Hi,

I went up to a local beauty spot with my wife and daughter last night - to see if we could catch the super big moon as it came up over the horizon - it was a really cool sight as it came up over the trees - a big orange moon which gradually turned white as it climbed into the sky.

Just peeping over the tree line......

No offense but there are multiple threads that cover many topics. Do you go in and sound an alert in each and every one, or am I just special?

Did you post yours anywhere? I want to see! I just turned 31 on 3/7 :)

Love it coming up over the horizon...I didn't think to go out early enough to catch that. I'll catch that next time around in 2029! :lmao:

No, it has been a special concern of ours on this board. Our moderator has many other things in his personal life to do than going into the board to combine threads on the same subject. The thread on this was only about four threads down when you created this new one, so it is not like it was not visible. If you didn't see it, then you didn't look. I am not trying to start some conflict with you. There is just no need to get multiple threads going on one VERY specific topic when there is already one with multiple pages going.

I just noticed that you have been a Disboards member for one month. You could not possibly know how we like to keep things around here after that short of a time period. I have been a regular here for many many years. We always welcome new people around here and I was clear that I was not being rude. I was trying to be polite, but you obviously took offense to that.

Saying "no offense" does not automatically decrease the rudeness of a statement, in case you were wondering.

Being that there are clearly multiple threads on the same topic all over the Dis boards, it did not seem inappropriate to have TWO whole threads with pictures of the moon. In fact, it still doesn't seem inappropriate.

Further, how can you expect anyone to know the details of a moderator's personal life? How should I know whether one moderator has all the time in the world or if they have barely any to spare? I'll answer for you, I wouldn't know that.

Posting a thread on a topic that is already floating around is a really silly thing to call someone out on.

You are obviously a confrontational person looking for a fight. You will not get that from me. I explained exactly why I was informing you that there was already a thread on this and why we try to keep down the multiple unnecessary threads. You do not have an enemy in me, but I am done with this. I look forward to productive input on our forum from you.

Actually I am just a person that took a few pictures, liked the results and wanted to share them. The most productive input you could come up with was to criticize the fact that I made a thread. I just looked and there are currently 2 threads about camera bags on the first page of this forum, I sure hope you remembered to chastise someone for that.

Alright fine then since you asked. The first shot is either out of focus or somewhat blurred from camera shake. I like the concept of the other two shots, but you didn't execute well. Neither the moon nor the foreground is in focus. It doesn't look like camera shake on it that caused the blurring. I really like the idea though.

Yes, it was definitely camera shake at play in the first. I did these hand held, as I didn't think to go out and take pictures until it was already the middle of the night (and cold out). Thank you for your comments.

Well...I like the photos! Did the same thing-photographed focusing on trees and thought they turned out pretty good! Love Millys orange moon...I missed the orange color trying to get to a spot with a good view! Oh well...just have to wait 19 years to see it again and now I know where to go! :lmao: :tink:

hey don't fight, take it easy guys! :)

(off topic, merbobear, I'm a bit younger than you then, I'll turn 31 in June)

ok, back to the topic

Yes merbobear, I did post the pictures in the thread of the Super Moon that was already started (ehem... by me actually). I didn't want to post them in your thread because I didn't want to trouble the moderators so I just limited myself to reply to your post ;)

Here are the pictures in case you want to see them and in case anyone wants to give me ideas or opinions about them. I was hoping someone would comment on them since I've had my camera for just 15 days and I'm learning to shoot in manual but... nobody did, everyone started posting their pics in YOUR thread instead :lmao:
It's obvious that I probably got many disers bored and got ignored lol :lmao: (just kidding here! ;D)
:grouphug:

anyways here they are :D

I took more pictures but those are the best ones I got having in mind the composition, exposure, the rule of thirds, blah blah ;D

I started the other thread to ask for advice prior to taking the pictures and everyone gave me their view on the subject of moon shots, good ideas, and great advices. I couldn't have been able to take a pic of the moon if it weren't for you guys so thanks a lot!

m-tinkerbelle, you did a great job with these photos, especially since you had only had your camera for 15 days. These were very tough photography conditions.

I really like your 1st photo, where you combine the moon in the background with the foreground castle(?) and water. I can see that this was a pretty tough exposure. On the one hand, you could have made the photo darker so that details from the moon would have been more apparent, but your foreground would have been completely black. On the other hand, you could have made the photo brighter so that the foreground castle & water would have shown up better, but the moon would have been "blown out" over-exposed. What you did was sort of a nice in-between exposure.

As you get more experience in nighttime photography, I wonder if you could take 2 different photos and then combine them into 1 GREAT photo using Photoshop. Keep the camera on a tripod so that both exposures "line up". I would take 1 photo that's brighter so that the foreground comes out (you'd probably use slooowww shutter speeds, perhaps a few seconds). And then take a 2nd photo that's darker (using a FAST shutter speed) so that the details of the moon come out. Bring both into Photoshop to combine them into a new fantastic photo!

Just a thought. Great job! :thumbsup2

wow thank you very much for your post! I'm very glad how that picture came out (i took near I don't know like... 50 photos of the same composition lol) still, this one was one of the first pics I took. It's the Torre del Oro (Tower of Gold), it was once an almohad prison and later a storage for all the metals brought to Europe from America). It's in Seville, Andalusia here in Spain. :)

It was handheld so I couldn't take two exact same pictures. Still, I had my elbows rested over a handrailing for more stability. My hands were still too shaky :lmao:
it was ISO400, f/4.5, 1/10 aperture
unfortunately my camera doesn't have bracketing, but I thought it was useless to grab a camera that had it because there's photoshop to do the same job, and I believe there are other software options specially designed for HDR (?:confused3)
still yes, i think i can make it a lot better with photoshop. I did take some other pictures that had the moon less bright, or the foreground lighter but this one is the one i like the most because it's exactly what my eyes were seeing at the moment :D
I really do need to get a tripod! when i bought the camera I didn't intend to make photography one of my main hobbies but that might change lol :lmao:

the only trouble with this picture? (apart from my lack of skill)... I forgot to shoot it in RAW!!!:scared1: I had changed the settings to fine JPG the day before because I had ran out of space in the SD card and forgot to change it back to RAW :cry :sad2::guilty:

thank you for your comments I appreciate them a lot, I learn a lot from you guys :D

Well I had put some of my March 18 supermoon shots in the other supermoon thread, but since this thread seems to be higher up now, I did go out again on March 19 to get a few more shots of the supermoon at apogee. Taken with my A550, Tamron 200-500mm lens at 500mm, with Tamron 2x teleconverter (1000mm optical, times 1.5x crop factor from the camera, total equivalent 1500mm):

Here was the March 18 version:

Anyone ever try to do an HDR of the moon? It's something I've contemplated ... the moon moves in the sky, of course, but as long as the longest exposure is short enough to avoid any motion blur, using Photoshop's "Align" feature should produce good results. I haven't tried it partly because my longest lens is 200 mm, and I think I'd want at least a 300 to get the moon large enough in the frame.
