture over on them on your plate.

A great piece of meat (someone asked very early on) is round steak with cream of mushroom soup over it as well. Then make rice to put the steak over - YUM YUM!!!!! The meat is sooooooooo tender and it smells soooooooo good when cooking.

I have wrapped potatos in foil and "baked them in the crock" and my other tip is to put the roasted chicken you get the grocery store in your pot to keep it warm til dinner time. It does continue to cook if you are a morning shopper, but the end result is a moist chicken that falls off the bone

I've been enjoying reading these recipes, so I thought it was time to add one of my own. My DD asked me to fix this for supper tonight, so it must be a winner!

CHICKEN FRICASSEE

3 lbs. cut up chicken pieces
2 t. salt
1 t. paprika
2 medium onions, sliced
1 stalk celery, sliced
3 carrots, peeled and sliced
1 bay leaf
1 c. chicken broth
1/2 c. flour
1/2 c. water

Season chicken with salt and paprika. Place sliced veggies and bay leaf in Crock Pot. Place chicken pieces on top of veggies. Pour in chicken broth. Cover and cook on low 8-12 hours or on high for 4-6 hours. One hour before serving, turn to High. Remove chicken pieces; bone and return meat to crock pot. Make a smooth paste of flour and water and stir into liquid in crock pot. Cover and cook until thickened. Serve over rice or noodles.

I cannot thank everyone enough for this thread!!!

I really don't like to cook...and somehow get away with it since it's just DH & I. Just before Xmas, I bought a new crockpot w/ a removable crock & timer that switches to just "keep warm" if I'm not home from work yet. I had an OLD crockpot with none of those features, & didn't like to use it since I never know what time I'll be home from work.

This thread has been great! Even DH is getting into the crockpot now!!

We've made a chicken stew. beef stew, ribs (the EASIEST in the world -- DH made them - 3 ingredients!!), and today we just started chicken breasts with a jar of salsa. We'll serve it over noodles when done.

Everything has been DELICIOUS!!! And today, DH even said we need to have those ribs again soon. :teeth:

Keep those recipes coming.

Here's a recipe that was rated one of the best of the year in our paper's food section. It's a little rich and certainly not healthy, but delicious. DH likes me to double all ingredients except the chicken so there's more sauce.

Creamy Italian Chicken

2 lbs. boneless, skinless chicken breasts
1/4 cup butter or margarine, melted
4 oz. of and 8 oz. tub of cream cheese and chives
1 (10 3/4 oz.) can golden cream of mushroom soup
1 (0.7 oz.) pkg. Italian dressing mix (this is the dry mix)
1/2 cup water or white wine
Angel hair pasta

Cut chicken breasts into strips and put chicken strips into slow cooker.
In a separate bowl, mix melted butter or margarine, cream cheese soup and Italian dressing mix together.
Pour mixture over chicken strips and add in white wine or water.
Cook on LOW for 6-8 hours.
Serve over cooked angel hair pasta.

Some notes: I season my chicken a little with garlic powder, salt and pepper. I've also put the chicken in frozen and it comes out fine. This recipe will taste good with water in place of the wine, but it's so much better with the wine.
I also cut my chicken into small chunks instead of strips. Sometimes I just do this with a spoon once the chicken has cooked.
We always serve this with garlic bread.

Thanks Chrismiss for the bump. It is almost soup weather--here's my favorite.
Chicken Corn Chowder
4 cups chicken breast, cooked and chopped
2 cups potatoes, peeled and diced
1 onion chopped fine
1 stalk celery, chopped fine
1 can cream corn
1 10oz. frozen corn
4 cups chicken broth-canned is fine
1 can evap. milk-I use non-fat
pepper
1/2 lb. bacon fried crisp, then crumbled
1/2 cup flour mixed with 1 cup milk
mix together the first 9 ingredients in your crockpot. Cook on low for 4 hours or until veggies are tender. Add the bacon, flour mixed with the milk, cook on high until soup thickens--another hour. I serve in bowls with shredded cheese and sliced green onions. Yummy!

I made this tonight after doing a search "Crock pot" yesterday!
My company loved it!
I used 4 pounds of chicken and 1/2 of the package of dry Italian dressing mix and a big dollup of minced garlic....served it with a green salad and garlic bread from the freezer.
YUMMY!

Something I have been making alot in my crock pot is BBQ Beef.

I buy a 3 to 4 pound roast of beef (any kind) and put it into the crock pot, I add 4 or 5 bottles of any kind of BBQ sauce, (I usually get a few regular BBQ bottles and a few of Honey BBQ or with Garlic) enough to cover the roast, and then add one can of beer (again any kind)

Let it cook on Low for 12 hours.
Take out the meat and Pull it apart with a fork.

This is sooo easy and sooo yummy!

