Parks/Icons ~ 2" Words & 4" Altered Letters Swap

Information for the Parks/Icons Swap (Groups in the next post)
Sign ups will open on Friday Feb. 4th starting at 9am EST. Due date is April 30th.

Newbies are welcome. If you haven't swapped with us on this board before, then I will limit you to 2 groups.

There are 2 different types of groups listed:
1.) The first set is for 2-inch embellished letters

After sign-ups, please pm me your name, DIS name, mailing address, email address and phone number when you sign up (I will only use these in an emergency).

Groups 1-22 are 2 inch letter groups: The letters each swapper will individually make can be combined to spell out the entire word on your scrapbook page. Make your specified letter(s) 2 inches tall with a shadow/mat behind it. Embellish your letter(s) at least once to go along with the theme of the title. You may use patterned paper or solid colored cardstock. Please be creative and use colors that represent your group selection.
***IMPORTANT NOTE*** For Longer titles, please TRY to choose a font that is NOT WIDE. The Mickey Font Cricut Cartridge is a wider font for example. Width is a tough one, because the fewer letters are in a word, the wider we can go. Make your individual letters with the assumption that the longer completed words would expand across a 2 page layout. Sometimes you end up with words on both the top and the bottom of a layout. Take the word "Frontierland" for example. That is 12 letters, in order to fit across a two-page layout, the letters need to be a smaller width than 2” (24”/12 letters minus a little so there can be a gap between letters when they are laid out). But with the words "Magic Kingdom", you could theoretically put “Magic” at the top of a layout, and "Kingdom" at the bottom, so you can go wider with your letters. Just be mindful of how the word will fit on a page. Basically, this means that not everyone can use a wide font like the Mickey font, with a large single word. Keep in mind also that we may need to overlap letters slightly for titles with even longer words like "Adventureland" (13 letters) so embellish them accordingly. Shorter words like "Africa" for example are not an issue--it's just the longer single words that get tricky. If you are unclear on this or have questions, please ask me.

Groups A-E are 4 inch altered letter groups: Make a 4 inch letter, matted, and embellished at least once. You may use patterned and solid colored paper. Please be creative. You are making the first letter of the word only. An example is: You are in Group C Epcot Countries and chose France. You will make a 4 inch F and when everyone gets it back they can add "rance" to it anyway they want or just use the "F" on their page to represent France.

Suggestions for embellishments include:
Die cuts, stickers, stickles, flock, ink, chalk, brads, charms, flowers, eyelets, ribbon/fiber, sewing, tearing, embossing, stamping, clipart, additional layers of paper beyond double mats and specialty paper (such as embossed, glitter, Bling).

Packaging: Place your completed elements in a Ziploc bag THAT FITS YOUR LETTER(S). The bag MUST close. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE use a bag that closes. Bags that do not close make the sorting harder than it needs to be. One piece falls out of a bag and then I have to check every bag to see where it goes. Label your bag with your DISname, name and group letter. Do not address your items to a particular swapper. (That makes it harder for me to sort!) Your label should look like this:

For All 2 inch Letter Groups: Please put identical letters from a group into a sandwich size bag. Please be sure it is labeled clearly and that none of your letters are sticky or have pieces that could break off or damage another letter. For example: If you choose 2 letters for Group 1 DISNEYWORLD and you make 6 R’s and 6 E ‘s then you will put all 6 R’s in a labeled sandwich size baggie and all 6 E’s in a different labeled sandwich size baggie and put BOTH of those bags in a Quart size baggie that is labeled. If you want to bag every single letter individually, you can but you don’t need to unless your letters are sticky or fragile and need to be separate to keep them intact and keep items safe.

For All 4 inch Letter Groups: Please put each letter in its own labeled baggie and put all the baggies into a QUART or GALLON size labeled baggie. Everything needs to be in a separate bag for this.

Mailing:
* You may send to me, by any method you choose unless you are mailing after April 2 [note this is before the mail by date]. Then, you must mail Priority WITH Delivery Confirmation.
* I prefer to send to you using flat rate boxes/envelopes from the USPS. Please include enough postage in your package for return shipping. The rates are: Envelope or Small Box (9”x6”x2”) - $5.20, Medium/Standard box – $10.95, Large - $14.95. PLEASE NOTE THE RECENT INCREASE IN SHIPPING RATES.
* If you want your items shipped to you with DC, please include the $.70, and a filled out slip. I will not mail the items back with delivery confirmation unless you include the $.70 and the filled out DC form.
* Please include a label (can be the priority label completed with your info or a small address label) for me to use to return your items to you.
* DO NOT include click-it/ship-it postage. I will not be able to use it since it is only good on the day it was printed, and from the location it was printed.

