View Full Version : Master List of DVC Grills

We have upcoming DVC stays at four different Orlando resorts, and I had a hard time finding details about which locations have grills (all of them, I believe), what types of grills (all charcoal in Orlando and Hilton Head, gas at Vero Beach, California and Aulani), and where they're located (generally around the pools). I figured I should share what I've found:

ORLANDO

Animal Kingdom Villas - Four charcoal grills near Kidani sports court.
Bay Lake Tower - Five charcoal grills to the left of the pool when facing Bay Lake.
Beach Club Villas - Two charcoal grills in the dunes area behind the villas near the quiet pool.
Boardwalk Villas - Large, party-size charcoal grill near the tennis courts on the Villa side of the complex and in the quiet pool area.
Old Key West - Charcoal grills near each of the three quiet pools.
Staratoga Springs Resort & Spa - Charcoal grills near the Congress Park and Grandstand pools, and at each Treehouse unit.
Villas at Wilderness Lodge - One charcoal grill on beach behind the bike rental shop.
Villas at Disney's Grand Floridian - There will be 2 gas grills by the sports court.

EVERYWHERE ELSE

Aulani - Four gas grills, just past Auntie's Beach House.
Grand Californian Villas - Two gas grills, just outside the south exit (away from the lobby).
Hilton Head Island - Charcoal grills.
Vero Beach - Charcoal grills across the highway by the pond and one north of building 12, near the campfire site.

You need to provide your own charcoal (the resort stores sell the match light type). You can check out utensils from the Community Hall/Center (or the resort store at Beach Club Villas). Grills are first come, first served. No reservations are required and there is seldom a wait.

If you have any updates (quantity, type, location, etc.) or additional information, please respond! If I can still edit this post, I'll keep this master list updated.

Each of the treehouses at SSR has it's own charcoal grill. I can't wait to stay in a treehouse again and use it!

Are you sure that VB's grills are gas? I think they are on the other side of A1A and what I remember is that they were charcoal grills. It has been a few years since we saw them.

I have seen the charcoal grill on the beach at VWL, I think it was close to where you rent bikes.

Thanks! Updated.

I'm not positive, but there are quite a few threads and mentions of gas grills at Vero Beach. Searching more, I see mentions of charcoal grills as well. Perhaps both? Or perhaps they've switched at some point? I'll research it some more, and perhaps someone with recent experience can say for sure.

Thank you for the post.
I was looking for the perfect spot while checking out OKW, Saratoga, I think Congress Parks quiet pool appears to be the best (at least to me).

Question What do you do with the ashes? There doesn't appear to be a safe place to dispose of them.

BWV - has at least 1 charcoal grill in the quiet pool area

Vero Beach grills are charcoal, not gas.
They do not have utensils to use.
BCV does not have utensils to use either, as far as I know, (and I asked)

We're currently at VWL and on our first night here we tried to find the grills (in the dark). No success, so I asked. I was told that there were no grills. I didn't like that answer, so I asked someone else. Same story. I went back to the room to cook the steaks in a pan, but decided to call the front desk before I started cooking them. They said the grills were on the beach behind the beach bar. I hadn't seen them there, but went for a closer look. No luck. I asked three other cast members. All three said there were no grills. SIX CAST MEMBERS - ALL WRONG.

I finally thought to check this thread and saw that it was near the rental shop. I went and looked closer there, and found THE LONE GRILL, hidden back behind the rental shop.

The steaks were worth it. And I had a great view of the Electrical Water Pageant while I grilled them.

Vero Beach -- this year we spotted a charcoal grill north of building 12 - near the campfire site.

Unless they yanked one out, there are two grills at VWL. Both in the same general area, as of December 2006 when this picture was taken:

They might have done that. I don't see the second one in this picture taken in Nov 2009. Maybe it's because the CM's didn't know what they were......? :rolleyes1

On longer stays we always grill, since we're so close form home I bring all of the utensils etc. with me. I've used the grills at OKW many times and also at SSR! Thanks for the info on the other resorts!

as far as those CM's who didn't know about the grills, they are kind of tucked away, out of sight, plus most people would expect to see a bigger type of gas grill!

It's nice to see your vigilence paid off!

Thanks for the updates, fellow DVC grill lovers! I've updated the main post.

I'm currently at OKW, and the nearest quiet pool has two grills. I haven't checked near the main pool, but I suspect they're only near the quiet pools.

At VWL, I walked up and down the edge of the woods where we found the one grill, and didn't see any sign of a second one. We'll be back there in a couple weeks, so I'll check again just to make sure. :)

We stayed at the Beach Club Villas two weeks ago for the first time. Didn't get that DVC feeling at all. The front desk did not know where the grills were! They told us that the store sold charcoal, but the store manager said that they have never sold charcoal. And as for the bbq utensils we have used at Kidani and SSR, they didn't know what we were talking about. Everytime we asked a DVC question we would get that "deer in the headlights" look. The "Welcome Home" didn't seem sincere.

Staratoga Springs Resort & Spa - Charcoal grills near the quiet pools, and at each Treehouse unit.

To avoid confusion at SSR, it might be more appropriate to say there are charcoal grills & picnic enclosures at the Congress Park and Grandstand quiet pools, and a charcoal grill at each Tree House Villa.

Even though your statement is technically correct because the Paddock pool can be classified as a themed pool now, many still think of it as a quiet pool. There's no BBQ in the Paddock. The grills and playground were taken out when the pool was expanded.

We were told by the Beach Club marketplace manager that they have never sold charcoal, but then maybe she knew as little as the front desk:worried:

There is no grill at the main themed pool by the Hospitality House. Grills are located only at the three quiet pools at OKW.

This is great! I don't suppose you can add a grilling with charcoal 101 for folk like me who've only grilled with gas grills and have only known folks with gas grills. :rotfl:

My exDH tried it once and the food took too long to cook and came out tasting like lighter fluid. I'd like to give it a try on my own.

The grills are cleaned nightly by the maintenance staff. We grilled at about 7pm on our first night, and by 9am the next morning it had already been cleaned.

I know that some people have recommended bringing your own cleaning products, etc. We did not do this, and it was fine. I would say that the grills are moderately clean; if you are a "clean freak," you might want to bring your own cleaning products to be extra safe. :thumbsup2

Surprisingly clean! The first time I expected to see your typical greasy, nasty, public park grill, but not so!

I still scrape the heck out of it, just like at home!

Unlike a gas grill, you can't light it off and start cooking immediately. Pile the coals in a stack and give them a good dousing with lighter fluid, making sure to get some down into the center of the stack. Light them in several places and let them burn for a while. After the flames go out, continue to wait until they've turn mostly white with a glowing orange color coming from the center of the pile. This is the perfect time to cook. The coals will be at their hottest, and there won't be any lighter fluid taste. At home, I usually light the grill about 30 minutes before I'm ready to start cooking. The grills at Disney are smaller, though, so it won't take them quite that long.

Here's what I do, I detest lighter fluid and do not use it (it's like I can taste it)!

1st I prepare snacks, appetizers, a pitcher of drinks! Then I get my bag of briquettes (even self starter briquettes are preferable to lighter fluid) and a newspaper (yes a whole one) and a lighter! Then I gather the teenagers, so they can carry it all to the grill area! I lay the whole paper at the bottom, pile on the briquesttes, light the paper! We have cocktail time, snack, drink, swim around the quiet pool! The coals are generally ready within 25 to 35 minutes, a bit less if using the self starters!! They are grey on top and red ambered in the middle!

Thanks! :)Yes. They were in the storage drawer under the oven in our unit. Long spatula, tongs, and fork.

You'll need your own charcoal, lighter fluid, and matches.

Also pack a flashlight if you plan to cook out after dark. The path light is on the opposite side of the path from the grill, and it's tough to see what you're cooking. Also, there's no table down by the grill. I hated to put plates and things directly on the ground, so we made a make-shift table using a luggage rack and the lid from our owner's locker. If you don't have an owner's locker, there's a cookie sheet in the kitchen you could use.

we've grilled at bcv several times. I was just trying to find the utensils here. I called the "front desk" like from the room phone, they told me that they were "at the recreation desk next to the check-desk, that is community hall." So I was walking through the lobby and asked the conceierge desk. She didn't know, but she started calling the facilities people. She left me a message that they do not have any and that you have to buy them off property to use. I thought all the dvc resorts were supposed to have them, but I guess not. The grill out area at bcv is very nice, there are two grills and a picnic table by the quiet pool. It is the taj mahal grilling pavillion of kidani or anything, but it is very nice. The wilv one *is* hard to find.

My memory is a bit fuzzy, but it seems like I've always just brought tongs or a turner from the unit out to the grill (at all DVC properties). I would guess that the community hall might have some, as well, but that's just a guess.

I wouldn't count on anyone at the front desk having a clue.

I don't know whether the OP is still monitoring this thread... But I was wondering whether anyone knows whether there will be any grills at the new GFV? :confused3 If there are not to be any grills, it will be the only DVC property without at least one. I have heard nothing one way or the other... Anyone else?

Also, the comment about there currently being no grills at Aulani is out of date... I have read several reports that the grill patio is now up and operational. :thumbsup2

Grilling tools and lighters are located at the community halls/centers for check out.

BCV tools are in the resort store at BC.

BWV has a very large party size grill.

The charcoal in the resort stores is the match light type that doesn't require lighter fluid.

We were just grilling at Bay Lake Tower last week. Got all the gear, including the self-starting briquettes. Suddenly realized that we didn't have anything to light them with.

Went to front desk at BLT, and they suggested that we go buy a souvenir lighter in the market shop at the Contemporary. Went to that shop, asked whether I could buy matches, and they gave me some, no charge.

Never thought of consulting the community hall -- will consider that in the future.

Certainly grilling by the lake was a lovely experience.

Did you check the gear out, buy it or bring it with you?

When you check it out they usually give you a lighter to use.

You normally check the grilling gear out from the same location that lets you check out the DVD movies. That can be different locations depending on the resort.

We always pack a lighter and steak seasoning. :)

When I go down to grill, I usually pack everything on our stroller -- charcoal, lighter fluid, lighter, steak seasoning, a platter, tongs, and the steaks.

I grilled three times last week at the Wilderness Lodge Villas and will be grilling twice this week at Beach Club Villas. Looking forward to grilling at Old Key West in December, Animal Kingdom Villas in February, and Bay Lake Tower in March!
