Or, as some would like to call it, the introduction.

There’s not much like getting ready to leave on your Walt Disney World vacation. You’ve done the planning…or lack thereof. You’ve done the packing. You’ve made your lists and checked them two, three times.

Especially when you’re traveling with a baby.

Hi, I’m TarzansKat. :wave2: For those of you who don’t know me yet, some call me TK or just Kat. I love my family, I love Disney, and I love bringing the two together. I’m obsessed with Captain Jack Sparrow, and that’s putting it mildly. I’ve made some incredible friends here on the DIS, many of whom have been instrumental in helping me after the untimely passing of my mother last year.

This trip was my first trip without her. I’d be remiss if I didn’t talk a little bit about how it all got started. My mother is the woman who gave me Disney. And it started…in the womb! My very first trip to Disney World was while my mother was pregnant with me. I made it my own personal mission to go to the World while I was pregnant with my children as well. Get ‘em started right, I say. Plus, is there anything better than Disney food while you’re pregnant? :::sigh:::

I digress.

This was my first trip without my mother. It was good, and it was hard. It was everything I expected, some things I didn’t, and most of all, it was a blessing.

Not only were we going without Mom, but we were taking Squirt for the first time. Squirt is our ten month old baby, and I was so excited for his first Disney trip, even if it was a little bittersweet. We have a six year old son, Nemo. The other players on this trip were my husband, MJS (My Jack Sparrow), and Nana.

Nana is my mother’s mom. So it was really something pretty special to be on this trip with her.

There was a lot of emotion leading up to this trip, and sometimes, emotions ran pretty high on vacation. We had some less than stellar moments, I’m not ashamed to admit. At times, I felt like we were “those people.”

But there were times that were amazing. Times that were magical, and times that I looked at my children or my husband or my grandmother and felt so blessed. And, true to form, you’ll find that some of my best memories from this trip had nothing to do with theme park attractions, but unplanned moments.

And really, it’s those moments of complete spontaneity that are the best kind.

Also known as, my mother, my favorite angel, totally has my back. :littleangel:

This trip was really the ultimate combination of these two guys.

http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll289/tarzanskat/wp3_sarge_ts3_1600x1200-1.jpghttp://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll289/tarzanskat/5631788930_21becc0b9c_o-1-2-1.jpg

I’ll leave it up to you to decide who we were channeling at any given moment.

I think the important thing about this particular trip was that I had a plan in my head. And pretty much before the trip, I said, I don’t really care what the plan is, let’s just do what we want. I think we had a pretty good combination of doing what we want and sort of sticking to the plan.

But also muddling it up when necessary. As I am wont to quote, they're more guidelines than actual rules.

So to begin with the beginning, the morning of our trip. We were packed. We were ready. We were neat and pretty and ready to get on with the show. Nemo was so excited. One of the great things about the age he’s at is that they really get Disney World, and they have their own ideas about what they want to do.

Remember that.

It’s really important later.

Anyway, we were ready to get off and running!

http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll289/tarzanskat/DSCI0013-1.jpg

The flight was good! All members of our family were strapped tightly into their seats.

http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll289/tarzanskat/DSCI0016.jpg

I do have to say, we had a bit of turbulence, and when we landed, I had a rip roaring headache. Honestly, I still consider it a good flight. It wasn’t that bad, and the baby slept the whole time! Score one for TK.

I had some lovely conversation with Nana during the flight, and we talked about what we’d like to do.

The beginning of the trip is always the best part. That first day is always so full of anticipation, the idea that anything could happen, the whole vacation and World is laid at your feet. It’s wonderful. If I could bottle that kind of euphoria, I’d be a rich woman.

So, we arrived, got our luggage, met up with our favorite driver, and headed to the hotel.

Ah.

Caribbean Beach Resort.

Now, let me tell you, I’d made some pretty specific room requests. One was an absolute must, and that was first floor. Nana has trouble sometimes with her hip, and stairs every day and night were just not an option. Although we were in separate rooms, our reservations were linked together, so I was hoping that we’d be able to get first floor rooms.

Sometimes though, when I make a room request, I feel like I’m playing Clue.

Colonel Mustard, in the library, with the candlestick!

First floor, pack and play, in Jamaica or Aruba, please!

So that was what I’d requested, and before we got there, I’d pretty much made peace with the fact that it probably wouldn’t happen, and was even open to the adventure and possibility of staying in a different village. I’d stayed in Jamaica before with Tink(erbellarella) and had a really wonderful time.

Nana and I got to our check in CM’s who were absolutely delightful. I can’t even tell you anything in particular that they said, or that my CM said, but she made me feel so totally welcome, and quite frankly, I was so excited to be there, that I’m sure my enthusiasm helped. Her attitude was wonderful as she got me my room assignment, and when she showed me that we were on the first floor, in Jamaica, well, I did one of these…

:dancer:

And I didn’t even keep it all inside! I thanked her profusely, and we get ready to head to our room.

Our driver lead us right over to Jamaica so that it would be easier to unpack our luggage, and we then began the great room search.

Just because I’d stayed there before doesn’t mean I remember how the villages are laid out. :lmao: Theme parks, yes, CBR, not so much.

Now, I want to set the scene for you here.

Keep in mind, I’m already excited to be in Jamaica. I’m so excited to be in Walt Disney World. To be breathing that Florida air, to know that my family is finally on vacation.

And when I figure out where our rooms are, and turn around, I see this…

http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll289/tarzanskat/DSCI0017.jpg

Now that’s what I call a room with a view.

And I’ll admit, I choked up. Because when we got every single thing that we requested, and it came with the gorgeous view of the beach, looking towards Old Port Royale, I knew. I knew my biggest fan, my best angel, my most wonderful mother, was with me. I knew she had my back. And I felt it so strongly, so intensely, that it took me aback. It had been a long time since I’d felt that kind of a feeling.

We may be separated by heaven and earth, but that woman still knows when I need her, and she was there.

In spades.

With this happy thought in my mind, my family and I got ready to head to the Magic Kingdom.

I think everyone should try it once. Although I wouldn't stay there every time I go, I feel it's a wonderfully relaxing resort. I love the theming, of course, it's so pirate-y but also tropical, and again, relaxing. I just felt at ease there, it was beautiful.

He was well over 20 pounds by eight or nine months and we had to switch car seats well before a year!

The view was awesome.

And thank you. It was too funny, when I put the circle over Nemo's face, he wanted to know why I was blacking it out and I explained that I don't post pictures of him all over the internet, and I was going to turn him into Mickey. The Mickey transformation went over very well. ;)

My little guy will be 11 months at the end of this month too! (the 28th) He probably could have stayed in his Mickey car seat for a little while longer, but we moved overseas, so I brought the convertible with me on the plane instead. He was pushing the limits on the carrier anyways, and I didn't want to deal with trying to find a different car seat after I got here.

Actually, the default settings for this board subscribe you automatically to any thread you post in, which is why so many people post nothing but "subscribing/subbing." I disabled it and use the "thread tools" button for any thread I actually want to watch. Though it can be frustrating sometimes if I forget and want to find a thread again.

That title sounds so inappropriate, but I’m totally leaving it as is.

Pirate. pirate:

Anyway, the meaning behind the tee hee is that when talking about the trip I’d entertained the notion of us having an easy evening, perhaps staying at the hotel, or maybe even heading over to Epcot. Or perhaps making a reservation in the Magic Kingdom for dinner, any of those things would have been fine.

To which my husband said pfft, and gave me an eye roll, savvy?

