I do beleive there are a few folks around here still shooting film from time to time. I am just starting again using a very low tech camera and then digitizing the negatives using my recently acquired Epson V500 scanner (thanks for the info on that Gdad!). While I am liking the shots, I am having a big learning curve with the delayed feedback of waiting to shoot the roll and then get it developed :scared1: - I have gotten used to that instant satisfaction of a quick chimping session with my DSLR.
In any event, I do not think I am the only one out there shooting film (even if its a toy camera), and thought I would start a thread to share photos and thoughts on shooting film. All camera brands are welcome from large and medium format, all the way down to the toy (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/462619-REG/Lomography_947_Fisheye_No_2.html) I am shooting with. So please feel free to post or chime in - all are welcome here!
Starting off, my camera is 35mm with a fixed circular 10mm fisheye lens (f8 apreture only) with two shutters settings: 1/100 and bulb (as long as you keep your finger down). It also has an easy setting to do multiple exposures. I am loving it and looking forward to brining it to WDW when we are down next.
Vive le Grain! ;)
Starting off - when did I start looking like Alfred Hitcock?

And using a toy to take a picture of a toy - my train to nowhere.

Those are some very nice shots Jeff! Quite the assortment of film bodies you have worked with. Do you still have all those camreas, or have you pared down your collection?
Another from the Fisheye 2.

The last round of film I scanned was from my Kodak Brownie Hawkeye. I've got a dozen or so rolls I shot recently (various cameras) waiting to be scanned still.

Thanks- no I like to buy and sell old film bodies a lot. You can find some good deals on stuff on Ebay. I let the Leica and Hassey go- still have the others- and am on the lookout for a Fuji GA645W and a Yashica T5 at the moment. ;)

Good luck on your search! After seeing some of your film shots, I am getting a definite itch to get a medium format. I am thinking I will go with something more substantial than a Holga, but who knows?

Holga's can be a lot of fun. Like the Brownie though, you gotta be willing to let go of the control. I find that type of shooting a fun break from the extreme control of my DSLR.
This is from a roll I found when I pulled my Holga out last summer to use. It's from 2003. That baby is now 8. I've no idea why I shot half frame.

I would highly recomend a Yashica 124g- especially if you like a waist level viewfinder. About $100-$150 on Ebay.

Now I gotta get my pinhole shots scanned!!! Anyone ever use or make a pinhole?
Mine was an old wax tin, about an inch thick and 4" diamter, I never measured it to see what my focus range was, but an indoor shot of a church was a 10 hour exposure! Its still at my art school on display, probably the best thing I ever produced...
I will scan it tomorrow if I can dig it ou of the storage room.

Another beautiful shot! You have to let me know the secret to getting kids to be so cooperative, my daughter is always up for having her picture taken, but my son... not so much!
I was looking at the Yashica after seeing your Little Pigeon River shot above. I also saw a locally advertised Bronica 645 that came with 2 lenses and a grip, but it might be a bit more than I need for the time being. Decisions, decisions... :scratchin
There is a lot of interesting stuff out there for sure. Something wide angle with decent quality on medium format is what I'm trying to find without breaking the bank- I think 45mm in medium format is equal to about 28mm in 35mm. Fuji has a few options at 45mm and 40mm but finding a bargain on one is tuff.

Bring on the pinholes Daisy14'sDH and photo_chick!
I haven't done any pinhole photography myself, but have been considering buying an extra body cap for my XTi to try some out. I have a couple locations I think would work well once summer rolls around. I would be really interested in seeing what you have done.
And a couple more Fishy pics from me of my kids.

That's why I was looking at this Bronica package - it included a 40mm F4 lens. Its more than I wanted to spend, but oh so tempting!

Oh sure, it doesn't have the image quality of medium format, but it's so much fun, and it will fit in your pocket, even with a full set of lenses! :thumbsup2
I've got a couple of my SLRs with half-shot rolls in them right now from my sister-in-law's wedding... a 3200 and a 400 ISO, both b/w... gotta finish them off and see how they turned out.

I have been wacthing Ebay for a Yashica mat 124G and, I don't know what's gotten into everyone's coffee, but they ain't selling for $150 anymore except for "as is, found this in a storage locker, don't know anything about cameras, but ask any question you want" :scared1:
I have also established there are no servicers of Yashica's anywhere near me, and people around here have been sending their's to Mark Hama for repair (which is great, but pricey when shipping to and from Canada). And as for the prices on Rolleis not being sold for parts :scared1::scared1:.
So now I am considering a Mamiya C330 as they are seeming to price the same as the Yashica. Anyone with experience with the Mamiya? I like the interchangeable lens and the bellows, but will also need to get a light meter which may not be required with the Yashica.
If anyone has experience with the Mamiya, I would love to hear it. My main goal is I would like to shoot 6x6 as opposed to 6x4.5, so if you have other suggestions, I would be happy to hear them as well.
Thanks!

I haven't used it for anything covert yet... but it would be good for that! (The wedding picks I mentioned were shot on a couple of my K1000s.)
I think the Pentax was the only true interchangeable-lens 110 SLR, but Minolta and maybe one or two others made fixed-lens SLR-types? I'm not sure off the top of my head.
I love using my Pentax 110, but the film is getting hard to find.
I bought a 10-pack of Fuji film last year after getting the camera. It was brand-new and from what I understand, one of the very last batches they'd make. The 10 rolls will probably last me a lifetime. :) I don't expect to actually take a ton of photos with it, but it is just so much fun to play with, and to appreciate on a purely mechanical level.

Yeah I just messaged a guy on craigs list about a yachika. Scary, he would tell me it worked but wanted $140 for it. Ouch.
mamiya... well I have an RB67 and a 645af. Both are great cameras. I have sekonic L358 light meter which costs more than my RB67. But you can also meter off a dslr or 35mm body which I do alot. But the mamiyas are good cameras.
Also not sure I would trust a meter in such an old camera. They where to get u in the ball park and often tend to be reliant on a specific and expensive battery type.

Groucho - you are a baa-ad man...showing enticing pictures like that.
That Pentax 110 SLR was so intriguing I did a search on EBay and found an entire Boxed Set (http://cgi.ebay.com/ASAHI-PENTAX-AUTO-110-SYSTYEM-KIT-BOX-/300525065845?pt=Film_Cameras&hash=item45f8b09675)with Camera, auto-winder (not working), 3 lenses (18, 24, 50mm), filters, flash, etc. for $110 or so (including a ridiculous shipping charge), hopefully I'll get it for that - no bids so far.
As a reasonably competent mechanical tinkerer I have high hopes of fixing the auto winder.
So now it's off to Google to try to find someplace that sells 110 cartridges...

I was aware of them but didn't see one in person until I was buying something off else off Craigslist and happened to find out that the guy had one. He wasn't selling but let me look at it and I feel in love and had to get one!
They generally can be had for pretty cheap. Mine actually came from Adorama's used department, $40 for the camera with three lenses and the original bag. It seems to work fine; although I did manage to break the winder. A little superglue and some wire for strength and it's better than new! The one thing I found that I had to do (which I didn't notice originally) was tighten down the screws on the lens mount; it was just a touch loose when I got it. You can find the manual on the internet if you want to know more. One interesting thing is that it has a 2x crop compared to 35mm - just like 4/3rd DSLR sensors! Yet it's tiny compared to those.
It is a joy to use though; wonderful dainty manual focus, a lens cap the size of a nickel, nice mechanical noises when taking a photo, etc.

Not that I can find.
There are a few places on the inter-web selling film that was manufactured as late as 2007 though.
EBay has various mid-200x dated rolls listed at ~$5 a 12 exposure cartridge and ~$10 for 24 exposure cartridges.
Not something to shoot your entire vacation with :-)

You can buy Fuji 200 speed, 2009 manufacture, here (http://www.frugalphotographer.com/cat110.htm) for $8.29/24 exposures. This is the stuff that I've got. I believe I bought a 10-pack off eBay; you may or may not be able to find more of it.
For developing, I think you've pretty much stuck with Dwayne's Photo.
The shot I posted was scanned directly off the negative with my Coolscan 4000. Scanning it is a bit cumbersome as I use the standard 35mm holders and move the negatives around inside the holder. (I do the same to scan disc film.) I believe that somebody makes a 110 holder, but it's ridiculously expensive, just like everything Coolscan-related! A good flatbed scanner like the Epsons may work just about as well and much easier.
You might actually get better results scanning the prints themselves, though; it seems that the grain is controlled better that way. (Same with disc film; the scanned images are quite noisy. Wet scanning may help but that's more work than I'm willing to put into it!)

You can reload 110 film casettes with 16mm film. I've not done it, but instructions are pretty easy to find online.
My dad handed the Pentax 110 down to me when I went to Washington DC in junior high, which was in the late 80's, so film was abundant still. But it was shelved for many years and I didn't really appreciate how unique it is until the last few years.

What I distinctly remember about the 110 camera my parents had was that we got it spefically for a Disney roadtrip and I actually got to use it (as long as I bought the film). The family camera before that was a Kodak brownie of some type that used single use flash bulbs. I wasn't allowed to use that camera as I was a bit indiscriminate in my shooting back then (as now :rotfl:).

Still searching for a medium format camera. Starting to consider the low tech alternatives again given the lack of reasonable priced TLRs around (which is what I would like). Thinking about the Diana F+ from those Lomography folks, but I think I will hold off a bit longer to see if a TLR comes up locally. In the meantime, I still have my Fisheye toy to share some shots from:
A night at the "Local" both shot on Bulb at about 4 seconds each using 400ISO film. I used my "sunny 16" table to give me the shutter and the turned out pretty good (exposure wise)

I will be picking it up tomorrow :cool1: and I am just trying to decide whether the first roll should be colour or black and white :confused3
In the meantime, here is a recent picture using the Lomography Fisheye 2

I just got back a roll of 220 E-6 (Slide Film) Color and let me tell you, if that doesn't make you love film, nothing will. It's a positive film so just hold it up to the light and you see everything in it's amazement!!
If you don't know, you can send 120 and 220 film in through wal-mart. Here in va, it goes to Fuji's SC plant, then to Dwaynes. I just paid $4.88 to get a roll of 220 E-6 Chrome developed, but it takes 2 weeks. A roll of 220 C-41 with prints was less than $4. But beware, I've had rolls come back unprocessed with light leaks from where they unrolled them and frames missing - the processing is not high quality. But now I have a Jobo, so I don't send anything off anymore.

Thanks for the processing tips - I will check with Walmart and Costco here. THere is a store close to my work that will process it, but I am not adverse to saving some cash if I can.
I picked up my Ricohflex Model VI - looks to be in very nice shape with nice clean lenses and viewfinder, but it needs a good CLA and the shutter is dead :sad1: Got it in to the local shop and should have it back by the end of the week with a 1 year warranty :). I have my roll of Ilford HP5 Plus 400 ready for action once I get it back.
In the meantime I will be cleaning up the various accessories that came with it: a 35mm film case, Proxar No. 1 close up lens kit, yellow filter, lens hood for the taking lens and some other stuff I am still trying to figure out :confused3.
One more scanned fisheye print of our DVC Home to keep things flowing!

Nice shot Danielle! I quite like the shapes and lines in the composition!
Another fisheye film shot while waiting on the Ricohflex.

Thanks. You never quite know what you'll end up with when you use a Holga, so some of that composition is blind luck.
Nice use of the fish on EE. I'm too busy being terrified of heights to get the camera out at all on there.

I know what you mean about the composition with the "toy" cameras. The Fisheye that I have doesn't even have a viewfinder, it has a "viewfinder attachment" that slides into the flash shoe and bears such little resemblance to the final shot that I don't even bother with it most times.
Here's another from that little EE ride. You can get some fun shots out of it when the light is good.

Grain Grubbers arise again! I have now done 2 rolls of film with my "new" TLR (it was manufactured about 7 years before I was born):
http://unboundedlight.zenfolio.com/img/v23/p122115753-5.jpg
One B&W (the "learning roll" ;)) and one colour. Thought I would share some of the colour shots. All the shots were taken using tripod and a cable release. All shots were 1/100 with the first two at F16 and the last F11 (relying on the sunny 16 rule for esposure :thumbsup2). These were scanned with an Epson Perfection V500.:

I am VERY happy with the images, but it is a slooooow camera - fastest shutter speed is 1/100. Also, a bit of vignetting at F16, but not too bad. I would really like to try some portraits, but need to find the right time (my daughter will still smile for the camera, and I think I can get her to sit still for 1/100 of a second if I catch her at the right time :)).
Thanks for looking!

Nice. I have an Argoflex 75 TLR. It leans more to the toy camera end of things with it's non-adjustable settings and bakelite build. You want a slow camera.. The Kodak Brownie Hawkeye has a shutter speed of about 1/50. It gets fun when you're shooting moving subjects. I think I posted a shot of my kids further up the thread that's from the Brownie.

Oooh! An Argoflex - I looked at one but got scared off by having to respool film for it.
1/50 on the Brownie? That makes my Ricohflex twice as fast :rotfl:.
I know what you mean on the moving subjects. A good chunk of my practice roll was with my daughter learning to ride her bike - lots of blurry stuff and a couple double exposures when I rushed to get a shot and forgot to advance the film.
I have to say I am somewhat surprised with how sharp the lens is in the Ricohflex -much sharper than I expected (but most of the medium format shots I have seen were Holga shots - not a fair comparison).

Yeah. The Holga has a cheap plastic lens, the film isn't held flush and many have a ton of light leaks so it makes for some funkiness and wicked vignetting. And every Holga is a little bit different. My Brownie has a plastic lens too but, motion blur aside, it's sharper than the Holga.
Re spooling film isn't that difficult once you do a few. Especially if you're experienced in the darkroom. Or you can buy it re spooled already from B&H and a few other places.

How nice- congrats on the new camera. I have a 'Super' Ricohflex that looks very similar (it goes to 1/200!) but I've only used it a few times. I prefer my Yashica. I love the shots you got with it though!

Thanks! 1/200? That's too fast for me :rotfl:. I think the Super is about 2-3 years newer model than mine. I can see why you prefer the Yashica though, it's a bit more versatile than the Ricohflex.
I am having fun with this camera. Its very basic, but this has the advantage of making me think more about the shot (composition, light, exposure I want) which I believe will translate to a more thoughtful approach with my DSLR as well. My film days were primarily point and shoot, as was my early digital shooting. Now a lot of my shooting with my DSLR has been catching the action (i.e. kids). The instant feedback on a DSLR allows for mistakes to be made and corrected quicky, so you don't have to think too much ahead of the shot if you don't want too. Using this TLR is helping me train myself to take the time and be patient with the shot as I will only have the one chance. I am also starting to think "square" on the crop, which is a bit different as well.
My next quest is filters - I am on the prowl for series 6 drop in filters to use with the push on filter holder that came with the camera.
Here is another shot - we are experiencing major flooding up here, and this is a flooded creek where I usually bike over on my way yo work. The bridge is about 10-15 feet under the water right now.

After a few years of using a Canon DSLR, I sold it and went back to my Canon SLR using the same lenses, shooting mainly black & white.
What I find with film versus digital is that you think of your composition, lighting, exposure and depth instead of just taking a trillion pictures "because it's free".
I love analog.

Time for a bit of a bump. Some new shots from the Ricohflex from early June that I recenlty scanned. I am loving the cropping options when shooting medium format.
Some shots of a local bridge in the early evening using Fuji Reala 120 film (100 ISO).

This thread fell well off the radar! Hope to kick start it with a couple new shots taken with the Ricohflex TLR. These are some long exposures (papa got a brand newish light meter!) which are just scanned from 5x5 prints. I have not had a chance to scan the negatives yet, so hopefully these are ok. Both are in black and white (Ilford HPS4 120 ISO 125), and taken with a red filter on the taking lens (it drops about 2 and a bit stops of light).
Both were taken at the sculpture garden at our local park.

Resurrecting a thread. It's been a while since we've seen any film.
This was shot with a Calumet 4x5 view camera in the studio. It was an exercise playing with the tilt, shift and swing to get as much of the ears on the plane of focus as possible.

Nice shot! I like it in black and white. So, did you acquire a 4x5 camera, or just had a chance to play with one? I had a chance to acquire one recently, but couldn't justify the purchase when some other unanticipated expenses arose.
And thanks for reviving the thread as I have a few more I can share:
Ricohflex Model VI, Ilford B&W 120 film, F8 for 2 "mississippis", scanned from a 5x5 print (too lazy to hook up the film scanner).

I have access to a 4x5 right now and am considering buying one soon. The first time I used the 4x5 I was just totally blown away by the resolution. We think these high megapixel digital cameras can capture so many details, but the full frame and smaller sensors still can't touch large format film.

05-11-2012, 11:06 AM
That's why I am liking my old medium format TLR - the amount of resolution is great, especially off a film scan. There are some local photographers shooting 4x5 around here and the amount of detail they can get is phenomonal, especially when shooting cityscapes or from the air.
Got another one to share:
