When you say compact do you mean a compact size camera (aka small DSLR) or compact camera? What is your budget? I think more information is needed for those here to give you a recommendation. There are so many cameras out there it needs to be narrowed down. For example, over the last few days there have been at least 49 new cameras announced at the Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas. It can get overwhelming.

DH likes to carry it in his cargo pant pockets. As for price I say no more than $250. It will be used mainly for character and parade pictures.

This past summer dpreview.com did an evaluation of the available compact superzooms. The Casio Exilim FH 100 received excellent ratings. I have attached the conclusions portion of the report and the B & H page. The Casio does fit your budget. I would recommend you find a brick and mortar store and handle it before purchase. One of the others may work better for you, but this should give you a starting point.

A high speed memory card will also assist you, whatever camera you decide on as the camera takes time to 'write' the image to the card.
