I was really back and forth on doing a trip report. But alas, we've been back for 2 months now, and I'm going through major Disney withdrawal. And with no new trip in the works yet, I'm doing what any self-respecting Disboarder would do....... I'm starting a trip report so I can relive our LAST trip!

This trip was a long time in planning. After all, planning is half the fun, right? I thoroughly relish being able to anticipate and plan the entire year leading up to a big Disney trip. My husband knows better than to ever surprise me with a last minute Disney trip. I'd be hacked off I didn't get to enjoy all that planning and anticipation!

The entire family took a road trip west last summer and it included a few days at Disneyland. But this trip was a girls only trip to the World. My daughter Katie and I are big princess fans, and we relished the thought of doing all the girly, princessy things we wanted.

The planning actually started in December 2009. My Christmas present was a down payment on a December 2010 girls trip. We had been to the World the end of September 09 and hit the record heat. I'm very heat intolerant, so I wanted to go back in December for cooler weather. All I can say is "be careful what you wish for......" :rotfl2: Let's just say..... we're now officially overdue for "just right" in the weather department!

I'm Janet. Here I am with Katie and the person in charge of all the Magic at Disney, my alter-ego.... and favorite character of all....the Fairy Godmother (And you guys thought Mickey was in charge!):

Anyone want to come along while I relive the magic?

We were there 12/11 to 12/19. So we sure were there at the same time! Let me know if you see yourself in any of my photos! :rotfl2: Which actually isn't all that crazy. I was reading another trip report from that week and picked myself out in the background of one of her shots. It really doesn't take much to amuse me!

I'm gathering some photos and hope to post our first day tonight!

I am not a princess hater. I love them in fact, but no one else in my family does. My DD 10 has outgrown them and the rest of my family is boys:sad2: I'm thinking in a few more years my DD will rediscover her love for them and maybe my boys will discover them too;) It wasn't my post over on the Princess Tea Party thread, but a princess tea party sounds fun! I just got back from a trip in January (note the ongoing trip report). I'm not headed back until probably next January:sad2: Thanks for the party too:goodvibes

I must have seen you post somewhere else then. But as long as you're not a hater, it's ALL good!

I only mention the princess haters because I was quite surprised at the degree of hatred I saw come from some posters as they discussed the Fantasyland Expansion. One even said they wanted to puke if they saw another little girl walking around the Magic Kingdom in a princess costume. If that's the criteria, I didn't want them puking all over my trip report! :rotfl2:

My daughter is also 10. This was sort of our "last hurrah" with the princess stuff. I think she'll come back to it later too, but I wanted one last shot at princess stuff before moving along.

Like you, we have boys at our house too, almost 16 and almost 18.

I just subbed to your trip report and will try to read up when I have a minute!

ON OUR WAY: Arrival Day 12/11/10:

I watched the forecast in the weeks leading up to the trip. Orlando was having record cold, so I figured (and hoped!) it would run its course by the time we left. As our departure got closer, it started to look unlikely. I spent the last couple of days before leaving stocking up on chemical hand and foot warmers, long underwear and lots of layers!

In my haste watching the forecast in Orlando, I nearly forgot to watch the forecast at home! It turns out they were predicting a winter mix of weather the day we left. Fortunately I woke up that morning to 44 degrees and light rain. The temperature dropped steadily on our way to the airport, but not enough to matter before our flight.

We managed to get through security with no pat downs or full body scans. Katie was amused by the lady waiting for the same plane who had an adorable puppy with her. Our 10:25 flight left on time and landed in Orlando around 2.

We were happy to find a bus to the Pop Century waiting when we arrived at the Magical Express. After a quick stop at the Caribbean Beach Resort, we were on our way to the Pop. The check-in line wasn’t long, but moved VERY slowly. I then recalled the information I had seen on the Disboards about the problems they were having with the new computer system. Eventually it was our turn. They had my room request wrong, but were still able to get us what I had asked for…… a ground floor room facing the Hippy Dippy pool. That’s about the closest you can get to the food court, shop and bus stops. And after being on our feet all day in the parks, that close room would be a HUGE plus!

I had shipped 2 boxes down a week earlier. One had Christmas decorations, the other was our small pink Christmas tree. The first box was there, the tree wasn’t. So much for spending our down time that day decorating the tree! Oh well, we had lunch from the food court then decorated our window and wandered the resort taking a few pictures.

After it taking until late in the night to get luggage last time, I had hoped maybe it would show up early this time. No such luck. Fortunately we had what we needed in the carry-on bags.

UP NEXT:

.......... TONS of fun at one of the best character meals at Disney. I'll give you a hint. Katie goes dressed in green.............

Any guesses???????

That's too funny! Of course, you probably wouldn't have seen us at the POP. We were hardly ever there! :rotfl2:

Although if you saw anyone swimming in the cold weather.........that COULD have been my daughter. No .......wait....... you were in "pool avoidance" mode.... (I already started reading your TR!)....... but Katie is 10......... and less easily distracted. We knew from a prior January trip that they keep the pool water really warm. And our room was right next to the pool, so I did let her swim a couple of times.

This was our second December trip to the World. We did the same week in 08. This was traditionally the "lull" week right before the big Christmas rush. But we found it to be busier than our previous trip. There were a few times I considered it REALLY busy. But the truth is that with the discounts they run, there aren't many slow times left. With good planning though, it's still manageable.

This year remains to be seen. Remember this was previously considered "value" season, the lowest price of the year. Starting this year, it is bumped up a rate category, so the price is a little higher. And of course, no deals have been announced yet to the general public.

If you have any specific questions, let me know.

And.........

Thanks for the festive welcome... I hope we luck out and it is less busy. Though in truth my mom said we are taking a slower trip this year so crowds shoudl not matter I am supposed to walking slow and taking it all in  I told her I'd give it my best.

As per codes my mom and I both received a 40% off pin code for that time so I'm not sure if that means it will be available to the public later or not :confused3

Anywho... can't wait to hear more :thumbsup2

Well, December is a GREAT time to slow down and take it all in. So I'm sure you'll have a great time. :thumbsup2

Don't get me started on PIN Codes. I have officially given up. I think I'm on the NO PINCODES masterlist at Disney. I have tried it all....... signed up under various email addresses.......saved itineraries...... made changes........... you name it........ no pin code. I refuse to ever try again. :sad2:

Which I suppose is fine. I don't know if a return trip is in the cards. If it is, it might be west. So a PIN code would probably just taunt me right now!

What dates are you going?

YEAH! :cheer2: We have a winner! I'll update our visit to 1900 Park Fare in a moment.

The tree finally showed up the next day. It wasn't an expensive tree, but I had bought it after Christmas in 2009 just as we started planning the trip. I had read other trip reports where people had trees in their room, and I really wanted it.

I had been watching the USPS tracking all week and thought for a bit it was lost. I had mailed both boxes one week prior. The first one showed up Monday that week. This one didn't show up until Sunday. I had considered putting my tripod in that box so I would have it that first night. Lesson learned. I already knew I couldn't count on the airlines or Magical Express for stuff that first day. Now I have to add the post office to that list!

We typically go to Chef Mickey on arrival night, but decided to mix things up a bit this time. We were heading for dinner at 1900 Park Fare! I know the food gets mixed reviews, but for character interaction and fun......... it's one of the best ways to spend a dining credit! Through the years, Katie has gone to 1900 PF dressed as Cinderella, the Fairy Godmother, Anastasia and even Lady Tremaine. So going as Drizella this time was an easy choice! I told her next time she'd have to be Prince Charming! :lmao: She hasn't taken me up on that one yet.......

Here's our archive of 1900 Park Fare fun through the years:

Against my better judgment, I'll post this first one. It was from our January 08 trip. We went to 1900PF on our way to the Pirate & Princess Party:

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5092/5508071552_a0e212d8ba_z.jpg

That summer our family stopped briefly at Disney on our way back from our summer beach vacation. I made Katie one of my favorite Cinderella costumes ever. We loved this Anastasia (although we thought she was too pretty to be one of the ugly stepsisters!) She asked about Katie's costume and told me next time I should make her Anastasia. I told her that was already in the works for December:

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5257/5507472453_f2f8143e91_z.jpg

In December, Katie did indeed go back dressed as Anastasia. We were meeting friends there, and I made stepsister costumes for the girls. I was SO surprised to find........ the VERY SAME Anastasia there that night. I was even MORE surprised to find out she remembered our conversation! The girls had a ball playing with their alter egos. I was thrilled when they invited us to stay for a group photo at the end of the night:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3294/3141381579_725cc297cf_z.jpg

For 2009, Katie decided to be Lady Tremaine. At dinner we met our favorite ever Lady T. We ran into her in the Magic Kingdom later in the week and she immediately recognized Katie and invited her over for a chat!

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5258/5508074968_6eaf37f37d_z.jpg

So you can see........... it was an easy choice to go as Drizella this time!

I think they may just be my favorite series of trip pictures I have ever seen! They are so original and so awesome! I bet the step mother and the fairy godmother just loved that someone dressed like them! And I can only imagine the fun you must have had with the stepsisters that night. The group picture at the end of the night is awesome! You are one talented seamstress. Which makes me even more excited for this trip report to progresspopcorn::

ETA Oh and I forgot to mention we were there in Jan. '08 too and hit a P&P party. So sad they don't those anymore.

Many thanks for the kind words! :flower3:

I love making costumes, and with Katie now 10, this was sort of my "go for broke" trip. I had a great time over the course of the year devising new things I wanted to try. In the end, I think Katie and I both ended up having the same favorite costume for her. But that won't come up for a while........

We were really lucky to find Fairy Godmother there that night shown above. Lady T is usually there, but they had the Fairy Godmother fill in for her last minute. She was really sweet. I was having trouble with my costume. The hood kept slipping off. She said "you know........ if you just sew a little comb in the hood, it will stay in place very nicely". And sure enough..... I added one when we got home and it works great. The Fairy Godmother after all, was the original creator of Cinderella's beautiful ballgown, so I consider the "go to" source for creating costumes! And now you see why she's my favorite Disney character! :wizard:

And yes...... that night we got the group photo was the BEST! From having Drizella remember us, to having them grant us that amazing photo...... one of our best Disney days EVER!

I'm also sad they don't do the P&P parties any more. We managed to hit them on 3 separate trips. That picture above with Katie as Cinderella turned out to be the night of the very last one ever. :sad2: I'm glad we waited through and finally saw Captain Jack that time!

Katie wanted her hair curled for dinner, so I did what I had to do........ and carried the curling iron through airport security in my carry-on! Of course, there was also a hoop skirt in my bag, and I'm still surprised I didn't get any funny looks! So I curled Katie’s hair, she put on her Drizella costume and we were off to the ball........errrrrrrr...........dinner!

I had considered trying to stop into the Magic Kingdom, just long enough to see the castle lighting, then heading to the Grand Floridian for dinner. I’m glad we didn’t since all the reports on the Disboards since we returned said the Magic Kingdom crowd level was near a 10 that day! (It was the only semi-warm non MVMCP night in the forecast all week!) We arrived at the Magic Kingdom bus stop then quickly transferred to the Monorail and headed for the Grand Floridian. There was plenty of time for Magic Kingdom fun later in the week!

It seemed to take forever for us to be seated for dinner. Thankfully that was the only extended dining wait we had the entire trip, which is pretty remarkable since it was a free dining week.

As we finally entered the restaurant, Drizella saw Katie and let out a huge squeal! It was SO much fun! “It’s me! It’s me!” she yelled. Katie loved it, and we both giggled our way to our table. As we sat down, another Disboarder *toadstool* saw us and stopped by to say hi! Hey Kira! It was fun to meet someone we "knew" already. We both hang out on the Disboutiquer thread. It was fun to meet her daughter who was there dressed as Cinderella.

At one point, one of the CM’s asked to take a picture of Katie with Drizella. Turns out, he was in charge that night, and was kind enough to add a little pixie dust :wizard: at the end of the night.

This trip, I got as close as possible to Drizella's actual costume, right down to the turquoise ruffled lining! If only I'd known there were THREE ruffles......... Maybe next time! :rotfl2:

Drizella played with Katie all evening, even dragging her across the restaurant at one point. Katie loves this stuff, and so do I!

And I really liked this photo. Katie loved that I let her wear lipstick as part of the costume, and kept checking it in her spoon.

And now for our Pixie Dust: :wizard:

I scrapbook, so pictures like this are absolutely my favorite thing in the whole world! So......many many thanks to the CMs who helped make this happen! :flower3:

What an amazing start to our trip! With that we headed back to the POP. I felt like Cinderella on her way home from the ball!

I really thought we’d find our luggage in our room when we returned. No such luck, but a couple of phone calls later and it was there.

We got unpacked...... I had a few items to organize for the next day and we crashed early.

NEXT UP: Our traditional first park day.........HOLLYWOOD HERE WE COME!

We will be at Disney Dec 11-17 at the Boardwalk.

I wanted to skip Pop Warner because we too were there in 08' Dec 2-11 and I thought it was busy that time.

I think we got the pin codes because we booked the above trip with a travel agent and it had been a while since they heard from her and I. :confused3 Though I was just there with by boyfriend in September 10' so who knows

Those should be decent dates. Of course, if Disney releases a general public deal for that time, it will busy up, but not worse than any other time, and not NEARLY as bad as the following week.

And the weather should be decent. We were there that week in 08 and I barely ever needed a jacket, even wore shorts and a T to the Christmas party after dark. 2010 was a different story with record lows. That was out of the ordinary though. Typically it's beautiful and warm in the afternoons and cool enough for jackets in the evening.

I hope you have a magical time! pixiedust:

Thanks for reading along! :surfweb:

It's a sickness really......... I see costumes I like and I HAVE to make them........ and we've had SO much fun with them through the years! My favorite part has been the great response from the cast members. They work there because they love Disney too. And it's SO much fun to catch them off guard with something different!

We had tons of fun! Fortunately Katie has a good sense of humor and is really outgoing. With 2 teenage brothers, she had to learn to stand her ground!

And I would SO love to do a trip with you and Claire! But honestly........ I don't have 3 years to wait for you to get Skip on board with it! :lmao:

I sort of went nuts with the costumes this trip. But what else was I to do with myself to get in the Disney spirit while I was waiting the full YEAR for the trip? :teeth:

Thank you! Katie and I love character hunting. The costumes just add another layer of fun. I wanted this mother/daughter trip as a time we could focus just on that while she was still young enough to enjoy it. We will always love Disney and enjoy it together, but I think this stage is about over.

When the whole family comes along, we all enjoy rides together and do all the traditional stuff, but my husband and the boys just don't "get" the character thing. It was really fun to get to focus on what we wanted.

Hi Debbie! I'm Janet! And.......

:welcome:

I used to LOVE that Fairy Godmother show at the CRT dinner. I was sad when they changed it. The Fairy Godmother they had there reminded me of Paula Deen! :lmao:

I'm glad you're along for the ride! Disney over Christmas sounds heavenly! I'll have to check out your TR too!

