The good news, it's not poison ivy I have...

The bad news is, it's shingles! I called my doctor this morning and he sent me to the ER. They diagnosed what I thought was poison ivy, as shingles! I have had a terrible 2 weeks with this stuff. At least I was told it's not contagious. So now I am on new meds that will hopefully start to work soon.

I had shingles a few years ago. I had a terrible pain DEEP in the middle of my back. I have a lot of back pain so this was not too alarming. I went to the doctor because I had a sore throat and while I was there showed him a slight rash I had under my breasts. He told me I had shingles. I said, "Isn't that something that only old people get?" Then I laughed because I AM one of those old people. :D He gave me some meds and within a day or two the pain was gone. The rash disappeared in a few more days. You have to realize though, that you can get it again, but in a different place. Just keep up your general good health.

My aunt had that a couple years ago. She said it was very painful.
TC, I hope your's isn't that bad and I hope you recover from it quickly.

Tuffcookie, right now, my dad's going thru the same thing as you! For 2 weeks he and my mom thought he had poison ivy or poison oak. She took him to the dr and he has shingles. The dr told him because they waited 2 weeks, instead of taking the meds and being ok within 2 weeks or so, he'll be in pain for 2 YEARS!:(

I've been told shingles ARE contagious.

Shingles are contageous if someone else touches the open blisters (yuck I know) and that person can get chicken pox. If anyone around you has not had chicken pox they should not touch anywhere you are infected.
Just thought I would let you know but I am sure the dr told you all about it.;)

I had them 2 years ago and they have come back 3 times....when I am under severe stress. Luckily mine is a small area and not painful. :rolleyes:

I had shingles when I was 17 but had no clue what it was. I just remember having this horrible, blistering rash on my side. :( I did not have a good rapport with my parents on health issues like this, so I just said nothing. At the time, I just got my driver's license, and one of my first trips was to a drug store to buy the biggest bandaids available! Funny thing is that I don't remember it being painful - just yucky looking. I only found out it was shingles when I was in my mid-twenties and I was flipping through a home remedy book and recognized the description of shingles.
