I am getting a Canon 60D but I also like to have a smaller camera for more casual days.

Is there a newer version of my S5IS out there I should be looking at?

I know the experts on here will know the answer.

Yes, the Canon SX30IS came out in September 2010. Here's the link to this camera on Amazon.com (link (http://www.amazon.com/Canon-SX30IS-Digital-Optical-Stabilized/dp/B0041RSPR8/ref=dp_cp_ob_p_title_1)).

I had the SX20 which was the previous model up until a few months ago. As long as you are not expecting dSLR like performance and speed out of it you will be pleased with it. The zoom range is excellent, the pictures for the most part were sharp, and the AF was fast in good light. The only place the camera really struggled was in low light situations. The AF slowed down considerably in low light and sometimes had trouble locking focus. Other than that I really had no complaints with the camera. A bonus too was that the HD videos it shot were of excellent quality.

SX30IS looks like a very nice camera, how is the battery life for the SX30IS? I still have my Canon S3IS and it uses AA batteries. Does the Lithium batteries last longer than the AA's?

I have been using the S5 for a couple of years and I just got an SX20IS on e-bay for a fair price. I like that I won't have to buy different memory cards or batteries. I like a camera that uses AAs. And going from 8 MP to 12 & 20 optical zoom will be a nice upgrade, I think. I did go ahead and buy 4 8-GB cards. I like that I can hook the SX20IS up to my HD TV. I miss the sound recorder my S5 had. It is missing on the new one. Since I saved money on this on e-bay, I went ahead and sprang for a new external flash. I got the Canon 430 EX II. I justified the cost by telling myself, when I FINALLY broke down and got a DSLR, I could use it for that as well! ;) Lastly, although Canon doesn't sell them, I went on Amazon.com and found an adapter ring and filters, and lens hood that would fit the SX20 IS.
