As a family who is usually controlled by the school calendar for taking trips we decided to take advantage of the lengthy time off during the Christmas Holidays to travel to Disney. :santa:

The Cast of Characters (Edited from our PTR – found here) (Christmas) Lights, Decorations, Action - A Post Christmas PTR (http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?p=37042421#post37042421)

Me-Marv (51) – Disney Fanatic, member of the DIS Dad’s Club, and (over)planner extraordinaire
DW-Alison (age; not going there) – enjoys going to Disney, but leaves the planning to me
DS21-Matt – college senior
DS18-Jon – just completed first semester of college
DS13-Drew – 8th grader, loves everything sports, especially soccer

Here we are during our trip in 2008

http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll297/marvali_photos/2008%20Vacation%20OKW/photopass%20pictures/image116-1.jpg

We normally travel to Disney during the very hot summer months, but we made a similar Post-Christmas trip two years ago. We ended up taking DS13s BFF on that trip for his very first Disney visit, so we didn’t get to enjoy the lights and decorations as much as we had originally planned. This trip the priority was to soak up the atmosphere of the Holidays Disney-style.

Since we are DVC members and know we will be back again fairly soon, DW and I aren’t as concerned about riding any certain ride, or taking in any certain show this time around. Our DSs are old enough and responsible enough to tour the parks at their own pace,:hyper: so their priorities are something completely different. :)

There will be lots of pictures (some taken especially in honor of some of my DISfriends), some dining reviews and even food porn for those who like to eat at Disney like we do. Mainly there will be lots of pictures of the Christmas lights and decorations, and some of the special entertainment offered by Disney during the Holidays.

Hopefully this TR will be both entertaining and informative for anyone who chooses to follow along. I hope it will be as fun for readers as it will be for me to share with you all!

If we get as much as they are predicting, with the temps remaining below freezing until some time Tuesday, we might get a lot of "free" time. I might have the whole TR written by the time we can get out again!!! :rotfl2:

Reporting in for duty, sir! Now back to read. ;):welcome: aboard Kathy! Glad to have you along for the TR!

And I guess I should correct my oversight and give the obligatory :welcome: to Glenn and Pat too!!!

And I'm thrilled to be here.

It had pretty much stopped snowing earlier, but it has picked up again. Drew measured about 7 inches in different locations around the yard.

Right now it is just really pretty, fluffy soft snow. Unfortunately later today it is supposed to start sleeting and possible freezing rain. Hopefully it will move away from us before that begins and it won't be so bad. Since it is only supposed to get up to 30 today, it will all stay on the ground and frozen into tomorrow at least. May not return to fairly normal conditions until possibly Wednesday!

Sadly they didn't close down any schools or workplaces :rolleyes:Thanks Jen! We live in a country area and our house sits on a pretty good sized hill. The snow is really pretty, but it doesn't take a whole lot to make it very difficult to get down our driveway and out to the highway. About to head out and see what I can do clearing some of it away so we can drive out if we need to.

They are already closing down some schools for tomorrow already. They are still expecting sleet and freezing rain later in the day, and all of that plus the remaining snow will all freeze really solid tonight!
I wanna join in the fun!!!!!! :)
That is a lot of snow if i say so myself, the one who never seen snow at all :lmao::welcome: goofy's_gurl!!! Feel free to join in all the fun around here! For this area, that is indeed a lot of snow, but some of my DISfriends from up north won't be so impressed. They said on the weather the last time they had 12 inches of snow around here was 1963.

You need to go to Disney during the time around Christmas. We saw "snow" three different times while we were there...... :rolleyes1

Your snow pictures are pretty - but that's the only time I like snow - in a picture :thumbsup2 So far this winter, other than Christmas Eve, we haven't had any snow other than light dustings....I am totally ok with that and am perfectly content for it to remain that way until an early Spring when everything warms up and turns green. :sunny: Unfortunately, my delivery man this morning said they were calling for a few inches or more this week....he covers most of the state so maybe it will keep landing somewhere else.

Beautiful snow pictures, nothing prettier than pristine white snow on evergreen trees. I love your property, looks like a nice big lot and the neighbours look pretty far off so lots of privacy. Thanks Lessa! I had to get out early and get the pictures before DS13 got out in it having fun! ;) We have a rather long and sloping driveway that he loves to use for "sledding."

I'm a big fan of plenty of room where the neighbors don't live right on top of you! This is a pretty good neighborhood for it! :thumbsup2
We are still getting a mix ( according to radar) and will be for hours.

Schools have not made a decision yet and well I am afraid work might just be on a delay. But I have fingers and toes crossed for another day off.We still have some in the area. Luckily we haven't seen too much of that doppler "pink" mix of sleet and freezing rain! The snow is much easier to deal with!
Those snow pictures just made my jaw drop! Remind me of the kind of snow we used to get up here, before the winters got so warm.

How do you get all the shoveling done???? Do you have one of those giant snow machines that you sit on?Since our snow is typically few and far between, AND usually melts and goes away in one day, it isn't really cost efficient to have equipment for dealing with it. We just have to make do with what we have, which isn't much. Luckily we have one neighbor who has a small tractor with a plow that works on the street and at least makes a small difference on the steeper driveways, which helps some.

Originally I was supposed to have Christmas work holidays on the Wednesday and Thursday before Christmas. I was planning to work the Monday and Tuesday after, then drive half way to Disney on Tuesday night, and arrive for check-in at our DVC home resort of Kidani early Wednesday afternoon. Since that would make it really difficult to celebrate Christmas with both families, I started to try and figure out how to get it all in. With the two oldest DSs having to finish exams and make it home from college, that didn’t leave many opportunities.