Janet I didn't know you started a report! I have to go back and get caught up.

PARK DAY ONE: DHS 12/12/10

We left the POP shortly after 7. Our tradition is to start at DHS on our first park day, and to see the first Beauty & the Beast show of the day!

On our way out the door:

http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/mom2rtk/dhsbellepool.jpg

We were greeted at DHS by their glorious Hollywood themed Christmas tree:

http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/mom2rtk/dhstree.jpg

http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/mom2rtk/dhstreekatie_003.jpg

We were the first ones in line at DHS around 7:30, a full 90 minutes before park opening. Are we Toy Story Mania nuts? Nah. We've had really lots of luck finding magic at DHS, and we wanted to see what we could come up with this trip. In 2008, we got to be Grand Marshals in the Stars & Cars Motor Parade. I guess that would probably be our top Disney moment ever. We both still smile when we think of it!

2008 FLASHBACK:

http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/mom2rtk/paraderesize2.jpg

In 2009, we got to help open the park.

2009 FLASHBACK:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2530/3987545222_d2669d5a5e.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/28159731@N02/3987545222/)

So who can blame us for trying again? We chatted with CM's on the other side of the turnstiles while waiting for the park to open. We had a great view of them getting everything spiffed up for the day:

http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/mom2rtk/dhscrossroads.jpg

But no one ever came out to invite anyone to help open the park. About 8:45 they opened the turnstiles. So I put in the key card……….. and nothing. There we were…… very first in line…. And the tickets wouldn’t work. I immediately remembered all the stories I had read on the DIS about people with this very problem after the resort computer upgrades. We had to leave the line and go to guest relations while hundreds of people entered the park ahead of us. They appeared ready for this very problem in Guest Relations. They gave us one day tickets to get in that day, along with fastpasses to any ride in the park EXCEPT Toy Story. We’re not hard core Toy Story riders, but most people at the front of the DHS line are there to get TSM Fastpasses. Anyone else might have been REALLY steamed to give up their front of the line spot for the stampede. I wasn't thrilled, but we got into the park fairly quickly. Turns out there was no family involved with the park opening that day. I have no idea why:

http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/mom2rtk/dhsopen.jpg

Once they dropped the rope, we headed up Hollywood Boulevard, but instead of following the stampede to TSM…….. we stampeded to……… Minnie Mouse! And she looked awesome in her pink!

http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/mom2rtk/dhsminnie.jpg

We also met Donald and Daisy and Chip and Dale. The sun was out, the weather was warm. It was a great day to be at Disney!

http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/mom2rtk/dhschipdaledance.jpg

http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/mom2rtk/dhschipdale.jpg

I LOVED the vintage Hollywood costumes on the characters!

After meeting all the characters under the hat, we were off to Beauty & the Beast Theater for our traditional first show of the day!

The boys in our family hate all the girly princess stuff too. When they come along they moan and groan every time we want to stop in a character line. So I decided a mother/daughter trip was the only answer! It was sheer heaven to be able to do all of that stuff with no comment from the character haters! To pay for the trip, I gave up every gift giving occasion for the entire year and sold a bunch of Katie's old costumes. Free dining and staying at a value resort don't hurt either!

I have to say I love your DD's dress!

Well, I can tell you that our two boys are as different as night and day! They don't act alike OR look alike. It's crazy sometimes how different two siblings with the same parents can be!

Many thanks for the kind words! I don't know about homecoming and prom though. I've seen some of what the girls have worn to the boys' high school events. YIKES! I'm good at full length gowns. I'm not sure I know how to make something as short and low as I see the girls in on prom night!

Although it's funny you should mention it. We also brought 2 of Tiana's gowns along, and they were some of Katie's favorites from the entire trip. I think it's because they are strapless and more grown-up looking.

Regardless, she has put me on notice that I get to do here wedding gown one day. I told her fine...... as long as it's a LONG time away! :rotfl2:

Scrapping is my true love. I belong to a great online Disney scrapping group. You can find them here:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/scrappiestdisneyswapping/

Vanessa posted earlier in the trip report. She belongs to the group too. If you join, you can see all the albums members have posted. There's a LOT of inspiration there.

And yes, thanks for noticing Katie's stylish new glasses! She got them right as school started in the fall. Since everyone else in the family has contacts or glasses, I think she knew her days were numbered! :rotfl2: But I love the cool blue frames she chose!

So when are you going in the fall? I'd love to have a trip to plan for right now, but don't know yet what we'll do. I'd like to do Halloween so Katie and I could go in costume together, but my husband might have a conference in Anaheim in December. So I need to wait and hear on that.

Didn't you have some camera problems? How did that turn out?

Iwant2BAprincess
02-25-2011, 11:55 PM
We usually go for the heat wave special in Sept. We are from the south so the heat isn't that extreme for us.

I totally undestand about the glasses. Both dh & I wear them and our oldest got them a couple of years ago. We actually felt really bad because we hadn't figured it out on our own. He is a great ball player and couldn't hit water from a boat all of the sudden-apparently you need to see the ball to hit the ball-who knew?

Yes, I did send my camera off where they did determine the shutter was sticking and fixed it and had it shipped back within a week total time-unfortunately I am not sure the problem is completely fixed-time will tell.

Thanks for the scrappin link. I am always looking for sources of insipiration. My problem is all I want to scrap is my Disney stuff to keep reliving the trips.

Wow! I am so impressed that you made it to a park by 7:30! What a bummer that nothing special happened with a family that morning. I love the costumes on the characters at the hat too. We only got to meet Chip and Dale this last trip. By the time we finished with them all the other lines were closed. I would have loved to have met Minnie in her pink. She looks so pretty. And once again, that is a gorgeous princess dress.

I'm such a weenie in the heat. But I'm tempted to try late October sometime. I want to be able to wear costumes to MNSSHP.

I'll keep my fingers crossed on your camera. I would be beside myself!

One thing I like about that scrapbook group is that while the focus is Disney, some of the challenges are for any sort of page. And we ALL have your problem. The Disney pages are so fun to do, the rest of our pages fall behind! I did find though that after years of doing Disney pages, I needed some inspiration for new ideas. I joined the group and never looked back.

Thanks for the kind words and for reading along!

I've always been a morning person, so rope drop, or a little early, is not a huge problem. And since it was our first day there, I didn't sleep well and actually woke up well ahead of my alarm. And Katie's pretty easy to get up and going at Disney. It's a different story when the rest of the family is along!

We got through the Minnie and Donald/Daisy lines pretty quickly, then were the last ones in line for Chip and Dale. She closed it right after we got there.

Hi, Janet! It's Amy & Eve! I'm so excited to find your trip report.

I read the first page, and now, I am ready to go back and read the rest. I wanted to subscribe first, though!

We are planning a trip for this August. The heat will be brutal, but we will make the best of it. Character meals in the cool air conditioning will be a must!

Can you believe Eve will turn seven this summer? Seems like yesterday we met at the Alice in Wonderland Tea Party at the Grand Floridian, and Eve was only four, then.

I love your pictures! Katie is a beautiful princess!

Janet....your not going to beleive this....but Skips brother just hurt himself and thinks he brook his foot. He is at the hospital now. of course MIL just called and said "you may need to cancel your trip". I told her "no, Claire and I will still go". Skip also called in before his mom and said, maybe my mom might need to go with us instead, if it is bad. I told him that if it comes down to that, I'll see if Paige wants to go. Of course this totally sucks no matter what. I DO want Skip to come. And I don't know if I can change the person coming on the cruise. I guess I should go ask on the cruiseline forum to be sure, in case it comes down to that.
I swear we are jinxed!!!!

YEAH AMY made it! I just sent you a PM. I didn't even know your hung out over here! It does seem like a lifetime ago since the girls got to fall down the Rabbit hole together! Want me to dig up the photo and post it here????

I know summer works out best for you, so LOTS of character meals is a great answer. You can still have some costume fun indoors in the a/c. Your avatar photo is adorable!

Oh........ and I almost forgot.........

And as for YOU Jen............

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But GOOD for you for saying you and Claire would go anyway. I sure hope Paige could go too. A mother/daughters trip would be fun too. And I would only take your mother if she's as into the magic of Disney as you are!

I sure hope it works out that Skip can go. But after ALL this time...... you and Claire at least have to go. So are you thankful you are into the nonrefundable timeframe???????? Did you buy those nonrefundable plane tickets like I suggested??????

I'm really feeling for you this morning!

I do have non refundable. But we do have trip insurance too. But I think he knows he would be dead if we totally canceled. I found out the flight could have a name change for a $50 fee, which if we haveto we have to. Still haven't found out about the cruise though. They are kind of strict on the cruises, so not sure yet. hopefully someone will know and can tell me. I did send out a message to my TA trainer as well.

Many thanks! Katie loves the costume play. Some of the costumes were her ideas, some were mine. We love to try and stump the cast members or keep track of how many cast members can identify which costume she's wearing. Not too hard in Belle's yellow gown, but we also do the obscure stuff. Last year she had a replica of Cinderella's Parade Gown, and we enjoyed seeing who "got" it.

Through the years, we've been able to make friends with some of the cast members and they remember us from one year to the next. It has really become a game to get as many costume photos with the characters as we can so we can scrapbook them when we get home.

She kept the Belle gown on at DHS for a while that day, but the others she mostly puts on for the photos. So it looks like she wanders around all day in costume, but that's not the case. I don't mind making a fancy costume for her to wear just a few minutes as long as we get the fun photos to bring home. I keep it on her terms, and I think it's why she still enjoys it. In most of the photos, she has other clothes on under the costumes. And as cold as it was on this trip..... in some of the photos she has LOTS Of other clothes on under the costumes! :rotfl2:

Intermission's over folks! :cool1:

Let's continue on with our day!

As I mentioned, it's our tradition to see the first Beauty & the Beast show of the day, so after seeing the characters near the hat, we headed over to the theater. Katie sat down and I ran around the corner to get fastpasses for Tower of Terror. We got great seats down front and prepared to enjoy the show. Before it even started, one of the CM's came up and chatted with us. They loved Katie's gown and wanted to know if we could come to the 12:45 show to be that show's Princess of the Day. Come back you say?........... for a little dusting of Pixie dust you say??????? :wizard: Absolutely! This had actually happened on a prior trip or 2..... and sure...... we were secretly hoping it might happen this time again.

Here are a couple photos from the archives. These are very special photo ops granted to us by some kind CM'S:

2009:

And 2008:

I decided to push my luck a little and ask the CM if there was any way to get a photo with Gaston after the show. I figure I can always ask, and they can always say no. It never hurts to try. She thought for a moment then said sure. She could make that happen. YEAH! :dance3: We were both really excited and she told us what time to meet her for the next show. So we happily went on our way to do some other things.

First up.......Tower of Terror. Now, Katie and I have only done this ride once, and that was just last year. I think the only reason Katie did it was because her best friend loved the ride. We both did OK on in in our inaugural ride last year, but I wasn't really sold........ But heck, if Katie wanted to go, I'd be a good sport and do it too. We did fine on the ride, but almost in unison after the ride said we didn't want to ever ride it again. I LOVE roller coasters, but Tower or Terror just doesn't do it for me. Apparently it doesn't do it for Katie either! :lmao:

After the ride, it dawned on me that we still needed to get our Toy Story Mania fastpasses. Surely the stampede was over by then, right? So we headed down Sunset Boulevard. I also wanted our traditional photos in front of the hat. On our walk down Sunset, a couple of the Streetmosphere characters bowed down to Katie like she was royalty. Katie giggled and waved, but we didn't stop. We went on to the hat!

http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/mom2rtk/dhshat.jpg

http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/mom2rtk/dhshat2.jpg

While we were taking our pictures we noticed that our 2 Streetmosphere friends had actually stalked us over to the hat! They wanted to play for a bit. They came over and made a big deal about bowing down to Katie again. They introduced themselves as Dara Vamp and Les Manley. Katie was grinning from ear to ear, just eating it all up. It was a very fun interaction:

http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/mom2rtk/dhsdaravamp.jpg

http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/mom2rtk/dhsdaravamp2.jpg

We bid farewell to our street friends and headed over to get our Toy Story fastpasses. They were for right at 7 PM. We barely got in! Our next stop was the Animation Building to say hi to the Big Cheese!:

http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/mom2rtk/dhsmickeydance.jpg

http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/mom2rtk/dhsmickey.jpg

We had a 12:30 ADR for the Brown Derby, but decided to pass on that since we had to be back at 12:15 for the 12:45 BATB show. So we decided to grab some counter service over near the BATB Theater. Up until then, as you can see in the photos, it had been a beautiful sunny day. As we sat there eating it started to cloud over....... FAST. Those beautiful blue skies turned gray before we were done with our chicken and fries! So rather than take a chance, we quickly finished and headed for our locker, where we had stowed umbrellas and jackets. We just missed the deluge!

http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/mom2rtk/dhsrain_001.jpg

But we still had to get back to BATB theater in time! So we ducked into the shops on Hollywood Boulevard, quickly making our way to the theater, laughing and giggling as we dodged the raindrops.

We just made it in time and found our CM from earlier in the day waiting for us!

NEXT UP: There's a reason I'm still hoping Gaston makes appearances at his Tavern in the Fantasyland Expansion........

Love the interaction with the Street characters. So cute! I also love the picture of Mickey and Katie dancing! From your tease it sounds like things don't work out with Gaston. What a bummer. I'm not trying to hijack, but I though you might like this picture I took with the B&B cast during my marathon. At the time I couldn't figure out exactly who they were. Really enjoying all the shots. Your daughter is wonderful in all those dresses/costumes. You should be so proud!

Really loving all the now and then shots. We do that all the time when we make our annual pilgrimages to DL or WDW. In fact we have our own photostory/slideshow/movie that we pull out and relieve the memories. How cool is that you were the Grand Marshals at DHS!?!

Alright so I'm finally on board. You will probably notice I went back to your old(er) trip report to see some of those gorgeous nature shots you took. We are thinking of driving cross country this summer but not sure exactly where.

Howdy neighbor! I was just on my over to the summer trip report to answer your question and tell you I had decided to do one on the December trip. I'm glad you're on board!

:welcome:

On the summer trip I was shooting with the Canon Xsi. Right before this trip I upgraded to the T2i. Not a HUGE upgrade, but I REALLY love the higher ISO.

I didn't really consider this as much of a photography expedition as a mother/daughter girly trip, so while I got some shots I was really happy with, that wasn't really the focus. And given how COLD it was in the evenings, that really did mess with a lot of my night photography plans.

I think it's cool you're considering a driving trip with the family. You already know how much I recommend that. And don't give a single thought to how high gas prices are (easy for ME to say when it's not me paying, right?????) We drove to Sanibel Island FL in the summer of 08. Perhaps you remember the "summer of the insane gas prices"?????? Gas was 3.79 all the way across the country headed east then right at $4 a gallon when we got to FL. BUT......... I'm sure you know this time when your kids are the right age for car trips is short. Don't let the price of gas put you off.

