I'm making my Christmas list and need some help please.
My daughter uses a Canon 9D and I want to give her a better flash. I am looking at a Speedlite. Which one would you suggest and what is the difference in them please?
Thanks,
Penny

Canon doesn't make a 9D, only a 7D.
The flagship flash is the 580exii which is comparable to the 430exii in normal use. The 580exii has a bit more power, plus professional features like a sync port, external battery port and has the ability to control other flashes remotely.
Now the 580exii is $450, the 430exii is half that. Unless they are a pro, I'd seriously consider the 430exii.

You are so right, I was in a hurry and hit the wrong key.
And thank you for the answer and explanation.

I'd go with the 430 also. A nice feature of the 7D is that it can control flashes (like the 430) with it's on-board flash too.

Thank you too. I try to read up on these things but there is nothing like asking someone with experience.

I have a 220EX and although it is not very powerful (about twice the power of the built in flash) it does have very fast recycle time. If you want more power then the 430 is probably a good choice.
The 220 has been replaced by the 270, smaller and lighter with almost the same recycle time.

I'm very happy with my 430EXII. It has a good range and power, and if you use the Energizer lithium AA batteries it recycles VERY fast.

Dang! That's an expensive way to run a flash! I know I use regular batteries from time to time. ;0 A nice set of rechargeable are great, you just have to remember to charge them the night before you want to use them if you camera sits for long times.

Lol, Lithium batteries are $17 for a 4 pack up here, you guys are lucky they are ONLY $16 for an 8 pack down there! I've had my lithiums in my flash for at least 150 cycles with no sigh of fizzling out...