After thinking it through I decided to move my Christmas holidays to the Monday and Tuesday AFTER Christmas. We always go to the In-Laws on Christmas Day so this meant we could celebrate with my family right after and head to Florida on Tuesday, driving all the way there. Not only did this mean a solution to seeing everyone at Christmas, but it also meant another (partial)day in the Disney parks!!!:cool1:

So with all the usual packing, double checking everything, and packing some more we also had to get everything ready for Christmas.:santa: All the presents were wrapped and the time to start our journey was getting really close. I got some Christmas cards in the mail from some of my dear DISfriends and then the final day of mail delivery before we had the mail stopped I got a really big surprise; one of the sweetest and dearest things I got over all of Christmas. I opened the envelope to find a thank you card from Tim(that’s nice), Mel and Juliana who recently were at Disney for Ana’s MAW trip!

True to form coming from a Disney Princess, princess: the front looked like this
http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll297/marvali_photos/Disney%20Trip%20New%20Year%202011/011.jpg

http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll297/marvali_photos/Disney%20Trip%20New%20Year%202011/009-1.jpg

The card was so unexpected and the drawing was so precious!!! Thanks Princess Juliana for a very special Christmas gift!

Christmas Eve came and the weather forecast wasn’t sounding too good. Normally a White Christmas would be a wonderful thing, but with a need to travel smoothly to the In-Laws the next day we weren’t looking forward to having to make the trek on potentially slippery roads. :worried:

Well Marv, your card was well deserved. :grouphug:Maybe but not necessary after all the comments on your thread! My reward was knowing a special family was enjoying a well deserved trip!
So Marv... you got one of the nice drawings. :lmao: After having a 4 year old write out a ton of thank you cards, some of the drawings weren't as good. :rolleyes1:rolleyes1Any drawing from Princess Juliana is a great drawing! Here's hoping she is making plenty of them for a very long, long time to come! :thumbsup2

Now I have to get to work creating a very interesting and entertaining TR for everyone to read! Since Princess Juliana made an appearance I'm bound to have a lot more readers with high expectations! :)

Yeah, exams usually put a big damper on traveling during the holidays. My little brother's exams couldn't end early enough for my family to do any decent traveling back to China before school started again.

As for the snow, that is definitely not the norm around here! When we occasionally get snow, it is usually the "lasts one day" variety and then it is warm enough to be all melted away. Not sure how long this one will stick around, since it has partially melted and then refrozen at night. Everything looks like a slick sheet of ice!

We got up Christmas morning with the goal of getting on the road to the In-laws much earlier than we usually do.:thumbsup2 The possible snow early Christmas morning hadn't made it in yet, so we woke up to a rainy day instead. Still, the weatherman was predicting the conditions to worsen as the day went along. But the possible winter weather concerns weren't the only thing driving us to leave earlier. Our schedule for the next three days was driven by not only spending time with family,:yay: but being able to leave early on Tuesday morning for "sunny" Florida and our planned trip to Disney!:woohoo:

So here was the scheduled travel goal. We get to the In-Laws early afternoon on Christmas Day (Saturday) and stay until Sunday around 5:00. This would give us enough time to get there Sunday night before bedtime. We would have the whole day with my Dad on Monday, celebrating Christmas with my family Monday night, and then be ready to leave 9:00 Tuesday morning for Florida.

This would give us a little extra time with my Dad. He was going through a rough few weeks without Mom being there for the first time. November included what would have been my Mom's 83rd birthday, my parent's 65th anniversary and my older brother's 64th birthday (he passed away a few years ago from Leukemia), plus Thanksgiving and now Christmas. :sad1:

This whole Holiday season was always my Mom's favorite time of the year. She loved to cook and have all of her family together to eat and laugh and just share family time! :grouphug: I knew my Dad would be really down going through all of this for the first time since she passed away, and wanted to try and spend as much time as possible with him, trying to make it special.:goodvibes I had already prepared 2 batches of my Christmas treat specialty (7-layer bars) and DW had everything prepared for her traditional sour cream coconut cake for our trip to the In-Laws. I already had everything measured out and in zip-loc bags ready to bake more 7-layer bars fresh when we arrived at my Dad's, and everything was together for another sour cream coconut cake to have for our family get-together Monday evening. We would have plenty of time early Monday to get all of the baking done, plus whatever food we made for that night. Our only concern was that the stove at my Dad's house hasn't been working properly for a while now, so burning things had become rather easy if you didn't pay attention, but more on that later.....:rolleyes1

Even with the plans to leave early, the day seemed to fly along, while getting everyone and everything ready to go seemed to drag longer and longer. popcorn:: Usually Christmas morning involves our traditional breakfast of homemade biscuits, country ham, grits and scrambled eggs :woohoo: but we did this one morning earlier this year in an attempt to help speed up the getting ready process on Christmas morning. The boys had packed a lot of their clothes the day before, but they wanted some of their new Christmas clothes for the trip, which were working their way through the washer and dryer. We finally got it all together and loaded into the cars, but it was getting later in the day and the weather wasn’t getting any better. After getting all the presents loaded in the back seat, I was able to stop and take a couple of pictures of what we were leaving behind.

Here are a few shots of our Christmas tree. We didn’t decorate quite as much as we usually do since we knew we would be gone most of the time we would have been enjoying everything. :guilty:

http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll297/marvali_photos/Disney%20Trip%20New%20Year%202011/012-1.jpg

http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll297/marvali_photos/Disney%20Trip%20New%20Year%202011/017.jpg

I started noticing glitter on the floor. Then I saw it all over me, and everywhere between the tree and the car. :confused3 Note to self: Never again let your DW buy any more ribbon decorated with glitter to make the bows for the presents!!! It was all in the back seat of the car, and before our trip was over, all over the In-laws’ house, and my Dad’s house……

We were finally on the road. :) At least we didn’t have to deal with any snowy or icy roads yet. But by the time we got about an hour from home, we started seeing some snow mixed in with the rain. Then the boys started getting text messages that it was snowing at home. We had escaped just in time. Thankfully it never got too bad while we were travelling, but not long after we arrived at the In-Laws’ house it had turned to nothing but snow coming down, which made it fun trying to unload luggage and presents for our short stay at our first stop on the way to Disney!