I usually buy rolls, slice, butter them and add some garlic powder to them and put them under the broiler to make garlic rolls, and we also sauté mushrooms and onions to put on top of the meat in the sandwich.

I just realized from reading this thread over again that I never posted my Beef Stew Recipe....

INGREDIENTS:
3 pounds beef stew meat
1 (28 ounce) can stewed tomatoes, with juice
1 cup chopped celery
4 carrots, sliced
3 potatoes, cubed
3 onions, chopped
3 1/2 tablespoons tapioca
2 cubes beef bouillon
3/4 cup red wine
2 cups water
1 Package of Frozen Peas
1 Package of Frozen Corn

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DIRECTIONS:

Place beef, tomatoes, celery, carrots, potatoes, onions, tapioca, and bouillon into the Crock, stir in red wine and water.
Cover and cook for 8 hours on Low, then add the Frozen Peas and Corn and cook for another 30 mins.

I add Wondra (or flour) to thicken after it is done cooking.

The original recipe for this called for only 1/4 cup of wine but I added more ;)
You can make your own decision on that one!

Linda, I never made this recipe, but found it in a crock pot cookbook that I have, it sounds good. It says the gravy has a mild wine flavor. Joyce

Turkey Roast Chablis

3/4 c. dry white wine
1/2 c. chopped onion
1 clove garlic, minced
1 bay leaf
1 3 - 3 1/2 lb boneless turkey roast
1 tsp. dried rosemary, crushed
1/4 tsp. pepper
1/3 c. light cream or milk
2 T. cornstarch
1/8 tsp. salt

In crock pot combine wine, onion, garlic, and bay leaf. If turkey is wrapped in netting, remove and discard. If gravy packet is included, remove and refrigerate for another use. Combine rosemary and pepper. Rub roast with rosemary mixture. Place turkey in cooker.

Cover; cook on low-heat setting for 10 - 12 hours or on high for 4 1/2 - 5 1/2 hours. Remove roast and keep warm. For gravy, strain cooking juices; discard solids. Skim fat from juices. Measure 1 1/3 c. juices into a small saucepan. Combine cream or milk, cornstarch, and salt; stir into juices. Cook and stir till thickened and bubbly. Cook and stir 2 minutes more.

Slice turkey roast. Spoon some gravy over roast. Makes 6 - 8 servings.

(Not recommened for 1 quart cooker)

Ok...this isn't even a recipe...I just take a whole chicken and put it in the crockpot with 1-2 cans of flavored diced tomatoes. (whatever flavor you want). I leave it all day when I'm at work on low. When I get home, I shred the chicken and we put it in flour tortillas with lots of shredded cheese and it all melts together and is so warm and yummy! I like it plain like that...my DH likes to add sour cream and sometimes extra salsa (or sauce from the diced tomatoes)

I've done dressing in a oven turkey bag in the crockpot with a pre-cooked turkey breast on top. It was easy to clean up and it was quite good.

I do a whole chicken frequently in my crockpot overnight. I put it on when I go to bed and after the kids leave for school in the morning I can pull it out and pick it off the bones. I don't know why you couldn't do the same with a turkey breast.

Thanks, Twigs. That turkey recipe was great! I'd give it a 7 /10 only because I used a sweetish wine (all I had) instead of the dry it called for - the sauce was smooth and flavorful, and the roast was nice and moist. It was finished in about 6 hours in my crockpot. I will make it again and try a more dry wine.

Hi everyone! I just discovered the CCS... (?!)

I am also a crock pot fanatic...I have quite a long commute, so it's nice to come home to dinner! My tricks to combat dryness in the crock is to make sure the meat is covered in liquid (my crock is on low for about 10-12 hrs.) Usually I just add a can of beef or chicken broth. Also, recipes with wine in them work well too! I'm currently working on a chicken crockpot pot roast stew...

www.allrecipes.com is my favorite source of recipes! If anyone has a good, long-cooking crockpot recipe please send it my way! :)

thanks!

Hello everyone! I am so glad I found this thread. I came over to this board to find some new Christmas cookie recipes, and instead I found the crock pot thread. I have been trying to use my crockpot more just for convenience and not having to "cook" every night. This is a nice easy thing that I do. I put (thawed) boneless, skinless chicken breasts in the crockpot and cover with a can of prepared enchilada sauce and a can of diced green chile peppers. I leave it on all day while at work, and when I come home, I shred the chicken with a fork and serve on tortillas with shredded cheese and refried beans or Spanish rice as a side. It's really delicious. Keep these great recipes coming!!

