Hey all. So I have had my Canon 50D for 2 years now and just love it. I own a 50mm 1.8 prime lens and a 17-85 4-5.6 zoom lens. I have never brought my camera on my trips to Disney cause of the inconvenience of the weight and having to switch between the 2 lenses, for either wider shots, night shots, etc.
I am going to be renting a good lens for the next trip and will finally bring my camera with me. I can rent an "L" series for a total of $100 including shipping back and forth for my trip. So I ask all of you, what Canon lens would you recommend as a universal, great in low light/dark and decent range walk around lens I can use for the entire trip.
I have been looking at these. Let me know what you all think or any other recommendations:
Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS
Canon 24-105mm f/4L IS
Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L
Thanks!

It really depends on how you shoot. Given what you have I'd personally be inclined to go with the 24-105 f/4. But some would go with the 24-70 f/2.8 for the speed you gain. Either way, keep in mind those L series lenses are really, really heavy compared to what you've got. If you've never held one, do that and make sure you're good with the weight.
I used an older 28-105 f/3.5-4.5 most of the time on my last trip and it worked very well for my style. It's mid-level and not L series, but it also doesn't weigh a ton which is a huge factor for me when I'm toting it around all day.

That's a really good point. I forgot about the weight of L lenses. I have never held one (I never wanted to even get to close to one without being able to afford it :rotfl:)
I'll have to go and check some out. Maybe the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS will be best I would lose a little range but gain the speed and still have IS.
I generally don't like to zoom too much in shots I take. Then again, I have never shot anything at Disney World, so I don't know what to expect. I want to be able to take great hand-held low light shots as well as I won't be lugging around my tripod to the parks.
Thank you for your opinion!:thumbsup2

Those look great rdunative! Did you not find the 70-200mm too long on the cropped body sensor? I feel like I would maybe have complication with tighter, in close shots.

Not at all. I think you will be fine.
I just picked up the 5D Mark II but haven't had a chance to use it on it. I'll let you know how it goes. = )
The 70-200 will be too long for general shots. The shots posted earlier showcase where it does come in handy...namely when shooting characters/stage shows from a distance. When shooting the general environment, you'll want wide angle. Get the 17-55mm as it is the best compromise between speed, IS and range.

awesome! Thanks. I will def have to try it out, but thats what I was thinking. Wide enough on the cropped body sensor and gives me a little leeway if did minor zoomed shots

you've gone two years without a telephoto?
the Canon 17-55IS would be the best all around lens for a crop model

Haha yea. I've only rarely been in the situation where I wanted/needed a telephoto. Plus this is just a secondary hobby of mine so financially I'd rather save the money for lenses I'd use more often than not.

I have a variety of lenses, but that 17-55 f/2.8 was on my camera 95% of the time. At Disney, I have found the wider the better. There's just always more I want to have in my shot.
And the quality of that lens really does live up to its reputation. Granted, I've never shot with an L lens, but the speed and wide angle of this lens would balance that out for me at Disney.