And you KNOW what I would recommend, right?????? GO WEST YOUNG MAN!

I don't want to SWAY your decision.......... but:

http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/mom2rtk/gc2horshshoe.jpg

Sorry for the distraction everyone............. NO, this is not the latest attraction at Disney.......... but it's on the WAY to Disney.......... well.......... sort of......... if you're headed west and detour through Arizona........

Let me know what you guys decide to do!

I've been working on my new installment here and will have it in a few minutes!

Now...........where did we leave off??????

Oh yes......... how could I forget? We had a very special invitation to come back for the 12:45 show of BATB so Katie could be Princess of the Day ane we could get a photo with Gaston after the show! We ditched the Brown Derby, ate counter service and just made it back through the rain. But it was all worth it for a little :wizard:

As we got to the theater, we noticed it was already open, well ahead of the time they normally do that. I suppose they do that to let people into the covered seating when it's raining out. At the top of the ramp, I saw the CM who had invited us back. Before I could say a word though...... she came up to us..........

She had a really thick accent, so I'm not sure if I got this all straight. But she said she was really sorry, but there had been a problem at the 11:30 show. And here's the part that's hard to be sure of. And to be honest, I was caught so off guard, I didn't ask a lot of questions. She said either "Gaston" or "a guest" had a heart attack during the show :scared1: and they had to cancel mid-show. "A guest" makes a lot more sense than "Gaston", but honestly it sounded more like "Gaston". So she was sorry, but while we could stay and watch the show.... no Princess of the Day.... and no photo after the show. :sad2: WOW! I told her of course we understood and I was SO sorry and hoped that person would be fine.

So while we were both disappointed, our issues were obviously nothing compared to the serious health issues someone else was facing that day.

Soooooooo........ we sat down to watch the show. The confusing part was when they brought another little girl in to be Princess of the Day. I explained to Katie that she was probably the girl from the 11:30 show. Still, I do wish the CM had explained that to us. But I completely understand how distracted the CM's must have been long about then.

If anyone heard of any issues at BATB that day (12/12/10) I'd sure like to know how that turned out. We hope the issue wasn't as serious as it sounded and that they recovered.

What an odd day. In the midst of our frivolous excitement to be faced with a life/death situation was hard to process.

The show did go on. In my haste, I had left my telephoto lens in the locker, but still enjoyed photographing the show with my sorter lens. One of the things I love about Disney is that they are so accommodating of people with cameras. Their shows are SO visual....... and I love sitting there finding new ways to capture that beauty for my scrapooks:

I have sold a few of Katie's special costumes to finance extra Disney trips. But we have kept most of them for her own daughter to have one day.

What a great idea! I hadn't even thought of that part. The character costumes won't change you are set for grandmother of the year for sure! That is of course she only has boys

It was still raining after the show, so we headed for Voyage of the Little Mermaid. It felt good to get inside the theater and dry off. Apparently everyone had the same idea and the theater was pretty full. Regardless, I wanted to sit farther back anyway so I could get some decent shots without breaking my neck. Last trip Katie really wanted to sit in the front row. This time that wasn't even an option. I love that I feel like I get better at photographing this show with every trip:

Unfortunately my singing skills don't get better with every trip..... but I still have the urge to sing along. Sooooooo....... my apologies to anyone who sat near us! :rotfl:

The Great Movie Ride had the same problem as the Voyage of the Little Mermaid. It was indoors and it was still raining! The park was busy, but not crazy busy, yet there was a 25 minute wait! Still....... I saw no point in hanging around out in the rain and we got in line. Thankfully it didn't take that long.

As we exited the GMR, we noticed the rain had mostly let up. I know Katie loves the Honey I Shrunk the Kids playground, so we headed over there to be sure we caught it before it started raining again.

http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/mom2rtk/dhsbug.jpg

We still had the fastpasses they gave us after the admission problem that morning. And my FAVORITE ride in all of WDW was calling my name. Katie had never done Rock N Rollercoaster.

Here's the back story on my experience with RnR: When we headed for Disney in 09, I still had never ridden it. When we helped open the park in 09, they were supposed to drive us over there in that cute little white car for the first ride of the day. But Katie had not yet discovered her inner thrill ride junkie. When our driver in the little white car heard that, he asked Katie what she would prefer to do (anything but TSM). She chose the Great Movie Ride. So he U-TURNED the car and headed back down Sunset Boulevard AGAINST the crowd that was pouring in........ yelling all the way to the crowds to get out of the way. It was a blast! But alas... no RnR that day. Later in the trip, my husband and one of my teenage sons (the one that doesn't HATE Disney!) I got to ride for the first time with my teenage son. It was AWESOME...... and a very special Disney memory of mine!

Then last summer........ the entire family went to Disneyland and Katie did indeed find her inner thrill ride junkie. We rode California Screamin 3 times in a row (with Give a Day fastpasses) and had a BALL!

Sooooooooooo............. Katie was ready for RnR, right? We had talked about it a LOT leading up to the trip and were both really excited. Well, I think that ride on Tower of Terror earlier in the day really did her in. She kept saying no every time I suggested that ride next. After the playground, she said she'd pick the next ride as a surprise. She had me help her find Hollywood Blvd, and by then I had a hunch what she was up to. By the time we hit Sunset Blvd, I KNEW what she was up to, but I played along and acted surprised when she led me to RnR. What a sweetie!

We had fastpasses, so the line wasn't bad......... but still........ by just as we got to the loading platform............. she said she changed her mind. YIKES! What to do?????????? What happened to my thrill ride junkie???????

Now cut that out! I want her to have at least one of each! At least Katie will let me talk about what her kids will be like one day. You should see the looks the boys give me!

Well, it was just one of those things. I honestly can't complain. After all, someone's life was in jeopardy that day. So another time perhaps. But man, I hope they bring him out near his tavern once that phase of the expansion opens up!

I would LOVE a villain character meal. But I understand they used to do that for dinner at 1900 Park Fare and they discontinued it because it scared too many of the little kids. I really wish they'd at least make more of them available for meet & greets. We did MNSSHP last year and saw some, and that was great, but if you can't get there for Halloween, you're pretty much out of luck.

I've been there in 2004 my 6 year-old niece wanted to ride ToT, I was like I'll go if you want. We got right in, were in there room with the video. As soon as the lighting hit and the people disappeared I felt a tiny hand grab by shirt and start pulling. I looked down and there she was shaking here head "saying I changed my mind, aunt Erica! I don't want to go anymore!" So we wen tback outside then I had to go get back in lien while the rest of the family waited for me. The Poor thing. Needless to say she finally rode in 2008 when my mom and I took her back. I don't think she will be going again anytime soon :rotfl:

:lmao::lmao::lmao:They could not have timed that any better, we kept looking at her telling her it was over soon, but all we kept doing was going up then dropping going up then dropping. I swear it was the longest sequence in recorded ToT history, the poor thing :sad2:

OK, sorry to leave you hanging! Well, not really, but you get the point. :rotfl2:

There we were on the loading platform and Katie had gotten cold feet. So what did I do? I dug deep......... called on all my sympathetic motherly intuition........... and did what anyone else would do........... I SHOVED her into the ride vehicle and told her it would be fine! :lmao: OK, before you decide I'm a horrible person, I need to mount my defense. RnR and California Screamin are really just about the same ride. And she LOVED California Screamin. And I did what I thought was best for her........

So how did it go? I really was nervous as the ride progressed, feeling an ever growing sense of guilt......... or was that my stomach turning upside down??????? As we neared the end and I looked over at her, she asked "Is it over?" When I said that was it, she gave me a big thumb's up and said she loved it. WHEW! I hadn't scarred her for life. Well, at least not THIS time!

It was still sprinkling outside, so no photopass photographers were out, but I couldn't resist taking one of my own:

http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/mom2rtk/dhsrnr.jpg

At that point, it was time to get to the Animation Building for Character Palooza! We were not disappointed and were happy to get photos with Genie, Aladdin, Jasmine, Mary Poppins, 2 Penguins, Stitch, Pluto, Minnie, Mulan, Captain Hook, Mr. Smee and the Queen of Hearts. And all within 45 minutes! Character Palooza remains one of my favorite things at Disney. I really wish they’d do more of it.

And my favorite shot:

http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/mom2rtk/dhscharstitch.jpg

Katie had really wanted to eat at the Sci-Fi Diner this trip. Since we were supposed to eat at the Brown Derby for lunch, I didn't think I'd want another sit-down meal. But I found an ADR late in the game for dinner time at Sci-Fi and grabbed it. I figured if nothing else we could get off our feet and just have milkshakes. Well, since missing our nice table service lunch, we both enjoyed having a full dinner.

After dinner, it was dark, so we headed for our last stop of the day…….. the Osborne Lights. I knew it would be busy that night since it was EMH with no Fantasmic. It was in fact pretty crowded, but I managed to get my tripod set up a few times and we soaked in the Christmas atmosphere!

This last photo was from photopass:

http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/mom2rtk/dhsosbornephotopass.jpg

I asked Katie if she was done for the day, and she was. We did still have fastpasses for TSM, but neither of us cared enough to go do it. So we had fun picking someone in the crowd at the Osborne lights and surprising them with TSM fastpasses they could use right away!

Soon after, we headed out of the park and back to the POP. I had trouble sleeping the night before and was more than ready to call it a day.

When we got back to the hotel, I stopped in at the front desk to sort out our ticket issues. I had plans of hitting the Magic Kingdom early and didn't want a detour to Guest Relations again. It took a while, but they ended up rebooking our entire package and issuing new KTTW cards. To make up for the hassle, they gave us 2 sets of fastpasses to any WDW attraction and a taxi voucher to make up for time lost. Also as a consequence of rebooking the package, our dining credits were reset, so we got 2 extra table service meals! It was very generous, and I was happy with the way they handled it. We also got the Christmas tree and set it up when we got back to the room.

It had been a great first day. Before going to sleep, I checked the weather report one last time. I was more than a little concerned about the upcoming day. They were calling for a low in the 20's, with wind and a high in the 40's. After the record heat on our last trip, this was going to be new territory for us!

Finally caught up!!!! Things have been hectic, and the weather has not helped. Thankfully I was off Thursday so i didn't have to worry much abotu the ice. I will say I am ready fro this month to be over, it has been the LONGEST 28 days EVER! Though we did have that lovely 70 degree Thursday a couple weeks ago...

I accept your photo search challenge!!

You really should consider doing an October trip (or perhaps late September, lol). The weather really wasn't bad at all last year, plenty cool in the morning and evening!

I love all the pretty dresses. As another poster said, those of us with princes will live vicariously through you.

Boy do I understand! LONG LONG month! I think it's why I finally got off the fence and decided to start the trip report. I needed a little magic to break up the snow days!

I actually have considered an October trip, and would probably end up going that route if my husband's work doesn't take him to Anaheim in December. If that happens, we'll try to find a way to tag along and get to Disneyland. Otherwise, I'd either go late October (but be home by Halloween) or the week before Thanksgiving. That record breaking heat on our trip in late Sept/early Oct 09 really makes me nervous about that time of year though.

Thanks for reading along. I'll be looking for you in my photos too!

The really pathetic part is how much fun I had finding myself in your photo! Yes, sad but true! :lmao:

Well, if it's not a word, it SHOULD be......... especially on THIS thread! :cool1:

Time for your official..........

:welcome:

Stay tuned........... lots more to come!

I was going to tell you guys to stay tuned to see if we find our very favorite Fairy Godmother........... but since I posted her photo at the beginning of the thread........... :rotfl2: I guess that cat's out of the bag!

Ready for another walk down memory lane?

Here's our history with the Fairy Godmother:

We took our first mother/daughter trip to Disney in January 08. Since I like to make gowns, I figure the Fairy Godmother and I are sort of alter egos. So I always make sure we find her on each trip. This time, I decided to make Katie her very own Fairy Godmother costume. And I'm PRETTY sure the Fairy Godmother doesn't see many of those! :rotfl2: Then after pictures as the Fairy Godmother, Katie took off the cape for pictures in the Cinderella costume she had on underneath. Fun interaction, memorable pictures, but no more than 3 or 4 minutes.

http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/mom2rtk/fgcastlefl_002.jpg

http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/mom2rtk/fg08cindy.jpg

So 11 months later........... we return to Disney and of course must see the Fairy Godmother again. I was surprised to find the same Fairy Godmother, so we got in line. Then she amazed us both by matter of factly telling Katie how much she had grown and asked where her Fairy Godmother costume was this trip! WOW! She's good! Now granted, we were pretty "conspicuous" with Katie wearing that Fairy Godmother costume and all... but we had only seen her for a few minutes 11 months prior. I chalk it up to pure magic! :wizard:

http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/mom2rtk/fg08dec.jpg

So fast forward another 9 months and we show up again. And of course, as I said before...... we never miss the Fairy Godmother. We were excited to see it was that same one and got in line. She asked how we were........ I was prepared to try and remind her who we were...... but didn't need to. She asked us what we were doing there in September in the heat since we usually come in the winter! :worship: Man, she's good!

http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/mom2rtk/fg09.jpg

So needless to say, we looked forward to finding her on this trip again. We saw her several times and it added SO much to the trip for us! And we now refer to her as our "very own Fairy Godmother". :goodvibes Pure Disney magic I tell you! :wizard:

I'm glad she liked RnRC! I am a thrill ride addict and am hoping to turn my daughter into one. This past trip, she rode and was scared of the Barnstormer and Test Track so I'm thinking it might not be a possibility! :lmao: I love your daughter's second outfit of the day, too. What time do you get to the Animation building to meet all those characters? Is it only on non-Fantasmic nights? I've heard different things and would love to try it out this trip! You and me BOTH! :rotfl: I'm not sure there's a "right" way to turn them into thrill junkies. My oldest son has always been willing to do the big rides. My younger son is a very cautious sort who didn't like thrill rides (which is why it was so fun to take my first trip on RnR with him in 09). Eventually the only reason HE rode the big rides was sibling pressure. He knew his sister was going to start riding the big rides, so he had no choice. I knew I was taking a chance pushing her to go, but thankfully it worked out. Sometimes that sort of thing backfires.

Good luck getting your daughter to ride some more ambitious rides. Test Track is a great "big kid" ride to start with. Sometimes when you sense they are ready, but just can't get them over the hump, a small well-timed bribe is a good plan. Katie was chickening out while in line for our first try at California Screamin this summer. She had been begging all day for an outfit for her new Build a Bear, and I kept saying no. So just as she was starting to back out, I told her if she was brave and tried it once, we'd get the outfit. I'm not big on bribery, but on odd occasion, why not?

Character Palooza happens in the Animation Building at 4:50 on days when there is not a 6:30 Fantasmic scheduled. One group comes out for 20-30 minutes, then a different group comes out, then the first group comes out again.