I use my Crock-Pot at least twice a week, and more often in winter. I actually have dinner cooking now. This is what I'm making:

EASY CHICKEN AND BISCUITS

6 boneless, skinless thighs (or breasts if you prefer)
1 small yellow onion
1 stalk celery, cut-up
1/2 cup water

Dump all these ingredients in the Crock-Pot for 4 hours on low or 8 on high. 30 minutes before it's ready, add a bag of frozen mixed vegetables and a jar of cream country gravy. While that's simmering, bake up a can of Pilsbury refrigerator biscuits. When the biscuits are ready, slice one in half on a plate and cover with chicken, veggies and gravy. It's delicious! Beware, there's rarely ever any leftovers! :flower:

Here's an easy one that's great for parties:

QUICK AND EASY MEATBALLS:

1 bottle of your favorite BBQ sauce
1/2 jar of grape jelly (the secret ingredient)
1 large bag of frozen meatballs

Dump all of these ingredients in the Crock-Pot for about 4 hours on high and everybody will rave about the flavor. Don't tell them your secret before they try it, or they might snub their nose at it (especially kids). The jelly gives the sauce a delicious, sweet flavor. You can also serve this for your family by reducing the amount of meatballs and serving them on a bed of white rice or on sub rolls for a quick, yummy sandwich. :cheer2:

I would think to leave them whole and shred later...

I made this yesterday:
Slow cooked german short ribs (http://recipes.allrecipes.com/Utilities/PrintRecipe.aspx?RecipeID=23564&servings=6&metric=false&Format=Full)

My suggestions for this recipe are to double the sauce, baste out the oil when you're almost ready to serve, and then mix in your flour/water mixture. :)

Made something last night that was kind of a combination and adjustments of some other recipes I've seen.

Broccoli, Potato and Chicken soup

2 cans of Campbell's Broccoli Cheddar Soup
2 cans of water
1 Cup of milk
4 small potatoes washed and cut up (don't need to peel)
1 bag frozen broccoli
3 boneless chicken breast

After it all cooked I pulled the chicken out and diced it before returning it to the soup. I also added a little corn starch to thicken a little.

My boys and Husband loved it and I have to say it was quite good on a cold winters day!!!

pppiglet

Wwe love this chili recipe and I don't even brown the ground beef first. Just dump everything in the crockpot and let sit all day.

2lbs grd beef
2 cups chopped onions
2 cloves garlic, pressed or use minced dry garlic
3 tbls. chili powder
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. paprika
1 tsp. grd oregano
1 tsp. grd cumin
1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper
1 28oz can tomatoes
3 1lb can kidney beans

cook on low 8-10 hours or high 5 hours.
We top with cheddar cheese or my son likes to crumple cornbread in it.

cryssi
12-13-2005, 06:50 PM
Do you mix it up, though, to break up the ground beef, or do you crumble the beef as you put it in? thanks!

pppiglet
12-13-2005, 06:56 PM
I kinda crumble the beef up as I put it in and then when all the ingredients are in I stir it up a bit to evenly distribute everything. To make things even faster I will measure the dry ingredients and put them in a baggie on the counter the night before and then I can just dump it in fast in the morning before I go to work, and chop the onions and garlic and leave in the fridge over night and dump in also.

3-4 lbs. Roast
1 jar Heinz Beef (brown) Gravy
1/2 Onion (cut-up)
1/2 cup water

Place all ingredients in crock-pot and cook on low for 8 hours. Gravy will thin while cooking. This makes a delicious, melt-in-your-mouth roast. Serve with mashed potatoes, corn and rolls. :earboy2:

This makes a Taco Bell like meat/bean spread that's great on tostada shells or in burritos.

1 pound ground beef (or turkey), browned in pan
2 cans of refried beans
1 envelope Taco seasoning
1/2 cup water

Dump all ingredients in crock-pot and cook on low 2-3 hours. Makes meat very fine and tender and much easier to spread. Serve on tostada shells or in flour tortillas with cheese, sour cream, & tomatoes.

I also save the leftover meat mixture for another day and put it in a casserole dish with crumbled up tortilla chips and topped with cheese, then bake in oven till cheese it melted. A great way to stretch your dollar! :cheer2:

Has anyone else tried these? http://www.reynoldskitchens.com/reynoldskitchens/kitchenconnection/products/slow_cooker/index.asp

They run $2.29 for a box of four. Clean up is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO easy! I think they are just re-shaped/re-sized oven bags. They are oval, but I use them in my 4 and 5 qt rounds. I love love LOVE them! Pull removable crock out, serve dinner, and by the time you are done, the crock is cool enough to put away any leftovers and throw the bag away! Wipe out with a cloth to take care of any moisture and TA-DA! :wizard: You are done!

