:welcome: Welcome to the DIS Dad's Club (DDC) thread! :welcome:

"Home of Man Laws and Cheese Balls"

This thread is for all of the DIS Dad's out there! The club was originally created by one dad (The Disney Fanatic (http://disboards.com/member.php?u=157385)) back in November 2007 who was curious to find out how many other dads on the DIS who are just as Fanatical about Disney World! Since that time we have gone through 5 forum threads with more than 18,000 posts, created a group on the Disney Family Community web site (http://family.go.com/community/groups/dis-dads-club-grp/) and have a Facebook group (http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/gr...2305480&v=wall). On April 5th, 2010, the DDC started it's own fundraising for Give Kids The World (http://www.firstgiving.com/disdadsclub)! We thank The Disney Fanatic most of all for being so inquisitive in the first place!

What is the criteria for joining this club? :confused3 I am glad you asked. If you are a Dad and ANY of the following criteria describes you, you qualify to become a member of the DIS Dad's Club.

The DIS Dad's Club Criteria:

You have a wife that thinks you are a big kid.
You watch the Free WDW DVDs every week. :happytv:

Over the course of time there have been a few instances where lines have been drawn in the sand and certain members have become sworn enemies... wait... no that's not right. Sworn nemesis (Def: A formidable and usually victorious rival or opponent)! Below is the current list of those who have announced their foes.

Trennr vs. Stopher1
FreezinRafiki vs. That's Nice
ClearScreen vs. AJRitz
Captain_Oblivious vs. Middlepat

This list changes frequently and may not accurately reflect the current views of the said members in this list. Allegiance to any particular member can and most likely will result in terrible consequences, such as name-calling, nasty comments, and the occasional crop-dusting.

I can think of 3:
1. The Original. The Alpha. The Numero Uno. The ever impressive, the long-contained, the often imitated, but never duplicated...
FreezinRafiki vs that's nice

I know we had each started recruiting armies/minions/henchmen, but I don't recall who was on each side. I'll have to check with my HR department on that. But honestly, I haven't paid them yet so I would be surprised if they'd all abandoned camp.

Fisrt of all thanks Emma's Dad for setting up the new thread. Gotta love that nice, clean, roomy new thread.

That and I'm officially throwing down the nemesis challenge to CaptainOblivious. I'm sick of this Flyers fan, first state banner waving always picking on me. Besides, I have *Blares Horn* envy.

Nice work Don!

I need to get cracking on my trip report. Once I get it wrapped up, I can finally start devoting the time to disdads.com that it deserves. Hmmmm... interesting scenario. Seeing how Kathy IS the admin/moderator... should she still have the same rights to a last post award? I think the judge's ruling on that is.... NO.

Now this bring up another important question... Should Mark STILL be awarded the last post award since the thread was reopened? I would think this would be similar to an overtime situation. Too bad everyone else was in the shower room...

Last post award still awarded to Mark. Congrats, Mark!

(and try not to provoke someone else off the sidelines to declare war on me).
It’s a delicate thing; this nemesis business.

Well now that I’ve had a chance to look around I see that y'all really do got this place lookin’ good.

So I'm looking into dining options for our time in WDW in May next year. I'm wondering... who here has had the opportunity to enjoy the California Grill? Is it really as good as the reviews say it is?

We ate there in August and it was fantastic. It is very comparable to most high-end restaurants in my area (New York).

I had the sushi and it was superb. I think my wife had a lamb dish and she loved it. They also treated the kids great - my son has food allergies and they were very accomodating to him, as were most places at Disney. The view is unbelievable, especially for the fireworks and they pipe the music right into the restaurant. We chose to stay inside and watch from the window, but many people went outside and watched from the deck.

They made this dessert for the kids which looked like sushi. Instead of rice, they used rice krispy treats. For nori (seaweed) they used fruit roll-ups. For fish, they used swedish fish or some other gummy-type candy. For soy sauce, I think it was a chocolate dipping sauce. It was very cool and clever.

Make sure you make a reservation that lets you watch the fireworks during dessert. The wait staff will slow down your meal to make that happen if you want. Otherwise you are allowed to come back and watch the fireworks, but we just thought it was great to see the fireworks during dessert.

Our three favorite meals were California Grill, Narcoossees and Raglan Road (more for the different type of food and entertainment).

One more thing, California Grill is very expensive. Our bill, which included a bottle of wine, was well over $200 (I think it was $300 actualy). My wife and I each had an appetizer, entree and dessert and the kids each had a kids' entree and dessert. For us, it was definitely worth it.

We ate at California Grill about a month ago. We parked the kids at the Neverland Club and made it a Parents' Night Out. The food was very good and the view is excellent. I have to say that I didn't find the food to be spectacular, but that may have been a function of what we ordered. It did feel rather crowded for an intimate high-end dining experience. We had hoped to watch the fireworks at the MK from the observation deck, but our timing was a bit off (forgot that it was a MNSSHP night, so the fireworks start time was different) and it was chillier at night than we expected, so we decided not to wait around.

Thanks for the reviews, guys! I hadn't even given the place a thought until recently. Going with the regular dining plan this next year so I had some reservations to make. DW is always on me about trying new places... so this one sounded like a good choice.
We are very early dinner eaters (5:00 normally) so eating that late isn't an option to see the fireworks. BUT...then I read the fine print that says if you dined with them earlier in the day just show the receipt and they will let you back in to the balcony. Sounds like a plan to me :)

Does anyone here own a second home?

DW & I are thinking of buying a home in the Orlando area. The housing market is so bad down there it is like people are giving houses away. We have found a few 4-5 bedroom 2500sqft+ houses around $150K just minutes from WDW. We are trying to figure out goes into having a 2nd home as a rental. We figure if we can rent it 12 times a year the mortgage will be paid for. 15-16 times a year and all the bills (utility, phone, management co., cleaning service) would be paid for as well. I'm sure it would take a while to get it booked that many times but even if we were able to get a few bookings a year, that would defray the overall cost.

DWs cousin lives in the area and I'm sure he would help me out with a house if there was a major problem with something. Another factor is that good friends of ours were thinking about buying a second home as well. When I say good friends I mean that I have known my friend Dave since grammar school and I would do anything for him. We are the legal guardians for their kids if -God forbid- anything ever happened to them. So if they did go in with us, all of our costs would be split in half. I don't know if anyone has experience with being co-owner of a property?

I know there are so many variables in owning and renting a property. I am trying to educate myself and seeing if it is worth my time, money, and sanity.:scared: It would be so nice having a property of our own in Orlando because DWs grandfather is 2 hours away and she has other family in the area as well.

Cliff Huxtable. But only because I look awesome in sweaters.

Afternoon gentleman. Was told to stop by and visit by a DIS Dad new friend. Just joined DIS boards a few months ago to do research for our DCL trip. needless to say I am hooked on DCL and plan on sticking around for a long time...I have nothing better to do than plan our next DCL trip.

One of these years we may actually make it down to Disneyworld for the family, but right now only 588 days until our next trip. :woohoo:

Fulfilling my DISDad duties tonight. DD has two friends over for a sleepover. They're watching Hercules right now, then I'm going to attempt to get them to go to sleep (I'm bringing them all to Sunday School tomorrow morning - glad I've got that extra hour to work with).

You've got to let us know how it went.
And by the way - I think you can remove the Neophyte DisDad tag from your avatar. You've been to WDW and have survived several DDC threads. Go ahead and upgrade yourself!

Welcome aboard Jason!

Hey all. Well I have finally, after 3 different weekends of working on it - finally gotten my garage, backyard and patio ready for winter. All of the spring/summer/fall gear is put away, covered up, etc. Finally I can say - bring on winter. We can park inside the garage again, and everything is ready to go. We had flurries yesterday, so it is lurking around out there .... somewhere. AND... I'm just 4 weeks out from my flight to MCO and the December visit to the World. :santa: Definitely looking forward to that, and seeing/meeting several of you all in person while there.

