Photography Board WINTER Assignment, 2011: Scavenger Hunt [Archive] - The DIS Discussion Forums

Welcome to the 2011 Photography Board Winter Scavenger Hunt!

This Assignment will run for all of January, February and March.

Rules are fairly simple:

1) Find the items on the list and interpret/photograph them the best way you can.

2) Remember that as part of a photography board assignment meant to get us out using our cameras and improving our skills, we should strive for taking GOOD pictures. Pay attention to the Five C’s: Content, Composition, Color, Clarity and Creativity. All camera types and skill levels are invited to participate.

3) Pictures should be new beginning today.

4) Post as many pictures and categories as you like, there is no limit.

5) While there won’t be a point system, once you post pictures from three categories you’ll be eligible to put the 2011 Photo Board Winter Scavenger Hunt avatar in your signature. (See Below)

6) Have FUN! :goodvibes Keep your cameras handy as you WILL see items when you least expect to!

I'll ask that people try to stick to the rules and items as listed as much as possible. Otherwise, this becomes just another POD thread.

Princess, how about you change the name of your first picture to Critter and go out and find me a real ice sculpture somewhere over there in Oz? No rush, you have three months to look. ;)

:rotfl2: I'll definitely TRY to stick to the rules....I'll change it to Critter. I'm actually heading to California in January; so I'll keep an eye out for the snow stuff. I was going to head to the Ice Bar in Melbourne to see if they had any ice sculptures...The things and places I visit for the sake of a photograph...:teeth:.

ps. I'll still keep an eye out for a "critter"...saw some possums on my roof three nights ago.

Another interesting and challenging list! On first glance, some look a bit tricky for a down under summer, but I have some ideas already!!!

Have to confess - I Googled Floyd Turbo/Mad Bomber Hat because I had no idea that that's what they're called!

Hmmm.....we're only a couple of hours from Punxsutawney, and my oldest DS will be 21 on Feb. 2, which just happens to be Groundhog Day. We've joked over the years about going to the festivities on his 21st, but it's a Wednesday and he'll be away at college.....my brain is going to try to figure out some way to make it work. It's a once-in-a-lifetime thing, maybe he SHOULD miss classes that day.

Ok, better get to work.......

Well I own 3 of them and they are one of the armest hats I've ever own, they are the only winter hat I wear now.

Happy New Year Everyone!

These were taken on New Year's Eve in Melbourne at the early fireworks.

I was in Federation Square, in the heart of Melbourne.

We normally party along the banks of the Yarra River...

But this year, it was 40 C (104 F) at 6 pm. Definitely no snow nor ice DownUnder! So, the 9.15 pm fireworks got moved over to the Sports precinct, where the Melbourne Cricket Ground and Tennis Centre. The area around the sports arenas are apparently easier to defend in case of a fire.

I found a spot along the banks of the Yarra and set the TRIPOD and camera for these shots. f 9.0, ISO 100 and between 4 - 10 secs.

Well, here goes my first entry!! I had nothing better to do this afternoon (after starting work at 330am, and then watching Australia get annihilated in the cricket against England :eek:, oh and getting soaked to the skin coming home from work!!!), so I played with the only snowflake I'm going to see this January in Brisbane!! It's not great, but I was trying a new "toy" to get some bokeh, but I think I need lots more practice! :rotfl: You can see a few little star shapes, though, so something worked!!

Today, Melbourne daytime temperatures hit a high of 30 C (high 70's to low 80's F). Ain't no snow nor ice in Melbourne!....

Vietnamese Pho (pronounced "fur") consists of a soup broth (usually made from pork and beef bones), rice noodles and a protein on top. The one that I like is Rare Beef Pho. The beef is sliced thinly and placed on top of the hot soup/noodles raw. When you mix it into the soup, the heat of the broth cooks the beef. As a result of this, the beef is very tender. The most authentic Pho will have a combination of rare beef and brisket as the protein. Aside from liverworst and pate, I don't do sweetbreads at all!

The Pho comes with vegetable garnishes, which consists of the bean shoots, vietnamese basil, lemon and fresh cut (red) chillies. There are also condiments that go with the dish - namely Hoi Sin sauce (chinese sweet BBQ sauce), chilli sauce and hot chilli oil. I normally put the bean shoots and basil on my beef and then squeeze the lemon all over. I then apply a generous squeeze of the Hoi Sin sauce bottle and a nice dollop of hot chilli oil on my Pho.

There is a standing "Come if you can" once-a-week lunch date with a group of my friends. Would you believe that around noon, the standard email sent to herald the stampede is...."Soup's On!"??? :)

Vegemite, on the other hand, is made from yeast extract (a black residue from the beer making process) and is rich in Vitamin B. It was developed in the mid 1920's as the Australian version of Marmite, which is what the Brits eat. Vegemite has a much more intense flavour than Marmite. The vegemite taste is predominantly very, very salty and if you've applied too much of the black stuff on your toast, you can experience that yeasty tingle on the tip of your tongue.
Most people that have never had Vegemite before and taste it for the first time usually run to rinse their mouths out....about 20 times...before they are happy.

I love it! I was brought up on Marmite and when I came to Australia, my taste buds had to adapt to the more deeply intense and saltier version. I also (sometimes) add a teaspoon of Vegemite to my soup for additional stock flavour.

Vegemite is also part of the Aussie slang..."Happy Little Vegemites", which means that you're happy and contented.
The slang was part of a commercial jingle developed in the 1950's to market Vegemite and the original clip can be found on you-tube here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0yA98MujNeM), and it just became part of the venacular.

The jingle was revived in the 1990's with a newer clip and Kraft also re-played the original commercial on TV. So, a whole new generation of kids (including myself) now know how to sing the song!

This place knows how to make good coffee; so it wasn't really steaming. Besides, the light was in the wrong spot for me to capture hot steam. Maybe next time.

I settled for the Simplicity of Bacon and Eggs for breakfast. The plating style of this establishment follows simple, clean lines on white plates. Only the bare necessities are provided - bacon, eggs, bread and a tomato chutney condiment.

Hello. I am not posting a photo for the scavenger hunt at the moment. Unfortunately the weather here is not conducive to photography for fun. Although I am not directly affected, most of the state of Queensland is flood affected. It is the likes of which I (and many others) have never seen. Yesterday the town of Toowoomba, west of Brisbane, 700m above sea level and with no river in the town was inundated with what has been described as an inland tsunami. 8 people are dead and 72 people are missing. The news footage has been horrifying - I never expected to see anything like it in Australia. Thanks everyone! Luckily I am very high and have no problems. I was due to go to work today, but yesterday I slipped on a wet paver :scared1: and hurt my knee, so I'm not going anywhere. Just watching TV and shocked at the devastation. I remember the floods we had here in 1974, which were a "once in a lifetime" event, and this is supposed to be worse. :eek:
The irony now is that the sun is shining for only the second time since before Christmas! :confused3

Loving everyone’s shots so far…and incredibly jealous of snow and ice scenes!

Culinary/Cooking

A couple of nights ago, we had Risotto for dinner. I started with these ingredients.

I also cooked the Shrimp on a Barbie and put it to one side for later.

Yup! In honour of the Winter hunt, I broke open a bottle to enjoy! Sure fitted with the Y (why?) category as well as Alcoholic Drink; but I'll try and get another AD later on.

Ain’t no snow nor ice in Melbourne…but plenty of rain over the last few days. Sadly, my camera and I have not been quick enough yet…but I did like the composition of this Umbrella in use. Hoping for a better shot before the summer (I mean winter) is out.

2. Select "Properties."
3. Highlight and then "copy" the address. (This will start with http and looks like the name of a website.)
4. Go to User CP and select Edit Signature.
5. If you look above where the writing goes, you will find a small icon with a yellow mountain on it. Click on this.
6. "Paste" the address from Step 3. Click OK.
7. You will now see an IMG sign in your signature.

Angel in snow - I was telling my 81 year old mom, who lives with me, I didn't know where I was going to get a snow angel pic ... she responded with .. "oh I can make a snow angel for you" The look on her face was priceless when I said - "OOKay" To my surprise she actually went and put on her coat, hat, gloves and boots and said ... "Let's go" LOL I feel certain I will have the "oldest snow angel" in the hunt :rotfl:

Glad you liked it. My kids are back in college and we had another 5 inches of snow last night, so I went out and did this myself this morning. If my neighbors were looking out their window, they probably think I am nuts!

I know you said no humans but this is my eye, this is what happens when taking out the garbage and you slip on ice and smack you face on the side of the can with reading glasses on, they wanted to put stitches in but decided it was to close to the eye so tried glue and some sort of strip with glue on it to hold it together, nice huh.

I claim no "points" for this one, but I'm afraid I won't get anywhere near a Zamboni (didn't even know what one was until I googled it!! :confused3 :surfweb:) . Anyway, this would be the Australian summer "equivalent", I would have to think!! This is the roller that rolls the cricket pitches between innings. The captain of the team about to bat decides whether they use a heavy or light roller (I have no idea what difference each one makes), and the groundsmen roll and prepare the pitch prior to the innings starting.

Just a quick hello from Oklahoma, I have to say that I am very excited about our weather the next couple of days. There is a blizzard starting as we speak. I know that sounds crazy, but I am thing about all the great photo I will be getting. I will take a little (8-12inches) white over the plain brown anyday. I am most looking forward to trying to get a snowflake. I do hope that I don't run into any problems like Don, and his poor eye, and I have already had surgery on my knee so none of that either :rotfl:. Well I am going to go get some great shots wish me luck.

Good luck Michelle!! While you are waiting for your snow, over here we are hunkering down before a very large cyclone (hurricane) hits north Queensland. It shouldn't affect us here in Brisbane until it becomes a rain depression and drops inches of rain on already soaked ground!! Oh well, Mother Nature has her ways of testing us, I guess!!

Yesterday, driving in a BLIZZARD, I saw a Smart Car making its way along the road coming off the highway. :eek: I so wish I could have pulled off safely getting a shot, but I was kind of white knucking it myself so I missed it. It was a pretty funny sight, though, we were all laughing.

I have some snow shots but I've got to get them downloaded/uploaded. I'm sure there are others in the same boat. Come on guys, let's get them done TODAY - we're already one month down here!! :hippie:

Well I'm hoping to get my 17 almost 18 year old son to make me a snow angle today, since he's home from school because of the snow storm, but his school teaches there snow day classes on line with the teacher so they don't have to make up any snow days. Thanks! I was out with the dogs and noticed the mailbox across the street. It's really not as desolate as it looks ;), but I liked the way it turned out!

Our snow is pretty much melted, but they are saying more is on the way...

The snowflake was very hard to capture. I had to find something dark to shoot against. I hope to really get something better, but this will have to do for know. I love all your shots, you look like you have as much fun with these hunts as my family does.

Great photos everyone!! Loving the snow photos!
I had a weekend away on the Gold Coast, and I was looking forward to getting the camera out because I hadn't for a while! The Brown Pelicans are the smallest in the pelican family. Like a lot of birds in this part of the world, they were driven to near extinction in the 70’s from the use of DDT and Dieldrin. I was happy to see them as this species is once again thriving in their native environment.

The long-billed curlew is also known as the Candlestick bird. Did you know that Candlestick Park was named after them? These birds were once on the brink of extinction in the 1800’s. They migrate to NorCal in the winter.

Thanks, I used my Canon 180mm macro lens for those shots. I used a black pan that I put in the frezzer so it wasn't warm and melt the snow flakes when I brought it outside. I only wish it was larger flakes, the snow was very fine and small.

Sure was. I was really hopeful for "inside an antique building" when I pulled up....Paid $60 for DS and me to get inside (that's 2 days at WDW, if you buy a 7+ day ticket)....only to be told.....no photography inside :headache:.

I'm glad I stayed...don't know if there will be another repeat visit.

Still, it was an intriguing walk inside the mansion. Never knew which way we were heading and heaps of room. The last two rooms we saw were the formal lounge and the formal dining room. I was so itching to pull the camera out...those two rooms were beautiful! Fantastic woodwork, floor and ceiling, and beautiful leadlights.

I was anxious about DS and hoping that he was going to last the 65 minute tour through the house. As you can clearly tell, he was totally thrilled about our excursion this morning....he figured it was going to be creepy inside

Emergency

This was taken from a Muni bus on 3rd Street. The bus was CRAWLING along. There was some major traffic disruption ahead….we inched on ahead and finally got to Mission. 4 lanes of traffic all trying to head in different directions EXCEPT straight ahead at the same time!

Turns out an earlier bus had ripped down one of the powerlines….

My luck at having the camera in place for scavenger hunt items seems to holding back in Oz….

The second Monday in March is usually a public holiday in Melbourne. Ostensibly, the official public holiday is stated as Labour Day; but as any true blue Melbournian can tell you, it was really the Moomba long weekend party.

Moomba is an aboriginal word that….best we can work out….means “Lets all get together and have fun!”. Celebrations are held along the Yarra River that runs through Melbourne and pretty much kick off on the Friday all the way through to Labour Day (Moomba) Monday public holiday.

Aside from the standard carnival rides and food stalls, the other Moomba activities include DragonBoat Racing, Waterskiing, Birdman Rally, cultural events, Fireworks and a Parade. I took the opportunity to enjoy the festivities and managed to snag these scavenger hunt items.

(Someone) Waving at me – When I was taking a shot of the last steeple, these guys stopped in front of the camera as a joke. I took a picture of them in response and I figured this was Gen Y’s idea of Waving at me!

Thanks Heather! I was actually setting up for the fireworks that was on offer that night. Not sure if you noticed but there are some pontoons on the water and I set up in front of them with every intention of getting fireworks and the cityscape. Sadly, my particular set of 3 pontoons were pesky and they wouldn't get into the proper position. They decided to set off the fireworks from the other 3 or 4 sets of pontoons along the river....and the ones I was positioned in front off....stayed dormant! :headache:

NEXT year!