Here's my addition to the recipe list:

Creamy Mushroom Chicken

1 lb boneless skinless chicken breasts
1 pkg dry chicken gravy mix
1 can mushroom pieces or 1 container fresh (I buy sliced, but your choice)
10.75 oz can cream of mushroom soup (I use Healthy Request for low sodium and fat)
1 c white wine (dry is better than sweet)
8 oz pkg cream cheese, softened (I use fat free since it's mixed in and you can't tell)

*Place chicken in bottom of slow cooker. Sprinkle gravy mix and mushrooms on top. In separate bowl, combine soup & wine, then pour over chicken.
* Cover and cook on Low 8 hours.
* About 30 minutes before serving, remove chicken, cut up and keep warm. Stir in cream cheese, whisk until smooth, then return chicken to crock pot.
* Serve over noodles or rice.

YUM! There is plenty of sauce to add another pound or so of chicken and still have sauce left over. It's my family's favorite.

Thanks for all the great recipes, everyone!

I would love to start using my crockpot.
I have a couple of newbie questions.
Is it safe to leave the crockpot all day long w/o anyone home?
Also does the meat have to be defrosted when you put it in if you are cooking it on low for 8 hours?

pppiglet
01-05-2006, 07:00 PM
Yes meat should be defrosted first. I put roasts or whole chickens in them at 7am and sometimes leave them in til 7pm and they are fine with no one home! (on low only)
The only thing I put in there frozen was meatballs and it took 3hrs on high. I was home for the day to check on them. Since we all eat at different times, it's always hot for each of us!

I take a deer roast (or beef if you don't like / don't have deer) and put it in the crockpot and pour in a whole bottle of my favorite BBQ sauce. I put it on low and go to work. By the time I get home, the roast just shreds apart. Stir it all up and serve it on buns. Best BBQ sanwich I have ever had!

I leave my crockpot on low all day for 10-12 hrs. That might be a little long, as sometimes the meat will be a tad dry.

I recommend defrosting and browning your meat, but if you don't have time or don't want to, you can put in frozen meat. I've put in a frozen chuck roast and frozen chicken with no problems at all. But like I said, if you brown it, it will taste better... :)

good luck in your crockpot endeavors! :)

I have a Rival crockpot (the stoneware kind, not metal cooking pot) and I put frozen roasts in all the time. In fact I've rarely put it in defrosted & have never browned the meat first. The directions recommend adding a cup of cold water/liquid to the crock if your meat is frozen.

I don't add anything but sauce when using frozen meatballs.

I probably got this from this board years ago- a great recipe that makes your home smell wonderful! Like it says, it looks like a cake but when you scoop some out there is pudding underneath so it it wonderful with vanilla ice cream (to cut the sweet ;) ).

Upside Down Chocolate Pudding Cake~ very very good!
1 cup Bisquick
1 cup sugar
1/3 c. and 3 tbsp. unsweetened cocoa
1/2 cup milk
1 tsp. vanilla
1-2/3 c. hot tap water

Mix Bisquick, 1/2 cp sugar, 3 tbsp. cocoa, milk and vanilla. Spoon batter evenly into lightly greased crockpot. Mix remaining sugar, cocoa, and hot tap water. Pour over the batter that is already in the crockpot. Cook on high 2-1/2 hours or until batter no longer looks shiny on top. **NOTE: This literally ends up looking like a cake from the top, but surprise! When you slice (scoop) the cake, there is a layer of pudding underneath it. When finished, it looks nothing like what you put in the crockpot in the first place. This is a very rich dessert, so eat a small portion!

I love this! My favorite crockpot recipe is:

Crazy Chicken

3-4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into strips
1/2 bottle of catalina dressing
2 packages of dry onion soup mix
1 small jar of peach preserves.

Put chicken into crock pot. Mix remaining ingredients. Pour over chicken. Cook on high 4 hours or on low 6-8 hours. I serve this over rice.

I bought myself a crock pot this past Christmas and I love the liners for easy clean up. I used the pot to cook quick lasagna today. I got the recipe from Fix-It and Forget It Lightly. It is good.

Steak and Spinach roll ups

Round Steak
italian dressing
1 pkg frozen spinach
1 - 14 oz can of sliced stewed tomatoes (the ones I buy have onions and garlic cooked in them)
1/2 cup fresh grated parmasean cheese
3 garlic cloves
1/2 tsp black pepper

Take round steak and cut into strips about 10 inches long. You can have them as wide as you would like. I usually do mine about 4 x 10.

In a bowl mix the frozen spinach (drained and squeezed dry) and the tomatoes (drained) with 1/2 cup of parmasean cheese, 3 minced garlic cloves and 1/2 tsp black pepper.

Take the steak strips and brush with italian dressing. Spoon spinach/cheese mixture onto the steak and spread out evenly over othe top. Roll steak up and tie off to keep together.

Place in the bottom of crockpot on low (you can stack on top of each other if you have a smaller crockpot). I usually cook on low for 5-6 hours.

My 5 year old Son who I could never get to eat spinach before loves this dinner!

