I'm a new grandma to my daughter's St. Bernard puppy. For her anniversary she asked for a dog bed.

any ideas of how big, what kind, and where to get one? What quality? Cedar shavings or not.

Doc Rafki?????

Thanks very much.

Hi Barbara!
Check out www.Drsfostersmith.com --a great website for pet products. They have tons of beds from which to choose, and also a Breed Guide with recommendations on bed sizes for particular breeds (although your grandpuppy will be doing A LOT of growing)! They also tell you how to get the correct bed measurements for your specific dog. Even if you don't buy from there, it's a great site which can give you some good pictures and ideas of what you may want to look for!

We've tried lots for our dog. The cedar shavings are great if you can remove the cover to wash it. I don't recommend the sheepskin stuff because I found our dog just chewed at it until she tore her bed open and could pull the stuffing out. This is the same thing she did with sheepskin toys... Happy shopping!

Then again, I'm sure by the time the puppy grows up, he'd appreciate having a nice twin bed all to himself :p !

I think I remember hearing something about cedar chips not being good for dogs, and there don't seem to be many beds made with them any more. If you want to get some good answers to your dog questions, go to www.greatpets.com . There are vets, professional trainers, and just plain pet owners who can give you all sorts of good advice about your new grandbaby.

Ovis has some great beds.
LL Bean also has some good ones, especially in large puppy size. They are a bit pricey but they are comfy. DH lays on ours with the beagles and watches tv:D

I don't know anything about dog beds other than the fact that they are expensive! You could seriously get a used mattress cheaper than a lot of those things. I just got my dogs some egg crates. If I were the domestic type, I'd sew a cover for them. But, they just sleep on my bed anyway.