But what would we find when we got up the next morning, and would it affect our goal of getting to my Dad’s on schedule so we could get everything prepared for the family get-together?

Coming Up Chapter 3 – Change in Plans???

Awww, what a sweet, heartfelt post!:goodvibes I think it's wonderful that you were sensitive to your dad's needs this holiday season. I'm sure it was hard for him but having you and your family around must have helped so much.:goodvibes

Ah, 7 layer bars! I think the recipe for those fell straight from heaven, they're so delish! I remember years ago when I was a college student and someone made them in our dorm! I'm pretty sure I became friends with that girl just for that reason! Does that sound shallow?

Thanks for the tip on the glitter ribbon.:thumbsup2 I don't think I'll ever have that problem though since I hate wrapping gifts and usually try to put everything in gift bags! No way would I be doing ribbon too, that's too much work.

Your tree is beautiful! I love the angel on top. The bows are pretty too. DH and I argue (well, mildly disagree!) over putting bows on our tree. I don't like them at all but for some odd reason he does.:confused3 And they have to be put on just so perfectly, evenly spaced apart. Do you see why I can't stand the bows? Next year I think I'll just have to 'misplace' them so that we can't find them when we decorate the tree...:rolleyes1

I hope the weather didn't put a damper on anything!:goodvibes

:woohoo::woohoo::woohoo: an update from Marv.

First, I'm glad you made plans to spend more time with your dad and baking for him, etc. I remember you telling me this was his first Christmas (as well as yours) without your mom and I know first hand how difficult that first one is.

I love the Christmas tree! The very last picture in the lower left hand corner, I have that little ornament bear. I don't put it on my tree anymore because our tree is now ALL Disney ornaments except for two for our dog.

Glitter. :scared1::scared1: That's like that stuff they put in Christmas cards...like the little pixie dust Mickey stuff they put on the tables at restaurants. I open a card and it flies all over.

Can't wait to hear what happens the next day.

Beautiful tree.

Our tree made it up late and we got as far as lights and some garland. :sad2:

We stayed home for Christmas too. :sad2::sad2:

I guess we kept waiting for everyone to be home and well with teens that does not really happen much anymore.

Next year, I am pulling the tree out Thanksgiving day.

Ah, 7 layer bars! I think the recipe for those fell straight from heaven, they're so delish! I remember years ago when I was a college student and someone made them in our dorm! I'm pretty sure I became friends with that girl just for that reason! Does that sound shallow?:laughing:Yeah, pretty much. ;)

That is something my Mom used to make every Christmas, and one of those "favorites" of hers that she copied the recipe for and gave to me years ago. :thumbsup2 Since they are pretty easy to make, I have made them and taken them to work around Christmas the past few years. I guess they are now one of those Christmas things I took over for Mom now that she's gone. :goodvibes
Thanks for the tip on the glitter ribbon.:thumbsup2 I don't think I'll ever have that problem though since I hate wrapping gifts and usually try to put everything in gift bags! No way would I be doing ribbon too, that's too much work.:laughing:That is definitely a DW thing. As far as I'm concerned, peel the paper off the back and slap on a bow! (at least semi color-coordinated to the wrapping paper...) :lmao:
Your tree is beautiful! I love the angel on top. The bows are pretty too. DH and I argue (well, mildly disagree!) over putting bows on our tree. I don't like them at all but for some odd reason he does.:confused3 And they have to be put on just so perfectly, evenly spaced apart. Do you see why I can't stand the bows? Next year I think I'll just have to 'misplace' them so that we can't find them when we decorate the tree...:rolleyes1Usually I put up the tree and put on the ornaments, and DW adds the bows (and yes, "perfectly" spaced). :rotfl2: But I like them mainly because they add color. We have been giving each other (and the boys) Hallmark ornaments from the very start, so almost everything on the tree is one of those. A lot of them aren't all that colorful, so the red bows take care of that.
I hope the weather didn't put a damper on anything!:goodvibesI can't really remember. Can't wait until the next update so I can read and find out...... :rolleyes1
:woohoo: an update from Marv.Well, you weren't getting any younger and I wanted to make sure you got a chance to read it...... :lmao:
First, I'm glad you made plans to spend more time with your dad and baking for him, etc. I remember you telling me this was his first Christmas (as well as yours) without your mom and I know first hand how difficult that first one is. :hug:It definitely had a different feel to it, but still good to share with family! :)
I love the Christmas tree! The very last picture in the lower left hand corner, I have that little ornament bear. I don't put it on my tree anymore because our tree is now ALL Disney ornaments except for two for our dog.I made sure our meager supply of Disney ornaments was in the picture just for you! You never know, though, there could possibly be a few more in our future....... :rolleyes1
Glitter. :scared1: That's like that stuff they put in Christmas cards...like the little pixie dust Mickey stuff they put on the tables at restaurants. I open a card and it flies all over.Yes, vile messy stuff! :sad2:
Can't wait to hear what happens the next day.Already pushing for another update??? :confused3 Don't expect it to take so long for that one since it is almost written. I was going to include everything up until we were supposed to leave for the Disney part of our trip but it started getting too long, so I decided to make it a two-parter! I guess I should have put "To Be Continued...." at the end of the latest update to make sure everyone comes back, like they do on TV! :rotfl2:

Your tree is very pretty!

