View Full Version : A very personal DISCON I story

This story is for everybody teetering on the registration fence.....

Believe it or not, I'm a very quiet person....not great with social skills...pretty much in my own shell. Online, I may be different....sometimes outrageous....and that's a part of me as well. But there's a comfort being in front of a computer screen. You can be anonymous. You're "safe."

Before DISCON I, I pretty much had myself convinced that I would live out my life by myself, with very few close friends. But something told me to register and go to Orlando.

The prospect of meeting a bunch of people I really didn't know absolutely terrified me. I told myself I would have nothing in common with them. I told myself I would spend all my time in my room alone.

Once I landed in Orlando, I got my rental car, checked in to the hotel, smoked many many cigarettes, and headed out to the Wilderness Lodge. I was so nervous. I remember looking up to the stars and saying, "Mom, ya gotta help me get through this." She had passed away a few years before.

I can say without reservation that my life changed that first night. I was welcomed with open arms. I've made friends from all over the world. I've traveled to their homes. I talk to a few of them every day.

DISCON I was the best time, bar none, that I have ever had in my life. I remember Ray Sharpton saying near the end of DISCON that all of us were "friends for life." And, believe it or not, it's true.

There's a line from a song that says "I would walk across the desert with no shoes upon my feet, to share with you the last bite of bread I had to eat." That's exactly how I feel about my DISCON friends.

Please come join us. If you didn't believe before ... trust me ... by the time DISCON II is over .. you will believe in magic.

Thanks for sharing that wonderful story...

I've gotten one about how i ended up deciding to go to DISCON 2

Zurg and I stick with our limited group of friends at home too (I'm much more inclined to venture out then Zurg)...but out of the blue he mentioned he wanted to go to BarbCon this summer. OK i say..knowing I've been interested in going to one of these Mini meets but not wanting to bring it up...figure he wouldn't want to anyway....We had a great time meeting a great bunch of new friends...Barry Hom had a powerpoint presentation of DIS CON I..we both enjoyed watching it...on the way home from Barb's Zurg mentions that it would be kinda fun to attend DIS CON he thought...:D (My open door);) Before he had awaken the next morning I had planned everything for us to go babysitter (my mom), airlines tickets, room(well we changed hotels)......and we are going...Can't wait to meet more great DISer's at DISCON II

Zurgswife forgot to add,

..but Zurg will not like any of you anyway and he will think it was a waste of time and money.

GEEZ! I can't even get good PR spin at home!

Oh and Steve - I'm looking forward to meeting you. Mark my words - I'll be the silly guy who's wife is trying to get him to behave!

Thanks Steve

And people thought the internet would mean only bad things for the world. All of us hunched over our keyboards living vicariously through fantasy made up in cyberspace.

Little did anyone figure the power of friendship.

I don't get out much, can't work anymore, so I spend a lot of time in front of my computer reaching out to others across the way. Having met many of these people in person at DISCON makes them more human. There really are people behind all of the posts here on Pete's boards. People from all walks of life and from all over the world, each with their own story.

That is what makes it great. There will be so many people there that you are bound to make at least one friend for life if not many many friends.

Hope to see you there, friend.

The truth is....Honey Cub is very very shy! I know it's difficult to believe, but he is. They say that 'opposites attract' and I think that is why Steve and I hit it off so well. ;) ;) ;)

Steve is one of my bestest friends now. :) :) :)

I was terrified to meet everyone at barb's this summer. You all seemed so close I thought "no way will I fit in" AND "What if they don't like me as much as they like Barb?"

Came to Barb's and had a great time! I met some wonderful people and everyone was so nice. I also didn't really get to talk to Zurg and Zurgswife...I was too busy helping Barb...so I'm looking forward to DISCON!!

Nancy, it was great to meet you!!! :) :) :) I can't wait to spend more time with you at DIS-Con. It will be so different because you won't have your kids and you and Barb won't be busy being hostesses. ;)

Oh yeah, well unless people wear their signature file as a name tag, I lost.

I have no ability to keep sign on names and real names and face sorted out.

Now what was Barb's real name agian?

Barb
09-12-2002, 10:09 PM
LOL Zurg! My real name is Thelma. ;) ;) ;)

We should have lanyards with our names on them and that helps. We all wore our lime green lanyards all the time we were there. It really helped to spot other DIS people, even if you didn't know who they were! It was so fun!

Goodness, Steve, you're making me cry. We didn't give Steve a chance to be shy. We bombarded him right off the bat! ;) :teeth: Smoochies to you, Steve. ;)

Duly Noted.

I am also staying away from those Surey bikes - sooner or later one is going in the drink - Glo will probably be involved.

I do believe I remember hearing something involving Glo and the surrey bikes from last year's DISCON so you may be on to something Zurg, but please make a memo to not post more than once because after all we do know how to count on this board even if we have no counter. :p

Barb
09-13-2002, 09:08 PM
Zurg, I guess you're really going to stay away from the surrey bikes. You told us three times! (I hate when I do that)

Steve, I am so sorry about Bill's scary driving. I always tell him he's like that Goofy cartoon where Goofy is the very mild mannered guy on the street until he gets behind the wheel of his car. Then he becomes the driver from hell! He really shouldn't do that do people who aren't used to his driving. Then again, I'm not used to it!!!

Zurg

yeah Barb you can count on it.

(wonder how I did that? - the record is five right - hmmm maybe with practice...)

Excuse me??? You are picking on a deathly ill woman here...

Yes, there was an incident, but the bike did not tip over...there were ten other people on the bike besides me. I just over extended my leg while trying to go up the hill be the Swalphin...Geez the nerve of some people (Patrick!!)

Barb

Can we get the real story here????  ;) ;) ;) ;)

glo
09-14-2002, 08:19 AM
the real story???

lets see.......

The truth is I stole a bike....and did a lady Godiva thing around the boardwalk ....I was chased by security, but was able to escape them by driving into the lagoon. I climbed up onto a water taxi, where I was able to get to the Swalphin undetected by hiding on the back awning. How I made it through the lobby and upto my room is another story altogether ;)

Sound better?

honeycub, that is beautiful! I had no idea. The prospect of meeting people you only know online is always scary, but I have yet to meet anyone who was not as wonderful in person as their online personality.

Thank you for sharing that. Now I owe YOU a big hug! ;)

Okay so the moral of the story here is that you should come to DIS CON, even if you are a little nervious or even a lot afraid of meeting new people.

Our boy Steve was very nervous but he found he had a blast. Quoting him, "DISCON I was the best time, bar none, that I have ever had in my life."

If that isn't enough - how are you going to sit home knowing Glo is out stealing bikes and doing the lady Godiva thing around the board walk?

:: pardonnez moi::

Steve is not doing tiaras this year. Nor princess hats. I've decided it's time for me to "butch it up" and wear jeans and flannel....even when it's 90 degrees outside.
