Done correctly and by a professional they aren't bad at all for your hair. :)

I've got great hair and I get a perm 4 times a year and my hair colored every six weeks! (all done by a pro, of course!)

The person doing your hair has to know what they are doing. Like other's said, if done correctly, no problem.

It does dry the hair somewhat, but there are things you can do to help that.
Or that's been my experience anyway. As I'm getting older my hair is straightening out. Well, not today, but on low humidity days.

I didn't know perms were back in. Guess I should pay more attention to Cosmo. :)

Jodi,
Do you color your hair? Perms are much more gentle than ever before. Why are you wanting a perm?

I usually have to get them 4-5 times a year but now my hair is starting to thin (I'm 43 years old) maybe due to age? Just hate getting them but my hair has always been sooo thin!

Jules, getting a perm does not mean you have "poodle hair" or even curly hair at all.

Some women need perms just to give their hair any body at all. Done well, no one even knows you HAVE a perm.

Jodi, you might check with your doctor on the thinning hair issue. Does it seem to be worse after a perm?

Jodi,
Perms usually help disguise thinning hair. Yes, at 43 your hair will start changing ven more! :( I have a female client who uses Rogaine & has fabulous luck with it. Seems to work better on women than men. Color will help thinning seem thicker also.

Amen, WMichelle. Well said. I wasn't even going to comment.

you know, it could be possible that jules wasn't trying to be mean. i was thinking the same thing, but not in a mean way...just in a "oh, that's interesting" way. it's hard to tell what a person's intent is in print. :)