Good thing you missed most of the snow on your drive although rain is no fun to drive in either. Thanks Lessa! Snow the whole way wouldn't have been any fun, but being Christmas Day at least we didn't have all that much traffic to deal with along with the rain! :thumbsup2
Great Updater Marv !!! It will keep us going til next month when you do the next!!!:rotfl2:

Sounds nice to plan all the family time !!:cloud9::hug:Yes, family time is the best part of Christmas to me! :grouphug: And I'll try to get in another update before next month, just for you! ;)
Wow - you did escape just in time!

Beautiful Christmas tree. I love the pretty red ribbons! Thanks MEK! And for a while there, I was afraid we weren't going to make it out in time, in spite of the plans...... :sad2:
Beautiful tree.

Our tree made it up late and we got as far as lights and some garland. :sad2:

We stayed home for Christmas too. :sad2::sad2:

I guess we kept waiting for everyone to be home and well with teens that does not really happen much anymore.

Next year, I am pulling the tree out Thanksgiving day.

Can't wait to hear how the next couple of days go. :surfweb: popcorn::Thanks Pat! Ours wasn't up very long either. I was supposed to be stuck at home over Thanksgiving with on-call duty at work, so I was planning to put it up that weekend so it would be done when the rest of the family got home, but someone took the duty for me and "spoiled" my plans. Worked out well since there was a celebration planned for DFIL's 80th birthday! :woohoo:
That was the only opening for a while, so we definitely didn't give ourselves very long to enjoy it before we left. Like you said about teens being home, we were then waiting for two DSs to make it home from college.

You should be pretty familiar with my next couple of days, since the In-Law's live about 30-45 minutes south of you! I'm sure you had pretty much the same weather to deal with..... :rolleyes1

Our only concern was that the stove at my Dad's house hasn't been working properly for a while now, so burning things had become rather easy if you didn't pay attention, but more on that later.....:rolleyes1

Good job laying the groundwork early for the upcoming excuse. That's a very manly thing to do, and I approve! :thumbsup2

But what would we find when we got up the next morning, and would it affect our goal of getting to my Dad’s on schedule so we could get everything prepared for the family get-together?

Coming Up Chapter 3 – Change in Plans???

Glad you escaped the snow, but this section has me thinking that you didn't escape all of it.

I hope your Dad was able to enjoy the holidays with the family around. I know it must of been hard on him (and you) without your mom there.

Love the bows on your tree! Ours is about 2 steps away from being all Disney.

Glad you were able to make it on the road in time before the bad weather hit... can't wait to see what happened the next morning. popcorn::

I do the Hallmark ornaments too. We really don't even use any other ornaments, that is when those actually make it on the tree. :headache:

That's what I used to have - a tree full of Hallmark and other "figures". Years ago mcDonalds had the 101 Dalmations in their Happy Meals - some of them had little rings on them to use as ornaments, so I had a ton of those too....plus the stuff the boys would make at school or Sunday School, and after Christmas I would take them shopping to pick out some more that were clearanced. What I did not have on my tree was the plain ornament balls. Didn't like 'em. :confused3 As it got harder for me to crawl around on the floor and get the tree put together that duty got turned over to the boys. That worked for a little while - then they became more obsitnate and wouldn't put my "millions of stupid ornaments" on the tree. I told them they could put whatever they wanted on it - just to get it up and get it decorated.

My 2010 Christmas tree

http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll6/mom3sonstt/0115011107.jpg

complete with Cubs/Santa hat on top

http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll6/mom3sonstt/0115011108.jpg

Cubs stuffed snowman, Cubs candy cane ornaments, Cubs garland

http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll6/mom3sonstt/downsized_0115011108a.jpg

other random Cubs ornaments - and oh yes - that's Elvis down there on the bottom! When the ornaments first went on it was only Cubs stuff, a couple Elvis, and a Ward Burton (former Nascar driver) - it was totally Mark's tree. Christmas Eve he went downstairs and drug out some WWE ornaments, Captain Jack, and a personalized family one to add to it. It's definitely unique. But Santa came - an that's what matters! Oh and yes - I did just run out there and take some pics on my phone to post here because, yes, the tree is still up. :rolleyes1 The plan is it comes down today after Mark gets back from his Speech Meet.....but, we'll see :sad2:

If you didn't get it down then you were on your own to get rid of it. Our neighbor's birthday is Valentines Day, and he had been giving my folks a hard time (kiddingly) about the tree still being there. Ya, your track record isn't really helping you any Marv:laughing:! But that's ok by me, I don't mind catching up. I'll only be gone for 9 days sooooo, that's like what, 1/2 an update I'll be behind?;) Maybe 3/4??Boy Molly, apparently you aren't very selective on who you let influence your thinking....... :rolleyes1

nice update marve but what is this 7 layer bar thing you speak of, must be a southern dish.
:confused3

ive heard of seven layer salad:thumbsup2

so I decided to make it a two-parter! I guess I should have put "To Be Continued...." at the end of the latest update to make sure everyone comes back, like they do on TV! :rotfl2:

yeah but the problem with that is sometimes those shows get canceled before you find out what the continue was that you were waiting for.

Well Dan, I know you are hoping this is a very tall tavern where they serve a different type of beer at each "bar" ;) but this is actually a "sweet" that would maybe be loosely lumped in the brownie/cookie category. They are so easy to make that I'm guessing even you could pull it off! :thumbsup2 :rotfl2:

The 7 layers are butter or margarine (which is melted in the bottom of a pan) to which is added in this order graham cracker crumbs (when combined with the melted butter creates the bottom layer of "crust"), semi sweet morsels, butterscotch morsels, flaked coconut, chopped pecans and then over the whole thing you pour a can of eagle brand sweetened condensed milk which cooks all through the whole concoction and holds it all together. After baking, you allow this addictive creation of sweet delight :goodvibes to cool and cut into bars like you would fudge or brownies!!! 7 ingredients, therefore 7 layers!