Okay, maybe not. Actually, it went something more like this:

MJS- “Kat, seriously? Do you REMEMBER what happened the last time we deviated from the plan and didn’t go to the Magic Kingdom and eat at Casey’s like we always do?”

TK - “Um, yeah.” :::reluctantly agreeing, as we are never really supposed to admit our husbands are indeed, right::: ;)

MJS - “And what did we end up doing?”

TK - “Went to the Magic Kingdom and ate at Casey’s.”

MJS - “Exactly.”

This conversation references the two, bless my family, two other instances in which we tried to do something other than go to Casey's and inevitably ended up...you guessed it...at Casey's.

Never mind that when I relayed this whole conversation to Nana, she said to me, one, that she was amused that MJS had such a forceful opinion, because he is such an easy going traveler, and two, of course we were going to Casey’s for dinner!

So the family had spoken, so it shall be. :worship:

The tradition of Casey’s is actually long standing in my family. It used to be that when I was in college, there was a flight on your departure day that pretty much gave you enough time for one last run into the Magic Kingdom. So, I always used to, no matter who I was with, go to the Magic Kingdom, have a Casey’s hot dog as my farewell meal, and shop my way down Main Street, ending in the candy store and hopefully scoring the ever elusive bag of purple cotton candy. For those of you who haven’t had purple, I refer you to Jeff Dunham and Peanut, Spark of Insanity.

For that obscure reference, PM me.

I digress.

Anyway, I promise, we really are getting to the Magic Kingdom.

Well, in recent years, especially with kiddos, that running in just doesn’t work anymore because everything takes longer with kiddos and flight times aren't as wonderful as they used to be, so it somehow became that we started every trip with Casey’s. And so began a tradition that, apparently, my husband is not willing to deviate from.

It was with this lofty goal…of heavenly, Disney-fied nitrates…that we headed to the happiest place on earth.

Now, I wasn’t really thinking too much about missing Mom as of yet. Obviously I thought of her with the fantastic room view, and let’s just say she was always in some corner of my mind. I was really focused on the kids on our way to the bus stop. Nemo was so excited and Squirt was looking ever so adorable.

On a side note, as I’m putting in this picture of the baby, I just wanted to offer a little tip to you all that I’d read about here on the DIS boards. This was quite a while ago, before a December trip I took with Mom and Nana when Nemo was about three. Someone was talking about getting those battery operated Christmas lights to wind around their stroller at night. Not only would the light up effects be cool, but it’d be easy to find the stroller.

Mom and I thought this was a great idea, and we searched high and low but couldn’t find those lights. So, Mom bought this beautiful gold garland, and when we got to Disney, we wound the garland around the handle of the stroller. We did it for purely decorative purposes, but let me tell you! Our stroller was SO easy to find in the sea of strollers any time we parked it.

I left that gold garland on for every single trip afterwards, because it was so easy to find the stroller. And when it was finally time to let go of Nemo's stroller (it broke or I totally would have used it for Squirt), I cut off a piece of that gold garland, and still have it to this day.

Were I more Sparrow-like, I'd have woven it into my hair, but as I'm not sporting pirate-y dreads as of yet, it's in a keepsake box. :thumbsup2

This year, I wanted something different for Squirt, so I headed to the dollar store, and keeping in theme with our resort, got some lovely hibiscus garland to wind around the handle. It’s actually quite funny, because throughout the remainder of the trip, we were constantly losing flowers. It became a running joke, how many fell off today, can we find where it came from, can we reattach them. It may have been a bit of a pain, but they were inexpensive, and again, it was always soooo easy to find our stroller.

Now, to return to our regularly scheduled programming.

:happytv:

I have to tell you, when we finally arrived, and got to the gates, it felt the same, but also different. I just. I don’t know. I guess the best way I can describe it to you is that I saw this sign…

http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll289/tarzanskat/DSCI0023.jpg

…and all I could think was, these are my first memories without her.

And when I saw the castle for the first time on that trip, and when I was walking on to Main Street, all I could think was, it’s still here.

I can’t believe it’s still here.

I didn’t cry at that moment, but the tears were there, right in the corners of my eyes. I mentioned this thought to my husband, the not believing it’s all still here, just chugging away, and he said, of course, what did you think would happen?

Honestly? I can’t believe Disney World keeps going without my mother in it. Much in the way that when she was in the hospital, dying, and I was driving to see her, I could not fathom that there were people in cars on the highway whose lives were completely normal. That the sun kept shining. That people were shopping and busy and working and doing. Whatever it is they did. While my mother was dying.

And it was that same feeling, for a moment. Indeed, it’s still here. And in some way, she is too.

We took our time heading down Main Street, since it was Squirt’s first time, and we stopped for the obligatory first castle photos. I have to tell you, these are some of my favorite photos from the trip. We took them ourselves, not with a photographer, and I just really like the way they came out. We’re excited, and happy to be there, and heck, we’re headed to Casey’s, so you know everyone’s happy.

We get to the famed purveyor of oh so holy hot dogs, and order. MJS heads off to secure us a table, and we get down to business. Recently, Casey’s has changed its offerings to include some fancy dressed up dogs, but we were in it for the classics, thank you very much. I do have to say, although good, and although really hitting the spot, since we were all pretty much starving, the hot dogs, buns, etc, are not the same as they used to be. I think that recently Disney must have hit on a new distributor, and it just wasn’t quite as I remembered, nevertheless, it was good.

And it was so sweet to see the baby have his first Casey’s hot dog. We gave him some of that, and some French fries as well. I’m happy to report none of those went up anyone’s nose.

It’s a long story involving Nemo as a toddler.

Perhaps another time.

With full bellies, a round of pit stops, which I should probably add, for those of you who are interested, a stop at the baby care center for Squirt and I.

Squirt was ten months old at the time of this trip, and I am still nursing him. My goal is to make it a full year, and I have to tell you, by the end of the trip, I’d gotten the hang of the whole discreet nursing public thing. In the beginning, and whenever I was near one, however, I’d take advantage of the baby care centers. First of all, they were a wonderfully cool break from the hot weather outside, and second of all, the nursing rooms were so divine. My baby is at that age where everything is so interesting, and with all the hustle and bustle of the World going on, he didn’t always want to nurse, even if he wanted to nurse. So the quiet, soothing music in the nursing rooms at the centers, and the subdued lighting was really perfect for us to have that down time and nurse with some privacy.

Anyway, I mention it for anyone who will be traveling with an infant or small child, I can’t recommend the baby care centers highly enough! Any questions, feel free to ask.

As I said, with full bellies, a round of pit stops, and a nosh for Squirt, it was time for us to develop our plan of attack.

Of course, Nemo definitely had his own ideas. :thumbsup2

Great update, Kat. You did great your first walk in to the MK. I so know how you feel. The first time I walked in Epcot I was fine...although the tears did want to come. It was later in the trip when they did.

I'm so glad you got to Casey's and that Squirt got his first hot dog and fries at the MK.

Can't wait to hear what Nemo's idea was for the plan of attack. :goodvibes

I wondered about how I would have received the baby care centers. I think you are probably right--the World would seem oh-too-interesting to my kids. A qiuet place would definitely be in order.

How fun to have Mr. Pirate insist on Casey's. They do pay attention! And I certainly do believe you all were hungry -- no pics of your meals!

