Somehow DH forgot to take the garbage out and Lady (the cocker spaniel and notorious scavenger) ripped it open and of course Winnie (Eng. bully) joined in. THere was about a handful of raw ground beef in there. Any idea if they could get e-coli from this??

NOt likely since dogs have enzyms that will take care of that. They could get loose stools, but unlikely with that small an amount. Dogs bodies are set up to digest raw meat. In domestication we have compromised that a little.

I don't know but I wouldn't have them in the house unsupervised for today. It might get ugly.

I don't know about your dogs, but my best friend used to eat raw hamburger... She'd start to cook something and would take a bit of it, raw, right out of the package. I could hardly believe it. I'm not sure if she still does it now or not, with all the hype about e-coli and salmonella poisoning. I just can't imagine eating raw hamburger....makes my stomach turn just thinking about it.

IRON stomachs...I had to come to work, so they will be unsupervised (with the garbage taken outside of course!). My sister's dog has eaten some amazing things and never got sick.

If they have iron stomachs then I wouldn't worry. We used to have a dog that would get sick from anything wierd he ate. Also we had another dog that could eat a kleenex box and be fine.

I used to feed my youngest pug a modified BARF diet. BARF, in this case, stands for Bones And Raw Food. Yes, you can feed your dog raw bones and raw meat. It is actually very healthy for them.... well, hamburger is at the bottom of the list because of the amount of fat in it, but other meats are good for them.

I have read many, many dog nutrition books because Prancer is allergic to everything on the planet. I even developed my own kibble recipe. My vet has passed this out to other clients for their dogs.

Believe it or not, dogs can eat poultry bones if they are raw. The marrow is very nutricious for them and the bones themselves have alot of calcium. It's also good for their teeth.

The only time you'd have to worry about them eating raw meat is if they have very weak stomachs that don't tolerate anything outside of what they are used to eating.

If someone is feeding a modified diet, like I was, they should feed kibble for one meal, like breakfast, and then raw meat for dinner. The two don't metabolize the same way and the nutritional components are absorbed better if eaten separately.

I never got into the raw bones, though, because of Prancer's size, I was afraid that the bones could hurt her if a piece lodged in her system somewhere. Others feed them without reservation.

Glad to hear that they enjoyed their feast and their systems didn't fight them over it.

Last week my beagle got into the garbage in the garage and ate 3 raw chicken breasts that I had thrown out since they were old.

Totally grossand I was so worried about him getting really sick.
Nothing happened.

You just never know how these critters are going to react!.

Good luck,

Herc.

Ill admit it...I used to eat raw hamburg all the time. Believe it or not, it actually tastes good. Now that Im older and wiser, I dont do it anymore, but I was always ok with it. ;)
In fact I just finished making meatballs and my instict while mixing was to grab some to eat it, but I stopped myself.