I guess the good news is that around here, you typically don't get your "show" cancelled, but unless you are one of a chosen few who seem to be able to drag things out endlessly with no ill effects,:confused3 you just might lose all your readership! :sad2: Guess I better get to work soon!!! :rolleyes1

Yes, I'm prone to giving in to peer pressure! Good grief, it's high school all over again! "Kathy said that Tim said that Marv said that Molly told me...blah blah blah!" Ugh, the flashbacks, it's 1991!

That recipe for 7 layer bars is the exact one I have too, I think I need to run to the store and whip up a batch pronto! They really are delicious but dangerous...they look small and thin so you think hey, I'll have another and another and maybe just one more. Before you know it, you've eaten half the pan! Which is why I don't make them often!

Now Rosie's adding ninja posting to her vast repertoire!!!

I would love the recipe for those 7 layer thingies !!Like amounts and bake time !!!Now if I asked my DMIL God rest her soul she would have told me just add what looks right and cook it till it's done !!!!!:rotfl2:She's the one who told me to cook Beets til they were done but DON"T prick'em!!!!:lmao:Ma would that be 10 mins or 3 days !!!!:confused3:rotfl::rotfl::lmao: Sounds like your Mom cooked like my Mom most of the time!

I will double check the recipe for temperature, but if I remember correctly it is as follows:

2/3 stick of butter (or margarine, but I prefer the butter - the recipe actually says it in tablespoons - 5 and 1/3 maybe, but I know you can get three batches from 2 sticks)
Preheat oven to 350 degf (have to check, it might be 325)
Melt butter in 13x9 pan while oven is preheating
(When butter is melted, I usually shake it around in the pan and try to get it as even as possible) Then quickly sprinkle in one cup of graham cracker crumbs, making sure they are also spread evenly on the bottom of the pan
Then in order, add one cup EACH of semi-sweet morsels, butterscotch morsels (I usually combine the two in a container and shake them up so they are mixed a little more evenly), Baker's flaked coconut and chopped pecans. Then pour a can of Eagle Brand Sweetened Condensed Milk over the top. I start right along the edge of the pan because if you get the edges cooked right you are pretty certain that the whole thing will be cooked and hold together pretty well. Have a scraper handy because you will pretty much need every drop you can get out of the can.

Bake for 30 minutes. Adjust time a little shorter if you use a dark/teflon pan instead of aluminum or glass, and also depending on your stove (as in my Mom's) :rolleyes1 and where you are versus sea level (as you would for pretty much anything else). I usually check them at about 25 minutes to see if the middle is starting to get slightly brown, which is when I take them out.

Loosen edges when you remove from stove. Let them cool in the pan, then slice and serve.

As you can tell by suggestions about the butter, graham cracker crumbs, distribution of the morsels and pouring the condensed milk, I am very OCD about how I make them. I've had some I don't think were done with as much TLC and they just don't taste the same to me. :rolleyes1 I'm actually sharing my little secrets right here for the first time just for you Rosie!!! :goodvibes

ah nuts i thought it was a new type of bar you discovered in the south.

actually those sound pretty good.

and it seem like a suprise to you, but i actually can cook pretty good.
i was even going to go to culinary school, but if you want to work in the nice fancy places in the big cities, you have to work pretty late at those, and that didnt appeal to me.

so i stick with the cooking at home, candi enjoys cooking, but i usually do about 80% of the dinners at home:thumbsup2

very true, i have my readers that i have kept from the begining on mine but alot have come and gone from the begining. mostly gone, or they lurk, but i do appreciate all the readers and the comments that people say:thumbsup2

i think alot of people like it when you update every day or every other day, i just dont have the time to write that often and cant keep that pace up. especially with the amount of TR that you sub to, its hard to keep up with those and write on your own

but it seems to happen on alot of peoples reports, alot of people join in the first few chapters then either fade away or just lurk the rest of the way out.

its okay i dont mind, i enjoy remembering the trip and if i get to remember it a few months longer than a normal TR length

Nice update, Marv - your Christmas travel plans sound a bit like ours in terms of rushing from place to place (though without the benefit of a Disney trip!!). I'm glad you were able to spend time with your family, especially your dad (though I am assuming you got to spend the time you wanted with him, especially with that tease for the next chapter...)

I laughed at the Hallmark ornanment conversation. My MIL has been a huge fan forever, and she passed it on to my DH. My children brag about the fact that they have the only "talking Christmas tree" on the block. See, we seem to collect the Star Wars/Star Trek/Disney ornaments that make noise, and that plug into the lights to get their power. So when you plug the lights in, they all come on at the same time. We've surprised lots of people that have been visiting us when we've turned our tree on...:rolleyes1 But it is definitely a headache getting them back into all those darned boxes!!!:headache:

Your seven layer bars sound yummy...I'd love to try them, but they don't quite fit into the whole Weight Watchers plan. ;)

add that to thinly sliced chicken/veggies of your choice. ( i use bean sproats, carrots, celery, and onion)

cook till soft and chicken cooked.

put inside some wrappers and brown them up.

ohh man.

the mustard in them is so good and flavorful, when i make them no one uses a dipping sauce.

I am impressed by all the baking you and your DW made and even took with you. The 7-layer-bar sounds delicious, unfortunately I don't think I would be able to get those morsels here (I even had to google them to find out what they are) - or graham crackers. What was the coconut thing your DW made? That sounded delicious, too!