Silly me to come back here without my tissues. I was right there with you, stunned at how the world went on as usual when Dad was dying. And later surprising myself by being able to enjoy some of the old routines again, sooner than I'd thought. It gets better, honest. :goodvibes

No joke, I thought about that, as I was eating it. We have some pictures of the boys eating, but no food pics persay. Too hungry! :lmao:

It's funny, I didn't expect this to be a kleenex worthy update, but as I was writing it, I remembered how I felt as I walked into the park and knew that had to be included. It's all part of the process and part of the trip. :thumbsup2

They're really great. There's a separate room (or rooms, depending on the park) for nursing, with low level lighting and some nice ambient music. There's an area with high chairs to feed the kiddos, and they've got a Disney movie running on the tv nonstop. There's a really nice changing area with changing stations, and they also have a little shop in case you forgot something, in which case you can pay your weight in gold for six diapers. ;)

Aww, I love that MJS insisted you start the trip at the Magic Kingdom with dinner at Casey's! Smart man, indeed! :thumbsup2

How appropos (is that even spelled right???) that the current Disney campaign is Let the Memories Begin because I know you had a lot of them coming back to you on this trip.

If I still had children in strollers I would totally use your garland idea and use the baby centers! As it is, I will squirrel that information away for the time when I have grandchildren. Think I will be able to remember all that in fifteen years? :lmao:

Can't wait to see what Nemo's ideas are for where to head next!

On a totally unrelated note, I could really use your eye for color and design. I am getting ready to paint the kitchen in the next few weeks, and I am so nervous that I am going to pick the wrong color. I want an orange, but not a Halloween orange or a coral/peachy orange. I'm pretty sure that's how you spell it. Yes, I was surprised that was the theming for this year, since I haven't really been paying attention to the catch phrase. I knew about the pictures online and on the castle but never noticed that we were "letting the memories begin."

I LOVE the Baby Care Centers! I just wish they had them in more places, or that the ones they do have were a bit more convenient. I think I only used them once in each park, because it was such a trek out of the way to get to them most of the time. If I was nearby, I would always try to stop in, but I was rarely nearby when the baby decided he needed care.

Memories are the strangest things. I just have to walk past certain places or hear certain songs and I think about the people I've lost. I can only imagine losing someone I've shared Disney with, especially a parent!

So true.

I've had a hard time with Illuminations ever since my mom passed. I have very specific, very strong memories of having dinner in Italy at Alfredo's and watching that with her. We had this amazing waiter who would let us take our glasses of wine out with us to watch Illuminations, and then we'd come back and continue our meal. It's a longer story than that, but I even remember one time my mother telling me that sometimes Illuminations was hard for her because she would think of all the people she'd watched it with in the past, some who had passed on, and some who were just father away than we'd like them.

That always stuck with me.

Thank you for an AMAZING, enlightening, uplifting, thoughtfully written PTR and TR. I read through your entire PTR last night and started the TR this morning while my kiddos were still in bed. Reading about your mother and how you have really grown through the entire situation has really made me feel I can take on anything that comes my way. Kleenex Alert - I cried writing this one. Just sayin'.

“Don't worry, Woody. In just a few hours you'll be sitting around a campfire with Andy making delicious hot Schmoes.”

This particular movie quote, and its response, which is the title of this chapter, never fails to crack up my family.

Especially me.

Delicious hot Schmoes! :lmao:

Anyway, I use it to introduce to you exactly what my six year old had on his mind once he’d finished his lovely Casey’s meal.

Buzz Lightyear!

On the way there, we stopped at the pretty little walkway between the Crystal Palace and Main Street and I took some more photos of the boys in front of the castle. It was just too good to pass up.

Although my inclination would be to head to Pirates of the Caribbean straight away, faster than you can say TarzansKat Loves Captain Jack, shall we say, this trip wasn’t really about my inclinations. And although there was a moment, that will come much, much later on, in which I was indulged in a particular inclination, this trip was mostly about my kids.

And even moreso, mostly Nemo. Although I had some ideas in my head of specific things I wanted to do with Squirt, like his first character meet and greet, and things like that, Nemo is the child who is old enough to voice his opinions, and voice them he did!

We headed over to Tomorrowland and determined the stand by line for Buzz to be too long. I don’t remember what it was, just that I wasn’t willing to wait in it. We convinced Nemo that the best thing to do would be to get fast passes, and that we could come back later and not have to wait in the big line.

He liked this concept.

So we headed over to one of my Tomorrowland favorites, the People Mover. You know I can call it that now because they officially changed the name back to the Tomorrowland Transit Authority People Mover. Some of us remember the Wedway People Mover. Ah, memories.

Anyway, this is one of my favorite rides, and I can’t pinpoint exactly why. You know as I’m sitting here thinking about it, I don’t even really want to try to describe it. It’s just one of those things that is quintessential Disney to me.

We took our obligatory People Mover photos, it’s a must do for my family to take photos on this ride every year, and I of course took a photo of the baby in one of the pitch black tunnels. You can call me a little bit of a sadist, but I love the wide, doe eyed look they get when it’s pitch black in there, and I happened upon it one year by taking a picture of Nemo by accident, and ever since, I just can’t resist. It’s so stinkin’ cute.

Anyway, after the People Mover, Nemo and MJS wanted to check out the wait time for the Speedway, so we headed over there. I think it was about twenty minutes, and we agreed that Nana and I would take the baby, and they could go race cars. Nemo loves this ride. I remember how it made me feel as a kid, so grown up to be driving my very own car! He has such an awesome time on there, I couldn’t say no to him. So Nana and I amused ourselves with a leisurely stroll into Fantasyland and back, and by the time we got back, the boys were done.

On our way back over to Buzz, we discovered the stand that sells the HUGE Disney inflatable balls. And someone was quite, quite enamored. It was so cute to see the baby go absolutely nuts, because he loves to play with a bouncy ball at home, and for him to see this huge one, his eyes lit up like you wouldn’t believe!

http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll289/tarzanskat/DSCI0050-1.jpg

I know I’ve said it before, and you’ll probably get sick of me saying it by the end of this trip, but it’s these unplanned moments that are so amazing to me. That when Squirt saw that huge ball, he was so delighted, so mesmerized, he had to stop and play for a few minutes. And that something so simple can make my baby squeal in delight and laugh and giggle and smile…it just warms your heart. I think babies and children have a certain kind of joy that we lose as adults, and maybe if we get it every now and then, we’re not as free with it as they are. There’s more freedom in youth than we think, and sometimes I wish I could be more like my child, wondering and delighting over something so simple. I guess that’s one of the reasons I love these vacations so much. Because there, in the World, I am. Wondering and delighting over these simple, stolen moments.

We spent a little bit of time fooling around at the misting station as well, the one with the rocket ship on top. It was neat to see MJS take the baby in there, and Squirt’s face as he thought, what is this on me? The mist was so fine, but when Squirt came out, he was covered! It dried quickly and he enjoyed it but you could tell he was a little perplexed. We had to coax Nemo to go in, but once he did, he squealed with delight trying to avoid getting hit too hard, so to speak. It was so sweet. Again, one of those little stolen moments I just love.

After our fun and tomfoolery, it was time to redeem our fast passes and so we headed on over to Buzz and his delightful Space Ranger Spin.

I have to tell you, flat out, this ride is very nostalgic for me. I knew Nemo would want to ride it and I knew I’d love taking Squirt for the first time, but I also knew it’d be pretty hard.

Buzz was my Mom’s favorite Toy Story character, and she loved, loved, loved this ride. It’s even hard for me to talk about her loving it in the past tense, as though I expect her to go in it with us, just like that dream I had where she came with us on the trip. It was another one of those moments where I just sort of marveled that it was still there, that life was continuing on. And I got to the part in line where Buzz is talking, and all I could think of was how many pictures we’d taken in front of him. Of Nemo as a baby, of my Mom with Nemo, of her saying, to infinity, and beyond!