Yummy! Thank you for sharing this...I made it last week, and it was very good! I had to make a few modifications to cook it for 10+ hrs...I didn't have catalina so I used Ken's Honey French dressing, 1 pk. golden onion soup mix and 1 pk. reg. onion soup mix, and 1/3 large jar peach preserves...I also added 1/2 can chicken broth and 1/4 c. white wine b/c I used frozen breasts with bone and skin. Basted out the oil before serving so we could pour the very tasty sauce over the chicken. It wasn't dry! It actually tasted even better a few days later reheated b/c I had stored it in the sauce. Would probably make good sandwiches...

Thank you for an amazing recipe! I will add this to my crockpot chicken recipe file... :)

welcome! :) What I do if I have to brown meat or do a lot of prep is do it the night before and then put it in the fridge. In the morning, take the stoneware out of the fridge, pop it in the base, turn it on low, and go to work!

Hi, everyone. These recipes are really great, and I have been using my crock pot much more now. I have a question about rib tips. For some reason, DH asked for rib tips, but I have no idea how to prepare them. Can you just put them in the crock pot with some barbeque sauce? Anybody have some hints for me?

I made the easiest chicken recipe last night. Ok, so it's not as easy as throwing chicken in the crock and pouring a bottle of BBQ sauce over, but nearly so.

Super Easy Crock Pot Chicken for 2

2 chicken breasts (with bone and skin)
1/2 bottle Ken's fat free Italian dressing
1/2 c. white wine

put chicken in crock pot
pour dressing over top and flip chicken to coat
pour wine over top

cook on LOW for 10-12 hrs

serve with lots of the sauce over top

rice or bread will go great!

let me know what you think!

Just came across th post for Crazy Chicken...I've been making this for years, we call it Russian Chicken b/c originally we made it w/ Russian dressing. To lighten it up, I use Kraft's Light Done Right Catalina, 1 pkg. Lipton Onion Soup Mix and 1/2 jar apricot preserves. I cut up the chicken into cubes and bake it in the oven for about 45 min. and serve over rice.

I'll have to try it in the crock pot.

1-2 cans, or enough to cover (or almost cover) the chicken, depending on how long you cook it. If you're not cooking it on LOW for 10 hrs, then 1 can might be ok if you are going to want a thicker, less soupy stew. If you are cooking it for 10-12 hrs, I would use 2 cans (or cover the chicken), add 1/4 to 1/2 c. white wine (to retain moisture - but I use breasts, thighs won't get dry, so you might not need it), and thicken the stew later with a flour/water slurry.

I hope this helps. This is the recipe I use and modify:

http://chicken.allrecipes.com/az/SlwCkrChicknStw.asp

although I have made it without the cream of celery soup (don't think you need it)

HTH! :)

wow that sounds interesting. here's what I made yesterday:

bbq beef (adapted from a recipe given to me by a friend)

1 chuck roast (I also threw it in the crock frozen)
1 c. bbq sauce (any kind - I ended up using 3 kinds to use them up)
1/2 c. jam (again, any kind - calls for strawberry, but I used homemade persimmon!)
2 T. mustard
1 onion, sliced

method to my madness:

spray crock with Pam
put onions on the bottom
put roast on onions
mix all other ingredients together and pour over top

cook on LOW forever (aka 10-12 hrs)

shred and serve on rolls!

yum! I might add 1/4 c. of red or white wine next time...

From the book: Busy People's Slow Cooker Cookbook by Dawn Hall
Hot Fudge Spoon Cake

3 cups skim milk
1 ( 5-ounce) box chocolate cook and serve pudding
1 (18.25-ounce) Betty Crocker's Super moist Chocolate cake mix, dry
1 1/3 cup water
1/2 cup applesauce
6 egg whites

Spray a slowcooker with nonfat cooking spray
With a whisk mix the milk with the pudding in the cooker until disolved.
In a medium sized bowl with a whisk mix the dry cake mix, water, applesauce, and egg whites together for 2 minutes or until well blended.
Gently pour the cake batter into the middle of the not cooked pudding mixture in the slow cooker.
Cover and cook on high for 2 1/2 hours.
Serve hot with a fat free ice cream. Do not invert this dessert. Spoon the servings from the slow cooker.

Note: If desired after 2 1/2 hours of cooking, unplug the slow cooker. The dessert will stay warm and delicious for hours. It travels well to potlucks or social gatherings.
Note: The cake will firm as if it were baked, yet the pudding will still be thick and creamy. When serving make sure you reach to the bottom of the slow cooker to get the creamy pudding with each serving of cake.

layer 4 large chicken breast on bottom-can be frozen. Cover with slices of cheese-we like provelone, I have used good old American in a pinch. Cover this with can of either cream of mushroom or cream of chicken..dump a box of stove top-I use chicken or turkey flavor, melt 1/4 cup butter and drizzle over stuffing mix. Here is one I like to do for an appetizer:

1-2 pkgs. Lil Smokies
1 pkg. bacon (cut strips in half)
1/2 C brown sugar

~Spray crock with Pam.
~Wrap each sausage in a half slice of bacon and secure with a toothpick.
~Sprinkle the brown sugar over the sausages and cook on low for about 6-8 hours.
~Check after 6 hours to see how the bacon is coming along.