What was the coconut thing your DW made? That sounded delicious, too!Too bad you can't get those items so you can make them! Maybe your next trip to WDW a little birdie might send you some to enjoy! :rolleyes1

As for the coconut thing, it is Sour Cream Coconut Cake. Another very easy item to make. Would have to get the proper amounts for you, but you combine the sour cream and frozen coconut (here that means it is very finely shredded, as opposed to the one you buy by the bag) and let it set up in the refrigerator overnight. Use a typical white cake mix and make it into two layers. When the layers have cooled completely, slice them in half horizontally to make the two layers into four layers. Take the sour cream/coconut mixture and "ice" between layers, and then the outside of the whole cake. It is best to place the cake on aluminum foil with wax paper so you can fold the sides up until the sour cream/coconut sets up. You have to keep the cake refrigerated.
And don't worry, we read your Dirndl question and discussed it, you will get an answer soon!! :goodvibesThanks, I found it! :thumbsup2

I just knew we were on the same page Kathy!:thumbsup2

I think my favorite episode is the one where Theo gets a poor report card and Cliff goes up to talk to him. He says something asinine about Cliff accepting him no matter what kind of grades he gets to which Cliff says that is dumbest thing he's ever heard, no wonder he gets D's in everything he does! Ugh, I really need to buy some of those seasons! Ooooh, I think I'll download some from itunes for my trip down to Disney! First I have to finish watching some crappy reality television though, Top Chef...:rolleyes1

That sounds really good! Love stuff from Hickory Farms, but don't think I've had the honey pineapple mustard before.

Had an electric wok originally, but loved the stove top one we got so much better too! :thumbsup2

I went overboard one evening and tried making won ton soup AND egg rolls at the same time. Never again! :sad2: It took about three hours between making and stuffing the won tons, mixing all of the ingredients for the egg rolls and putting them together. I might make one or the other again sometime, but not both at the same time!

it is good, you should try and find the stuff, we usually get a few when we find them.

never made a chinese type soup before.

i usually do the stir fry, and the egg rolls at the same time, not to bad, but can be time consuming, best is to cut everything up ahead of time and then cook them.

i have made the mistake of thinking ahh i can cut while those things cook, then that never works out.

another good one is, teriyaki chicken , mixed with fettecini (spelled wrong) and brocolli.

LOL Speaking of that, Melody made me dinner last night (which doesn't happen too often) and made me Chicken Cacciatore. Taken from here http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/giada-de-laurentiis/chicken-cacciatore-recipe/index.html

It was sooooo guuuuuud and very easy. She used 4 chicken breasts instead of thighs and didn't use capers because we don't really care for them.

Ingredients
4 chicken thighs
2 chicken breasts with skin and backbone, halved crosswise
2 teaspoons salt, plus more to taste
1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, plus more to taste
1/2 cup all purpose flour, for dredging
3 tablespoons olive oil
1 large red bell pepper, chopped
1 onion, chopped
3 garlic cloves, finely chopped
3/4 cup dry white wine
1 ( 28-ounce) can diced tomatoes with juice
3/4 cup reduced-sodium chicken broth
3 tablespoons drained capers
1 1/2 teaspoons dried oregano leaves
1/4 cup coarsely chopped fresh basil leaves
Directions
Sprinkle the chicken pieces with 1 teaspoon of each salt and pepper. Dredge the chicken pieces in the flour to coat lightly.

In a large heavy saute pan, heat the oil over a medium-high flame. Add the chicken pieces to the pan and saute just until brown, about 5 minutes per side. If all the chicken does not fit in the pan, saute it in 2 batches. Transfer the chicken to a plate and set aside. Add the bell pepper, onion and garlic to the same pan and saute over medium heat until the onion is tender, about 5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Add the wine and simmer until reduced by half, about 3 minutes. Add the tomatoes with their juice, broth, capers and oregano. Return the chicken pieces to the pan and turn them to coat in the sauce. Bring the sauce to a simmer. Continue simmering over medium-low heat until the chicken is just cooked through, about 30 minutes for the breast pieces, and 20 minutes for the thighs.

Using tongs, transfer the chicken to a platter. If necessary, boil the sauce until it thickens slightly, about 3 minutes. Spoon off any excess fat from atop the sauce. Spoon the sauce over the chicken, then sprinkle with the basil and serve.

Maybe "Marv" is a pseudonym for Martha Stewart?? And this TR is a focus group test for recipes?:confused3 Regardless, I'll contribute, I'll contribute:yay:! I make a cake called Honey Bun Cake that is so ridiculously easy and makes people think I slaved in the kitchen. Recipe:

1 package yellow cake mix
3/4 cup vegetable oil
4 eggs
1 (8 ounce) container sour cream
1 cup brown sugar
1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

2 cups confectioners' sugar
4 tablespoons milk
1 tablespoon vanilla extract

1.Preheat oven to 325.
2.In a large mixing bowl, combine cake mix, oil, eggs and sour cream. Stir by hand approximately 50 strokes, or until most large lumps are gone. Pour half of the batter into an ungreased 9x13 inch glass baking dish. Combine the brown sugar and cinnamon, and sprinkle over the batter in the cake pan. Spoon the other half of the batter into the cake pan, covering the brown sugar and cinnamon. Twirl the cake with a butter knife.
3.Bake in preheated oven for 40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Frost cake while it is still fairly hot (this helps set the glaze). Serve warm.

To make the frosting: In a small bowl, whisk together the confectioner's sugar, milk and vanilla until smooth. Easy peasy, right?

Marv, thanks for giving us this forum.

Cinnamon Bun Coffee Cake

1 package Rich's (or other brand) dough balls
1 package vanilla pudding (cook and serve, not instant)
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 stick butter (or margarine)

Grease 10" tube (bundt) pan. Sprinkle raisins or nuts on bottom. (Although I dont. Yuck.) Place (frozen) dough balls around the pan on top of rainsins and nuts. Sprinkle with mixture of vanilla pudding, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Top with one stick of melted butter. Leave out on counter and cover with a small towel. Let dough rise for 10-12 hours. Bake 1/2 hour at 350 degrees.