Thanks for the comment on Katie's skirt set. My friend who posted here earlier as Scraps-of-Heaven did all the appliques and put the skirt together. I put the top together and finished the skirt. It was my favorite skirt set for this trip. It had all the princesses in their Christmas finery for appliques! (Thanks Gretchen! :worship:)

As for character palooza.......... I understand that it's PRETTY regular, but never a sure thing. We you perhaps there as they were changing parades over? I'm thinking I might have read something about the staffing adjustments there maybe impacting it for a bit. It's never for sure, which is why they don't put it on the daily schedule. But our last 2 trips we planned to be there on a non-Fantasmic day just to see the characters.

I hope you get to do this one day!

Yep! We were. It was right after the current parade had ended and they hadn't premiered the new parade yet. I'm pretty sure there wasn't a parade at HS at all. That does explain it a bit. I feel a little better now. I really thought that I had somehow missed some detail about it while reading on here OR that they actually were there and we just couldn't find them.

Oh, how disappointing. When you said you were hoping Gaston makes appearances at his Tavern in the Fantasyland Expansion I thought it was because the interaction was so good. Certainly it is horrible what happened in the prior show but the CM did not handle that well with you at all. She should have done a much better job explaining what was happening especially given there was another princess of the day in the show you went to. It must have been especially disappointing after you cancelled your lunch plans. Sorry to hear.

You did a great job capturing the BATB show even without your telephoto lens. The Little Mermaid and GMR pictures came out great as well. Which lens did you use on those? The best shot though is Katie with Stitch. That is a great capture of a fun moment. These are the kind of shots that I treasure the most with my family trips.

That Fairy Godmother story is amazing. If anyone is going to make a lasting impression on someone you and your daughter will but given the amount of people she must see it is astounding what she remembered. I agree that it is pure magic on her part.

Don't worry abouth shoving your DD on RnR, I bribe mine with tootsie rolls (once in a while) when she balks. Although, she did TestTrack and laughed so hard, it was great.

I'm loving your DD's costumes more and more, I so wish I had half your talent. She looks so beautiful in everything!

I'm glad Katie ended up liking RnRC. Good call! I love the character palooza too though when we went last summer all of my kids thought the lines were too long and just wanted to play on the silly computers:confused3 I love all of your Osborne Lights pictures! They turned out great. So now I'm excited to hear about your encounters with the Fairy Godmother on this trip!

We actually got to the Animation Building a little early, and Katie played on the computers while I sat on the floor and rested my feet. I've never encountered long lines in there, but we tend to go during the "slower" season. I'm guessing more people are catching on. With them hidden away indoors, you pretty much have to know they are there to find them.

I don't really like having the characters in the Animation Building. The background in there isn't very interesting. And the lighting is TERRIBLE! I'd prefer to have them outdoors, but the lines would be even longer.

Yep!

I think that explains it. I hope you find them next trip!

You are more than welcome. I think we made quite a team on that set. I LOVE how the top turned out!

All of this is making me want to go to Disney NOW!

I'm in. We can fly out of KCI together. Can you be here by dinner time??????

No...... wait........ you violated my first rule........ we have to have time to plan, scheme ..........and SEW!

I really did enjoy tag teaming those skirt sets. Your appliques are gorgeous!

I have never heard of character palooza! now I have another thing to add to a list of dos in the future.
It looks so fun. I was going to aks if your friend made that skirt. I looked at her sutff online and it looks similar...and I love it all and I am refraining from buying. Though I have 2 things I really am contemplating.. ;)

You hang out on the DIS but have never heard of character palooza?????? Well, that's not an official name you know........ just something Katie and I started calling it a while back. I have seen it referred to as "random pop up characters" in the Animation Building.

Sorry to make you want to go to DHS even more!

Ewww, record breaking heat? Now I'm nervous for this year! Last year was perfect, but I am not a fan of super high temps either.

I think it's awesome you found yourself in my pic! Especially since we live so close! It's a SUPER small world after all!!!

October is really hit and miss. I think the later into the month you can get, the better your odds. I think I'd like to try late October sometime. I love MNSSHP and really want to give it a try again.

Many thanks for all the nice comments. It really was an "odd" Disney experience for us at BATB that day. The CM probably could have handled it better, but I'm guessing they were fairly distracted after what happened. Fortunately Katie handled it well.

And yes, the Fairy Godmother stuff just amazes me. I think you could have picked my jaw up off the ground the first time she remembered us. It really was like "old home" week when when we went back this time. We made a big deal about finding her every day we were in the Magic Kingdom, and some days more than once!

And photography talk? You don't have to twist MY arm!

My "walk around" lens is the Canon 17-55 f/2.8 IS. It really lives up to its reputation. That's what I used at BATB. I used the Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 for the GMR. I used the Sigma 50-150 f/2.8 at the Little Mermaid. That's my longest lens unless you count the Tamron 18-270 all-in-one. But honestly, I seldom use that one any more now that I have the other faster lenses.

I was really loving the higher ISO of my T2i. Between that and the noise reduction in the LR3 program, I feel like I got to stretch myself a lot further on this trip.

Don't worry abouth shoving your DD on RnR, I bribe mine with tootsie rolls (once in a while) when she balks. Although, she did TestTrack and laughed so hard, it was great.

Thank you!:goodvibes I'm really lucky she enjoys the costumes. She has figured out over time that they add to the character interactions and have contributed to a number of special moments.

Believe it or not, I'm not big on making kids do rides they don't want to do. But sheesh....... she rode California Screamin 3 times in a row and loved it!

I'm glad your DD enjoyed TT and it only took a tootsie roll to get her on!

Doesn't it figure that my one kid who loves thrill rides hates theme parks?

WOW, I am definitely amazed at what a great seamstress you are! You are one of the most creative people I have ever seen. Your daughter is so lucky! I cant wait to start taking mother-daughter trips to the world with my little one. Love your TR, I must subscribe:love:

Loving the trip report!! I loved looking through your last photo report, so much so that we almost planned a road trip exactly like it! (We're from KC too!) But my daughter's only 2.5 and doesn't really do well in the car, so that's off for a while anyway.

I also make clothing (although NOTHING like yours), but I usually don't like the "costumey" (sp?) ones and stick to the appliqued type. However, yours are amazing! And your daughter always looks so cute!!

Can't wait to see more! Thanks!

Hi Jessica! Welcome to my trip report!

:welcome:

I've seen your stuff on the Disboutiquer thread and am a huge fan of your work. That Small World set you just posted recently is TDF! :worship: You do AWESOME work!

The road trip is something I recommend wholdheartedly. But if she's not good in the car yet, just save it for a bit.

I don't think I realized you were here in town. SMALL WORLD, isn't it????? :rotfl2: OK..... sorry about that.......

There seems to be a lot of KC folks showing up here, and I think that's great!

If you ever have questions down the road about the great westward journey, don't hesitate to ask!

Same goes for the Cinderella ones, just beautiful. :lovestruc Plus that story of your very own FG is PURE PIXIE DUST!

We're opposites, I love Tower or Terror and don't care for RRC. It lives me disoriented. Danielle loves RRC and rides TOT to please me. The rides itselft didnt' really bother her it was the GHOSTS.

Once again your pictures are fabulous! I wish I had your talent.

Yeah.... I was looking forward to some Gaston pictures too! But honestly, I just hope the story had a happy ending for whoever was involved.

And that's too funny that you're my polar opposite with RNR and TOT. I think it's the disorientation on RNR that I like so much! And tell Danielle the ghosts are the best part of TOT! It's the ride itself I'm not fond of.

Thanks for coming along, and for the kind words! :flower3:

PARK DAY 2: Monday 12/13/10

OK, another day, another scheme, right? :lmao:

I admit it. I have an obsession with wanting to be Family of the Day at the Magic Kingdom. I stalk threads here on the DIS and ask others who have gotten to do this what their secret is. What time were you there? What were they wearing? What do they think did the trick? And I daydream..........

So as we planned the trip, we decided we'd pick one day to get there REALLY early and see if anything magical would happen. And this was it. I figured with 2 nights at the Christmas party later in the week, a really early morning would be out of the question. So of course, this turned out to be the coldest morning of the cold snap. DANG! And they weren't kidding about the wind, which made it so much worse. We dug out the new long johns, chemical hand warmers, gloves, hats, jackets....... you name it, we put it on!

We had initially planned to get there by 7 or 7:15 for the 9AM opening, in hopes that being the first ones there would do the trick. We weren't quite that early, but I still figured we were in good shape. After all, who would be crazy enough to drag their kids to the park THAT early on such a cold morning???? Heck, that's practically child abuse, right?

To increase our odds, we decided to use the taxi voucher they had given us the night before. I asked our taxi driver to take us to the Grand Floridian, where we would hop on the monorail, zip over one stop, then head on in to open the park. Easy peasy, right??????:rotfl2:

We've taken a taxi to the Grand Floridian from the POP before. I recall seeing the Swan and Dolphin on the way there, but I didn't remember seeing them up so CLOSE........ or seeing the OTHER Epcot resorts up so close...........

As luck would have it (or not! :rotfl:) it appeared our taxi driver was lost...... or confused....... or some such thing. DANG! :lmao: I said something and he eventually radioed in for directions and we were on our way. I still wasn't worried. After all, the park wouldn't open for another 90 minutes. And it was down in the 20's........ Surely no one else would be this crazy!

So we pulled up to the Grand Floridian and scampered up to the monorail platform for our short trip to the Magic Kingdom. There were other people on the monorail of course, but they were on their way to breakfast. SURELY no one else would want to wait over an hour in THAT cold!

At 7:40, we scurried down the ramp and through security. Over to the right I see all the patrons lined up for 8 AM entry with early ADR's. And I looked to the left......... to the regular park entrance gates and see..............

Anyone wanna guess how this goes? :lmao:

Now where was I.........

I looked to the left and saw............ lots of open space...........

and ONE ........... count 'em ONE.............. family standing by the turnstiles. Mom, Dad, and 3 really small kiddos....... chatting with a CM. I sauntered over and saw them putting their tickets into the machines. Knowing full well what was happening, I decided to make sure and asked if the park was opening already. No..... they were going to help open the park.

What were those people THINKING? Dragging those poor little kids out in the COLD like that? Maybe I should call the authorities and REPORT them....... Gonna be hard to open the park if they're tied up with child services!!!

No ......... wait. I had my OWN kid there in the cold. Oops.

Well, all I can say is that we tried. And I'm glad we did. So what next? Did we turn into popsicles while that other family was back in Toontown meeting like 20 characters and getting ready to ride the Steam Engine in with Mickey to open the park?

Nah. I might be crazy. But I'm not STUPID! :rotfl2:

I had a backup plan. Even I knew the odds of my scheme.........errr...... PLAN ........ working out were small. We had 8:05 ADR's somewhere warm and inviting for breakfast! We walked over to the breakfast turnstiles with just a few minutes to wait before being admitted to the most magical place on Earth. Not a bad backup plan, huh??? :goodvibes I would have gladly given up breakfast at the Crystal Palace for a chance to open the park. Well, I guess there's always next time, right???? And yes, I'll plot. And I'll scheme.......and give it another try.

It didn't take long for them to open the gates for the breakfast crowd. And we were greeted with our first view of the castle:

http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/mom2rtk/mk1breakstreet.jpg

That street was empty for a reason. Between the wind and the cold temperatures, nobody wanted to delay on Main Street for long. We stopped for a quick photo, but you can see Katie's hair blowing, and how cold we looked!

http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/mom2rtk/mk1breakstreetport.jpg

As we got to the Crystal Palace, we were treated to this view:

http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/mom2rtk/mk1breakcastle.jpg

Fortunately we were seated quickly and didn't take long to warm up. We both ordered hot chocolate and sat down to enjoy our first morning in the Magic Kingdom. It didn't feel very magic out in the cold, but inside.......... sheer heaven. I still look back at that morning and remember Katie sitting there sipping her hot chocolate.....with a view of the castle..... and us looking ahead at our first of several days in the Magic Kingdom. Would it have been nice to open the park? Sure. But we still found the magic sitting there in the Crystal Palace instead.

http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/mom2rtk/mk1breakmug.jpg

Soon a few friends came by our table:

http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/mom2rtk/mk1breaktig.jpg

I loved the holiday topiary!

http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/mom2rtk/mk1breakpoohtop.jpg

http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/mom2rtk/mk1breakpoohtop2.jpg

We had a nice leisurely breakfast and almost forgot just how cold it was outside. As I looked out the windows toward Main Street though, I saw people swarming down Main Street and realized we would need to leave our warm table and brave the great outdoors.

As we got near Main Street, we caught the Trolley Dancers decked out for the season:

http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/mom2rtk/mk1breaktrolley.jpg

No time to stop though! We were on a mission to find our very own personal Fairy Godmother! :wizard:

Just started your trip report and I love it! It looks like you guys had so much fun. I wish I had a mom like you when I was a kid, but mines hated taking me to Disney World :sad1:

I went on the 12th also but to the MK, for a one day thing, since it was a MVMCP that night, there was no one in the park, we rode every single ride and the coasters twice! There was about a 5 minute wait on Space Mountain! How crazy is that?

Anyways, I really enjoy your trip report and all your princesses talk and your daughter is so adorable!

Looking foward to reading the rest! :goodvibes

Bummer that you missed the Family of the Day. However, I really like your idea of having the breakfast as a backkup. Then if you don't get it you don't have to just sit around and wait for an hour! I think I may try that sometime. I wonder what they are doing for Family of the Day now that Toontown has closed. Have you heard any reports?

Glad you're on board ......... and .........

:welcome:

I'm not surprised at all that Sunday was slow in the Magic Kingdom. From everything I read that night before was a near 10 crowd level. The Christmas Party really drives the crowds in the Magic Kingdom that time of year. Everyone jams up on the nights there's no party so they can see Wishes and the Electric parade. And since Saturday was the only warm non-party night in the forecast for a week, it really packed them in. I'm glad you got to enjoy the slower day that followed!

The princess fun has barely started, so I'm glad you're enjoying it!

Yeah.... a bummer. But we were JUST close enough to whet my appetite and want it MORE! :rotfl2: So I'm sure we'll try again.

The problem is that from what I've read, it sounds like maybe all that character fun has ended with Toontown closed. I saw something here on the DIS. I think they said they just go in and meet the mayor and go up to the platform for the show. I'm hoping that will change back at some point.

Actually my REAL dream is to be Grand Marshalls in the MK afternoon parade. But that's so remote I don't even have a scheme for it!

Don't get me started on PIN Codes. I have officially given up. I think I'm on the NO PINCODES masterlist at Disney. I have tried it all....... signed up under various email addresses.......saved itineraries...... made changes........... you name it........ no pin code. I refuse to ever try again. :sad2:
Not trying to hijack here, (and I am a princess lover! princess:) but I'm 1/3 of DisneyAddict4Ever's trip!

Count me in with you and the "no PIN club". :sad2: I'd LOVE to get one though... DH wants a hubby/wife trip - and that ain't gonna happen unless I get me some help! :rotfl:

Those should be decent dates. Of course, if Disney releases a general public deal for that time, it will busy up, but not worse than any other time, and not NEARLY as bad as the following week.

