OK, so I had a thought. (I know, treat it gently). Those of us who signed up for the Buckingham Palace "Royal Day Out" tour for Sep. 2 at 10am... Well, since that's the day the ABD starts, I'm going to have to be checked out of my hotel before I head over to the Palace. Maybe you guys are staying at the ABD hotel for your pre-days? I'm not. I don't know that I can check into the ABD hotel at that hour. What the heck am I going to do with my luggage? And how am I going to get that all done & meet you by 10am? RATS! I can't believe I didn't think of this!

99 daysI think I would have to kill somebody!!!! I dealt with this all a year ago with my Med cruise. Barcelona airport closed just a couple of days before my flight!!! I was not sure my flight would be able to land... I do NOT want to have to deal with that again! Right now, I'm worried for Teresa & Pete & Walter, who are leaving today. I don't know where they are flying through or if they're going direct.... It looks like it's just Northern Great Britain at this time.

So apparently there is a letter at home that my room mates tell me is from the Queen, I think they think I'm being invited to dinner or being knighted or something. I guess it is merely a ticket to Buckingham Palace - but the thought of them sitting in our kitchen and figuring out how to steam it open is hysterical.

KevinHey, Kevin. I was thinking about this (I know, a dangerous pastime!) I hope you don't think I was criticizing or complaining about DU? It's me; I tend to get very paranoid that I entered something wrong, or that the Internet ate my payment, so the fact that I didn't get a confirmation fed my paranoia. For those of you that sent away for tickets to the Ceremony of the Keys, did you have an awful time finding International Reply Coupons? I finally just ordered them from the USPS website. I thought it would be faster to actually go to the post office and take care of the coupons and shipping all at the same time. Evidently, all the postal workers I've dealt with have decided that the coupons don't exist any longer without even looking. It's funny that it took me only a couple of seconds to find them on their website. FRUSTRATING!!!:headache:

I went to the Post Office near work (because I, like you, thought it would be easiest to take care of it all at once). They told me a guy who gets them regularly had bought close to 50 of them just the day before, and luckily, they still had a few left; he hadn't totally wiped them out. So I was able to buy 2 with no problems, and sent my request off. I'm not sure if that's normal or not! They totally knew what I was asking for.

Dang. I knew I should have posted
my drama from last week! I went to a post office branch near my
house, and they said they stopped
selling them "a long time ago". And
suggested I try the main branch.

I went to the main branch, and
they told me they stopped selling
them, too.

I found them immediately at
usps.com. The Ceremony of the
Keys website encouraged people
to go to usps.com. I should have
taken that suggestion.

My International Reply Coupons
arrived last Thursday, and I mailed
my request this past Saturday. For
a "free ticket", I paid close to $20
in postage inbound and outbound.
And it isn't guaranteed.

I will wish us both luck. Oh. Want
to hear the kicker? I am finally
looking at the Rick Steves London
guidebook I checked out from the
library. He has a small blurb in the
Tower of London section about
Ceremony of the Keys. I nearly fell
over reading that some readers
are reporting difficulty finding
International Reply Coupons, so
we should try usps.com. LOL!

I'm sorry that you had trouble too. It makes me feel better that I'm not the only one though. May be a stupid question but with the coupons, do I need to include an envelope for the ticket to be sent back? The website said to enclose a self-addressed envelope with British postage but is it the same with the coupons? It was not very clear. What did you do?

MinnieGarden
06-01-2011, 05:16 PM
I sent in a self addressed envelope with the coupons. When the ticket came back, it was in the envelope I sent with a British stamp that had been exchanged for the coupons that I had sent. I also FedEx'd the request. Our postal service scares me for domestic mail, so I wanted to make sure this got there! And, it was processed the day it was received at the Tower of London. Good luck!

I've listened to Pete, Walter, and Theresa's podcast segment this week and their trip sounds FABULOUS!

And it's got me thinking about a couple of things....... it sounds like there are two main guides for the group (that get a gratuitity at the end of the adventure) and a couple of others that sounded more specialized. Do they get a tip too?:confused3

And most importantly, I happen to know there are a few wine drinkers in our group... is wine included at meals for us too? That would be a huge thing! :rolleyes1

I noticed my last post had been weird because it's a PITA to post with quotes on the iPhone via ETicket. :rotfl2: Anyway, I thought of the International Reply Coupons as "postage vouchers" good for postage exchanges anywhere in the world.

I did not send it Fed Ex, but I paid some sort of Priority Mail thing with a customs doc on it. I hope it goes through.