You may find it helpful to put a piece of aluminum foil loosely on top when baking to avoid browning the bottom too much.

For those of you who have been following along since my PTR, you know that we had a day of school cancelled just before Christmas break due to winter weather, and the makeup day was announced as January 3rd, the day we were supposed to return from Disney. DW is a teacher, so she and DS13 were now scheduled to be back a day earlier than planned. :sad2:

We were still holding out hope they would get to complete the trip with us, but just in case we were travelling in two cars, with me driving one and DS21 driving his with his brothers as passengers. We had actually done this on our July 2009 trip and it worked out really well for multiple reasons. One, DW had some surgery done a few weeks before our trip, and it allowed her to have plenty of room to relax and survive the long drive.:goodvibes It also gave DW and I a chance to have a relaxing conversation during the trip, and the boys to do their own thing, listen to their own music, etc. :thumbsup2

A majority of the stuff we had to pack for the trip wouldn't be used until we finally headed towards Florida. With two vehicles and some careful planning, ;) we had a couple of bags packed that would be needed for the first few days of the journey while we were visiting family, a majority of which was in the back seat of our car with the Christmas presents. The rest of the stuff we would use when we arrived at Kidani was packed away in the trunks of both cars until they were finally needed.

After getting everything we needed unloaded at the In-Law's house, including presents and the goodies we had brought for them, we all gathered around the table for a family meal.:grouphug: Sorry, no food porn pics from this meal, but we all really enjoyed it and were majorly stuffed as usual by the time we were done.

A little humorous side story about this meal. Not long after DW and I first started dating there was a special weekend at her college when the families normally would visit on that Saturday for all the planned events. That Friday night, my future DFIL was having a party at his house for his Sunday School class and we were invited to attend. We decided to go since it would allow me to meet her family prior to them visiting the next day, which we figured would make things run a little smoother. The meeting and the party all went well, and we drove back to school so DW could be up early for things she had to do before her parents and some other family members I hadn't met yet arrived.

Well after the early activities, my future DMIL had brought a huge picnic spread (her norm regardless of the meal) for all of us to eat. Part of that meal was deviled eggs (which I love) with a half of an olive (which I DON'T love) on top. Not wanting to hurt the feelings of this woman I had just met by poking the olive off the top of the deviled eggs, I figured nobody would notice that I just didn't get one to start with. :rolleyes1

The rest of the day went smoothly and eventually her family headed for home, and things returned to normal. Shortly after, Ali spoke with her parents and her Mom asked her if I didn't like deviled eggs, because she noticed I never got one! :guilty: Now this is the lady who if you ate three plates full of everything she fixed, and she asked if you wanted more of something and you turned her down, she would ask "What? You don't like my cooking???" Well yes, very much, which is why I refuse to eat another bite and return it all back where it came from!!! I would learn over time that hoping she wouldn't notice something as insignificant as passing on the deviled eggs was a futile exercise. After Ali informed her that I don't like olives she asked "Why didn't he just take them off???" :confused3 This has been a long-standing joke between me and my In-law's ever since.

Now we return to the Christmas meal and what do you think might have been predominantly displayed as part of the many food offerings? You probably guessed it; deviled eggs, two of which had a half of an olive sitting right in the middle of them. Well, instead of laughing off the inside joke as I normally do, this time I decided to turn the tables and I selected those very two olive-laden eggs!!! ;) I can now proudly announce that after approximately 30 years since I met them, I had not the least bit of remorse at poking those olives from the top of the deviled eggs, and placing them on DW's plate for her consumption.

After the meal was done, and the dishes washed and put away, we retired to the den for the sharing of Christmas presents. I had earlier removed the gifts we brought from the back of the car, leaving behind glitter in the back seat, on the sidewalk on the way into their house, across the floor and under the tree where they now awaited destructive hands to tear into them and within seconds undo all of the effort that had previously taken minutes to create! :sad2: As is tradition, the presents would have to wait until the reading of the Christmas story as found in Luke Chapter 2. One of the grandchildren always gets to do the honors and it was Drew's turn to read the story to us all. After sharing with us what the Christmas season is really all about, then getting through the pile of awaiting presents, the grandchildren moved on to other interests and the rest of us began to focus on the worsening conditions outside.

The snow was starting to ever so slowly accumulate outside. It was mostly smaller flakes, drifting slowly towards the earth, so hopefully there wouldn't be enough total the next day to negatively affect our plans. We weren't quite sure what we would find when we got up the next morning.

As we got ready to turn in for the night, DW informs me that she had packed all of her sleepwear in the big suitcase. This is the suitcase that is buried deep in the dark recesses of trunkdom! The one reserved for our final destination of Kidani! The one that I had carefully planned for being first in the trunk since it was so big, and I could then place all the remaining pieces of the baggage puzzle around for maximum stowage! The one I was now standing in the snow, removing enough items from on top of so I could try to open it just enough to get warm pajamas out, and keep cold wet snow from getting in!! In spite of the strong desire to make a really big snowball and place it neatly in the middle of the rest of her clothes, I quickly pushed that thought aside, forced this over packed suitcase closed once again, re-stowed everything back into the trunk and headed inside.

You gotta love how well things work when you implement careful planning........