And the weather should be decent. We were there that week in 08 and I barely ever needed a jacket, even wore shorts and a T to the Christmas party after dark. 2010 was a different story with record lows. That was out of the ordinary though. Typically it's beautiful and warm in the afternoons and cool enough for jackets in the evening.
I sure hope this past December was a fluke! I'll be coming from Indiana and I'd really like to thaw out - I'd settle for 60*!

Like I said, our weather in December 08 was heavenly....... last year had to be a fluke, right?

The bad thing of course, is that regardless of the forecast you need the "kitchen sink" packing method. It ALL has to come along since you never know what you'll need.

I just could never bring myself to wear my winter coat. We had them along, but it just seemed like admitting defeat or something. We opted instead to wear lots of layers and fleece jackekts. In that photo of us on Main Street, I think I was wearing every shirt out of my suitcase! :lmao: Well, it was at least 4 layers. And throw in some of of those chemical handwarmers. We found that if our hands and feet were warm, it helped TONS!

Just found your trip report and am really enjoying it! As the mom of 2 boys I love to read along on girl-centered trip reports :)

DH and I were at WDW Dec 13-18, 2010 in the frigid cold too! For the first time ever I got to enjoy Character Palooza on that trip thanks to the tips on the DIS. I felt a little silly at first since I was by myself for most of the pictures, (DH ditched me for RNR after the first set :) ) but really enjoyed meeting so many characters in a short amount of time.

I have a confession to make . . . I've been a fan of your costumes for a long time . . . in fact, I've sent my Mom links to your Flickr account and we've poured over your AMAZING dresses (and photography)! My mom is an awesome seamstress so I knew she'd appreciate your skills!

Can I ask one off-topic question? I saw on a halloween thread that Katie dressed up as Hermoine last year for Halloween? I'm assuming you made the robe and wondering if you started with a pattern? My boys want to be Harry and Ron this year, so I'll be making costumes for them.

Can't wait for more updates!

I absolutely agree!:thumbsup2

you have plenty of pixie dust during your visits! Your daughter's dresses are incredible, and it's obvious a lot of love goes into them!

Awww... many thanks!

Just found your trip report and am really enjoying it! As the mom of 2 boys I love to read along on girl-centered trip reports :)

First off.......

:welcome:

I'm glad you found Character Palooza. Isn't it great? And if you were there during the cold, you probably appreciated it being indoors!

And thanks so much for the kind comments.

You'll love my answer to your OT question. Katie's Hermoine costume was store-bought! Not much help, am I????

But that's what she wanted. so that's what we did. I could have done the robe and really enjoyed that, but I don't do applique work and really wanted the school emblem on the pocket.

Yeah......we'll go with that........ I think there's an age cutoff of.....say....... 9..... for a kid to be at the Magic Kingdom that early before it's considered child abuse! :lmao:

Is it still considered Disney Magic when you have to "scheme" and plan that much??? Just asking......

Are you kidding? The scheming and plotting is half the fun! So even though my scheme didn't work out, we had tons of fun dreaming about the possibility all year. And it's a great part of our trip memory, even though it didn't end as hoped!

And you'll see later that one of my favorite moments on the trip involved no scheming on my part at all. Caught me completely off-guard in fact.....

I'm so sorry your plan didn't work out.:sad2: But you've given me an idea to try for our next trip. I would have to ditch DH to make it work. I know Danielle would give it a try since she's always asking what do you have to do be the opening family.

Good thing you had that backup plan!:thumbsup2 I would have ditched breakfast for opening the park too.

I've never gotten a pin either. I even called before and asked if one was attached to by name, but no luck.

Great trip report. I am so with it. My daughter is almost 10 (on Monday) and stopped liking princesses awhile ago. That only leaves me.

I can't sew a lick though (maybe the costumes would have helped.).

Can't wait to read more.

This may inspire me to do a girls day trip to Disneyland (only 1 hour away).

Tangled the movie came out in November. We hadn't had a chance to see it yet, but I had certainly seen photos of Rapunzel's dress. I REALLY wanted to try my hand at making one for this trip, and Katie wanted me to. It's always hard for me to finish up my work and get out the door for our trips, and I just didn't know if I'd have time. Most of the sewing I do for these trips is done months in advance. Besides, I still hadn't found the right fabrics.

Then less than a week before leaving, I made one last trek across town in hopes of finding the missing piece of fabric. SUCCESS! Now... would I have time........ Just a few days before leaving, I cleared some time and put it together.

Another DIS'er (lorilais_mommy) was in Disney a few days ahead of us. They had done the Tangled Play & Greet earlier in the week and Julie was nice enough to call and give me the heads up. She said the lines were staying really long all day, so the best bet was to be there by 9:30 for the 10 AM set.

So I figured we had just enough time for one quick stop before heading over to meet Rapunzel & Flynn. So we went around the castle........ and there she was. Our very own personal Fairy Godmother. I must say I did scold her for not doing something to help us with the weather, but she quickly reminded me that was Mother Nature's territory. Dang! Here we had an "in" with someone with magical powers..... and it was the wrong power!

http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/mom2rtk/mk1rapfg.jpg

It was really nice to see her again and we promised to stop in and share some of Katie's other costumes over the course of the week. After a magical "bibbidi bobbidi boo" we were on our way to Fairytale Garden.

We were happy to find we were only the 3rd or 4th group in line. The CM told us they had started turning people away for the DAY at 3 PM the day before. YIKES! I'm not even sure I would want to wait through a line like that!

I don't remember what I said to Katie to get this look, but I'm pretty sure I deserved it. We tease and joke back and forth a lot. And she really has "the look" down pat.

http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/mom2rtk/mk1rapunzellook.jpg

Katie could have participated in the "play" part of the "play & greet" but opted to just get in line to meet them after. The "play" part of the meeting just skews WAY too young for girls Katie's age. I was really sort of disappointed in the setup, but we were just there for pictures with the characters.

We were done pretty quickly and ducked into Cosmic Ray's to warm up and change for the next stop on our itinerary............ Tiana and Naveen. I had heard their lines stayed pretty long all day, and wanted to get there as early as possible.

Tiana's blue gown is actually one of Katie's favorites. I think it's because it's more of a grown up style. I think she sees herself going to prom in something like it one day. This was also a fairly last minute addition. I hadn't gotten to it and didn't have time, but she kept asking. And in the past I've always just said "next time". But this could be the end of the costume play. I expect her to age out of it any time. So if she really wanted something, I tried hard to do it. And to be honest, there are just some costumes that I get a bee in my bonnet about wanting to try. This was one of them.

Nothing like a strapless gown on a cold morning! Katie didn’t care. She had been looking forward to wearing that gown since I made it. Good thing she had matching long gloves and a fleece lined cape! Tiana and Naveen were out in their spot in Liberty Square when we walked up and the line was thankfully fairly short.

http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/mom2rtk/mk1tiananaveenblue2.jpg

Next we headed back to Fantasyland and ducked into Castle Couture, the gift shop behind the castle. They have a studio set up in there for the girls to visit after doing the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique. We checked out the adorable decor as we warmed up.

http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/mom2rtk/mk1bbbdress.jpg

Katie liked the full length mirror! :lmao:

http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/mom2rtk/mk1bbbmirror.jpg

http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/mom2rtk/mk1bbbpose.jpg

As we exited, Katie wanted to ride the carousel. That’s when I first noticed the crowds building that day. There was actually a line for the carousel! Maybe I’m spoiled by low crowd times, but I was surprised to find a line there. Fortuantely it wasn’t long. She wanted to ride again, so we did.

http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/mom2rtk/mk1carousel.jpg

We had an early ADR for lunch in one of our favorite places. Any guess where?

ok, I am having trouble keeping up so pardon the late response.

First of all, on your lens I hear that the 17-55 IS is fantastic! Based on the results I see from you I will have to agree. One thing I struggle a bit with is locking in autofocus on the dark rides. I hear that the focusing on the 17-55 is excellent though. I am also envious of the Tonika 11-16. You have a great set of lenses in the short to mid focal length ranges. I also love the high ISO settings as well when you need them. When you add that to the large apertures you have a whole new world opened up for low light.

Ok, sorry for taking this to an overly technical direction. On to your TR...

I also dreamed about being a family of the day just once but I can't even get my family up early enough to make the opening. I just know that if I ever got them there early enough to have a chance that there would be that one other family in front as you experienced and then my family would run me into the Seven Seas Lagoon. Kudos to you to be smart enough to have a back up plan. :thumbsup2

I love the empty park pictures from the morning. Hmm...some day perhaps I can convince my family for an early CP breakfast and mislead them on how early we need to be there and work a plan similar to yours. Well, except for the confused taxi driver part.

Great pictures of the characters. So many wonderful pictures of Katie with them. I also love "the look" picture. My daughter can sport that same look.

Looking forward for more. I am guessing you'll have some great princess pictures from lunch.

The higher ISOs do help for low light, but in the particularly dark scenes, the AF still may not have enough light to focus. I have a Nikon d300s and did okay with Spaceship Earth and a couple others, but I still have a difficult time with POTC and Peter Pan. Granted I was using my 24-85mm zoom with a variable f/stop, but still!

I also dreamed about being a family of the day just once but I can't even get my family up early enough to make the opening.

Be careful there... you may have a revolt on your hands! Our last 2 trips, I've made DH get up before the hour of decency for early breakfast (O'hana at 7:50a and CP at 8:05a :rolleyes1 - which in Disney time, isn't that early). BUT he made me pinky-swear that for our next trip (in 5 years :faint:) that I would NOT book any breakfasts...

I really do feel like a whole world has opened up to me with the low light situations and am LOVING it! I have learned a lot over on the Photography forum.

I do think I got a few decent dark ride shots this trip and look forward to posting them. The title on your first trip report really hooked me. I knew exactly what you were talking about with that title. That really is the hardest ride to capture. But it's one of my favorites, so I have to keep trying! I did get one decent shot in Peter Pan, which will be in my next update, but not the shot I want........ I want the one of the clock tower. And yes, the problem is the AF. It's almost impossible to get it to lock onto anything in such low light. I guess I need to go manual, but I just haven't had a chance to practice that, and hate to risk my one or 2 trips through a ride in a given year practicing!

I also dreamed about being a family of the day just once but I can't even get my family up early enough to make the opening. Well, there's a reason our attempt to open the park came on a trip without the entire family along. I know our limits too! The time we got to open DHS, that was just Katie and me too. Getting the whole family there early enough would have been just too stressful.

I do love starting the day with early park entry though. We usually get great pictures on our way into the park early, but this time it was so close it really limited what we could do.

Great pictures and fabulous costumes once again! I love how you have a personal relationship with the Fairy Godmother. So awesome! How did Rapunzel and Tiana react to the costumes? Especially Tiana because I would guess she doesn't see that costume very often. I can't wait to see what costume Katie wears to the castle.

Many thanks! It was VERY fun to walk up to the Fairy Godmother and have her greet us by name! :goodvibes

It's always a lot of fun to see the reaction of the characters to the various costumes. They see the same costumes over and over in the course of a day, so they like seeing something different. Tiana and Naveen were probably the only people in the park to "get" the blue Tiana gown. We had at least one person ask if Katie was Cinderella :rotfl2:, probably because it was blue.

On NO! Maybe you can leave him in the room, have breakfast without him, then meet up later? If we're not doing breakfast, we still like to be at rope drop just to get in that magical first hour with low wait times!

We still need to do O'Hana. We did it once back in 02 I think...... but that's a long time ago........We tend to do all our favorites, some of them more than once....so it doesn't leave opportunities for others. The biggest problem though is that once in the park, we like to stay til we drop. So we're far more likely to eat at the park restaurants than the resort restaurants (unless it's dinner AFTER leaving the park for the day).

So maybe you didn't have to think hard to guess that we'd have lunch in the castle. Of course we love the princesses. And of course we love eating IN the castle. But I also love having a relaxing meal in the heart of Fantasyland. So it's a win/win/win! I really can't wait for the new Be Our Guest restaurant to open up for another alternative in Fantasyland!

That morning Katie picked what she'd like to wear to lunch at the castle. She chose to bring Sleeping Beauty. Aurora has always been her favorite princess, so I wasn't surprised. The Cinderella in the library looked very familiar, but I couldn’t quite place her. She was very striking, one of the prettiest I’ve seen. Later I remembered she was the Cinderella in the parade we saw last fall.

http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/mom2rtk/mk1crtcindy.jpg

http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/mom2rtk/mk1crteat.jpg

We had a table for two by the windows and got to look out over Fantasyland while we ate. It was magical as always. We sat near a larger group with 2 tiny girls dressed as princesses. When the mom took pictures of the girls with the princesses, Katie got up and made bunny ears over the mom to get the girls to smile. Always willing to help someone get good princess photos! :rotfl:

It was nice to sit and enjoy a lovely lunch in the warm surroundings. It was SO easy to forget just how cold it still was outside!

It was early afternoon, and we still had not made our traditional spin around Fantasyland on Dumbo. But the last thing either of us wanted to do was go up in the cold air and spin around. I let Katie choose our next stop, and it wasn't much warmer, but what the heck! One of her favorite rides is the Tomorrowland Transit Authority, so we headed that way. The park seemed pretty crowded, and we when we got to Tomorrowland, we found there was a line for the TTA! Now granted, we don't do Disney in the busy season, but I don't think we've ever seen a line there. Fortunately it moved quickly, but it was evidence of the crowds that day. I used to think this ride was pretty lame, but even I have a newfound love for the ride. There’s nothing better than sitting back and taking in the views of the park as you weave in and out of the buildings (and warmth!) of Tomorrowland.

http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/mom2rtk/mk1tta.jpg

We then returned to Fantasyland to do Peter Pan with fastpasses we picked up earlier. This is absolutely one of my favorite rides in the Magic Kingdom. It captures the magic so well.

Like always, I tried to get some pictures. This is sort of the holy grail in my book for dark ride photography. I didn't get the shot of the clock tower I want, but I got a nice one of Wendy walking the plank. I'm going to have to work harder on my manual focus skills.........

Clearskies.......... I SO get the title of your first trip report!

Katie also wanted to ride the carousel again, so what the heck………. Sure you can ride a carousel any day at the mall. But can you ride a carousel with a view of Cinderella’s Castle???

Next....... we head for an attraction we've never done at Disney!

I liked Ohana! The food was good and the fresh juice was lovely! Stitch and Pluto came back to our table twice, and Mickey was wonderful. The Lilo glossed over our table though, and that kinda stunk, but the others DEFINITELY made up for it!

Will do!

It took a long time for us to get to a point where some of us could do one thing while traveling, and some of us can do another. I hope you can talk him into at least ONE breakfast. And in my book ANYTHING tastes better than something I have to make myself at home and clean up after!

I think part of our deal with Ohana is just the we can take or leave Lilo & Stitch. We're not huge Pooh fans either, but we still love the Crystal Palace, so I think we ought to try Ohana again.

Of course, Ohana doesn't offer us the chance to be a good backup plan like Crystal Palace does. Nor does it get us pre-park opening photos....... :rolleyes1

I've talked to Danielle and explained what y'all did and she's all for giving it a try. We have to ditch some dead weight, namely some other family members. And if it worked I would have to document it, but that might now happen for a few years. I'm still working on New Years 2006.

I don't know when we're going back. We played around with the idea of going back between Christmas and New Years this year but I haven't gotten Dennis to commit yet.

LOL! Vanessa, you kill me! This is ABSOLUTELY a plan that won't work with dead weight!

And you know if it worked, I really WOULD want to hear about it. It would give me renewed hope to try again!

Now everybody just has to promise not to try this the week we'll be back and trying it again, OK????? I've had the scheme working in my brain for some time. I just need to refine some points and get one more shot....... :goodvibes Oh, and they need to bring back the massive character meeting too........ :rotfl:

And if any of you have a scheme for being chose Grand Marshalls at the afternoon parade...... you HAVE to share!

We were at dinner at CRT once during the Year of a Million Dreams. The family staying in the Dream Suite was just a few tables over and they introduced them. It took every ounce of my self-control not to go over and offer to make an entire princess wardrobe for their daughter if they'd just adopt us for the night! :rotfl2:

You sound like a nice person but I find your actions in this regard misguided. I know I'll get slammed for saying this but my feeling is that you've had your turn being Family of the Day and opening a park. You should give others who have yet to have that wonderful opportunity a chance. For you to scheme and plot so much to be "chosen" again seems to go against the randomness, once-in-a-lifetime spirit and magic that Disney tries so hard to extend to the millions of other guests who have yet to partake in such a great event. JMHO. Let the flaming begin......

I love the strapless Tiana gown! Your daughter looked so beautiful, she is such a lucky girl.

The TTA is one of my favorite rides, there is just something about looking at the castle from the high view and just sitting back and enjoy, good choice from Katie :)

It is fun to guess which costume Katie will wear next hehe :goodvibes I wonder how many bags you take to pack all of those costumes, it seems like you have an endless supply and it's only the 2nd day!

Sometimes you have to make your owm luck, or magic. I love being a "random" spirit and I find the the author of this trip report has that spirit as well. OH, and the "once in a life time memories" that come from being ready and willing to experiance life are the BEST! Disney picks people to "dust" with magic everywhere, at everytime.

Scheming is only half the fun. Disney wouldn't exist if people didn't go looking for magic. I hope someday you''ll feel the magic too!

For the longest time we never even tried TTA. It didn't look that interesting. Then Katie wanted to try it and I'm so glad we did. I realized it's not about the ride itself. It's about the view FROM the ride. Sort of like Dumbo. It's not about the ride.... you can ride a Dumbo sort of ride any day at a carnival. But the veiw FROM Dumbo....... is priceless. It's why we like it so much.

As for the bags..... let's just say we fly Southwest so there are no baggage fees! :lmao:

Many thanks for the vote of support. We got a year of fun out of that attempt ..... and it didn't even work. But I still laugh about it with Katie and we really enjoyed trying.

It's sort of like the Year of a Million Dreams promotion. I LOVED that promotion and still wish they'd bring it back. We were never chosen for anything. But I loved joking with my family about how we should keep our stuff organized ....... because we'd need to move to the castle that night! We didn't get any dream fastpasses, no special YOMD ears...... but we had TONS of fun walking around Disney looking for the Dream Squad!

Welcome  On our Jan 09 trip we did get picked to open the Lion King show in AK. We were just walking and I was poping wheelies with my DD's stroller and a CM asked us if we were having fun and how we were enjoying our first visit ( we had our 1st visit pins on) I replies we were having a blast and loved being at WDW. She as us to follow her and the rest is " A Year of a Million Dreams" history. We opened the show, got VIP seating and a certificate.

Very cool! Congrats! What a great show to open too. We just saw it for our second time this trip..... Great....... Now I'm gonna be singing those songs all night! :lmao: My family thanks you!

I really do think that the CM's at Disney work there because they are very enthusiastic about Disney. They love to encounter guests with the same level of enthusiasm. :thumbsup2

So you think the other family that was there THAT EARLY was going for randomness? I think not. If it was truly random they wouldn't pick the first family in line! But honestly, why say anything if you can't say anything nice? Not "slamming" you, but just curious as to why you felt the need to say anything when you already knew it would make others unhappy. Doesn't sound very "disney magic like" to me. JMHO

I think that was the worst morning of all. We did OK though. It felt SO good to sit down in the Crystal Palace and look out at the castle from our WARM spots inside! We didn't get as much done that day as we would have liked since we kept ducking indoors. But we did OK, and knew we had several more days left in the Magic Kingdom.

Thanks for the comment on the blue gown. If I was to make it again, I'd make the skirt fuller, but I tend to tweak each dress each time I do it again. Katie loved it though and gives me the evil eye any time I make a comment about maybe selling it to start a fund for another trip. :rotfl2:

I'd probably have fun with pageant gowns, but doubt I could afford all the other stuff!

ITA! I'd bet my next paycheck that 92% + of the people who show up 2 hours early are all there for the same reason...

WDW is a very magical place, but it doesn't get like that on its own. A lot of the times, you've got to give it a little extra push.

I hope you can get a few more posts under your belt [not you scraps... senor grumpy pants] before you come in and hijack a perfectly civil, well written, and entertaining TR.

I see lots of posts here on the DIS asking whether to take the DSLR along or just go with the point & shoot. My answer is always the same.... If now now, WHEN? Disney is such an amazing VISUAL place, it would drive me nuts to be there without the best camera I own.

Yes, it's a hassle to carry a larger camera, but it's really worth it.

Congrats on the upgrade!! I do have a question for you about the camera. The one thing I have found in going from my xs to the t1i is that I get a "busy" message way more than I used to-are you running into that as well or have I just won the special lottery?

I do sometimes, and that is my only disappointment. But I know that about it and sort of always keep it in the back of my mind.

I think the problem is the higher MP with the newer models takes up more of the "buffer". I would think if you dialed down to a smaller file size that would help. But I shoot in RAW and those are the largest files.

I'm sure that is the ONE reason that will get me to upgrade again down the road.

bad form... there is nothing wrong with a parent trying to give her daughter wonderful childhood memories to cherish. I say good on her for being such a wonderful mother that she goes through all that trouble for her daughter. Sure it is supposed to be random, but most people who come to Disney just show up with out any planning, which to be set their child up for a potential bad trip not knowing how crazy this place can be, especially if they come during a HIGH season. So for this mom to take the tiem out of her life to plan an amazing trip for her daughter HOORAY for her! She is trying to tell a wonderful story here and I don't think it was appropriate for you to comment like that here, you should have atleast Pm her and not defaced her infront of everyone.

It is a forum for opinions, but not is this case. She wrote this story to entertain others, not to get input on wether or not you considered her actions appropriate by others. Now to all, lets let this issue pass and let this women get back to her purpose, telling her and her daughter's story. We do not need to be bogging down her thread with petty issues. That is the last I am saying and I hope everyone else does the same.

Yes. That is correct. The higher MP cameras take longer to write to the card because the file size is so big.

There are memory cards that are supposed to be embedded with a faster chip to handle the larger file sizes. But they are kind of expensive!

kwitcherkicken99
03-04-2011, 11:31 AM
I have that trouble sometimes when I'm shooting sports... I have to keep the max file size because my camera will take up to 7 frames per second. When you run images that quickly, you actually lose some of the max file size. Shooting as big as I can go saves the images from losing too much quality. :) BUT, if I run a long string of images, it bogs down my card...

admin@wdwinfo.com or read our guidelines http://www.wdwinfo.com/guidelines.htm

Please take note of 4 & 9.
4. NO FIGHTING/SARCASM
While we'd like to think that a Disney fan site is always lighthearted, there are times when there are disagreements. Let's face it, there are certain topics that can transform any of us into a raging "Donald Duck." When you sense this is happening, we ask that you step away from the discussion before it escalates into a fight. Just like Mom always said about fighting, we don't care who started the argument and we don't want it on the DIS. (Okay, she didn't say the part about the DIS, but you know what we mean.) No attacking others and no sarcasm please. Either will result in an infraction

9. MODERATORS
The DIS has a wonderful group of Moderators who have volunteered to assist our visitors and monitor the boards. Part of their responsibilities are ensuring that our guidelines are followed which may require that a thread is edited, deleted, closed or moved. If these decisions impact you, we ask that you respect them. Should you have any questions, please direct them to admin@wdwinfo.com. Any discussion about a Moderating decision that takes place on the boards could result in an infraction.

I'm a late reader, but read your report w/ in 1 day. I'm a quick reader.
I love your dresses. I can picture you making your d.d's prom dress.

You have been very lucky being family of the day many times. We hardly get any luck when we're in disney, probably because we're much older. (60 something and a 24 year old.) but then again, when at disney you're a kid @ heart.

I am a huge M. Poppin's fan and always wished i could get a picture with the penquins....Darn!!

Good morning. Ready for the next installment whenever you are. :goodvibes

Sorry to drop of the face of the Earth for a bit. I got sidelined with some work. But I hope to have a new installment tomorrow! :yay:

I love my DSLR and yes it's pain to carry, but what I come home with makes it all worth it.

I occasionally have a recurring nightmare........ I'm a Disney and I left my camera behind. :scared1: Usually it's back in the hotel, but I just can't get there to get it........:rotfl2:

Laugh if you must........ It's true! :rotfl:

I have that trouble sometimes when I'm shooting sports... I have to keep the max file size because my camera will take up to 7 frames per second. When you run images that quickly, you actually lose some of the max file size. Shooting as big as I can go saves the images from losing too much quality. :) BUT, if I run a long string of images, it bogs down my card...

I knew the T2i had larger file sizes, which I'm wasn't excited about. But I hadn't considered was how much faster it would fill the buffer. I do already use class 6 cards. The jump to class 10 is quite a bit more, so I'm not sure that's in the offing. Or if it would help. Some of it is the card, some of it the camera. I've been OK with it except at my son's cross country meets. Track is starting soon, so I'm sure it will bug me there even more. I shoot on burst mode when he runs, so it fills really fast. I have learned to pace myself, not to just take shot after shot unless I need to. It wasn't an issue at all during basketball season. But track, where you wait hours for your kid's brief appearance, is a whole other matter!

kwitcherkicken, what camera do you use?

Glad (well, not glad but you kwim) it isn't just me!! BTW, so sorry someone has tried to replace the pixie dust in you TR with salt-I am still enjoying it very much. I just want to know how you find the time to do it all:wizard:

No, I get what you mean.

And many thanks for the kind support! As for finding time to do it all.... Most days I feel like I need a little help from our Fairy Godmother to get through. The Disney stuff...... the costumes...... the trips........ even this trip report..... are what get me though. Disney just makes me smile.

It's official. I'm addicted. I love both you and your daughters outfits, and not just the princess ones (although it makes me want to dress as a princess lol!).

:welcome:

Thanks for signing on! And thank you for the kind comments. It all makes me want to dress like a princess too. But I wouldn't want to scare the other guests! :rotfl: So I have resigned myself to playing Fairy Godmother and villains........ which is probably more fun anyway.

Claire really wants to see Rapunzel, but I know we will have no chance. We won't get to Mk late becuase that is the day we disembark from the cruise. And no way am I spending a couple of hours in line. I love her, but I think we would al lgo mad doing that.

I hadn't even considered what your late day touring would do to your odds of seeing Rapunzel. It really does pretty much preclude it. Maybe you can at least get her picture in front of that cool tower in Epcot?

I'm just going to point out that you don't even have enough posts to recieve PMs yet.

Jen....... You win the prize today! You definitely have a career as a private investigator ahead of you. I've been crazy busy with work the last few days, but THIS got me laughing right out loud....... because it's TRUE!

Wow! Your trip report is amazing so far! I love that you took a mother/daughter trip. And the costumes!!!! You are one talented mama!:worship:

Thank you so much! And if you haven't gotten your official welcome yet (I'm starting to lose track! :lmao:) then........

:welcome:

Just wanted to stop in and say hello!. I've read your TR over the past 2 days and I'm loving it. My 4 yr old dd and I love your dd's dresses, your are very talented. Can't wait to read more!

:welcome: to you as well! And I'm honored that your daughter is reading along too. You have SO much princessy fun ahead of you!

Hello!

:welcome: to the princess party:

I love that you are doing mother/daughter trips as an adult! It gives me something to look forward as Katie gets older!

We are also huge Mary Poppins fans. That's actually one of my favorite costumes. I love the penguins too. Last year before our trip I stalked those dang penguins here on the DISboards, right down to starting a thread asking where I would be most likely to find them. We were lucky enough to find one with Mary at Character Palooza on that trip. When I get to Mary later in this trip, I'll dredge up the photo.

I am so blown away by the stunning princess gowns...they seem to get prettier in every update!! Your DD is pretty much officially the luckiest little girl in the world. :goodvibes The Rapunzel and Tiana gowns looked amazing. And you can tell from your DD's face how much she loves it...those pics of her in her Tiana gown looking in the mirror are adorable!!

Can't wait for your next update! :goodvibes

Thank you so much. I still think it's funny that she chose to bring the strapless gown on the coldest morning of the trip. Her BBB appointment was the following day, and she went strapless again. You can tell her tastes are definitely growing up!

Love the Rapunzel dress! We are hoping that ther is still a Rapunzel meet and greet in October when we go back for dd's 8th birthday!

Your pictures are amazing! Can't wait to see more!

I'm sure you'll be fine with Rapunzel still being there in October. They redid Belle's Storytime into that meet & greet, so I'm guessing it's going to be there a while.

And a birthday at Disney? Does it get any better? We spent Katie's birthday in the Magic Kingdom last year, and it really was awesome. I was kicking around spending sort of a landmark birthday of my own next year in the Magic Kingdom.... but it just dawned on me my second son will be just a couple weeks away from high school graduation then. So much for my scheme.....errrrr....... plan..........

Loving your report! Those gowns you have made are absolutely gorgeous. You have one lucky little girl. I possess no skill at all when it comes to sewing. Heck, I can hardly sew on a button. :rotfl2:

I just want to say, keep doing what you are doing, cuz you are making some very special memories for your daughter that she will absolutely never forget. :thumbsup2

Thank you so much. I really do appreciate all the kind words.

As for no sewing skill........ we all get different genes. My family says that when God was handing out the cooking genes, I was back in line for a second dose of the sewing gene and completely missed out. The sad part is....... they are right........ :lmao:

WhooHoo an update. Rapunzel and Flynn Rider look like a lot of fun. You guys have some fun character interactions. Keep the updates a comin

We are definitely character stalkers..........errrrr.... hunters .......... of the first degree. I really am glad I was able to get Rapunzel done for this trip. We finally saw the movie after Christmas and really enjoyed it. And I finally just bought our own stuffed green Pascal for some portraits in the costume.

Love the Rapunzel and blue Tiana dresses. And I personally think your Aurora is better than the CRT one! :lmao: I really hope we can meet Rapunzel in Sept/Oct, but it sounds like she's pretty popular so hopefully won't be going anywhere. My DD loved Tangled.

So do you sell Katie's outgrown dresses?!?!? ;)

I agree. I don't think Rapunzel and Flynn are going anywhere any time soon. Just be sure to get there at rope drop so it stays fun and doesn't turn into an endurance contest! We really enjoyed the movie too. Since Katie has the Rapunzel costume already, I have been thinking it might be fun to try my hand at making a Mother Gothel costume for myself. Heck I think I already have enough gray in my hair.......

And I do occasionally sell one or two of Katie's costumes to put toward a new trip. I've already been told the Tianas are to be kept for her kids. I can't keep them all though or I'd have to put an addition on the back of the house!

YEAH! :welcome:

No need to lurk! :goodvibes

The fancy stuff is the most fun to make! I just always recommend making the pattern from some throw-away fabric first before cutting the good stuff.

I'm editing more photos to finish out our first Magic Kingdom day. Fortunately there are 3 more Magic Kingdom days to go, along with some other parks too!

The costume fun is just starting............

And unfortunately the weather woes aren't over yet either......

And Jen, for your prize you win an all expense cruise on the Disney Dream! It just has to be redeemed in the next month. You can do that, right?

The rest of us will all stay behind here studying up on DIS policies so next time one of US can catch that little detail about needing 10 posts to even GET PM's!!! :rotfl2:

I'm editing photos so I can finish out the day today.

Nothing like spending the coldest evening of the entire trip camped outdoors in front of the castle, right????

12/13 Magic Kingdom Continued:

Sorry it took so long to get back. I thought my photos weren't looking as sharp online as on my computer, so I wanted to change what I was doing. I think I'm going to like this better.

We next headed for Liberty Square. Even us hard-core princess fans eventually leave Fantasyland!

As we came around the corner Liberty Square, we noticed it was parade time. Traffic was really bottled up. This was clearly NOT a low crowd day in the Magic Kingdom. And it was still really cold, so the chance to duck indoors and warm up was very appealing.

In all our trips to Disney, we’ve never done the Hall of Presidents and I wanted to try photographing it. I also wanted to make a point of trying some things we always overlook. I thought it was interesting, and fun to shoot, but Katie didn’t seem as interested as I thought she would. She said they all looked funny!

The parade had just finished so that area was even more congested when we came out. Katie really wanted to do the Haunted Mansion, so we decided to use one set of special fastpasses to ride. A special fastpass burned to do Haunted Mansion? Sounds nutty, but the park was crazy busy, and we really wanted to do something else before heading for the hub to see the castle show. Since it’s not a fastpass ride, we were led through the exit directly to the loading platform.

I have tried my hand at photographing Haunted Mansion a fair number of times. I seem to manage the same few shots each time but can't break new ground. I suppose that's because it's SUCH a dark dark ride. At least I feel like these few shots do seem to get marginally better each time I try! :lmao:

Since we were in Liberty Square, we decided to grab an early dinner at Columbia Harbor House. Since I didn't want to leave Katie by herself to fetch food later.... and since I didn't want to give up our spots in front of the castle once we had them.... it was now or never. I've heard so many good things about it, but never had the chance to try it out. So add that to our list of new things tried. And yes, the Tuna sandwich was just as good as everyone says.

It was nice to spend a little more time indoors out of the cold. And we really had to eat then. The goal was to set up camp right in front of the castle for the duration...... Dream Along With Mickey........ Move It, Shake It Parade....... Castle Lighting.......... Main Street Electrical Parade.......... and Wishes.

That's a pretty ambitious agenda given the weather. And what about the crowds? I had been sort of dreading this night in fear of the crowds. There had even been a thread here on the DIS from someone dreading this night in the MK. It was one of the limited non-party nights that week for guests to see the night entertainment. So did the daytime crowds stick around ??????

stephielela
03-06-2011, 08:44 PM
Good to know the Tuna lived up to the hype, since that's what I plan on getting!!

I think camping out in the perfect spot is a great way to spend an evening at MK! I hope you didn't freeze!!

Before settling into our spots across from the castle, we made a run down Main Street to our locker to stow some things and retrieve my tripod. We stopped for a quick shot by those adorable Tin Soldiers:

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5131/5503729917_ca2f96f14a_z.jpg

Then we bought some hot chocolate and headed back to the castle for the last Dream Along with Mickey of the day. We got all situated........ only to hear them announce that because of "circumstances beyond their control" they could not perform the show. I assume it was the cold, but never really figured out what problem the cold would cause. I was disappointed, but then heard them announce that some of the performers would come down to greet people instead! And to think I thought the princess fun was over for the day!

What a treat to get an up close view of those GORGEOUS costumes! I had modeled Katie's Snow White costume for this trip after the Snow White from the show. My only disappointment was how fast those lines formed. We got to meet Cindy and Snow White with their princes:

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5293/5503726175_1c7cc800f4_z.jpg

Soon after the Move It Shake It parade got under way. We had never seen this parade, so wanted to add this to our list of new experiences this trip. I really enjoyed photographing the parade against the pretty blue sky as the sun was setting.

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5256/5504341882_4ea9abd47d.jpg

By the time the parade was over, the sun had set and it got even colder. We didn't have our winter coats with us, but we had lots of layers on, and broke out the hand and footwarmers. I was doing fine with those and my many layers of clothes, so I have Katie my jacket as an extra layer. Between shows, she zipped it over her head and said she was just fine.

We had a date to meet Julie (Lorilais_mommie here on the DIS..... hi Julie!) and her family in front of the castle that night. They spent the day in Epcot, but made it to the MK in time for the evening entertainment. It was fun to meet friends there, and Katie enjoyed meeting little Lorilais!) I wish I had taken a picture of them, but didn't think of it with the sun down. That and I'm pretty sure my brain cells were all frozen.......

Before we knew it, the time had come for one of the best little bits of magic Disney produces. It's hard to believe that the castle lights have only been on for a short time. But the first time I saw pictures of them (2007 I think????) I knew I'd be planning a Christmas trip. And we did indeed make it there to see them in 2008. But I was still looking forward to seeing them again this time. The show may only be 5 minutes long. But it's breathtaking and just sends a chill up my spine........OK......... so maybe it was't THAT hard to send a chill up my spine out in the cold....... but you get the idea...... :lmao:

Of course, our favorite Disney character was in charge........

When the show was over, we enjoyed one of my favorite of all Disney attractions............ Castle gazing......... I chatted with Julie......... and Katie told me every time it changed colors!

I was really looking forward to photographing the Electrical parade with the T2i. With the higher ISO capability, I knew I could get a faster shutter speed even in the dark. There was ONE shot I really wanted to nail. Any guesses which one it was????? Hint....... it's the reason we were sitting in front of the castle. I thought it would make the perfect backdrop:

And finally......... Wishes. I shot these from right in front of the castle with my wide angle lens. I had debated back and forth on where to shoot from that night. All the photography experts on the DIS say the best spot is back near Casey's on Main Street. But I knew I wanted to be right on the curb by the castle for the Electrical parade. And I didn't want to stake out our spot and then leave it not knowing was available farther back. So I stuck it out where we were. Besides, I think Katie had her little spot of pavement all warmed up!

The wind never did let up. You can tell from the smoke trails:

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5211/5504333446_ef01e5a46f_z.jpg

So yes......... it stayed cold. It's the coldest I've ever been in the Magic Kingdom. But yes, those little hand and footwarmers make a big difference. And yes....... Katie was a trooper. She never complained about the cold and enjoyed the evening. In spite of the cold, we enjoyed the evening full of colorful sparkly lights.

And the crowds? It was a little crowded up near the castle, but I turned and looked behind us, back near the Partners statue......... and saw plenty of open space. Apparently the rest of the world was wise enough to go in when the sun set. But it was still a magical evening.

We left around 8:30 knowing we'd be back for more cold.......errrr...... fun........ in less than 12 hours!

We really dodged a bullet in 08. I kept reading about the bitter cold stretch they were having in FL. But we got lucky and it warmed up right before we went down. We did all the evening activities in shorts and t-shirts. So this was definitely a different experience. If you come prepared though, it's manageable.

I HIGHLY recommend going when you can see those castle lights. The photos can't possibly do them justice.

Wow your pictures are fabulous. Danielle was looking over my shoulder and had to close her eyes during the Haunted Mansion pictures. She still gets scared on it, but she did peak. I'm sure you were disappointed to miss the show, but what a consolation prize - pics with the princesses (and princes) in those beautiful costumes in front of the castle! :woohoo:

Beautiful pictures of the castle, parade and Wishes . . . my guess is the picture of Cinderella's Coach with the Fairy Godmother looking at you in the MSEP is the shot you wanted. It turned out great!

My goodness you are quick at providing updates. I have to tell my wife to stop making plans to go away for the weekends so that I can keep up :rotfl: I am several pages behind and just catching up from your lunch so pardon the late responses.

What a great table at the castle overlooking fantasyland and you got some great pictures with the other princesses besides your daughter. I can't tell if you needed a flash with the lighting there but if you did use one then you did a great job because, well I can't tell if you used one :)

Wow, if TTA had a line then boy that was one awfully crowded day. You did good to accomplish so much.

Great shot of Wendy on Peter Pan. One good shot from that devilish ride is one more than what I was able to get on my 2009 trip. I did have a little more success on my last trip but not too much more. I was wondering if manual focus was needed with your camera/lens combo but I guess it was. That is part of my downfall. I am just not as good with manual focus.

Great pictures of HOP and HM. I love the shot you have with the 5 busts. I don't have a wide enough fast lens to capture such a shot.

Awesome pictures of the parade with the castle in the background as well as the sky turning colors in the background. I especially love the first picture. Great job!

I am jealous of your holiday lights with the castle. We have yet to travel at that time of year to see it. Sigh, someday....perhaps I'll make it there. Your pictures are beautiful.

Great job with MSEP. The ability to use the high ISO really on your camera is such a wonderful thing. Great capture of the coach and you favorite character. Love it with the castle and the holiday lights in the background.

Finally, love the wishes pictures. It seems like at least the wind was not bad enough to cause slight movements with your camera in your tripod. Just outstanding shots.

So many great pictures in your day/night at MK. Wonderful job!!

kwitcherkicken, what camera do you use?
I have a Nikon D300s. I had a D100 for about 5 years, and honestly, I killed it. I murdered the on-camera flash (luckily I had an external flash) and I had some major dust issues on my CCD that I just couldn't get rid of. :sad2: Last August, I photographed a wedding weekend for DH's cousin (a destination wedding in Frankenmuth, MI) so I had to upgrade. Since then, I've put about 15,000 images through it... :rolleyes1

Beautiful photos! They really do look so crisp! I love the ones of the Electrical Parade with the castle behind it. So which shot did you really want to get with the backdrop? I'm guessing it is of Pete's Dragon. That one turned out fabulous! I also love all of the shots of Wishes. I think that ended up being a great viewing angle. I hope you get warmed up before you have to head back out in the morning.

Well, now I'm glad I can't sleep. Great updates! I am in awe of your photography :worship: I'm trying hard to learn night time shooting. I think I need some new lens's. If you hold a class, I'm in :goodvibes

Carey

Sorry you couldn't sleep! But thank you for the kind comments. I feel like I have come a long way with my photography, but definitely not ready to teach classes! :lmao: Most of the time I feel like I know just enough to be dangerous! Actually, I feel like I understand it all in my head........... but still have to think really hard to put it into action.

I actually learned it all hanging out in the photography forum here on the DIS. First I lurked a while reading all the questions posted by others, then reached a point where I didn't care if I looked stupid.... and started asking. Everyone there is SO patient with beginners and love to help.

DING DING! We have a winner! :cool1: On both counts. Yes, I was excited to hear them say the performers were coming down for photos. I had seen an occasional photo posted of the show performers but had never lucked into the opportunity myself. And heck, we would still have plenty of chances to see that show!

And yes..... I chose our spot that night just to see Cindy's carriage pass in front of the castle. I snapped away hoping to get Cindy looking my way, maybe even the Fairy Godmother. Fortunately my small camera buffer didn't "busy" up at the wrong moment! When I reviewed the photos at home, I was holding my breath until I finally found the one with both looking my way! :dance3:

Fantastic trip report! Your photos are amazing... I am definitely going to check out the photog thread on here. Last but absolutely not least, you have an amazing sewing talent! I'm superbly impressed with those gowns that Katie gets to wear!!!

Many thanks! As I mentioned above, the photography forum here

http://www.disboards.com/forumdisplay.php?f=97

is a great place to learn and be inspired. If nothing else, it's a great place to see some of the best Disney photography anywhere.

1) My goodness you are quick at providing updates. I have to tell my wife to stop making plans to go away for the weekends so that I can keep up :rotfl: I am several pages behind and just catching up from your lunch so pardon the late responses.

2) What a great table at the castle overlooking fantasyland and you got some great pictures with the other princesses besides your daughter. I can't tell if you needed a flash with the lighting there but if you did use one then you did a great job because, well I can't tell if you used one :)

3) Wow, if TTA had a line then boy that was one awfully crowded day. You did good to accomplish so much.

6) I am jealous of your holiday lights with the castle. We have yet to travel at that time of year to see it. Sigh, someday....perhaps I'll make it there. Your pictures are beautiful.

7) Great job with MSEP. The ability to use the high ISO really on your camera is such a wonderful thing. Great capture of the coach and you favorite character. Love it with the castle and the holiday lights in the background.

8) Finally, love the wishes pictures. It seems like at least the wind was not bad enough to cause slight movements with your camera in your tripod. Just outstanding shots.

So many great pictures in your day/night at MK. Wonderful job!!

1) Late? Nah, I just did my update last night. All you missed was a bunch of drama.......:rolleyes1

2) We usually end up by the windows in CRT, which I love, for both the view and the lighting. I usually try to position myself so the lighting is hitting from the side, and I can get some of those gorgeous windows in the background. I understand that view is completely blocked through June. So I'm glad we won't be there.......... OK..... just kidding. I'd still love to be there...... but I'd be disappointed with the lack of a view.

And yes, I used my flash. But I do totally feel inept at flash photography, so do appreciate the kind comment. The one thing I've been doing is dialing the flash down so it just fills in the shadows and doesn't wash the subject out.

3) I think of the title of your 2009 trip report every time I get on Peter Pan now! That was my first keeper ever from that ride. But I didn't use manual focus. I haven't practiced with manual focus, so didn't want to experiment there. I think there was just enough contrast with Wendy's blue dress for the camera to lock on. But the rest of the ride it never locked in focus. What I want is that dang clock tower. That will definitely require manual focus.

4) I had fun in the Hall of Presidents swapping back and forth between my wide angle and my zoom.

I just checked the EXIF on the HM heads. I apparently left my 17-55 f/2.8 on in there, but dialed the ISO up to 6400. I'm not sure why I left that one on. I typically would have put on the 30mm f/1.4. But at 30mm I never would have gotten all 5. So we'll just say I was planning for that shot.....:rotfl2:

5) Thank you! It was a fun little parade. And the sky made it worth sitting there in the cold. I was happy with how those turned out. I used a flash, but kept it dialed down a bit. I was concerned about everything looking really fake bright against the darkening sky.

6) Well, I'm jealous you have a return trip planned already, so I guess we're even, right??? :lmao: Seriously though....... it's definitely worth planning something for that time of year. It is absolutely breathtaking. I still remember my first glace of the castle lights from the monorail in 08. Just amazing, even from that distance.....

7) DING DING! :cool1: We have another winner! Yep. The coach with Fairy Godmother is what I was after. Proof positive that if you snap enough frames, one will likely turn out! But I definitely needed the higher ISO here to get a fast enough shutter speed. The noise reduction in LR3 really has been a huge improvement for me this past year too. I would be afraid to use those higher ISO's without the NR. I think I went to 3200 for the MSEP.

8) I really do like my tripod. It did get a good workout on this trip. It's nice and tall, and also small and lightweight, so it's not as sturdy as would be ideal. But I knew that going in. My 2 priorities were height and size since I use it most at Disney.

:rolleyes1

LOL! :rotfl2: Just loved it right to death, did you?

I know what you mean about wearing them out. I have had a DSLR since 2004. I never really knew how to USE it until recently. But even on full auto, I loved it and have used it to bits. I have kept mine under an extended warranty from the first day in 04, and have work out a bunch of them. Thankfully, each one was replaced with the newer model available.

Where did you get all that dust? I worried a lot about dust on our trip through the Southwest last year. After all, many of those amazing rock formations were made through wind erosion.

Your pictures are just AWESOME!!!!!!!

Thank you! :flower3:

Beautiful pictures. As well as a talented seamstress you are also a very talented photographer!

Thank you too! :flower3:

I really loved Pete's Dragon too, but it was Cindy's carriage.

One of the advantages of stalking the photography forum is that you get to see all sorts of examples from others. That's how I settled on being in front of the castle for the parade.

We actually made it back to the Magic Kingdom the next morning on time for early park entry. Not to worry........ there was no attempt at opening the park......... I knew we had to do that early in the trip since we'd wear out as the trip went on........

So where were we were headed before park opening?

Did it warm up the next day?

Believe it or not, we had an even longer day ahead of us, so we crashed the moment we got back to the room.

LOL! :rotfl2: Just loved it right to death, did you?
Pretty much. Granted, I was shooting a few weddings, and sports, and taking pictures of my first born... family stuff, Christmas stuff, etc. It wasn't the first Nikon I killed. My old film camera, well, I wore out the rewind mechanism in it. By the end, I had to stuff the camera into a dark tent and MANUALLY pull the film out... What a sad, sad, end to MY first camera...

I tell all my 4-Hers to sit down and really play with their cameras, ESPECIALLY the white balance feature. It drives me nuts to see pictures that aren't balanced (blame it on one of my instructors at school...). Heck, when I started shooting basketball this winter, I was getting mad at the pics I was taking at MY school's gym. No matter what I did, the pictures were a nasty shade of yellow. I finally sent out a bunch of emails to find out what kind of light bulbs they used - that gave me enough info to dial in the proper balance. Everyone thought I was bonkers.

As for the dust... it's solely due to age and changing the lenses out. I switch (quite regularly) between a 24-85mm and an 80-200mm. On occasion, I'll use my fish eye (16mm) or my 105mm. Just like they say *S* happens, well, so does dust.

I have often bemoaned the fact that I wasn't digital when my kids were babies. Just imagine the possibilities........

And basketball really IS one of the hardest sports, isn't it? Such fast action in such terrible lighting......... I LOVE  that you went after your answer though!

I think it was basketball that finally sent me on my quest to conquer my DSLR. I had a nice flash and was just using that and the auto mode. Some of the time though, the flash wouldn't refresh in time for the next shot. That led me to the photography forum to find out what was wrong with my flash....... Turns out most of them recommended not using a flash at all. Once I started investigating, lots of "lightbulbs" started going off in my head and I started piecing it all together.

I worried every time I changed lenses out in the dusty southwest. But I couldn't be there and NOT used the camera to its fullest. I like your attitude on it though...... DUST happens.

Wow! really amazing pictures! :worship:

The pictures of the castle changing color, the ELP and Wishes are breathtaking! A DSLR is on my "one day" wish list. As a fellow scrapbooker, good/great photos are why I take multiply shots with my point and shoot camera, because even with digital, it takes a lot of good shots to get a great shot!

1) Late? Nah, I just did my update last night. All you missed was a bunch of drama.......:rolleyes1

I saw that nonsense and did not want to bring it up again. Thankfully it went away.

2) We usually end up by the windows in CRT, which I love, for both the view and the lighting. I usually try to position myself so the lighting is hitting from the side, and I can get some of those gorgeous windows in the background. I understand that view is completely blocked through June. You did a great job with the lighting and controlling the flash. :thumbsup2
It is not easy to set it correctly. Do you try bouncing the flash ever? You can get good results if the situation allows for it.

After being beaten into submission on that ride in 2009 I gave up on autofocus since it was not a happening thing for me. You did good to get it to lock on Wendy. I have switched to manual focus now so that now I can say that I have full control of my growing collection of blurry pictures from that blasted ride. My ineptitude with manual focus really comes to light.

I just checked the EXIF on the HM heads. I apparently left my 17-55 f/2.8 on in there, but dialed the ISO up to 6400. I'm not sure why I left that one on. great...ahem...planning :rotfl:
Actually, I have been able to get away with f/2.8 on some components of that ride. Especially with the ISO dialed up.

5) Thank you! It was a fun little parade. And the sky made it worth sitting there in the cold. I was happy with how those turned out. I used a flash, but kept it dialed down a bit. I was concerned about everything looking really fake bright against the darkening sky.

Another good job controlling the flash :thumbsup2

I am not big on the huge crowds and I expect my florida weather to be warm. If only they can have a "Celebrate Christmas in the Summer Week". I would be all over it. For now though I'll just have to drool over your pictures.

I see you subscribe to my method of stacking the odds in your favor for a good shot :) I hear so many positive things about LR. I only use photoshop elements + neat image plug in. I may need to look into LR.

8) I really do like my tripod. It did get a good workout on this trip. It's nice and tall, and also small and lightweight, so it's not as sturdy as would be ideal. But I knew that going in. My 2 priorities were height and size since I use it most at Disney.

I would like to know which tripod you use if you don't mind. I could use more height on mine. Especially when I am staked out on Main Street and just before the show starts some taller people move in front of me.

I got a few pages behind and now I am working on catching up. The move it shake parade pics are so cool .I love that it is truning night. it gives the whol parade a different look. You lighting and fireworks shots are excellent. I never bring my tripod. I probably should. I think I am going to be missing both MSEP and Wishes because our CRT dinner is at 9:30, the parade starts at 9 and Wishes at 10. I keep looking for an earlier dinner time, but I know I'm pretty much out of luck there.

So glad this TR has been able to get back to the actual trip, and not the drama that some people feel the need to create! BTW way to go Jen! :worship: Maybe you should become a PI instead of a TA!

Totally off topic, but I used to date a guy...who I now realize was a total jerk..:rotfl2: amyways. at the end of the relationship we had problems and he said he was going to take a few days away to think things over. I was pretty sure he was "messing" around with another girl. After not being able to reach him at all over the few days, and he not being where he said he would be I played detective. I knew he only stayed in Marriot Hotels, so I called Marriot and asked if he was listed. They said they need a city to find him, and I thought fast and remembered he had been talking about taking the kids and I to Kings Island before the summer ended. (In Cinccinnatti) So I said Kings Island area and sue enough...he was there and had 2 rooms. One for the new gals kids. They patched me through to the room and as you can guess, he was very surprised to get a call from me! :lmao: And of course the relationship wasd then over. He married that gal a few months later and she left him right after their one year anniversary! :thumbsup2

Ny friends and family are always amazed the I actually found him and then had the nerve t ocall the room. :woohoo:

Me too! :thumbsup2

I noticed that you didn't say all expenses paid cruise! :rolleyes1 I do plan on redeeming it this month.
Skip opened his latest credit card bill yesterday and saw the trip insur. charge. He said he was puzzled by it and called and asked what it was, and the guy told him that "Jennifer" had arranged it. So Skip said, I better ask my wife then. He wanted to know why I would buy it. DUH!! First off we have bought it every trip except one, and second...we are already having problems...who wants to take any chances that things go badly on this trip. He asked what it covered and I gave him a generic list, and then he realized it was a good thing

Do you use your flash on the camera, or external flash. I have an external, and sometimes I take great pics, and then others come out shadowy. I am still trying to figure out how to get some good shots in the Castle, since lighting is so poor.
Do you have a book on lightroom? I have a bootleg copy of CS3 from a friend and on the CD came lightroom. I actually unistalled it, because I had no idea what it was. I am wondering if I should give it a try (reinstall it), but have no clue how to go about using it. I think I would like the noise reduction feature.

Great TR and great dresses!! Love your photos as well. i have 2 little princesses and we are going for our first time in September, hopefully we will meet as many characters as you and Katie!!!

Thank you! Just do your homework on where to find the characters and I'm sure you will. There are a few DIS members who keep web sites with character information. If you have any questions on where to find certain characters, just post a thread on the theme park forum.

I agree with Becc1, you are an awesome seamstress AND photograher! :worship:

Thank you so much! It really does help to have a DSLR for the ELP. Low light coupled with movement is different from low light photos of something that stands still like a castle, or even fireworks (different kind of movement). For those shots, even a point and shoot will work, but you really need a tripod.

I really hate when you have to make that sort of tough decision at Disney. Maybe you can be watching for something to open up at Akershus too so you could pass on CRT. That would be a tough call for me though. I LOVE eating in the castle.

Since both CRT and Akershus require a cc hold, people do cancel.

Normally you could get a back view of some of the fireworks at that hour from CRT, but you probably know they have those windows blocked right now because of the refurb on the back side of the castle.

I hardly ever use the built-in flash on the camera. I have an external flash I use. I do bounce my flash sometimes, and LOVE the results. But I would totally be out of my element trying to bounce it in the castle. I had a friend try to do that once in the castle and half the shot was dark and half was light. So that definitely made me a little gun shy. If you're near the windows, just be sure the light is hitting the character and Claire properly. I always choose my seat at our table based on how I want to set up my shot. And I'm not afraid to ask the character to step out in the aisle or turn a different direction if needed. It feels a little awkward, but they have always been very accommodating. I mean, it's not like EVERYONE in the room is asking! :rotfl2:

What I typically do is turn down the flash exposure compensation a little so it's not too harsh. I have much to learn about flash photography though.

I don't know about the older versions of Lightroom, but I think it had a great reputation even before the current LR3. I don't have a book but really need one. Mostly I have just focused on a limited number of adjustments and adjust the sliders until I like it...... exposure, brightness, fill light, contrast, saturation, sharpening and noise reduction. There's a lot more I still have to figure out though. I'm waiting for LR3 for Dummies to come out.........:rolleyes1

For anyone looking at these programs, there are great discounts available if you have school age kids. I think I got mine through journeyed.com

Yep, I get the half dark shots too. Especially with verticle shots. I can't figure out how to place the flace when I take those. I actually played for a bout 45 minutes the other night I kept flashing and flashing over and over taking dumbe pictures. I think Skip was getting mad, he kept giving me the look to stop it. :rotfl:

1) I saw that nonsense and did not want to bring it up again. Thankfully it went away.

2) You did a great job with the lighting and controlling the flash. :thumbsup2
It is not easy to set it correctly. Do you try bouncing the flash ever? You can get good results if the situation allows for it.

3) After being beaten into submission on that ride in 2009 I gave up on autofocus since it was not a happening thing for me. You did good to get it to lock on Wendy. I have switched to manual focus now so that now I can say that I have full control of my growing collection of blurry pictures from that blasted ride. My ineptitude with manual focus really comes to light.

4) great...ahem...planning :rotfl:
Actually, I have been able to get away with f/2.8 on some components of that ride. Especially with the ISO dialed up.

5) Another good job controlling the flash :thumbsup2

6) I am not big on the huge crowds and I expect my florida weather to be warm. If only they can have a "Celebrate Christmas in the Summer Week". I would be all over it. For now though I'll just have to drool over your pictures.

7) I see you subscribe to my method of stacking the odds in your favor for a good shot :) I hear so many positive things about LR. I only use photoshop elements + neat image plug in. I may need to look into LR.

8) I would like to know which tripod you use if you don't mind. I could use more height on mine. Especially when I am staked out on Main Street and just before the show starts some taller people move in front of me.

1) Me too...... :rolleyes1

2) I sort of discussed flash answering Jen in the past post. I know just enough to be dangerous. I have had some pretty capable people in the photography forum try to teach me, but I'm just not there yet. I feel pretty good about using my camera for anything BUT flash photography. Once I need to use the flash........ my mind turns to mush. I think I need a good book on flash to slowly work my way through. I think someone said Bryan Peterson is coming out with one on flash photography, so I want to check that out.

Until then, I'll just keep trying to get my subjects into the best possible natural light and add dial the flash down a bit.

We missed my daughter's team photos for basketball because we were at Disney....... so I took photos for everyone in the school gym. I bounced my flash there and was really happy with the results, so I'll probably keep trying.

3) I'm in the same boat. I need to really keep trying my manual focus so I can get comfortable with it. It needs to be second nature to get it to work on that ride.

4) I really do think I'm going to have to stick with the 1.4 though if I want to break out of my rut of taking the same 3 photos each time through! We did ride it again on our last day. I wonder what I did that day! :rotfl2:

5) Thank you! I was really happy with those shots.

6) Too funny... I have often wished they would do Star Wars weekend in the winter! I'd love to go but just don't think I could survive the heat.

You ought to consider early November. I think you're less likely to freeze, and you can still see all the lights.

I've been in record hot, and now I've been in record cold. And I'll take the record cold any day. I'm such a crybaby in the heat!

7) Sure do! It's one of the best things about digital photography! I couldn't afford it when I had to develop all that film!

8) After much research last year, I settled on the Luxi-L tripod. I had 2 priorities: Tall and easy to carry around. This one is 63" fully extended. And it folds down to about 15 1/2" and comes in a carrying bag.

The down side is that the legs are twist lock, and I prefer the flip-lock. So it's a little harder to make sure it's all locked tight.

It's not tall enough to get over EVERY head, but if you find the edge of a curb to be on, that helps too. My best shots were later in the trip from the curb along Main Street right across from Casey's. There was a tall man standing right in front of me, but with the curb AND the tall tripod, I was good! :thumbsup2

For a travel tripod, I've been very happy. :goodvibes
