Should I bring my tripod on a cruise?

Has anyone else brought a tripod with them on a cruise? I'm trying to debate whether I will regret leaving it at home. I mainly want it for low light shots and to capture some shots with longer exposure times.

Any thoughts from past cruisers who have taken one onboard? Thanks!!

I brought mine and carry it when I am wandering the ship at add hours I packed it in our larger suitcase and had no problem with it. Careful though the porters at Cape Canaveral are not very gentle with luggage!

Murphy's Law-if you bring it, you won't use it and if you leave it at home, you'll wished you had brought it. If you use it often at home, then bring it. Do put it in your checked luggage though as opinions of what is allowed by the TSA vary from one agent to the next.

I think I'm going to bring a GorillaPod for my April cruise. Realy just want to be able to get some wide angle interior shots; either real early in the morning or real late at night.

I used my tripod at all its limits, up and down, theres no real way around it. A gorillapod doesn't really handle the weight of a DSLR and a heavy lens, at least for very long they wear down quickly. My head stripped after less than a dozen uses, it just wouldnt stay tight enough. Its warranty replacement is still in my storage room in the packaging...

I am an annual cruiser, ever since 1983...ever since I've gotten into photography, I've brought a tripod on my cruises. Taking interior ship shots is always best at night, and always best at low ISO and a long shutter speed, so tripods are the key. I also enjoy taking shots off the ship at night - scenics in ports where I'm staying late, shots of the ship at the dock lit up at night, etc. I say always bring the tripod if you have the ability to, unless you don't take those kind of shots.

I would suggest you bring your tripod, I have used mine on cruises before and it was very beneficial. If you don't want to carry a large tripod with you try a gorillapod as suggested in these posts. I brought it with me on my last Disney trip and it was phenomenal.

Which version of gorillapod did you have? I am using the 'Focus' which is designed for video cameras, its a size above the DSLR Zoom and haven't had any problems thus far. It is rated at about twice the weight of my D5000 with 55-200mm lens (if I remember correctly). This one is made of metal and is more robust than the other models which is why I went with it.

The DSLR Zoom works well too, just got one last month w. ballhead and it has been great. It is a nice extra to have with me. I picked it up primarily for tabletop food shots as it is less obstructive than a full tripod at a resturant table.