Tomorrow I am placing a whole turkey breast skin side down and pouring a can of low sodium chicken broth over it. It comes out so moist. My kids hate turkey but they honestly love this. When storing it make sure that you pour the juices over the turkey to keep it moist. Helps to have it to reheat it as well.

Just contributing since I got so many from ya'll!

Crockpot Ham with Cheesy Potatoes
1 Bag (28 oz) of frozen diced potatoes with onions & peppers (thawed)
2 cups shreaded cheddar & monterey jack cheese blend (8 oz)
1 can (10-3/4 oz) condensed cream of celery soup
1 container (8 oz) sour cream
3-pound fully cooked smoked boneless ham

1. Spray 5- to 6- qt slow cooker w/cooking spray. Mix frozen potatos, cheese, soup and sour cream in cooker. Cut ham lengthwise in half, place ham on potato mixture.

2. Cover and cook on low heat setting 5 to 6 hours or until potatoes are tender.

3. Remove ham from cooker; place on cutting board. Gently stir potatoes well before serving. Cut ham into slices, serve w/potatoes.

SALSA CHICKEN

4-5 frozen boneless/skinless chicken breasts
1 jar of salsa
1 can of black beans, drained
1 small can of corn
1 block of cream cheese

Place frozen (YES frozen) chicken breasts in crock pot and cover with salsa, black beans and corn (I also added a small can of olives). Cover and cook on high 4-5 hours, or low 8-10. At the last half hour, place block of cream cheese in. Stir and serve!

For those of you who cook your meat ahead of time and freeze it, what do you freeze it in? Freezer bags or containers? What brand do you find does the best so it doesnt get freezer burned? I have a new freezer but it tends to even get ice crystals on things that are not even opened.

HAven't had a chance to go through all the pages but wanted to share my two favorite recipes.

New England Pot Roast

(sorry do not use measurements)
carrots
potatoes
onions
salt and pepper
pot roast (brown in skillet first)
horseradish
water or beef broth

mix first 4 ingredients, place roast on top, pour about 1 cup water or broth put about 1/2 a jar of horseradish on roast. cook 8-10 hours

The horseradish mellows way out and this is great.... thicken remaining liquid to gravy or not your choice.

Swwet Potatoes

cubed sweet potatoes
applesauce to coat
cinnimon (spelled wrong)
brown sugar
and butter to taste

cooks on high in about 3 1/2 hours low 6-7

oh and if I have them I add pecans or walnuts too

Ooooh, this thread made me hungry! I'll definitely be trying a few of the recipes- especially the chicken with salsa (I love the recent post with the addition of black beans and cream cheese!). Here's my favorite- Pepperoncini Beef. It's awesome if you like your food a bit spicy!

1 3 lb. beef roast (whatever you have, something cheap is perfect)
1 (12-16 oz.) jar of Pepperoncini peppers
1 envelope dry Italian dressing mix
A few cloves of garlic, peeled and chopped into a few pieces each. The more the merrier, as far as I'm concerned.

Put roast in crockpot and rub the dry Italian dressing mix all over it, all sides. Cut holes in it with a sharp knife and insert the slivers of garlic into the holes. Pour the whole jar of peppers in, including the liquid ^_^ I think you're supposed to cut the stems off first, but I'm too lazy to do that so I leave them on and it's fine. Cook on low for 10 hours or so, high for 5 to 6 hours if you need it faster. Take a fork and shred the beef up! Pile it onto rolls with melted cheese (we like provolone, but anything would work). MMMM!

Does anyone know the minimum amount of time this needs to cook on high? I put this on earlier today, but didn't notice my crock pot wasn't plugged up until 1:45. :rolleyes1 The chicken was still frozen, so I'm not worried about it not being safe. I pretty much never put milk and cheese in my crock...just because my recipes don't call for it, or I don't have any cream of mushroom soup in my pantry...

Ok, here's my experiment from the other day:

country style boneless pork ribs (really you could use any kind of pork, that's just what I had)
1 bottle beer (I used Pyramid Hefeweiszen)
1 orange, quartered
1 large red onion
1 envelope dry onion soup mix
black pepper

spray the crock with Pam or use a liner
slice the onion and spread on the bottom of the crock
place ribs on top
sprinkle dry soup mix on ribs
pour beer around meat (not on top or the soup mix will wash off)
squeeze oranges over all, and put them around the meat
sprinkle black pepper to your liking on top

cook on LOW for 11 hrs. using a turkey baster, skim off the excess fat. make a flour/water slurry and thicken the juice. cook for 30 more min on high.