As far as the local guides (and bus drivers) are concerned, their tips are included in the cost of the trip. So you don't need to tip them yourself (obviously, you CAN if you feel they deserve an extra tip, but it's not expected). The 2 Adventure Guides are the only people you're expected to tip.

The person that wrote the webpage (http://www.disboards.com/%28http://www.united.com/page/article/0,6867,52482,00.html#international%29)for United's baggage fees needs to be sent back to basic technical writing but if I read the chart correctly, the second bag fee should be $50, not $70.

You might also check into United's "Presidential Pluss Card (https://www.continental.com/web/en-US/content/travel/baggage/chasebag.aspx)." I have Delta (AX) and gold skymiles card holders don't pay baggage fees. The annual fee is $95 but that cost is offset by one trip per year by two people with one bag each. (2x25x2). Having an additional promotional credit card might not be palatable for some, but it was a no brainer for me since I already had a Skymiles card.

I've got multiple thoughts running through my mind. We've got less than 3 months and I've got some planning to do.

Does anyone know when we will be "surprised" with the London Eye?
Since I can't join the group going on the 2nd, I'm looking into going to Buckingham Palace on the afternoon of the 3rd. Anyone want to join me?
We don't have as much free time in Paris. Anyone got plans outside of the items on the tour?
Walking shoes. Has anyone tried Cole Haan shoes? Are they as comfortable as advertised?
I'm a Doctor Who fan...not extreme but love the show. Should I take time to do the Doctor Who Experience? I think it would be fun but I'll be in London...

Welcome to the world of random thoughts from Christy's mind when she should be working....

I'm in the same boat with you with Buckingham Palace, since my flight is scheduled to arrive 11:15am thereabouts. I'm torn because I might want to do other things more. I don't know when I'll have time to see the British Museum, and I know I want to do that, too.

I have 2 pairs of wonderful Cole Haan pumps. While they are comfortable, they take a while to break in. I'm going to go with a couple of pairs of Merrell's. They have a microfiber type fabric that will dry quickly and should hold up nicely if there's rain.

The British currency is the pound sterling. The sign for the pound is

GBP = Great British Pound

We do not use the Euro. Although a few of the big shops will accept Euro, it is rarely used across Britain.

Since decimalisation in 1971 , the pound has been divided into 100 pence.

The pound () is made up of 100 pence (p) exactly like the dollar is split into 100 cents.

The singular of pence is "penny". The symbol for the penny is "p"; hence an amount such as 50p is often pronounced "fifty pee" rather than "fifty pence".

We have both coins and banknotes.

Current coins are:

1 penny
2 pence
5 pence
10 pence
20 pence
50 pence
1 pound
2 pounds

Current bank notes are:

5 pound note
10 pound note
20 pound note
50 pound note

Old money conversions to money used today

Six pence - 2p
One shilling (or 'bob') - 5p
Half a crown (2 shillings and sixpence) - 12p
One guinea - 1.05

Years of planning and preparation went into the euro’s design to find a good balance of aesthetic appeal, practical dimensions and security features – resulting in the seven banknotes and eight coins designed for the launch in January 2002.

The notes share the same designs across all countries in the euro area. The coins have a common design on one side and a country-specific design on the other.

The European Central Bank (ECB) has the exclusive right to authorise the issue of euro banknotes by the national central banks of the euro area. The responsibility for producing them and putting them into circulation is shared among national central banks. Coins are issued by euro area Member States in volumes approved each year by the ECB and production is entrusted to the national mints.

Greek and Latin inspiration

Like all currencies the euro has a name and a symbol:

The name – the euro – was chosen by the European Council meeting in Madrid in 1995 as part of the preparations for the single currency.
The euro symbol – € – was inspired by the Greek letter epsilon (?). It also stands for the first letter of the word ‘Europe’ in the Latin alphabet, while the two parallel lines running through the symbol signify stability. The European Commission organised an internal competition to come up with the euro symbol. Some 30 drafts were considered – ten of which were tested on the public – and the final design was selected from two short-listed proposals by the then President of the Commission, Jacques Santer, and Commissioner Yves Thibault de Silguy in 1995.
All shapes and sizes

The different sizes and contrasting colours and relief patterns of euro banknotes help people – including the visually impaired – recognise the denominations. The notes come in 5-, 10-, 20-, 50-, 100-, 200- and 500-euro denominations. There are various security features in the notes, such as a watermark, security thread and hologram, to stop counterfeiters and help recognise a genuine banknote.

Advanced technical specifications were also developed for the coins, making illegal reproduction, especially for the 1- and 2-euro coins, extremely difficult. The eight denominations of coins vary in size, colour and thickness according to their values, which are 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 cents, and 1 euro and 2 euros.

The majority of the time, you'll be able to use the normal credit card. Most shops and restaurants don't need the "smart chip" in it. Usually the automated machines like at the Metro station won't take our cards, and things like gas stations with pay at the pump. But that's not going to be a factor for us.

We'll be fine. I intend to take money out with my debit card as well.

Adam Gopnik's book is not food-centered. There are certainly food stories, but many other great pieces. He moved his young family to Paris in 1995, and the book chronicles their experiences. He is a fabulous writer. One of my favorite pieces recounts a visit to the famous taxidermist shop, Deyrolle, told with lovely wry humor. Some of the pieces previously appeared in The New Yorker.

Tobi,

I think you might enjoy The Sweet Life too. There are lots of little anecdotes about customs in Paris. You can just skip over the recipes. I'll be returning it to the library this week.
LaurieThanks, Laurie. Should I hop over to the library in your neck of the woods? :)

More refurbs at DLP

More scaffolding has appeared in Disneyland Paris, as work has stated to cover Captain Hook's Pirate Ship in Adventureland which will soon replaced by a new brand new galleon.

Don't worry, us Brits are just as addicted to caffeine as the rest of the western world. We always ask 'coffee or tea?' and we have coffee shops on almost every street corner, you won't be left wanting!

Two by Two, I believe....There are just so many great songs, great harmonies, and clever writing. It is a fantastic libretto.

Who knew that they based much of Battlestar Galactica on Mormonism? Even the name of Earth is Kobol, which is an anagram of Kolob (the home planet of God).

...But I pray I am sent to my favorite Place,
Orlando, Orlando, I love you,

How is everyone going to handle the money situation? Are you going to attempt to get pounds/euros before the trip? If so, how much do you think someone would need just to get by before hitting an ATM or using debit/credit? Do you plan only to use the ATM or depend on your debit/credit card once you get there?

I want to arrive with the correct currency but don't want to be carrying around a bunch of cash. I am so in the dark when it comes to this type of thing. How do you even get the correct currency beforehand? Can most banks help you with that exchange?

I'm off to do research....

When I opened my account at Chase at the beginning of the year, I asked the same question. You can order foreign currency from the bank without fees, at the current exchange rate. Since we are in Houston, we can get it in 24 hours, but that may vary based on where you live.

They also told me there are certain banks in Europe with ATMs that you can use. I haven't asked which ones......

I asked my bank about this and I'm told that I can order up to $999 at the current exchange rate for a $10 fee.

Over $999 and the fee jumps to $20

I was told I would be able to have British pounds and euros in 24 hours.

When I went to the Med last year, AAA exchanged currency for me and did not charge a transaction fee. It was the prevailing rate I saw. I think it was a 2-day turnaround. You need to be a AAA member, I believe.

I still have some euros left from last year, so I'll probably be OK for that. I plan on buying some British pounds before I leave, because I'm spend 6 days in England before the tour. I'm hoping to pre-buy everything I can (train passes, entry to attractions, etc) and will use my credit card whenever possible (Capitol One has no foreign transaction fees). I haven't figured out exactly how much cash I'm going to be bringing with me. I know I plan to take a taxi from my hotel to the ABD hotel. Probably a couple of other times. I think I can buy an Oyster card using my credit card (I don't know if you can pre-buy those...) I don't know if taxis in London take credit cards... I need to find that out!

I also haven't decided what currency I'm going to tip the Guides in. I'm thinking the easiest would likely be hitting an ATM at DLP and giving them Euros. I don't know that I want to carry the cash for their tips with me for the whole tour...

I am still in the midst of listening. I heard about Rome and now can't blame them for "going rogue" in Florence. I haven't heard the details of that yet.

But I'm with Pete on this. If I had that guide who rushed us through what we wanted to see just so we could spend time at the Vatican gift shop for her kickback, I'd have wanted to smack her. At that point, I would have told her I will not step foot in the damn gift shop.

And Restaurante Americano would have offended me on SO many levels. I don't go to experience another culture by looking for "American" food.

Thanks for everyones input on the currency exchange. I'm leaning toward getting a smaller amount of both pounds and euros. I'll then visit an ATM or use my card as needed. I'll check in with my bank to see what the turnaround time is to receive the currency.

I'm so glad that I have others to bounce all of my questions off of...I would be in a state (as in pulling my hair out) without you all. THANKS!! :goodvibes