You know when you lose a parent, and you’re going through many of the things that follow afterwards, your brain is sort of numb. And when you get to the point where you’re picking out a floral arrangement to place beside your mother’s casket, and the florist wants to know if you’d like to write the card, you stand there, and stare at it. All I could think about was how much I didn’t want to be writing that card. About the baby growing in my belly, about my son at preschool, about my husband at work, going on normally, and me feeling like I was dying inside because my mother was gone.

So I did the only thing I could do with my brain so numb and my heart going full throttle on sadness. I turned to Disney. And wrote the only thing that I could think of, the thing that I knew would make sense to her and to me, not caring who read it or saw it.

Dear Mom,
We love you. To infinity, and beyond!

Because I really do feel that someday, I’ll get to see her again. Beyond. And my love for her is so infinite, that was the only way I could describe it. With words from Buzz.

As much as I feel my mother in the town I grew up in, in the house I grew up in, in places that are familiar at home, oh, did I feel her right there in that spot. And part of me still wishes that I could go back through time and that she’d be standing there…

I’ve missed her so much these past couple of weeks. Nemo just finished school, he’s now officially done with kindergarten, and while watching him play outside the other night, I couldn’t help but miss her even more. One more milestone that we can’t share. And I don’t know, to me, finishing kindergarten made me even more weepy than him starting, because next year he’ll be in first grade and going full days, and that’s really such a grown up thing for my little boy.

And I wish Mom was here to share it with. Much like I wished she was physically there on our Disney trip, wished I could turn that clock back.

Even though I know how much I’ve learned since then, how profoundly this loss has changed my life, I still want her back. Even though, in dying, she has given me so, so much. It’s something I talk about with my therapist (for those of you who are new to my reports, I willingly admit I’ve needed therapy since my mom passed as her passing was extremely untimely and traumatic) about. Both sentiments, though conflicting, can be true. I can want my mother back and I can admit that my life has changed for the better by experiencing this loss. It’s hard to hold both things in your heart and feel like you’re not betraying your loved one. Feel like you’re honoring their memory. But everything I do that involves me living life, really living it, not just going through the motions, that, I think is honoring my mother. Because we do channel our inner Dorothy (Mom loved the Wizard of Oz, especially Glinda) and follow that yellow brick road.

And right now, that road was leading me on Buzz Lightyear.

Nana and I rode together, and the boys all went in the vehicle ahead of us. I have to say, it was really fun to ride with Nana. I maneuvered the vehicle so that we could get as many points as possible, but I am not the best Buzz player. I’ll admit it. I don’t even remember what my ranking was, because honestly, although I was playing, I was also busy watching the baby watching the ride, and it was really neat to see.

As we disembarked, we took a look at the ride photos and had a good laugh at the baby staring at everything, and all our serious game faces.

Now that we’d tackled our favorites in Tomorrowland, and it was getting to be rather late in the evening, the question was, where do we head next?

So beautifully beautifully said. Methinks you have a very good therapist, you've come so far. It's amazing what the right one can do (freely admitting having had more than one lol).

I love your little moments, and the fact that you can realize they are moments when they happen. That right there, is a gift.

I'm picturing Squirt covered in mist, perplexed, as I type and it makes me smile.

Wow. Some really bittersweet memories in your last update. How hard to be thinking of your mom, yet so enjoyable to see a new baby drink in the whole experience.

And, you're so right - children are so free to react and give their honest opinion. I use them as a barometer all the time in church. I like to see their reactions to the different music that is placed. I love to watch them turn to see where the music is coming from. I like to watch them gently sway to the rhythm of a song. I figure if they are reacting instinctively, then there must be a few adults that are feeling it too, even though they remain motionless.

Love all of the little moments you enjoyed - the big ball, the mister, etc. (Did you buy one of the balls? - I would have been so tempted to!)

We had one of those evenings last night - the three of us played a few board games and then went outside to catch lightning bugs. Simple yet perfect!

I totally agree with you. I remember going on it as a kid, and you know, it really hasn't change that much over the years, despite its various names and incarnations, it's still the same old People Mover. There's a kind of comfort in that, I think.

And I won't lie.

On a hot day, that cool breeze as you're whipping around the track is really nice.

"Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, The Magic Kingdom proudly presents our spectacular festival pageant of nighttime magic and imagination in thousands of sparkling lights and electro-synthe-magnetic musical sounds. The Main Street Electrical Parade!"

Now I have to admit. I didn’t necessarily think we’d get to see this parade. It is my absolute favorite from my childhood. I think the only thing I prefer more now is the Boo to You parade at the Halloween party. And that’s probably only because it’s got my favorite pirate swaggering about in it. But if you asked me to pick, truthfully, I’d probably pick the Main Street Electrical Parade.

Something about this particular parade reminds me of being a kid in Disney World. It brings me back to a time when my parents took me, when, in a lot of ways, life was just simpler. When instead of being the caregiver, I was taken care of. And that parade makes me feel that warm, that loved, that nostalgic. And it’s wonderful.

We were heading out of Tomorrowland, toward Main Street and noticed that it was about that time. I didn’t even think we’d be able to see it since we hadn’t lined up in advance and Main Street and the hub were pretty well packed.

As we got to Main Street, it was just starting. MJS found this tiny spot under the ropes where Nemo and I could fit. Squirt was asleep in his stroller, pretty much done for the night. The cast members were directing you to either get under the rope or move it along, folks. MJS hung out with the stroller in the doorway to the candy shop, and Nana, Nemo, and I all fit under the rope. Now, let me tell you a little bit about the kindness of strangers. The woman next to me, instead of being perturbed that we were last minute participants…and let me tell you, I was super aware of not taking anyone else’s space…was so kind, she offered to let Nemo stand in further up with her kids. He was too shy to do it for very long, but it was the nicest gesture, and I so appreciated it. I felt we were being smiled down upon this whole day and this was just another kindness to add to the blessings we’d already received.

I know you’re probably going to be disappointed, but I don’t have any pictures. MJS asked me while I was watching if I wanted to take the camera out and I said no. I didn’t want to watch that parade from behind a lens. I wanted to enjoy it. The sight, the sound, yes, even the people around me. ;)

There have been times when we haven’t seen the parade due to weather, and times that I can remember when we caught it on the fly, just like we did that night. One of those was the first time we took my FIL, which was a huge deal since he and MJS didn’t have the best relationship at one point.

I thought of all those times, and I thought of watching it with my Mom, of course. I thought about her a lot this day, this trip…I think about her now while I’m writing it.

We didn’t watch the whole thing as Nemo got a little antsy toward the end and really wanted to get moving. Nana had promised him she’d get him a bag of cotton candy. At the time, we didn’t realize they were a snack credit, so she paid for it out of pocket. Before that, we’d gone over to watch them making it, and low and behold, it was my favorite purple!!!!

Do you know about purple cotton candy? It’s the glorious flavor that happens when they’re changing over from pink to blue. You get a few glorious bags of purple, and it’s the best flavor ever. Well, we couldn’t convince Nemo that he wanted purple cotton candy (he picked blue) but they were handing out samples! Of purple!!! I was even heaven. I couldn’t eat a whole bag, but I sure could enjoy a sample. We got one for everyone, and it was an awesome moment.

http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll289/tarzanskat/DSCI0052-1.jpg

Did I mention it was cold in there? ;)

Anyway, cotton candy in hand, I led my family over to the hat shop.

Because we were going to buy mouse ears? No.

Because I had a little special something I wanted to do with them.

For those of you who don’t know, there’s an old style telephone on the wall in the hat shop near one of the doors. If you pick it up and listen to it, you’ll hear a party line, mostly a conversation of a girl talking to her mother.

Mom and I did this in January. I have the best pictures of us by that phone. And I decided that my family needed to do this too. It just…seemed right. Even though it was hard to do specific things I had done with her, and it gave me that ache in my chest, it was good to do them as well.

http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll289/tarzanskat/DSCI0054-1.jpg

Everyone really liked it! I didn’t tell them what it was, and I made Nemo go first. He thought it was funny to listen to, but tired of it pretty quickly. MJS and Nana got a kick out of it, and I listened for a bit to bring back those memories.

Having had the day that we’d had, we didn’t really feel the need to do anything else. We’d gotten in some of Nemo’s favorite rides, and we’d had some really magical moments. Our vacation had started with a bang!

One can only imagine what’s in store…

I didn't know about that phone either! What a fun little thing to share with your family!

Just pop into the candy shop every time you go to MK, and you'll come across purple eventually! :goodvibes

That is a wonderful first day.

I am not a big fan of the MSEP, but I can understand why so many people are nostalgic about it.

I will have to keep and eye out for the purple cotton candy and get it for Boo next year.

It was a great first day. And I can't speak highly enough about the purple. :cloud9:

I loved that update because I feel the exact same way about the MSEP. Tom and I were just talking about this the other day because he knows how deeply excited I am to be able to see that parade again--in 10 DAYS--because of what it meant to me as a child. He only got to go to WDW before me one time as a child, but we went frequently, and that parade was always the highlight of our trips. I think it will always be the quintessential memory I have of my trips with my parents as a child. I have already forewarned him that there will be tears streaming down my face the first time I see it on this trip, but they are all happy ones!!!! CAN'T WAIT!!!!!

What a lovely chapter. I never connected that you got purple when they are switching over the colors but that makes total sense.

I haven't had cotton candy in such a long time that it sounds really delicious, I might have to indulge in January.

I love that phone, it is such a neat extra little touch. One of the many that Disney has to increase the magic. :wizard:

Oh, I was crying, too. I didn't write that in, did I? When I saw the parade, I got totally overwhelmed with emotion, not only that I was getting to see it, but that I wasn't see it with Mom. I was grateful and sad all at the same time.

What a lovely chapter. I never connected that you got purple when they are switching over the colors but that makes total sense.

Lovely chapter as always!

We really enjoyed MSEP in January - it was a nice change from Spectro.

We tried the phone but it wasn't working. I will have to try again. Love all of the tiny hidden details that make WDW so amazing!

Actually, I'll have to see if I can scrounge up a photo for Chelsea. It's from an MNSSHP, and there's practically every color in the world and World of cotton candy. Green, orange, pink, etc, etc. It looked so good!

If you find it can you post it here? I would so love to see that picture. Cotton Candy is truely one of my favorite treats.

and for those who are new to my trip reports, let me preface this mega post by saying that MJS and I bought a house this year.

Actually, in some ways, I like to think that my mother gave me this house. Because it was a portion of my inheritance money that I used as a down payment. And when we first looked at it, even though it was an overwhelming amount of work that needed to be done, there were little signs throughout that Mom approved.

And then I had a dream about her and my children playing in the yard, and that pretty much cinched it for me.

It was a LONG process, and it's an even longer story. Suffice it to say it's our first house, it's a major fixer upper, and we've been in the process of doing all that work. Well, I design, MJS does the work. I'm the queen of unpacking, he's reno (as in renovation) man.

So for you who would like to know, here are the fruits of our labors. And I promise, this is Disney related.

There's lots of little Disney things throughout my house. Let's see how many you can spot.

Hi Kat,

I have been absent from the DIS since losing my mom. Something about that world going on thing made it really difficult to put myself into this place. It was like accepting that I could go on too. But just recently I've been thinking more and more about it. I finally logged back in today and what did I see right on top but a TR from You! It was a sign that I'm meant to come back, I think.

I've been to Disney twice this year and I've had a lot of other changes in my life so I'm going to think about starting a trip report of my own. Big step.

Thanks for putting yourself out there. You make a difference.

Kat, I missed a couple of updates, but I'm back (and thank you for the sweet PM's yesterday....I just wish we could have worked it out ).

I love the Main Street Electrical Parade. It was the first parade I ever saw or my boys ever saw. Unfortunately, we missed it last night, but I will NOT miss it this year if I can help it.

What a sweet woman to let Nemo stand in front with her children. I don't understand why more people don't do this? Don't they realize these little kids can't see over the big people? Mark and I always give our spots up, whether we are sitting or standing at the curb, sitting on a pillar's ledge, etc.

The house looks great! I love the boys' rooms. You and DH have done a great job!

That's so nice! And you know, I never even assumed that anyone would do that for us. We were lucky in that the people in front were sitting, so Nemo had a pretty clear view anyway, but offering to let him stand with her kids behind the people that were sitting, well that was really sweet, and unexpected. :goodvibes

I have to say, as far as fixer uppers go, yes we've found some "dumb" things but, for the most part, it's all been easy to fix. And the good thing in this sense is that we really liked the house, and my husband felt we'd paint anything we went into anyway and change it however we liked, this way we're really getting to know what's behind those walls, what's going on in that room, etc.

Starting from scratch could be so nice though. :lmao:

Hey, folks. I'm sorry there hasn't been the consistent weekly updates like I had going on before. I've had a really rough week. One of my dear friends just lost her mother, and I went to the memorial service last night. Since I didn't want to bring the kids, I waited for MJS to get home, and went by myself. I'm never sure whether or not it's a good idea to do things like that by myself, but I am determined to be there for my friend.

I feel so badly for her. There's a lot of circumstances surrounding this loss...aren't there always, I guess...and so I'm trying to be the best friend I can right now.

Selfishly, any time I experience, or someone close to my experiences a loss, all I can think about is my mom.

And I've been having a really hard time, and thinking about her a lot these past couple of weeks.

We're preparing for Squirt's first birthday, which is the 26th, and I can't help but think that this is one more thing we're doing without her. My family has been so supportive and helpful in planning his party, which is the weekend after his birthday, but I can't help but want my mother.

Actually, there have been a lot of times this week that I have wanted my mother. It doesn't negate being grateful that I had her...actually, I feel very blessed to have had the relationship that we had...I would just like some more of it, thank you very much.

I thought...rather mistakenly...that once we got past a year, things would get easier, and I'm afraid that they really don't. Because all I can think about it is how much she would have loved to plan Squirt's party with me. How much she would have spoiled him just like she spoiled Nemo. How much I miss her, and how much my heart aches for the son that will never get to know her in person, only through us.

And we can keep her memory alive, and it's wonderful, but I still miss her so much. And it's times like this, times of great transition, that no matter how long it's been since her passing, I feel it the most.

Squirt will be one. He's starting to self-wean, so we won't be nursing much longer. I just can't believe this year has gone by so quickly, and although I'm sad, I can recognize the many blessings that we've had. We have been very lucky, we have been taken care of.

And I will be okay. I know that.

So, anyway, I'll try to get another chapter up before his birthday, because I have a feeling next week will be a little crazy pulling everything together. Just wanted to let you all know where I'm at right now.

I hope you can help your friend and you both can help each other. I'm sure it is a very difficult thing (can't say firsthand) so just know that we support you!

Happy Birthday Squirt!! I bet that year flew by, didn't it! I didn't nurse that long but I remember it being sort of bittersweet when we were done with that phase!

She's an awesome friend, and she's the one who recommended her therapist to me. I absolutely adore my friend and my therapist, so that was a win-win referral! :lmao:

It did go by so fast. And ending nursing is bittersweet. He's already so independent, this is just one more thing.

I have so much more sympathy for people going through loss now, but selfishly it's also so much harder to be strong for them. Part of me wants to hide when I hear about yet another friend dealing with death or even just with cancer. Remember to take care of yourself too.

I talk to my therapist all the time about the "shoulds" -- I feel like I should be handling things better now, after all it's been almost a year. I should be able to realistically accept mom's death, but honestly I'm still struggling with losing such a huge part of my life. And each milestone that happens for me or the kids happens without her and makes things difficult again. I get it. And all I can say is that it sucks and I'm here to listen and understand.

It's hard to remember to take care of myself. I remember how wonderful everyone was for me, and what a great support, and I want to do the same, you know? At the same time, it's so hard.

Ah, those "shoulds." I totally, totally hear you, understand you, and am so glad you understand me. It really, really helps.

You know, my husband said something to me last night that seemed so insightful, even though it was pretty simple.

"It's never going to get easier. Everything you do without her is going to be hard, because you miss her."

He's right. I don't mean it to sound negative. It's not going to get easier, I'm only going to learn how to deal with it better. That's all.

Squirt will be one. He's starting to self-wean, so we won't be nursing much longer.

Dude, wasn't it just yesterday you and I had this covo:

Me: Hello?
You: Hi. I had a baby.

I love you a whole lot.
And every day may not be easier but every day you are stronger. Trust Tink. Tink knows. ;)

Also I just wanted to let you know part of the reason I joined the gym is because of you, Tink, LL, and Jen. I want to be healthy and all of you encourage me even though you didn't know it.

One day we'll all have to do a Disney 5K together! :grouphug:

Hot holy carp, the World would never be the same!

I would, seriously, start a PTR for it. It would be neat because it would put feelers out there for anyone who would want to join us. And we could all contribute. It would be like a bunch of mini-PTRs all in one. I'm just not sure if it would get 'shut down' on the PTR board for being too early if we seriously started it now.

Hmmm...it's a quandry all right. We could always start a thread on the community board and then move it over to the PTR thread later in the fall? I think that would be acceptable. But then the more I think about it, some people have had really long PTRs as well and I think as long as it is trip related it should be okay.

I was just "perusing" the PTR boards and there was a thread for Oct. 2012, but that's the furthest out I saw at first glance.

We could start on the CBs but I run into so many not nice people over there I'd be worried we'd pick up some unwelcome passengers, so to speak.

Maybe I'll PM one of the PTR moderators and ask. Whaddyah think?

Hooray for Hollywood! I’m ready to start singing now. But before I delight you all with my splendiferous, melodious voice (ha, ha) I backtrack to the beginning.

Or rather, to the evening. I’d intended to start this chapter with May 29, the second day of our trip, but it occurred to me that when we got back to our room we had a rather charming display and a few new friends waiting for us.

http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll289/tarzanskat/DSCI0093.jpg

http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll289/tarzanskat/DSCI0091.jpg
Alright, I'm totally taking the centering the photos thing from creativeamanda. I love that on your trip report, and I'm doing it here!

Now, I have to tell you that when Nemo saw Squirt’s crib, he was pretty upset. Mousekeeping may not have realized we had more than one kiddo in the room, and they took all of Nemo’s lovies, and mixed them with Squirt’s, and well, let’s just say Nemo was not to pleased to see his brother getting all his lovies!

The blow was softened a little bit by seeing this:

http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll289/tarzanskat/DSCI0092.jpg

His pillow pet, properly situated.

However, I made sure to rectify that situation for the following evening, leaving no doubt as to the fact that there were two kiddos. ;)

And, for further fun, before we even get to talking about Disney’s Hollywood Studios and strong with the force :yoda: we are, I must include incriminating photos of my brood. As their mother and the woman who carried them for a collective 18 months, I feel it is my duty, nay, my right to take such photos. One never knows when future girlfriends / fiancées / wives may need to see such things.

http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll289/tarzanskat/DSCI0096-1.jpg

http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll289/tarzanskat/DSCI0095-1.jpg

In all honesty, this is pretty much a standard with me on trips. You have to take pictures of the exhausted kiddos. It’s just too dang cute. I remember when Nemo was a baby and he used to sleep with his little diapered patoot straight up in the air, legs folded under. My girlfriend and I would always use those types of photos at the finish of our scrapbooks, because they are, quite literally, the end. :rotfl2:

That was a fun digression, wasn’t it?

So we slept in a bit this morning, being that it was our first day of vacation.

Even though there was a Force :yoda: to be reckoned with.

Oddly enough, it’s nothing to do with Star Wars weekends that threw a proverbial wrench into our plans (No:darth:), but rather something a little more of the Pixar persuasion. More on that later.

We had reservations for an early lunch at the Brown Derby, and headed off to Hollywood Studios really looking forward to this meal. The first sit down of the trip. The Brown Derby. One of my favorites.

By the time we got to the park, we were pretty early on our reservation time.

Early enough to stop and take these photos.

http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll289/tarzanskat/DSCI0058.jpg

http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll289/tarzanskat/DSCI0059.jpg

And the obligatory…whaddya mean he’s sleeping…

http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll289/tarzanskat/DSCI0060-1.jpg

http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll289/tarzanskat/DSCI0062-1.jpg
(A little digression. Nemo calls that baseball cap his Mimi hat. It actually belonged to my mother, and is one of a few Disney polo hats she had. Nemo loves that hat so much, and wears it a lot. I'm so glad I could give him something tangible to help him feel close to her when he needs it.)

Now this shot is particularly funny because the first time we took Nemo to Disney World, he was about eight months old. And every time we would arrive at a park, he would be asleep. Nemo was my stroller baby. He LOVED his stroller. Honestly, he loved the stroller so much, he talked about how he would manage without one on this trip. This was his first trip as “a big boy” without a stroller, and he did awesome. There were a couple of times where he needed to sit for a moment, but I’m jumping ahead.

Anyway, point being, Nemo was my stroller baby.

Does anyone see where this is going?

See that picture of Squirt sleeping in the stroller? I want you to pay attention to that. Hold it in your mind. Ponder it a bit.

Here, just in case…

http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll289/tarzanskat/DSCI0060-1.jpg

Alright, you remember that for later, ‘kay?

So, with sleeping baby in tow, I headed to the Brown Derby to see if we could check in early. Nana was getting her ECV, and MJS was running to get fast passes for Star Tours and to check the situation with Toy Story Mania. You know, I will never forget the sight of MJS, with Nemo on his back, running towards Star Wars land. :lmao: So cute.

Now, I’m telling you. Star Tours was our priority on this day. We’d never participated in a Star Wars weekend, we know DHS would be crazy, and we were determined to be able to say we’d done it once. This was the right age for Nemo, and I knew MJS would love it.

I also knew it was a holiday weekend. And I knew about Toy Story Mania. I am no fool. I am a card carrying…well, you know what I mean…member of the DIS boards. But when my husband caught up with me at the Brown Derby to tell me, I was STILL shocked.

I could NOT believe it.

He got fast passes for Star Tours, no problem. And then he thought he’d check wait times and fast pass return times on TSM. Not because you can piggyback fast passes like that, but just because it was worth taking a look.

And I am not joking when I tell you that the fast pass return time at 1050 in the morning was a full TWELVE HOURS LATER.

I’m sorry.

I know.

But forgive me for a moment.

It’s ridiculous.

Really?

Really?

For a ride that I wasn’t sure that I even wanted to go on because my last memory of it was so Mom-specific, and so freakin’ awesome, I just wasn’t sure that I could do it.

But let me tell you. Nemo wanted to go on TSM. And talked about it. At length. Before we even went on the trip.

So this would be the ultimate turning point…though I didn’t know it yet…of our trip. The point where every decision then hinged on this simple fact. There was no way to possibly do Toy Story Mania and Star Tours in the same day. Because there was no way that we could keep the kids up that late. Right? Right?

And even if we could, by the time we could get fast passes, since we’d already gotten Star Tours ones, they’d be gone, given that they were already a TWELVE HOUR window, and almost at park closing time. By the time we’d waited the appropriate…what is it…two hours later you can get a fast pass or something…they were indeed gone, but I’m jumping ahead.

This all means that our other alternative was to wait in a 2+ hour line. With a ten month old. Who by the way, has recently started moonlighting as Houdini. I kid you not. Crawls out of exersaucers, high chairs with the greatest of ease.

And I’m also telling you…I don’t do 2+ hour lines. I don’t. Never mind the kids.

Which then leads to everything that follows from here on out. How do you make the commando and the casual work? How do you get your child on that coveted ride?

And how glad are you that you decided to park hop? ;)

I feel it is my duty, nay, my right to take such photos. One never knows when future girlfriends / fiancées / wives may need to see such things.

It's like Squirt has his own type of yoga.
"And now, class, we're going to transition into the Frog pose."

The Brown Derby. One of my favorites.

I took a gander recently at the BD menu and was relieved to see my Sterling Pork Chop still on th menu...until I saw it was no longer smothered in smoked gouda!!! :sad1:
I hate it when they keep a dish on the menu but 'play' with it.

I can only hope they never do that with my beloved Pork Tenderloin with Goat Cheese Polenta at CG.

And every time we would arrive at a park, he would be asleep.

Much like every time I reach the Hub at MK I must "go left"? ;)

See that picture of Squirt sleeping in the stroller? I want you to pay attention to that. Hold it in your mind. Ponder it a bit.

See...THAT'S how you can get your boy to nap on a daily basis with no fuss! Put him in the stroller and take him to Disney! And if you need help with that, as his godmother, I'm happy to make the sacrifice and tag along. ;)

Star Tours was our priority on this day.

I REALLY want to experience the new Star Tours but I REALLY don't want to lose my lunch. I foresee an afternoon full of Dramamine, a quick ride on Star Tours, and then an afternoon nap on the beach of the BC/YC to sleep off said Dramamine.

And I am not joking when I tell you that the fast pass return time at 1050 in the morning was a full TWELVE HOURS LATER.

I’m sorry.

I know.

But forgive me for a moment.

It’s ridiculous.

Really?

Really?

You know what's worse? The near violence BF and I witnessed in the mad rush to get FPs for this ride. Sure, it was all sanity from Hollywood Blvd. to Pixar Place, but once you were within sight of those FP machines, forget it. Sure they had "lines" in place but that didn't stop some woman in an ECV from almost mowing down a little girl who was in line, in front of her, standing still and waiting her turn. And then the lady had the audacity to yell at the little girl, who she didn't know from Eve, and tell her to stop "running in front of handicapped people". :sad2: It made me want to spit. What is WRONG with people?

Because there was no way that we could keep the kids up that late. Right? Right?

Well, I'm not sure. I suppose that would be a question of sanity!

I don't run.
Unless I'm being chased.
By something big and mean.
That will kill me.

Holy cow 10 HOURS later...and a 2 hour wait...no way I would have waited but I can't wait to see how you figured it out!!

:rolleyes1

Your kiddos are just so adorable!! Love the pics!!!

Thank you.

You have a practicing Houdini on your hands :lmao: Awww too cute!!!!

I'm glad you think it's cute. :lmao:

Another fabulous update!!!!

Thanks!

I would be happy to come to your Tiaras Tutus whatever you called it, and take your pictures. I don't run.

:rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:

But I'd love to see you all dressed up and running! You need someone to take group shots right? Call me.

I think the motto of this trip is the more the merrier, run or no run.

Speaking of which, did you know that you can do the 5K at a fast walk. Can I convince you? What if we had some kind of motivation at the end? What's your poison? ;)

12 HOURS!!??!!?? :scared1: That's just ridiculous!
Whatever did you do???

Yup. ::yes::

It's like Squirt has his own type of yoga.
"And now, class, we're going to transition into the Frog pose."

I swear, when I look at that, especially with the green onesie, he does look like a little frog!

They do that a lot at Disney. Sometimes it's a seasonal issue...as I learned firsthand. Remember that meal at CG? Man, that was awesome. :thumbsup2

Do you know how much it killed me that Nemo wanted to go to the right? :lmao:

I don't think we have enough room here for me to answer that question.

Happy birthday, Squirt! :cheer2: A tad early, but one can never have too many birthday wishes. Just ask DD, whose birthday is today. She's been celebrating for a month already!

Twelve hours for FP return?!?!?! Yikes! And two-hour standby? Ha! Double ha! No stinkin' way, with or without kids. But Nemo soooo wants to go .... Anxious to hear how you resolved this.

OK, the tutus and tiaras are calling me. I've always wanted to do a Disney 5K, and the allure of tutus seals it. Trouble is, I don't run. (My doc actually told me once that I'm too "delicately strung.") But I can support the team! Since there's already a photog on board, I volunteer to be Water Girl. Or rather, Water Princess. princess: Fingers crossed for the OK on the PTR.

Do you power walk? The requirement for a 5K is a 16 minute mile, but Tink said they're pretty easy going on that, some people she felt (when she did her 5K in Feb) were actually a bit slower than that.

If you don't, it's okay. I'm sure we could use a water princess. :thumbsup2

There were people behind me who were easily closer to a 20 min./mile pace. If you want to know what that feels like, find a treadmill and set it to 3.0 mph. If you can do that, or a little better, you'd stand a good chance of finishing.

They were a bit lax about the pace requirement, but only for the 5K, not the 1/2 marathon. I think, as long as everyone's set to finish by the time they need everyone done to break down and have the park operating as normal, it's all good. That was my impression.

Still waiting on the OK for the PTR. I'll let you know. If I don't hear anything I'll guess that we're ok. Regardless, I'll post something here for sure!

I'm SO into it.
2013 - Royal Family 5K (assuming the name doesn't change) - all of us lovely ladies. I'm IN!

Before I comment on your update, I'd just like to invite myself and say I'm in, if that's ok! I really want to do a Disney 5K someday, and I think it would be much more fun with a group! And I think I could definitely run one by 2013! :rotfl: I'm going to restart the Couch to 5K in the Fall, when it's a little cooler out!

I would LOVE to go to Star Wars weekends one year! I know they're crazy, but I love Star Wars, I think it would be so cute to see all the Disney characters dressed as Star Wars characters!

12 hour return for FP's at TSM? :scared1: That's ridiculous. I mean, really. When is the craziness for this ride going to die down a little? It's awesome, but come on!!! :rotfl:

Toy Story Midway Mania sure is a frustrating ride. It is a lot of fun, but the lines are ridiculous. They need to just build another one and be done with it, or swap it with Buzz Lightyear, since there's so much more to do in the Magic Kingdom to detract the crowds.

I hope you figured it out, and little Nemo got his ride.

EDIT: Actually...if they simply reinstated Fast Pass on the shows at DHS, it would help control the return time at TSMM, because people would have elsewhere to get Fast Passes.

So yeah...12 hours is ridiculous. I know you are smart so you figured out how to ride this without the two hour wait or the 12 hour fastpass return. That's my guess anyways.

Ooh! Yes, I can power walk! What a relief. Last year, I got the notion to do a 1/2 marathon, to benefit the charity for the cancer DH had. You will recall that I do not run. So of course, I thought I'd do a 13.1 run. Right. First thing I did was throw out my back. Know how I did that? Sitting at the 1st info session. :sad2: Clearly not meant to be. Anywho, I can walk. It's been a while since there was a whole lot of power in it, but by 2013 I'm sure I can be back to my old 15-minute miles. Whoo-hoo! I'm going to start planning my tutu!

You know, I am so glad that all my DIS friends are having this type of reaction. I was worried that maybe I was getting soft in my planning / commando-nature, and letting the pirate overrun, but I can see by all your reactions that the twelve hour return, is indeed, not normal. :lmao:

Well, today is the big day. Squirt turns one. It's happy and bittersweet all at the same time. I can't believe how far we've come in a year.

We've been working like mad to get things ready for his big birthday party this weekend. I'll make sure to take plenty of pictures, because it's Mickey-themed. Instead of traditional colors, we went with lime green and a bright cobalt blue, and he'll be wearing the tie dye I made him for this trip. I'm really looking forward to seeing all our family and friends, and having a happy celebration in our new home.

Tonight we'll have dinner with Dad, Nana, and my sister. She flew in for Squirt's birthday, and I'm looking forward to a nice family dinner.

Now I must go. It's time to spoil him rotten. ;)

I think it's that exactly. It's the only ride for the whole family that people want to do more than once. We spent hardly any time at DHS on our last trip, even though it's DH's favorite, because there was only so much that we could do with the baby, and we skipped TSM entirely.

Oh well...maybe Disney will figure out that having an hour+ wait for TSM all the time is keeping people out of the stores and restaurants, and they'll do something to deter the crowds.

Ok, so after joining in on the Tiaras, Tutus, & Tie-Dye and reading the entire tr (so far) of Tinkerbellerella, I had to come & read yours. And cry like a baby!! :sad1:

I just want to tell you that I lost my Daddy 9 years ago this summer. I was pregnant at the time with baby #4, & it was soooooo hard on me! I miss him every day. I still tear up when one of the kids says or does something like he used to or when I think about how he never got to see any of them grown up & never even met 2 of them. I totally know what you mean about being better for having gone thru this, but it doesn't mean you wanted it or needed it or don't wish they were still there. I wasn't done with him!!!

I will say that I was a mess for quite a while. It does get easier to bear, tho, I promise. You will always miss her & wish she was right there with you, but she still is. :littleangel: That is evident in your trip & your life with your family.

Now I obviously HAVE to come run with all of you lovely ladies in 2013!! :grouphug:

I love what you said though, that you weren't done with him. I certainly wasn't done with my mom either. I think getting over the anger was one of the hardest things I've ever done. Being angry for me, felt very uncomfortable. It was easier to be sad, but for a long time, I was very, very angry.

I love what you said though, that you weren't done with him. I certainly wasn't done with my mom either. I think getting over the anger was one of the hardest things I've ever done. Being angry for me, felt very uncomfortable. It was easier to be sad, but for a long time, I was very, very angry.

Anyway, I'm so glad to have you here and I hope you can run with us in 2013!! :goodvibes

I know what you mean about the anger. I think my sister is still angry, which really makes me sad. Until you can get past that, for the most part, it probably won't all be gone, you really can't heal.

It's hard. I didn't realize how angry I was until after I let it go.

first steps - so exciting and scary at the same time! Exciting for the new milestone and adventure that awaits him and scary for all the additional babyproofing that will need to be done now that he is mobile!

It is exciting and scary, you are so right! And all I can think is that when he really masters it, I'm going to be absolutley chasing him. He may crawl fast, but when he starts walking, oh boy. :lmao:

I think that fate treated me very kindly on this trip. Well…aside from the bazillion hour fastpass return for Toy Story Mania, that is. ;)

I mean that more in regard to Mom. At the Brown Derby, which was our first reservation of the trip, we had a favorite waiter. I was spared the difficulty of having to tell him that my mother had passed because he was not working on this day.

I worried a little bit about things like that. I would have loved to have had him as our server, but part of me was totally relieved that I didn’t have to speak the words out loud.

I can’t…

I can’t even tell you how many times I’d eaten here. With Mom. With Mom and Nana. With larger family groups, including my husband, my father in law, my father. So many different incarnations of similar meals, so many different memories.

How can you hold them all in your heart and know that you’re going to be okay?

It’s not easy. It wasn’t easy to go, but at the same time it was. Because I was with Nana. And because still going to the Brown Derby seemed like a tribute to Mom. It was one of the things on this trip that I couldn’t give up, it’s one of my favorite if not my absolute favorite signature restaurant, and well…despite my hurt, I was glad to be there.

Squirt was totally asleep in the stroller, and they were kind enough to seat us at a booth where we could just park him next to us and not have to worry.

Dreaming of Lunch

We had a great time at this meal. Eventually Squirt woke up and was an active participant, and that was even more fun.

Planning Their Attack

I don’t really want to do a blow by blow here. The adults split the Cobb for an appetizer, which was divine, as usual, and honestly, I barely remember what everyone ordered for lunch. I had the noodle bowl, which was safe with my dairy allergy, and the baby really enjoyed the noodles as well. Oh, and I got this absolutely divine fruit cobbler for dessert! I believe it’s listed on their menu as the no sugar added option, and it was wonderful. Again, no dairy, and I was so happy.

I was SO full, but also so happy.

No food art photos, I’m afraid, my friends. I was lucky enough to make it through the meal without crying, never mind stopping to take pictures of our food.

Nana and I each had a glass of champagne, but oddly enough, when it came time to toast, the words got stuck in my throat.

I had so much to say. So much to say about Mom…about her being there with us even though she wasn’t…about honoring her, about loving her…and it just stuck. I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t say any of it.

And I looked at Nana, and as our eyes met, I knew that I didn’t have to. Because she felt all those things I was feeling, and it wasn’t even necessary to say them out loud.

And so we did what I consider to be one of the cheesiest, albeit heartfelt toasts I’ve ever done.

“Cheers.”

When Nana's birthday rolled around this year, I didn't know what to give her. I think we both would agree that we don't need more stuff. That time spent together is more important to us than any thing we could receive. It's something my mother always tried to teach me, and I'm sure that Nana was a big purveyor of that as well.

So instead of giving my grandmother the gift of something she couldn't possibly need, I gave her this instead. Lunch, on us, at the Derby, on our trip. And it was the most perfect gift I could have thought of.

I was glad she was there. Even though it ached not to have my mother, I felt lucky to have my grandmother. To share a new memory. To give her a birthday lunch at one of her favorite places, as well as mine. She thanked us afterwards, but no thanks were required.

Cheers.

And that pretty much sums it up. Cheers to us. Cheers to being here together. Cheers to life. To still being alive, when so much has changed and so much is different.

Cheers.

It was really wonderful to have that special moment with Nana, even if slightly bittersweet.

Thank you, hon. That's so sweet of you to remember moments from my previous reports. :goodvibes Now I have this new memory, and it's a good one. The boys got into some crazy antics during the meal that I didn't really talk about, but they kept me laughing for sure.