Serve with rice/bread/whatever...tastes best if you put barbecue sauce on top!

Combine meat and gravy in crockpot. Cook 6-8 hours on low. Cook noodles and drain. Add sour cream to gravy/meat mixture in crockpot; stir to combine and break the meat apart. Serve over noodles.

You can also add mushrooms, fresh or canned.

Okay - enough lurking...here I go:

White Chicken Chili

1 package of Tyson Southwest Seasoned chicken strips - dethawed and coarsely chopped
1 large jar Randalls White beans (or 2 cans great northern beans)
1 jar mild salsa
1 1lb. block of good monteray jack cheese (cheap brands don't melt well) - cut into cubes for easy melting
2 cans chicken broth

Combine all in a crock pot and cook 4 -6 hours on low. I make this when I know I will be at home because you need to stir it up every so often to melt the cheese. This tastes just like Ruby Tuesday's White chicken chili..... :thumbsup2

For those of you who cook your meat ahead of time and freeze it, what do you freeze it in? Freezer bags or containers? What brand do you find does the best so it doesnt get freezer burned? I have a new freezer but it tends to even get ice crystals on things that are not even opened.

I missed this question when you first posted it. Just in case you never got an answer somewhere else....

I do this with both ground beef & chicken all the time. I just use either the store brand or Zip-Loc bags. Heck, I even use Wal-Marts store brand on-freezer bags! LOL It's better to use the freezer bags I guess, but even the regular ones work. If it's going to sit in the freezer for more than a couple months, I'll put the smaller bags in a gallon bag to help.

I squeeze out all the excess air that I can and I don't get ice crystals if I use the meat in under 3 or 4 months. If you're getting ice on things that haven't been stored, first check your seal. Close the lid/door with a sheet of paper in it & pull it out. There should be at least some drag. Do it along the entire sealing strip. If there is a spot where you have less drag, you may not have a good seal & that's why you're getting the ice crystals.

Another thing, since this is a new freezer - has anyone told you that you're not supposed to leave the freezer largely empty? They don't run correctly/efficiently when they're not full. Putting some empty cardboard boxes in the empty space should help. If you can't find boxes the right size, lightly squishing brown paper grocery bags will do the same thing.

I hope you've been enjoying that freezer! :teeth:

tarheelmjfan - We don't often do dessert here, but thoroughly enjoy the Pumpkin Job recipe someone posted here...especially at this time of year! It's great with vanilla ice cream! :teeth:

I tried this recipe the other night and the family really liked it.

Crockpot Pepper Steak

2 lbs. beef round steak sliced thin (note* Fresh raw beef that has not been frozen is easily cut after it's left in the freezer for a few minutes to firm up.)

1 large green pepper, sliced thin

1 large red bell pepper, sliced thin

1 medium onion, sliced

1 cup beef broth

2 tbsp. soy sauce

1/2 tsp. ground ginger

1 1/2 tsp. minced garlic

1 tsp. Worcetershire sauce

In a skillet, cook beef until just browned. Place onion and peppers in bottom of slow cooker; top with beef. Combine remaining ingredients and pour over top. Cover and cook on low heat for 8 hours or high heat for 4 - 5 hours. Serve over rice.

Swiss Steak

I use one package of round steak - any thin cut of meat will do approx 1 pound

mix flour, pepper, onion powder, & garlic coat the pieces of steak and fry in olive oil till browned. I do this the night before and cut all my veggies.
pop it all in crock pot in the morning.

I put in 3 carrots cut in chunks.
2 celery stalks cut in chunks.
2 medium onions sliced thin.
2 green peppers chunked.
1 -28oz can crushed tomatoes. I doctor the crushed tomatoes with a touch of milk and sugar. 1/2 sauce on bottom of crock pot. all veggies added then rest of crushed tomatoes. put the meat on top of that. Then one can of diced tomatoes on top. I add more spices (we like spices) salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder. Cook on low for 8 hrs. Meat just falls apart.
You can cook rice or egg noodles to put this over. I have tried cooking the noodles in the crockpot 30 minutes before its done. My family doesn't like the sauce getting thick and soaked up by the noodles so I have to do mine separate.

Super Easy Ham BBQ's (doesn't sound good, but it is)

3 to 4 lbs chipped ham (yes, I'm from Pittsburgh :thumbsup2 )

Equal parts of ketchup (yes, it's definitely Heinz :thumbsup2 ) and cola of your choice... I use enough of both to coat the ham well.

Few tablespoons of minced dried onions

Cook on high for a few hours or on low for a little longer.

Serve on your favorite sandwich bun.

I just have to tell you that my extended family is from the Pittsburgh area and I'm stranded in CA. Whenever I visit I HAVE to have chipped ham. Deli's out here think I'm nuts but they just can't slice it right and everyone is so stinking health conscious that I don't the the right flavor or texture. We went to my cousins wedding in June and I bought 3 lbs and froze it in 1/4 lb blocks, carried it on the plane and am now enjoying it!
CHIPPED HAM RULES!

Does anyone have a crock pot recipe for chicken pot pie? I already had my DH pick up refrigerated biscuits. (I had minor surgery this week & need to do everything the easist way possible.) I mostly need to know the best way to prepare it for the biscuits to end up browned & a bit crunchy on top. TIA :)

PS: Sorry, if this has been discussed. I don't remember seeing this recipe on here though.

Just thought I'd chime in here to say I've tried 2 of the recipes listed here. Both from early posts in this thread. The beef stew with mushroom soup , sour cream and wide noodles was AWESOME . I did add a can of beef gravy to the soup and beef. That recipe was from disneyfan551. The 2nd recipe was for the pork roast with BBQ sauce, not sure who it was from right now, but I know she said her kids beg her for it. It was AMAZING. I can't wait for hubby to try it when he gets home. Thanks all.

Hi - I work in the Kraft Kitchens and this recipe is one I make in my slow cooker - it is really easy.

Don't you love the slow cooker - coming home to dinner all ready after work or play? And I love that Tip that was posted, about adding water and deterg. to the dirty slow cooker and putting on low for a while for easy clean-up. I will definitely try that next time.

Has anyone tried those "slow cooker liner bags" that are available now (with the plastic wrap and foil) - I think those are a great idea.

Here is my slow cooker meatball recipe, Enjoy :)

Slow Cooker Saucy Meatballs

Prep: 10 min.
Total: 8 hours 25 min.

1 pkg. (6 oz.) Stove Top Stuffing Mix for Turkey
1-1/2l b. lean ground beef
1 egg, lightly beaten
1/2 cup water
2 cups sliced mushrooms
2 medium green peppers, sliced (about 2 cups)
4 cups spaghetti sauce
1 pkg. (1 lb.) spaghetti
1/3 cup Kraft 100% Grated Parmesan Cheese
COMBINE stuffing mix, meat, egg and water. Shape into 1-inch balls. Place in slow cooker; top with mushrooms, peppers and spaghetti sauce. Cover with lid.
COOK on LOW for 6 to 8 hours (or on for HIGH 3 to 4 hours).
COOK spaghetti as directed on package; drain. Serve meatballs with sauce over spaghetti. Sprinkle with cheese.
Makes 8 servings.

Serving Suggestion:
Serve with a mixed green salad tossed with your favorite Kraft Light Done Right! Reduced Fat Dressing.

Cooking Know-How:
Every time you lift the lid of your slow cooker, precious heat is lost. So, keep the lid on and resist the urge to peek!

Make it Easy:
Make your slow cooker preparation even faster. Prepare the meatballs and cut-up vegetables the night before. Cover and refrigerate until ready to add to the slow cooker. Top with the spaghetti sauce and continue as directed.

I just bought a Rival crockpot, metal on the outside... Is the stoneware kind better? I got the metal one because it has more features... Help!:confused3

Sorry - that wasn't clear. Only the interior cooking "pot" is stoneware. It sits in a metal heating unit. Mine is like yours, just doesn't have as many features. :( DH bought it for me for Christmas last year and didn't think I needed the "programmable" feature.

What do most men know about cooking? ;) Mine had to cook for a week to 10 days while I was in the hospital years ago....I came home and found that the new 10 lb bag of potatoes I'd just gotten was gone. He literally ate baked potatoes - and only baked potatoes every single day! :lmao: :lmao:

My DH thought that the crockpot was a deep fryer! When I brought it home he said, "That's a really big french fry maker!" Poor thing:sad2:

Hi Deb! :wave2:

I have a friend who has the programmable one and she hates it. It doesn't allow you to just simmer something all day. You have to set the time and it cooks it on high for a portion of the time and then puts it down to low automatically. If you are making a pork roast or something that needs to simmer a long time at a really low temp, there is no way to do it in that crock pot. She has burned more stuff in hers because it cooked it too fast.

Give me my good ol' HIGH/LOW setting any day!

Hmm...I'm glad to hear that! Not that I was sitting here wishing I had a programmable one, but I really would have considered it if this one needed replacing. And honestly, I much prefer most of my things to be cooked on low all day...or all night. ;) I often will buy boneless chicken breasts in bulk and throw them in the crock overnight. Then I have all day to cool them so I can shred them and get them in the freezer for later. When I do them during the day I find it difficult sometimes to finish everything before bedtime...just because I get busy with something else. ;)
