I was planning on wearing a bridesmaid's dress for the first formal night. I like to get dressed up. It's floor-length, and that David's Bridal satin. Appropriate? Yes or No

I have no idea being as I have never been on the 7 day to experience formal night....However, if you're interested in my opinion.....I say absolutely you should go for it! I have 2 bridesmaids dresses in my closet that cost over $100 each and have been worn one time each. I'm not likely to wear either of them again either due to style and color (One is a bright satin fire engine red!)

Anyway, as long as the dress isn't white(therefore making you look like a bride) I would say you should take advantage of the opportunity to wear it.

Thanks for your input. The dress is actually quite pretty, as it should be as I picked it out! Nothing as glamourous as fire engine red, but a nice, sedate plum (or maybe it's eggplant?). The only thing I'm worried about is my great farmer's tan! Luckily, th dress came with one of those wraps

I just got back from the seven day. On formal night I saw a variety of dress. About 35% of the men were in tuxes, another 55% in suits with ties, 10% in sports coats with dress slacks, 3% in dress slacks with a dress shirt and tie (they might have had the jacket over the chair and I didn't see it), and yes, there were a few slobs who came in shorts and t-shirts. The ones who didn't dress up really stood out, and I heard more than one person say that they shouldn't have been allowed into the dining room that night.

The women had everything from taffeta gowns to sequins to simple black cocktail dresses, with a few in "church dresses" and a very few in sundresses/casual dresses.

The kids ranged from chino's with dress shirts and ties to tuxes, and anything in between.

One family were all dressed very inappropriately. Heck, they were inappropriate for Mc D's (the very overweight daughter was in a denim miniskirt so short her panties literally showed from the backside). Even my DS was grossed out. The father was particularly disgusting in a sweat stained tank top and cutoffs. YUCK!

Back to the OP. By all means, where the gown! You will fit right in. I would say that over half the women had gowns/long dresses on. For the most part everyone looked so elegant. It really made the evening special :)

On our 7 night last December, I did not bring any formal wear, and I felt rather out of place! I sucked it up... didn't let it bother me too much, but this year, my daughter and I are going all out with floor length gowns...

By all means, recycle that bridesmaid's dress! It sounds lovely. I'm going on the 9/7 7-day cruise leaving Saturday (can't wait!:Pinkbounc ) and I'm bringing a long 1-pc. teal dress with a sequined tank and satin skirt. I like clothes and dressing up too, so I totally understand. Go for it!;)

I guess he was exercising his Castaway Club membership.

Absolutely wear the dress. For formal night I'm wearing a sequined/beaded gown and for semiformal evening I'll be wearing ivory (as in ivory wedding gown) as it's the night of our renewal.

Being the one dressed up you'll not feel out of place at all. It only adds to the ambiance of the evening.

Enjoy your cruise.

I hope that this will be suitable for formal night. I purchased a nice pantsuit earlier in the summer that has an ivory sleeveless top with sequins and the pants are black with a little fuchia and ivory on them. It is pretty dressy. I do not have any bridesmaid's gowns to wear, as I have only been in one wedding and that was mine. There is no way I could even pack that dress, much less wear it again. There have been times I wish I could wear it again. I LOVE that dress!

Hope to see those on the 9-21 Eastern cruise!

I have 3 long skirt w/matching top outfits. The 2 different black ones will be worn to formal & semi-formal nights.
The navy will be worn to Lumiere's if we go there on rotation night.

Sounds fine. You won't be the most dressed up, but certainly not the least either. :) Just an FYI, there are a ton of end of season formal sales right now, I've seen dresses for as low as $15 at Penney's!

:jester: By all means please dress up! I was on the Magic the week of May 25th and was somewhat disappointed at the lack of people dressed formally. That was our 4th cruise and this was the most casual cruise line. It is nice to add a little "class" to your life. How often do you get a chance to dress up! Don't get me wrong, there were some people who dressed nicely, but when we saw the shorts among the formalwear we just shook our heads. My husband was in a tux for both formal nights and he looked awesome! I also had 2 gowns myself. Enjoy yourself!

We recently sailed on the 8/3 Magic and we all dressed up. My DD's 18 and 14 each wore there Prom/homecoming gowns and were thrilled to get another use out of them.

I wore a floor length black dress with key hole neck with black simple beading. We all felt very special dressed up!!!

My hubby and son each wore a suit with tie and fit right in.

I would easily say the majority of people were dressed up appropriately.

ducklite....I think we had that same family on one of our previous cruises!...YUCK, ETC.

I'm really glad I read this. I have a $500 beaded lace and illusion gown that I wore once to my step-son's wedding. I'm wearing it on my 9/21 cruise. I forgot about it last time we cruised. Thanks to all who reminded me! Anita.

I say go for it... My DD will be wearing one of her homecoming formals and a black formal she wears for concerts and performances (she has played cello for 8 years). I have decided to take one long gown and the informal night will be a very dressy navy pant and tank with sequined jacket. The DDBF will be in a tux (He wears one for concerts also and plays string base). He is planning on adding a Mickey tie and cummerbund one night and a Goofy the next. LOL.. We are going to be having such a grand time... The last formal night is actually my DD's 18th Birthday so we wil be celebrating in style... Could not have asked for better timing.

Wear the dress !!!

I'll add to the chorus too, Eileen.

We were on the 8/10 Magic cruise. Our DD, 11, was in a wedding over Memorial Day weekend, and had a genuine VERA WANG Jr. Bridesmaid dress   .

You bet I was going to get as much use out of it as I could, before DD outgrows it!! Needless to say, she wore that on Formal Night . . .;)

We sail on the Magic Jan 25th. I am hoping to find something with sequins on sale.;) I am little nervous about waiting until just three weeks before the cruise. . . .what if I can't find anything :(

Wish me luck with that!!!

Absolutely! I wore a dress on my DCL cruise last September that I wore as the MOH in my Best Friends Wedding (Green satin from David's Bridal!) The Bride and her husband were on our cruise and she was so happy that she chose something that I actually COULD wear again. :) She also wore the dress that she wore in my wedding on the ship too! :)

EileenAmI,

Glad you can get some reuse out of your Bridesmaid dress, I have one that you need to wear a half hoop skirt under and is a color that absolutly does not go with my skin tone. (Hope the Bride that made me wear this dress doesn't read these boards!) Why I am still storing this dress is beyond me!

I see you are from Havertown. I lived there until I was almost 15. Seeing the address on your profile bought back many good memories. I unfortunately haven't been back in a very, very, very long time. I use to live on Colfax Road. Ever heard of it? I have the fondest memories of playing at a large playgound located behind my house, that had a few ball fields and tennis courts.

NJ Family,

I know I've seen the street sign, but can't remember quite where. We are right by the Llannerch Golf course. That hoop skirt thing soucds terrible! My sister-in-law made us where "sage" gowns for her wedding, and since I'm so fair, it completely washed out everything!! Needless to say, that dress went directly to the thrift shop the day after the wedding
