When you are shooting with a tripod and need to move some distance away, do you:

I generally leave it on the tripod, fold in the legs and wrap the strap around my wrist carrying the camera by its body and not the tripod legs. Therefore I answered secure it by the strap since that is basically what I do, just not around my neck or I would probably fall on my face. :scared1:

Always take it off the tripod. With a quick release plate it only takes second to remove and replace.

Very true! Plus, since my tripod costs less than $100 I'd rather just not risk it.

If it is only short distances, then I secure it with my strap and leave it attached to the tripod. If I need to hike a long distance, I will detach it with the quick release plate.

I voted to take it off the tripod because your questions said "move some distance away" which I interpret as a fairly long distance. But if I'm just moving around in fairly close proximity (like through a Disney park) I have no trouble putting the camera on the extended tripod over my shoulder and moving around. This is especially true since I started using the Black-Rapid tripod connector and moving the untethered camera back and forth from the tripod to the strap is a little risky feeling in itself.

My "move some distance" I was really thinking about more than just a short shuffle to reposition. Sticking around the Carousel = moving a short distance. Walking from the Carousel to Liberty Square <> moving a short distance.

For me, when I shoot with my 300, which has it's own strap mounts, I usually throw the strap over my shoulder but otherwise leave the camera attached. With anything else, I usually just trust the tripod. I do tighten the main ball screw, the ballhead base, and the part that holds the camera bracket virtually every time that I pick up the tripod.

I will leave the camera on the tripod, tripod legs extended but in, strap around my right wrist and tripod legs held to my body by my right arm, tripod slung over my shoulder with camera just above and behind my shoulder. I've walked miles this way, and use this technique a lot when out birding with my longer lenses - it's a particularly convenient way to carry the big 300mm F4 and Tamron 200-500 lenses long distances in a way where the weight doesn't really affect me. I've walked around World Showcase this way at night when taking night shots, just pulling the extended legs together, slinging over my shoulder, moving to the next country, then setting up again.

When I'm at Disney I always leave my camera on the tripod, tethered to my wrist with the camera strap, but I leave the tripod legs fully extended. I navigate through the crowds wielding the tripod legs like a weapon, thrusting and poking at unsuspecting interlopers and other clueless victims. I figure this is payback for all those people that stand right in front of my tripod right before the fireworks go off.

I am working on a point system that goes something like this:

Victim cries out in total surprise = 1 point
Victim curses = 2 points
Victim loses shoe = 3 points
Victim trips = 4 points
Amputation required = 10 points

I'm with Jeff. Though I don't have the Black-Rapid tripod connector yet.

I'm just not that paranoid.. the quick release plate isn't going to come off the camera, and the lock on the head isn't likely to come unlocked (could happen, but really?). I've been known to carry my camera on the extended tripod upside down :P

This. I'll leave the legs extended if I know my next stop.

Maybe it is a show or a parade leave it all the way on the tripod and if not, use it hand held.

I leave mine on the tripod without a strap. Using RRS heads and clamps, I trust 100% that it will not come off the tripod so I feel comfortable moving the tripod with the camera on.

I have often folded up the tripod and carried it with the camera still attached. This tripod does not have a quick release and the camera, screwed on using the normal screw mount, cannot just fall off.