Required check-ins will be:
February 11th (verify groups and pm info to me)

March 1st check-in please with status update

March 16th check-in with status update & last call for angels

April 2nd update with your mailing status

April 16th - mail by date (must send priority with delivery confirmation if mailing today)
Due to me by April 30th

I will pm you with a reminder if you forget to check in. After 48 hours with no response I will request angels for your spots. If you are going on vacation or will be out of town, please check in early. Please do not sign up for more than you can handle. If you need an angel, please ask for one as soon as possible.

Some groups have a 2 inch icon so that groups are an even number of members. If you sign up for the 2 inch icon it should be a die cut (not single layer) or a paper piecing that is a minimum of 2 inches tall. It should represent your group theme and be embellished at least once.

No worries.. .all of us make mistakes.. for the 2" letters.. I used the jewelry size for the individiual and then I don't remember what type of bag I used to bag the little baggies in... As someone who has sorted letters, yup!

If everyone used jewelry bags for their individual letter, sandwich size would work. But some people use snack or sandwich bags for their individual ones and those do not fit 5/6 baggies in one sandwich bag.

Looks like a fun swap, but I am swap free in 2011. Must use what I have.

Question about these directions:

***IMPORTANT NOTE*** For Longer titles, please try to choose a font that is NOT WIDE. The Mickey Font Cricut Cartridge is a wide font for example so you wouldn’t want to use that one. In addition, do not make any of your embellishments hang off the sides of your letter. For example: you can put a Mickey on the top of the letter or behind your letter—but NOT on the side hanging off the letter. This would cause the spacing between the letters in the word to need to be more spread out. If a swapper needs to overlap letters in a title for their page layout, having embellishments hanging off the sides makes it hard to do.

Only the I and 1st S are okay? The others all have stuff hanging off or are a wide font.

Most of these words are long. I really don't think any of these words will fit in a 12" space I am assuming it will have to go across 2 pages or at the top and bottom of one page.

That would be fine and sounds really cute too! I'm not sure how to say what's in my head but I just want to ask swappers to be sure we are conscious of the fact that the words are long and space is limited. How would you word that? I need to revise this and I'm not sure what to say.

I have always hosted my swaps, with the assumption that the words would expand across a 2 page layout. I don't think I spelled it out, but when I took the photos, I would lay them out over a two page spread. Sometimes you end up with words on both the top and the bottom of a layout. The only time that I asked people to really watch their sizes was when we did Contemporary in the Resort Swap, because of mycutiepatootie's monorail "ends."

I looked back and here is what I wrote

Width: The tough one, because the fewer letters are in a word, the wider we can go. Take the word Contemporary. That is 12 letters, in order to fit across a two-page layout, the letters need to be smaller than 2” (24”/12 letters minus a little so there can be a gap between letters when they are laid out). But with Grand Floridian, you could theoretically put “Grand” at the top of a layout, and Floridian at the bottom, so you can go wider with your letters. Be mindful of how the word will fit on a page. Basically, this means that not everyone can use a wide font like the Mickey font, with a large word.

hhmmm, maybe just keep to the skinnier fonts and be aware of our embellishments hanging over the sides....what if they made 2 mock ups to see how they looked side by side before making the whole batch?

I revised my description for the 2 inch letters. Thanks girls! I took out the part about the embellishments hanging off the sides...I don't think it'll be a problem and I don't want to stiffle creativity. Is this better or do you think I need to re-write it further?

I think its fine! everyone just needs to be aware of the spacing and keep their embellishments skinny too!! and that the words might be spread out over both pages.

I think I want to give this a try! It sounds like fun and all the example pieces are great! So...I sign up for a letter and I make 6 of that letter. Is that it?! (I read through the first post, but after a full day of Goodwilling On Half Price Day, my brain is fried!

So then, what do I get...one of everything? :confused3

I'm so glad you are going to jump in and try out a swap.:banana: Please feel free to send me an email or pm anytime if you have questions along the way. Read ALL of the first post and it explains alot. I needed guidance and had lots of questions when I was just getting starting swapping and everyone is so helpful so you can just post your questions here or contact me.

The basic idea is that take a look at the possible open spots and figure out what you are interested in. As a "newbie" swapper you are limited to 2 groups for your first swap so that you don't get overwhelmed...kinda starting slow and testing the waters. Since these little letters are pretty fast and easy to make and aren't big kits with lots of pieces, IF you want to try out more than 2 groups I'd be okay with that. I just need to check with the mods first to be sure.

So say you want to sign up for Grp. 1b DisneyWorld. You would post that you want to sign up for that group and indicate which 2 letters that you want to make from the available ones. Say you choose letters Y and D. Then once the sign ups close Wed. morning you will double check that you're signed up for the correct groups and pm me your name, dis name, adddress, phone, email etc. that I'll keep on file. I'll send you my info. too. You can start making your pieces then. So (for example) Grp. 1b you'd make 6 Y's and 6 D's. Most people use their Cricut to cut the letter and the shadow. You will make it 2 inches in size (tall), make capital letters, and use papers/colors that represent your group. Sturdy cardstock for the shadow is recommended so that your letter is not going to get damaged in shipping. Then you embellish your letter(s) however you'd like. You will package up all of your letters according to the packaging/shipping directions in the first post and ship them to me. Be sure to put your own in there too--I held out my pieces in my very first swap...oops. When you get the swap returned to you in the mail you'll get all the letters everyone else made for the word DISNEYWORLD and you'll have a complete title.

There are photos on the first post with examples of the 2 inch letters and 4 inch letters as complete words so you can see.

So let me know what you're interested in. It sounds complicated, but it's sorta the same for every swap and once you learn the ropes you've got it down. I'm so happy that you want to join us. I loved getting to chat during the online crop!

I made a few changes to some of the groups below in order to combine/fill groups. Hope it's okay with everyone...let me know if not.

I added a 2 inch icon to groups 10 and 10a CASTLE so now everyone needs to make 7 instead of 6. This allowed me to fit in our 2 lonely swappers hanging out in a castle group by themselves...and filled the groups.

I combined groups for: TOONTOWN, AFRICA, & PARTNERS since they are shorter words. So now everyone will only have 1 letter they are responsible for in these groups instead of 2. I personally think it's alot easier to make the same letter a couple more times then be responisible for 2 totally different designs. Is this okay?

I also combined 2 groups into 1 For group 16 TREE OF LIFE. Everyone only needs to be responsible for 1 letter now instead of 2. I filled the group by me taking the word OF for my spot. I'll do them in the same color and weld the two letters together. I kinda think this would look better to have the altered letters stand out more for TREE LIFE. If this isn't okay with you...let me know.

I got that Lego paper a really long time ago at mousememories.com I think...or maybe at my LSS which has since closed. Ummm...it may be older than DS5.

Hi everyone! I'm back!:wave2: After 12 hours of travel yesterday, we finally rolled in the driveway at 2 am. I'm going on less than 5 hrs. of sleep because I had to get DD's off to school his morning. BUT, other than a long travel day yesterday we had a fabulous time! (Our last leg of the flight was 4 hrs. late because it was still trying to get out of another airport in Detroit where there was a bunch of snow I guess. Eventually it made it to Charlotte and we got on for the last part of the travel to get home).

The weather was great--sunny and 80 degrees and crystal blue green carribean water. It was awesome and we really enjoyed laying by the pool and walking on the beach finding shells for the kiddos back home. The beach was private and out on a pennisula in the water so we never had anyone able to get in to the resort to try to sell you their crafts or beg you to get your hair braided or sell you drugs etc. on the beach. We did the kayaks and Hobie Cat sailing, and did a bike ride to town for local shopping. The resort had a zillion starfish in the water on this one section and we enjoyed seeing them several times a day. The bed was SO COMFY and we got to sleep in until 8am most days--yeah mon! We were thrilled with our room and the Secrets resort overall. The people in Jamaica were so friendly! Each night the resort brought in local talent for a show. We saw a reggae band, cultural dancers who did fire dancing and some pretty incredible acrobatic stunts, and a steel drum band. All of them were very good and we were impressed. All inclusives are not really known for their food, but we felt it was better than we expected. There were 9 on property restaraunts and we got dressed up in the evening and went out for dinner and the show afterwards. Our favorite was the japanese restaraunt with the chef cooking at the grill as you all sit around him--yum! And the jerk chicken was yummy too! My favorite drink was called Bob Marley--it is red frozen strawberry daq. on the bottom, then mango frozen daq. for the middle layer, and some green frozen alcohol stuff for the top layer. Very fruity and refreshing. Aah!

Nice job ladies on your swap letters. I am loving what I'm seeing so far!!! I'll try to get a slideshow up and get pictures of everyones work on it over the next few days. Look for that in post #1 or 2. it seems you girls are flying and some might be ready to mail soon??? You can send to me whenever you are ready...I have an empty closet in the guest room that I can keep everything in so it will be safe...no worries.

Please see post #2 at the bottom. I've decided to make a running list of the pg. numbers you can reference to see photos that swappers have posted. There are just an incredibly HUGE number of individual 2 inch letters...and I fear that if I try to do a slideshow along the way it will get really out of control. I've listed the groups and the page numbers where you can check for pics. instead. When I get everything in the mail, I'll take photos of completed titles (2 inch letters) and all the 4 inch altered letters for a slideshow. I hope you understand. Thanks gals!