I usually don't sleep very well when we stay at the In-Law's. It's a combination of a number of things; temperature of the room, different bed and pillows, and I'm right up against a wall! :rolleyes2 The good news is since we were eventually heading on vacation after the family visits, I remembered to bring my own pillow, so I did sleep a little better from that standpoint. But this night there was something else to disturb my sleep; the ever-present thought of how much snow was falling quietly in the dark outside!! :worried:

After laying there in the quiet as long as I could stand, I slipped out of the bed and headed down the hall. After a quick stop at the facilities (well, quick for a 51 year old I guess) I tiptoed :tiptoe: into the den and got my first glimpse outside. The sky was just starting to turn light, but there was still a glow outside that made it easy to see my surroundings. Everything seemed to be covered in a layer of snow, and it was still falling from the sky! :( It was hard to tell from the street lights, but the street didn't look that bad, at least not yet! I saw a few headlights and they appeared to be making decent progress, so as long as it didn't last too much longer we might be okay. :thumbsup2

Everyone else began to stir and get up to check the conditions outside. This is what they awoke to find
http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll297/marvali_photos/Disney%20Trip%20New%20Year%202011/010.jpg
DFIL had the forethought the night before that we park the cars on the driveway, heading towards the street so we had a better chance of leaving when the time came.
http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll297/marvali_photos/Disney%20Trip%20New%20Year%202011/009.jpg
The local Weather Channel became our constant companion. We gathered around the table for breakfast and watched the snow almost stop, then pick up again as heavy as any we had seen yet! The radar looked like it would stop soon, but my main concern became what we might find down the road heading to my Dad's, and the temperatures that barely got above freezing and would drop quickly as the day went along. :confused3 We had planned to leave about 5:00 and get to my Dad's house a little before bedtime to maximize the short amount of time allotted with the In-laws. After deciding this could make for a dangerous trip if the wet roads began to freeze as darkness fell, I made the decision :idea:we needed to try and get everyone and everything ready and leave as quickly as we could.

As some of us began to get showers and pack everything back together so we could load it into the cars, Drew decided he needed to go outside with his cousin and get some play time in the snow. Trying to get everything I could done to speed up the leaving process, I didn't pay too much attention to Drew before calling him in to get his shower and get ready to go. As he walked in I noticed he was wearing his Sperry's, which for those who don't know is a leather and canvas casual loafer more suited for relaxing on a boat, sans socks. This is what he normally wears when he wants to look dressy casual.

So the teenager/dumb Parent exchange went like this:
Me - "Why didn't you put your tennis shoes on before you went out instead of wearing your good Sperry's?"
Wise 13 year old - "I didn't bring them."
Me - "We are heading to Disney, with all the walking involved, and you didn't bring ANY of your pairs of tennis shoes?"
Drew - "No, I can walk around Disney in these. They're comfortable."
Me - "They're wet! You don't have anything else you can wear???"
DW's youngest son - all he can do is stand there looking at me while he shakes his head
Me - all I can do is rub my head and wonder where the tylenol bottle is.......:headache:

Luckily, DFIL uses gas logs to help heat his home. We put the shoes in front of the vent with the fan blowing the heat on the shoes, which helped get them dry again, but didn't resolve the issue of having a child with possible blisters on his feet before our trip would end.

We finally got everyone ready, everything packed and loaded back into the cars, and prepared to leave. DFIL made us some really delicious hoagie sandwiches (a work of art he always puts maximum effort into) to take with us so we didn't have to stop and find somewhere to eat and keep us on the road even later into the evening. But first a family portrait before we go.....
http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll297/marvali_photos/Disney%20Trip%20New%20Year%202011/016.jpg
As you can tell from the direction of Drew's eyes, and that clump of white in his hand, he has something else on his mind before we finally load into the cars......

We finally begin the next leg of our journey; heading to my Dad's house. Even though there is snow everywhere, the roads aren't bad at all, except for being very wet. This is not a problem now, but what will we face as nighttime draws near and the temperatures begin to drop??? :scared:

I am going with No Laptop in August and if we are lucky Marv may have done an update by then !!!:rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:

Good one Rosie! :thumbsup2

Hmm, maybe I'll get the update posted sooner just to see if you're checking...... :rolleyes1
I'll try to friend you so I can follow along. Who knows when you might ever get around to a TR..... :rotfl:
You're on the 90's list? I didn't think you were anywhere close to that old. That is like older than even Rosie!!! :scared1:

I would be happy to be in the same age category as Rosie - she has style and sass!

No, you heard wrong. This TR has turned into a "cooking" thread. :rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:

:rotfl:

After all those delicious sounding recipes I'll never get any TR updates done. Now leave me alone so I can go try some of these new recipes for my soon to be released cookbook!!! :thumbsup2

Any takers on when the cookbook will be released? My bet is not until well after the Fantasyland expansion is done. :lmao:

2. Dial number for local pizza joint.

Love this recipe!

I am in love with this family picture. The mischief in Drew's eye and the fact I saw that white thing in his hand had me rolling on the floor. He reminds me so much of my 22-year old. And the conversation is so much my "Markie". The kid has, I am NOT kidding you, 24 pairs of gym shoes and he always only brings one pair home when he comes home to visit for a weekend. :confused3

:rotfl2::rotfl2: I so love the evolution (de-evolution:confused3) of your son from "Wise 13 year old" to "DWs youngest son". Our children change "ownership" frequently also - I usually try to maintain my "claim" on the middle one, as he is the most consistently best behaved one, and therefore, most like his mother!

Recipe:

Sounds good! Is that from the Cake Mix Doctor?

1 package Rich's (or other brand) dough balls

Um, Glenn? What are Rich's dough balls? I've never seen dough available in ball form :confused3

Darn, I was hoping as I scrolled down that the Sperry's would come into view. Nonetheless, very nice family picture!

I love the story about the eggs and olives. Reminds me of my silly family. My mom's little brother has always been the big jokester in our family. I remember a time when I was a teenager and he was in his mid twenties. It was some sort of family holiday dinner. Charlie had decided it would be funny to randomly insert olives into various dishes. I ended up with a dinner roll with an olive inside it. Luckily, we are a good natured family, so there were a lot of laughs. To this day, even now in his forties, he still occasionally messes with people's food. I recently found a baby carrot in my creme puff. I'd stepped away from the table to get some napkins. My mistake. I didn't see who did it. But I know.:sad2:
