ETA what would a TR from me be without a long winded OP?

Jump right to my second post if you want to just see the pictures!

Trying to think of how I want to do this. I think I’ll approach it primarily from a photography standpoint.

Background: last trip 2009, which was first trip using a dSLR, an Olympus E510. That trip was a bit hairy (basically due to my inexperience), but I did get some nice shots, ultimately. You can read about it here (http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2080861&referrerid=70088).

Over two years, lots of experience, and a camera upgrade later – now using an Olympus E30 – I was much more comfortable this trip knowing what I needed to do to get the shots I wanted. I had a few :scratchin and “duh” moments, usually when I was distracted by the kids and/or otherwise not fully concentrating on photography, but fortunately, they were pretty few and far between.

Uggh. As before, I once again forgot the darn tripod at home! :headache: This was discovered the first night we arrived and I mentioned to my DH, “can’t wait to get out here with the tripod”. This was him :scared1: lol. He’d done me a favor packing my photography equipment along with all the electronics (trade off: I took care of all the planning and most of the clothes packing). But it was my own fault for not making sure it came with us. I’d also wanted to take the monopod and that wasn’t packed, either. But alas, I was able to run to WalMart to pick up a cheap tripod. Thankfully they had one. (Bonus was that I was able to pick up some cheap Disney souveniers for the kids’ friends back home, as well as a bottle of Diet Ginger Ale for myself which you seemingly cannot find anywhere in Disney!)

I brought most of my equipment because I knew there would be times I’d need something and would have been frustrated not having it. I brought both camera bodies and most of my lenses: a Sigma 25mm f/1.8, and Olympus lenses - a pancake 24mm f/2.8, a 14-54 f2.8, a 50-200 f/2.8 (for savannah view AKL room only), and an 18-180 f/3.5 . My plan was to use both bodies, with DS13 carrying one, and myself carrying the other; with a prime and a zoom for each, depending on lighting conditions and landscape, etc. And I was pretty proud of myself with that plan, lol. I also brought my FL 36 flash, which did come in handy, and the rest was batteries, cards and such.

Well I went to get the 18-180 to put on my son’s camera as his walkaround, and lo and behold, we left that at home, too. :rotfl2: Fortunately, friends of ours were joining us at WDW later, so they were able to get the lens for me and gingerly transport it down there. On arrival, friend took it right out of his carry on bag, handed it to me, and said, “I’m so glad to be rid of this thing”. :rotfl: (As it turned out, we didn’t use it much after all, as after a day or two, DS lost interest in both picture taking and videotaping, for which he’d even bought his own video camera. I guess it’s to be pretty much expected with kids. This was the first trip that we’d made them completely carry ALL their own stuff and he was getting overwhelmed with it all, as even us organized, motivated adult folks do at times. He did do some shooting later on with the E30, but he was way more interested in riding rides and running around with his sister and their friends than taking pictures. To complicate matters, DH brought and planned to use our Canon S3IS, but he wound up using the E510 most of the time, which actually made more sense. Why deal with blurry pictures when we have what we need to get decent ones?)

A little embarrassed re-reading here at my seeming incompetence, :lmao: but I think things really did get better. Again, this was my mistake for not communicating better with my DH if he was nice enough to pack my stuff for me. Live and learn. The more important point was that I felt, at least, that I, for the most part, knew what I was doing.

A word, once again. about camera bags and carrying equipment. Last trip I had a Crumpler 6MDH and that was really uncomfortable and awkward walking around the parks. This time I brought along the Slingshot 100 (for DS, which he didn’t use, preferring his sports pack) and the Slingshot 302 (for myself). I like the 302 because, along with my equipment, there’s room for my travel wallet and phone, girlie essentials, and I’m sure I could have even stuffed a light jacket in there if I needed to, which allowed me to forego the pocketbook and just deal with the - albeit heavy - camera bag. I saw a lot of people walking around with Slingshots (and I also saw a few with the WalMart version, which I’d noticed that night at the store  ). I did find the Slingshot heavy, but not awkward at all. The sucker is solid. Most people I noticed carrying them mainly over their shoulders, as getting on and off rides and going into bathrooms, shows, and through turnstiles, bag checks, etc, made it seem almost silly to put it all the way on. (When I did, it was off within minutes.) Even the big one, however, fit very easily on rides (ETA with the exception of Soarin), the biggest difficulty being getting in and getting your feet on either side of it - gracefully! We saw no rain, but it was good to know that the Slingshot had a rain cover if need be. The 302 also has a tripod holder.

Although I really, really love my camera and lenses, I said to my family on several occasions, “I really need to think through this whole camera thing, at least on trips to WDW”. As much as photography is one of the best parts of a trip for me, it got pretty tedious at times shuffling all the stuff around and digging for and changing lenses, etc. I’ve been thinking about getting an Olympus PEN and that might wind up being the way I go, but I have to say I developed a re-newfound love for my E510 this trip as it seemed so darned easy to operate and light compared to the more complex and larger E30. But I think I would really miss the feel and sound of a dSLR, especially after working so hard to learn the skills to use one over the last few years, so basically I’m not going to make any changes at this point and will continue to search for answers to this dilemma as time goes on. (I might wind up selling the 18-180 and picking up a 12-60 f/2.8, which is supposed to be a great lens, or maybe I'll invest in some fast m4/3 lenses, not really sure yet.) I did see one person using a PEN with a large lens and it did look kind of funny! DH wants me to mention we did commandeer an abandoned stroller one night near 3am as our shoulders were just about broken. pirate: It was so nice to have, lol!

And oh, in Grouchoesque form, I’ll give my little dSLR sightings around the parks report. Mostly Canons, some Nikons, one white Pentax, no Sonys and no Olympuses, other than the PEN. I was surprised at the sheer number of Canons I saw, mostly beginner cameras with kit lenses, as I think ukcatfan also reported recently, and many walking around with the built in flash up.

I know people are anxious for pictures but I have to go grocery shopping and take DS to baseball practice tonight, then I’ll try to get some up.

Something that absolutely plagued me on my last trip was crooked landscapes that caused me an awful lot of work to fix in pp. Happy to report that that is one area I’ve improved on greatly since then. And although I took a lot of pictures, I had far fewer throw aways than I’d had in the past. To me, those two things alone are real progress!

Oh, and a special little note to our favorite girl annewjerz :stir:

... didn’t I say payback would be forthcoming on that nice little thread you started for me a couple of weeks ago? Ha!!!!!!!!!!! I had a lot of fun getting you back!! popcorn::

Can't wait to see some shots!

I always struggle with the same thing.... My desire to have the gear to get the great shots (OK.... at least to attempt to! :lmao:) balanced with my desire not to carry around a 25 pound backpack!

I'm looking forward to seeing your pictures! I hear you on the size and weight issues and I just did what you're thinking about doing. When I got home this afternoon, the UPS truck was in my driveway delivering my E-PL2!:yay: It's still in the box however, since I had to drive up to Cincinnati and back tonight (4 hours roundtrip) and now I'm too tired to get it out.

My reasons for getting a PEN: My E600 is a lot smaller than your E30, but most of the time the 12-60mm is on it (which I love) but it makes the camera quite a bit heavier and larger. DD8 and I are traveling to London over spring break (she'll turn 9 while there) and I need to travel light since DH won't be with us to help keep an eye on things. And I do want video, although I don't think I'll use it that much. I've even decided to forgo a camera bag this time and see if it'll fit in my backpack.

I tend to forget things too, so don't feel bad. I left my camera on the plane when we went to London in 1993 and left a scarf on the plane on the way back. In 2004 we took a Disney cruise and spent 3 days at WDW afterward for DD's 2nd b'day. Somehow my camera bag with a camcorder, film p&s and digital p&s inside, disappeared at the airport after the trip, even though there were 5 of us to watch it. So I think I need to pare things down quite a bit to be on the safe side.

I can't think of anything right now other than that it's quite heavy when loaded! There certainly is plenty of room, and I'd rather have too much room than not enough.

We woke up bright and early and were pleasantly surprised to finally get to see our view from all those windows we had.

And a beautiful view it was! :cloud9:

I left these pretty much as they were shot, but keep in mind it was dawn and I was shooting through a window. (I should have shut the bathroom door as you can see it's reflection in the window. IIR I got some others another day and did remember to shut the door then, I think!)

You'll also note (if not here, then in other pics to come) that Tower of Terror had scaffolding on it for painting, and there was a crane next to it as well.

I went through the same process in December and decided to buy a Sony NEX-5 and leave my Canon 7d at home - it was nice carry around a really small camera, got some good pics too, but I felt I lost out on speed (my fastest lens was a 2.8). I missed the control I had with the Canon. I'm facing a different dilemma than you, with two competing lens systems for my money - it will get more difficult later this year when some real nice Sony lenses come out.

Subbing too and looking forward to your TR

I'll be interested to hear what you decide and how it goes for you. It's probably a little easier for me given they're the same brand and can work together fairly easily. I imagine I would still bring a dSLR but just not lug it around everywhere - probably throw the PEN in my purse at times I want to travel more lightly, like when going to the pool and such (which is sort of what I ended up doing with my older dSLR, with the pancake on it - just threw it in my purse. I really like that camera but the sensor on the PEN has the same sensor as my E30, which I find is improved over the sensor in the 510, with better dynamic range and better high ISO capability. It would be a lot easier to just keep the 510 as backup, which I may very well do. I guess I just have to really study how the pics came out with it. Thanks for helping me think it through!).

BTW, how much did you miss your dSLR from a purely ergonomic/fun standpoint? Do you think that some of the difficulty you had with it could just be, in part, that it's "new" for you, and that maybe it'll perform better as you get more time in using it?

You hit the nail on the head - as you know - lens investment far exceeds the cost of the camera; you would have an easier time and justification if you can get lenses that would fit on both bodies and work fully. I could always get adapters for my Sony but lose autofocus and auto iso - doesn't work.

I think not being as familiar with the camera as my 7D was an issue - I had the NEX-5 on a Blackrapid strap and kept the flash and pancake in my cargo shorts pocket - it was a little liberating not having a bag. The NEX has a really cool Panorama feature built in and I used that a lot. I didn't take a tripod either - so I knew my night shots would be limited. It was December and crazy cold (I'm a New Englander too, no stranger to below freezing) - so that was never really an issue though.

I'm trying to decide what I take on my Dream cruise in April. Leaning towards the NEX again - but may take my 7D with one really fast prime lens as well.

Congrats on pulling the trigger, Lynn! :goodvibes Can't wait to hear how you like it and to see your pictures. What lens(es) did you get with it?

Thanks Linda! I just opened it up and already I'm loving it, even though I haven't taken a picture yet! I had charged up my extra battery for the E600, but it has 3 contacts whereas the one for the E-PL2 has 4. I found some posts on dpreview that says you can use the old one in the E-PL2, but I'm wondering what the 4th contact is for?:confused3

I just got the kit lens right now. I debated on getting the 40-150 too but thought that might defeat my purpose in getting the PEN. Portability is what it's all about! It fits perfectly in my new Vera Bradley backpack and the body with the lens attached will even fit into the lens bag for my 12-60 for extra protection. The m4/3's 14-42 is MUCH smaller than the 4/3 version.

If I'm really happy with the pictures, I'll get the adapter to use my pancake and the 50mm f/2 with it.

Great pics so far!

OK, you've waited long enough! I haven't finished uploading yet, but let me start with a few here.

I should probably note that I'm pretty much a minimalist. I strive to get pics right in camera, and I do minimal post processing because it's not something I really enjoy or care to spend a lot of time on. I also don't normally shoot during noontime sun, so I hadn't thought to pick up a polarizing filter, which might have come in handy as I unexpectedly found myself in WS at pretty much the worst possible time of day to shoot. :headache: But it's ok, I had a lot of fun anyway!

I did have a little fun with this one in pp to accentuate these great colors! (One of the great things about doing your own pictures is taking those personal liberties with them however you like. My DH and kids gave me their opinions on some of these when I was :scratchin :surfweb: )

I know! You're not really sure whether to attempt to shoot them or to try to just completely ignore them, lol. These particular birds (? ibis or something like that - we have nothing like them around our way) used to scare my DD when she was little to the point she would cry if they came near her, so it's still kind of a running joke in our family and I will take the time to shoot them if I think I can get a decent shot in order to throw a couple into the scrapbook.

Thanks!

OK, I found the MIA and went back and added them - two in Mexico and one in China.

Sorry for the delay, but I figured I better do ALL of each day at a time or I'd never get back to do them! :lmao: This way I can do my TR and our family albums at the same time.

BTW, I intended originally to post just my "best" shots, but if people are enjoying them, I'll throw in the ones that might be rather ho-hum, too.

I know I love "visiting" WDW vicariously through others' photos, too, even if it's just for a few moments. :goodvibes

Have you ever noticed when you're doing these photos for TRs there's always some sort of fly in the ointment with your workflow? What is it about that?? :confused3

Geez! :rotfl:

OK, here we go. First off, a little shout out to my DH...

For some reason, pirate: my DH loves this pickle tree and always wants a picture of it, lol. (Maybe it's a guy thing? Ha!)

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y69/paulandlinda/P2177559-2.jpg

He also took this pic while I was in the ladies room, he especially liked the little gecko on the rock!

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y69/paulandlinda/P2177564-1.jpg

And I'm throwing this in there for those who've had tweens and young teens 'cause I know you'll appreciate the :stir: that DH and I dreamed up.

Our kids were nowhere to be found when we saw Snow White posing for pics. He and I both had the same thought at once - Ha! We'll get a pic with just us with Snow White and they'll be :headache: that they missed out (not really, I'm sure, but it was our first thought and it sounded good at the time!).

Just as we head toward the line for Snow White, she begins walking away.

Nooo!!!!!!! She can't go!!!

So DH (who bears somewhat of a resemblance to Pro Wrestler George 'The Animal' Steele and is normally pretty quiet and reserved), goes RUNNING towards the princess yelling, "Snow White, Snow White, Waitttt"!!! :lmao:

Well as you can see, thankfully I don't think Snow White heard or saw him. Cause if she did, she probably would have been petrified!!:scared1:

I was laughing so hysterically I was unable to even get a front shot of Snow White, then we laughed about it for the rest of the day (and I have tears streaming down my face just remembering it here!). :rotfl2: Therefore this picture will just HAVE to go in our scrapbook. (Kids, of course, are like :confused3 :confused3 )

Ah, the joys of parenthood...

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y69/paulandlinda/P2177558.jpg

I'll put these in with my DH's grouping as well, since he's the one who spotted the dog and simply had to go over to inquire about him (obviously we're lovers of the breed and were missing our own GSD at home). They work for Disney, and I just love the little Disney "badge" the dog has on. (As you can tell, he wanted no part of us, which is really how a good working GSD should be - i.e. tolerant, but wary of strangers). None of us can remember his name right now, if anyone knows him, refresh our memories if you would.

Around the Dolphin

Our room was in this building

Around where the top of the farthest palm tree on the right is. Health club is on the bottom

Essentially the same view, with and without landscaping. (Which do you like better?)

After I did the last pics, I started feeling really sick, and have been out of commission for a few days now. Tested positive for Influenza A/H1N1 last night. I can't help but wonder if I picked it up on the plane ride home, people two rows in front of me were hacking most of the flight. :guilty: I did have a flu shot this year, too.

Around the shops (some of my favorites are at the Studios)...

DD is a big Remy fan, especially given she was missing our hamster, Gus.

We bought one of these for both DD and for her friend watching Gus for us.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y69/paulandlinda/P2187849f.jpg

(Of course, DH couldn't resist the urge to tease her about it when she pretended to get weepy thinking of him. :lmao: )

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y69/paulandlinda/P2177623-1.jpg

DH is a huge Carl Frederickson fan! We actually bought this sketch, which was really nice (and I thought very reasonably priced!).

I got a matching Mickey Mouse, "It Was All Started By A Mouse" one, in blue (guess that helps determine the colors we'll be painting our bedroom soon, lol).

They arrived at our house the day after we got home. :lovestruc Nice way to spend our Disney Rewards...

Our touring plan was messed up when we discovered on arrival that RnRC was temporarily shut down. We wound up on TGMR - one of my favorite attractions - sort of haphazardly. This must have messed me up because I found myself futzing with lenses and settings while in the moving line (and I think I missed a couple :rolleyes1 ). I had no idea how they were going to come out. Thanks to my Sigma, I was able to get a few keepers, though I think many of them aren't sharp enough, for example. I'm suspecting my focus was off, and probably my metering. I'm going to have to strive to do better here next time - thoughts are welcome.

Thanks! Remy is one of my favorites so far!

It seems I'm usually in the front car for some reason, so it was fun to get a shot showing the front cars, which comes in handy when you're explaining how the "ride" works to people who've never been to Disney!

Isn't that Casablanca scene behind a soft screen anyway?
This shot was from the montage at the end, and I believe we'd just started moving? I didn't intend to get that, necessarily (I was aiming to get anything, actually, as I've never really gotten a decent shot there, which was somewhat of an accomplishment this trip, I suppose), it just happened to come up. (Those images go by so fast!) I was unable to get a decent shot of the Casablanca scene earlier in the ride this trip. The whole thing was fun to shoot!

Loving your pictures. I wish my DH would hurry up and load my pictures from last week onto my computer. He laughed that I filled up my card. He acted like it was such a huge one. He told me to go to the camera shop where he bought his new Canon T2 DSL and tell them that the card they sold him was too small. He is so hilarious.

Your pictures are making me rethink staying at the Boardwalk in May.

Right now I have a room reserved in BOTH a Beach Club regular room and a Boardwalk studio on points.

I gotta do something.

You like the Dolphin more than the Swan? Why?

Hope everyone is feeling better today.

And Happy St. Patrick's day. I just bought a green 3 leaf clover cake. It is cute-3 heart cutouts strategically positioned with some purple flowers.

Thank you! Appreciate the feedback!

I was hoping some of the experts could weigh in on something. How do you get, when there's "so much" light coming in around places like the Boardwalk area, the brightness of the light balanced in such a way that you can actually make out the words the lights are spelling out? (If that make sense.) Must you use a smaller aperture? :scratchin

An example of what I mean:

Tripod, low ISO, large aperture. (Actually, maybe I just answered my own question? Should it be Tripod, higher ISO, smaller aperture? No, must be tripod, low ISO, smaller aperture. Eh, I'm so confused! )

ETA uploading issues right now, stay tuned

This isn't the one I was going to use, but it's almost as good an example as the other one, which I will post when I can.

Why can I not make out the words Boardwalk in lights?

Eh, I'm so confused! )

Hi Linda....I'm by no means an expert and I certainly don't know the answer. But here's some of my shots with a similar theme.

These first two shots are handheld; taken at twilight.

ISO 800, f/2.8, 1/40 sec, 38mm. I was trying to follow the exposure time rule of at least the inverse of the focal length. I figured that it was a little over so I changed the exposure time to try to adjust. I didn't want to change the ISO and was already at the largest aperture setting; so that only left me with the exposure factor to play with.

ISO 800, f/2.8, 1/80 sec, 38mm.

At the time, I was happier with the red neon colours and I had other things to go see...so I moved on.

I came back later that night and set the tripod up. It was full dark. I had just landed that day so I was a little jet-lagged by this stage. I wish I could remember why I picked the settings I did but I suspect that I went the f-stop for depth of field reasons. I also wanted to shoot at ISO 800.

ISO 800, f/14, 8 secs, 33 mm.

Completely overblown the lights. I knew I had a few seconds too many exposure wise - so that seemed the most logical setting to play with.

ISO 800, f/14, 1.6 secs, 33 mm.

At the time and on my camera screen, I thought I could clearly see all the words and I was happy with the twinkles (I'm blaming the jetlag). When I came home and looked at the shot on my PC, I wish I had taken the time down a couple more stops.

And also to share my shots for changing ISO....this was taken the next night at DCA. I was there to see the World of Colour and didn't have the tripod because I had read that you weren't allowed to set up tripods in the viewing area.

I was also after "neon" for the scavenger hunt.

Hand held, I went with the largest aperture setting and bumped the ISO right up.

ISO 3200, f/2.8, 1/200 sec; 45 mm.

I decided to play with the ISO setting:
ISO 1600, f/2.8, 1/200 sec; 45 mm.

http://i816.photobucket.com/albums/zz82/PrincessInOz/2011%20Jan%20California/Learning/USAHolidayJanuary2011650.jpg

I thought the "Pan Pacific Food" wording was clearer.

And I moved dead center for this shot...

ISO 1600, f/2.8, 1/200 sec; 24 mm.

What did I learn?

That triangle of ISO, aperture and exposure time is an important thing in photography.....like everyone else keeps saying on the Boards. Now, if only I know how to figure it out .
On a tripod, I can use a smaller aperture setting for more depth in my pictures and play with the other two to get the exposure....I just have to remember to bring my tripod along. :rotfl:
I need to practise more (and take that basic photography course I keep meaning to take)!

Hope this helps.