Flurries? Ay caramba. I'm still nervously watching the grass and hoping we get enough frost that I won't have to mow it again.

You guys need to get Vick back starting. Wow, it felt weird typing that. :lmao::lmao:

He's back today! Andy Reid has never lost after the bye week, and Peyton Manning has never lost to the Eagles. So something has to give.

:lmao: I bet that you really enjoyed that extra hour of sleep too :rolleyes1

Yep, sad but true. We've had morning temps in the high 20's and low 30's all week, with frost on the grass/plants / vehicles left out each day. Of course tomorrow through Wednesday is supposed to be daytime temps in the '60's, but that second plunge is coming.... soon I'm sure. I leave the cars out on the driveway all through Spring, Summer and Fall so the kids can have their bikes down, assorted things strewn around, and we can easily maneuever through the garage... but come winter - everything MUST be put away so we can park inside again. I insulated our garage several years back, so the cars during the winter parked INSIDE stay at about 40-50 degrees, which is a whale of a lot better than the outside temps - especially when it gets down to single or negative digits!

Well, flurries or not, I've only mowed twice since July 4. We've had almost no rain the second half of the summer, I mowed once in late July and mowed again probably mid September. I'm a little farther south than Stopher and we saw flurries here too, but it has been nice the past 2 afternoons and should be nice this week. I've been getting some other yardwork done and getting things ready for winter too.

Howdy All,
Just checking in. Been another busy weekend, but things should really calm down for a bit now. I’ve got 40 days to finish getting prepped for our trip to The World and we’re all getting pretty antsy. I’m starting my monthly 6 to 3 tomorrow, so I’m actually grateful for the extra hour of sleep.

One more thing (and I swear this is the last Band Geek Post that I’ll put up for a while (unless any of y’all are foolish enough to comment on this one). As I said near the close of the last thread, our little HS Band went out and won themselves a second consecutive state championship. As is the rule around here: “Pictures or it didn’t happen.”, and a couple of you asked for a video. Well… you did ask. Several folks have actually posted their version of the show and the link below goes to one of the best ones (When I get a copy of the official recording I may rip and post that, but this is good for now).

Like I said we’re all really proud of these kids and they were really smokin’ that night, but see what you think (note: the sound kicks in at about the 16 second mark)

That was a nail-biter of a game (Eagles-Colts, I mean). I don't normally complain about officiating because it typically evens out, but some of the calls last night were awful. What did they look like from a Colts point of view?

I think there was something in the coffee the NFL officials were drinking on Sunday morning. I just read somewhere that, across the league yesterday, an average of 15 penalties/game were called. I've seen more bad calls on pass interference/not pass interference in the last three weeks than I've seen in years. It's just been awful. Officials have not been in proper position to make the calls, and seem to be guessing about whether/how significant contact was made.

As for the Cowboys, the root of the problem is the owner. He runs out of town anyone who questions his judgment on personnel or game planning matters (e.g. Parcells). So he ends up spending a ton of money on players that, while they may be individually talented, don't mesh together well as a team. He ends up with a locker room full of selfish malcontents. And their drafts of late have been awful. They draft like Dave Kingman used to swing at baseballs. Every pick is a huge swing - and they end up striking out more than they hit homeruns. There's no reason that they should have entered this season expecting Alex Barron to be a starting NFL left tackle - he was let go by a team with a glaring need at the position (the Rams) because he couldn't handle right tackle.

It's been frustrating being a Chiefs fan the last few years, but at least the ownership has been (mostly) honest about a rebuilding effort and not pretending that they were poised for a Super Bowl run. I can't imagine how frustrating it must be to be a Cowboy fan right now, and see just how deep a pile of peanut butter Jerry Jones has been shoveling on top of them for the last three years (at least).

When I watch a game, I always try to keep a level perspective of the officiating. I realize these guys are watching top notch athletes at full speed and have to make split second decisions while we have the advantage of instant replay and multiple camera angles.

The 15 yarder for the helmet to helmet with Collie was borderline, but with the NFL cracking down that's gonna be called every time now. I thought they missed a horsecollar on Garcon, but we're very sensitive about losing receivers at this point and it was really close enough to go either way anyway.
Overall, yeah, I think this crew will be having a sitdown with the NFL braintrust. They made some bad calls both ways, but they seemed penalty happy and it felt like they wanted to make their mark on the game... I thought they did a good job of being questionable at best on some small things and missing some big ones. I thought the ref looked like a deer in the headlights a few times when he was talking to the teams or on the mic explaining a call.

Are they still doing the cash card or fast pass promo for your birthday. Last year it was a free day, cash card or fast pass for your birthday promo. Is that gone? It will be our sons 12th birthday while we are there and was just curious. Thank you oh great bath of knowledge! :worship::worship::worship:

They draft like Dave Kingman used to swing at baseballs. Every pick is a huge swing - and they end up striking out more than they hit homeruns.

Nice analogy!

When Kong connected (granted, not too often) they sure went a long way. I don't even think he was on steroids.

:rotfl2::lmao::rotfl: That Kingman comment is great. Well said!

I like what your Chiefs are doing right now. Everybody knows you've got to have a good QB (even if not great) to win and they went and got one. They're doing a great job of building from the ground up. If you think about it, they really were only "irrelevant" for about 4 years or so before getting back to being a team to beat. They had probably the best 2010 draft class in the league, and if they can keep avoiding Jerry Jones' draft tactics, they will be a fixture in the playoffs soon and for years to come.

That promo ended a little over a year ago. It was replaced with the Give A Day/Get A Day volunteering promotion, which was so popular that they cut it off after only three months.

I love being a Packer fan. As a publicly traded company, we have no owner. The shareholders elect a board of directors, which elect an executive committee, which elect the President/CEO. Everyone is accountable to someone, ending with the shareholders - who just happen to be the fans (How's that for a concept - the fans are in charge of the team!). There are no dividends paid out, the price of a share never rises or falls, and there are safeguards put in place so any one person can't own more than a certain percentage of the team.

Great analysis. When I read Jones' comments, I thought, "Did anyone ask him about the GM?" :rolleyes1 Jones certainly has a lot of hubris working against him.

You've got to be happy with the Chiefs so far this year (yesterday notwithstanding). Some good draft picks and smart coaches seem to be starting to pay off. Crennel and Weis may not have cut it as head coaches, but they don't appear to have forgotten how to run an offense or defense.

I thought the hit on Collie should have been legal. I'm not sure how he was "defenseless" when he came down, took a step and then ducked his head and covered the ball with both hands. Neither defender left his feet or launched himself into Collie. Anyway, I do hope he's ok.

I hated the phantom "running into the kicker" and "personal foul for touching the QB's helmet" calls, too. But those have been going on for a while.

Alas, I am not. The last stock sale was in 1998, when I was just starting college. I would really have liked to bought a share, but as a college student surviving off of generic Mac & Cheese, the $200 per share price was just out of my budget.
I am on the season ticket waiting list, however. My (then) future mother in law added my name for my birthday in 1996. I get a post card every year with my new position in line. I'm currently 18,611. Average turnover per year: about 200. :sad2:

Okay, so I have a "business" (federal tax id, the whole shebang) which I'm operating whereby I take pictures of family, friends, and the things in which my family involves itself and I can get paid for those prints that people have printed. I can't call myself a professional photographer yet because I haven't been paid for anything yet - still building a portfolio. I've heard nothing from anyone who has asked me to take pictures of their families. Until this week.

See the ticker below? 3 days until I leave! I'm BUSY until then planning things out and getting things in order to leave. Now I have 2 people asking me what my sitting fees are for Christmas card pictures! BAH! I can't fit the time in for that AND the time necessary to edit and prepare the pictures for TWO shoots in three days. Esp when tonight we're doing Young Marines stuff and on Wednesday night we're dropping the animals off at their foster families for the next 3 weeks.

One of the people has offered to have his shoot moved to when I get back. Let's hope I can get the other family to agree. Either that or I do it tomorrow night. :thumbsup2

Good luck on the re-scheduling. Hope it all works out. Also congrats on finally kicking off the old revenue generation portion of the "professional" tag.

Finally AJRitz I'm hunting for Dragons in the DDFFL. Should be an interesting matchup tonight, I may be down 14 pts. but Mendenhall vs. Reed (+14) should end up close... assuming not too many FGs.

I agree with you on that point. I guess where I'm coming from though, is watch it full speed... no slow motion or frame by frame look and all you see is bodies colliding, a hard shot to the head and an unconsious body falling to the ground. Was it a legal hit... slow it down and look at it and it obviously was. But in real time, seeing it at full speed a decision has to be made, and with the crackdown the NFL is making on these helmet to helmet shots, it puts more of an emphasis for the officials to make that call. Not that it's right, but refs aren't perfect. To me, it looked like a penalty until you slowed it down and saw a frame by frame replay which is pretty much what Phil Simms said during the telecast. Refs just don't have the benefit of seeing the replay and slowing down the way we do as their critics, and from this perspective, that's what I meant when I said it was a borderline call. I will say this though... there is no way in Beverly I would want to be an official in the NFL.

I can understand that. I think a lot of times the refs are just seeing the end result of the play--and like you said, it's hard to make the call in realtime. Most guys, when you see someone lying motionless on the ground, will figure it was a vicious, dirty hit.

Howdy All,
Just checking in.

Like I said we’re all really proud of these kids and they were really smokin’ that night, but see what you think (note: the sound kicks in at about the 16 second mark)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=edFuByxgmyM

:thumbsup2 great show rob!!! i get tired just watching these kids now days!! :lmao: alot of hard work went into that. many hours in a parking lot all summer. i guy i marched with in 82 is the drum line instructor for our local hs and he was telling me how the kids have to pass a fittness test to be in marching band.:scared1: they have to run 2 miles in a forget what time frame, so many push ups, sit ups etc.... they have a male and female lifting program in the summer. our band is probley in better shape than most of the sports programs.:lmao: good job!!:thumbsup2

I see that to.... but the flag was thrown way after the hit and they could not even explain what the call was in the first place ROUGHING THE PASSER WITH OUT THE CONTROL OF THE BALL...OOOK...I think that was the finale call don't quote me on it....and I love the hand to the helmet call....I am going to throw it at Manning for standing there to long..they forgot to see some of the action when they threw Vick on the ground out of bounds or some of the holding calls.. I think they should putt some flags on and see that is the new and improve safe NFL...sorry a little ranting

We haven’t had the pleasure of Marching Disney as of yet, but (and as you might imagine) I always stop and watch when a band gets to march MK. Dave has it right. Generally the folks at Disney have the bands performing on any given day march up Main Street toward the castle. Depending on how many bands are scheduled to perform on the given day, your school could march in the morning, afternoon or evening, but almost always you’ll lead off a few minuets before one of the daily parades and will follow the same route. I think the overall bigger issue with the NFL is with all this Instant Replay peanut butter. You get two challenges, and if you're right a third, 3 minute booth reviews, end of game momemtum killers, and the time outs to teams without them for reviews. Plus, they can only review a part of the call, but not the whole thing, i.e., Steelers and Dolphins game. They need to eliminate all instant replay, or, have ALL calls subject to booth review. And, if the booth review can't decide before the snap of the next play, then the call stands. No more game stoppages for ref monologues.

Mark, loved the video. Gutsy move by that kid.

As for FFL I'm "disappointed" that Reed hit a 53 yarder to go into halftime. (Peanut Butter 5 points) I still need 8 more points from Mendenhall... could be an uphill battle for me tonight.

Very cool. :thumbsup2 I love when a town gets behind their kids and comes out to support their accomplishments. We got a similar escort last year and that was something that all the kids were talking about that Monday at school. This year, the escort was a bit smaller, because it was nearly 2am when we finally got back home, so the Police Cruiser escort was there, but the sirens had to be left off.

Keep an eye out for someone posting a video of the Nazareth performance and post it if you run across one. I’d love to get to see that.

Leaving for WDW in 6 days, cleaned the gutters and started putting the Christmas lights on the house. I loose the next 2 weekends at WDW, then Thanksgiving weekend I'm selling Goodfellow Newspapers for my Lions Club, followed with lots of busy weekends so I had to take advantage of the nice weather today here in S.E. MI plus it gets me in the Holiday Spirit since we're going to MVMCP twice while we're there, Osborne Lights, etc. Gotta go finish packing.....

Hey, Joe! You must be one of those silent lurker types... haven't seen you on here in a while. Have fun getting ready for the trip... and hope you have a great trip!

Howdy All,
Just checking in.

These past few weeks have been a blur. Thank you for all those who have commented on the new thread :thumbsup2 I was hoping to change it up a little bit but time got away from me and before I knew it we had the doors shuttered.

So... this Friday we are taking DD and some friends to Great Wolf Lodge for the first time. Got a GREAT deal on a family suit with balcony... $175 for 2 days. So far we have managed to keep it a surprise for the kids involved :goodvibes Going to try and play it off as a trip to BGW and they just roll on into GWL parking lot. Should be a lot of fun!

Otherwise... work has been extremely busy. Been trying to update my TR .. yeah, that's not going so well. Sorry , Nate! :sad1: Still need to do a bunch of car work at home (replace tie rods and CV axle on DW's car... replace tires on my car). Blah, blah, blah... honey-do list never ends... preaching to the choir here. OK... back to work I go. Hi ho!

I'm hoping to get sick in the middle of November. Here's to sickness!!

Anyone remember when I made the above stupid comment in DDC V? That was on Oct 27. I got sick the same day and still can't stop coughing.

When I get sick, I sometimes wind up with a cough that literally hangs on for months. This would be a big downer as the Dis Dads in December trip is right around the corner. Plenty of time to get better, but I have a bad feeling about this. Heading to the doc today before lunch.

I've got a camera question for you - and for anyone else that has an opinion. I have a Canon EOS XTi, and I'm looking at getting an external flash for it. I don't do any serious photo stuff - just vacation pictures, pictures of the kids, etc. Is it worth the extra $$ to get the Canon flashes (either the EX270 or the EX430) or will an off-brand work just as well?

You'll need an EX if you want to take advantage of the TTL (through the lens) metering that Canon's do automatically, but you can use other flashes as well. The on-brand flash will allow your camera to talk to the flash and set specific settings like flash power, zoom, timings, etc. Usually with an off-brand flash you need to do the work yourself. With a little practice, however, you will be able to do this in no time. You'll need to be careful with it so that you don't use a high voltage flash which can damage your camera. If you're concerned about a specific kind of flash you can usually ask a reputable dealer in your area. NOT Best Buy/Target/etc. Look for a Ritz camera or some other store that deals in SLR and dSLR cameras.

There are three factors to think about when buying a flash:

1) Guide Number (GN): Essentially how bright it can get and how well it can throw that light. It's found by multiplying the distance by the aperture at an ISO of 100 and still being able to get a perfectly exposed image. A 430EX-II has a "guide number" of 141 ft/43m at ISO 100. See that "43"? See the name "430EX-II"? There is no coincidence here.

2) Features:
Zoom: This is the ability to throw a flash over a long distance and is usually related to a lens zoom (80mm/200mm, etc). It comes into play when you're trying to use your flash to light a subject over a long distance. Motorized zoom features are nice to have.

Bounce: The ability to angle the head of the flash up to the ceiling or to a wall to get more even light distribution on a subject. Straight on (nekkid) flash usually leaves the subject looking bright and washed out. Bouncing the flash gives you something that appears to look more natural while increasing the amount of light in the image. Some flashes have a thing called a "bounce card" that allows you to bounce the flash off of the ceiling but angle some of the light forward for fill flash.

Swivel: Bounce the flash sideways.

3) Refresh time: Muy importante! This is the amount of time between shots when at full power. NIMH rechargable batteries tend to refresh faster than NICD or Alkaline.

There is a fourth thing to consider but that's only if you plan on using off-camera flash. I recommend getting one to start with before you go crazy.

If you want to save some money, you can buy used. Companies like B&H (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/used) and Adorama (http://www.adorama.com/used) have certified used departments, and some companies like KEH (http://www.keh.com/) focus on certified used equipment.

Finally, a couple quick resources. The Stobist Blog (http://strobist.blogspot.com/) and his lighting 101 (http://strobist.blogspot.com/2006/03/lighting-101.html) series of posts is a must read for anyone who is curious about using flash photography and the many of the important lessons involved in utilizing off-camera flash.

I also strongly recommend this lighting course (http://www.phototips.biz/wp3/classes/lighting-101). It's a $40 series of videos by a guy I know personally and it's a fantastic course in learning how to handle light and how and when to utilize flashes.

The wiki page on the Canon flash system (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canon_EOS_flash_system) is a great starter resource.

Anyway, there you go. If you'd like, you can also post this in the DISBoards Photography forum (http://www.disboards.com/forumdisplay.php?f=97) where a lot of people much smarter than I am can chime in as well.

Lastly, understand that some flashes control other flashes. The Canon 580EX-II, for instance, can control a 430EX-II, but not vice versa. They talk to eachother, and the camera, to create the best lit image possible. It's pretty neat in practice - my friend's videos show it with four 430EX-II flashes all controlled by a 580EX-II.

Thanks! Everything I know I learned in a $25 class. Seriously. I had been researching it for years but never been able to make the jump. After our last camera was damaged in a freak "falling on tile" incident my wife said that I could "look into" getting the camera I wanted. I read that as "go ahead and spend $600". Oops. Anyway, before I got it I wanted to read up on how to be a better photographer and I found this guy's podcasts. I watched all of them and eventually dropped the $25 for the class. My pictures with the broken camera while waiting for the new one to arrive got better. Once I got my new camera my shots started to amaze me. Now it's all about trying to take the time I need to practice.

Oh, and I got my camera in June.

The podcasts and stuff that I got (and later began doing forum maintenance for/forum moderation) can be found here (http://phototips.biz/)

I plan on editing the page to make it look all pretty but I can't do that yet. It takes a lot more time than I have available right now.

No Christmas tree, but I've got to admit... with this beautiful weather we've had the last couple of days I've been considering getting my Clark Griswold mojo on and hanging some lights outside. I can always hang them now and plug them in later. It is just too bad that there's only like an hour of daylight left when I get home now. Maybe this weekend if the weather is still decent.

Yah. I get exhausted just watching them myself. I did this stuff way back in the day, but it was nothing like what they’re fielding these days. And… it keeps the kids busy, keeps them in shape and supplies them with a “school family” (which makes surviving HS a whole lot easier)

I'm still not there yet. I just figured that I like taking pictures of people and stuff and people like what I shoot so if they want they can buy them off of me. :thumbsup2
From the looks of your posted work and that very fine dissertation on the basics of the Flash, I'd say you’ve got the skills to pull it off. And the approach of just doing what you like and letting it grow from there fits every model for success that I’ve ever run across. Keep it up.

Print out the last one. I just finished re-re-re-editing it. Apparently I'm better at editing after it's been posted. :)
Glad to know that I’m not the only one who does this. No sooner do I post something then I see where I just mangled the language. Several edits of a single post are not uncommon for me.

We do this, except it stays up until the first trash weekend in January AFTER New Year's...but then we also buy a cut tree instead of using the artificial kind.

I also take advantage of good weather & get the outside decoarted...but never turn them on until Thanksgiving night...that wat way that holiday gets its due as well. We decorated for fall (both Halloween & Thanksgiving that way) after Labor Day. Then Thanksgiving night & the day after are spent decorating for Christmas... but this year we'll be gone half the month, so no tree at home, and only 1/4 of the stuff will be put up... it'll be different, that's for sure.

Nice job Dave! But white lights?? I'm a colored-light guy, myself.

We can't bring ourselves to put up the Christmas decorations until after Thanksgiving. So it all comes out on the day after. It's more fun than fighting Black Friday crowds anyway. Then we leave it up a week or two into January. Partly because we like the lights and decorations, and partly because I'm a lazy bum.

Growing up in the '70's and So. Cal where snow was only a dream unless you drove a few hours up into the mountains, my dad was enamored with white "flocked" trees... anyone else have those when they were kids? He insisted on colored lights to off-set the white. (I'll see if I can find some pics somewhere to post. I know I have them, I'm just not sure if they've been scanned yet...that project is still slowly happening...) - anyway. My grandmother on the other hand, would have a green tree, with enormous, almost outside quality colored lights on her tree. By the time I was a teenager, my brother, mother and I all rebelled one year and bought a green, non-flocked tree... and :scared1: - put white lights on it. What a breath of fresh air that was at the time. :rotfl: Years and years of a bulky white tree, with lots of colored lights. The white lights on the green looked so elegant and simple... like you would see in some of the department stores. I've had a green tree with white lights ever since... BUT - I do enjoy colored lights outside on the house, and I line each of our windows with colored lights as well. So it's kind of a balanced mix that way. We get both colored and white lights.

* * * *

Alright - it didn't take me too long to find one... here we (my bro and I) are with my grandparents back in '76. The tree lots had the green trees up in the front, and then at the back they had rows and rows of these flocked trees. The stuff was nasty too. As the time wore on, it would flake off the tree and fall all over the carpet. And back then it was shag carpet still (my parents didn't upgrade to standard plush until '78 with their first home remodel project).

http://i292.photobucket.com/albums/mm34/stopher1_photos/Miscellaneous/197714.jpg

We would always get our tree around December 15th - and to this day, that's about when my DW and I get ours. When we lived in Michigan we actually went to a tree farm and cut it down ourselves. After my grandmother died (the one in the pic), she had had an artificial tree the last 2 or 3 years of her life and I got it. I used it a couple of years, but DW when we got married made me promise never again. She hates them. So our primary tree is always the "fresh cut" variety. We do have a small artificial one in each of the kids' rooms with their own ornaments, and I have a large artificial one that I put up at the office - but our "real" family tree in the living room must be the cut variety. And green. With little white lights.

Here's another one - this one was from '73. Check out the floor model LP stereo hi-fi system under the window (and those beads my mother had "covering" the window)... ahh the '70's. I remember they had a tv set almost as big as that hi-fi too.

http://i292.photobucket.com/albums/mm34/stopher1_photos/Miscellaneous/197327.jpg

I have a few of those ornaments and use them still - the more distinctive ones, not the plain balls... many of them were my great-grandmother's before and passed down to my mother, and then I got some when we got married. Since then our tree has become more of a "travelogue"... we collect an ornament from every place that we go (i.e. Niagara Falls, Yosemite, WDW, each resort we've stayed at at WDW, DL, Mackinac Island, etc). One of my favorites is a blown-glass kind that is a suitcase, with "stickers" all over it representing the MK, AK, Studios & Epcot. And I have one that I received as a CM when I was working at DL at the Disneyland Family Cast party. Others from all over the country are pretty cool too - they definitely flood the memories back every time we unpack them.

And each year since each child was born, we've given them an ornament for Christmas... building their own collections to take with them, so that they don't go raiding ours when they venture out on their own like I did! :rotfl2:

Here's one of our tree from last December...

Ron I'm sorry, I have absolutely no idea. Those were a couple of my parents' trees in the early to mid '70's. I remember standing there at the tree lot off to the side watching the men who worked there flock the trees with some sort of a spray gun hose attached to a compressor. Whatever it was, it went on wet, and then dried into a substance that felt kind of like popcorn that has been left out on the counter for a few days and gets kind of soft and squishy. And over the course of the two and a half weeks the trees stood in our living room, they kind of reeked by the end and they really needed to go out to the curb for the trashman.

It's official - on Tuesday Chuck Norris was elected to serve as a probate judge in District 29 of Connecticut. He beat Democratic candidate Kathryn D. DD had her last pre-season basketball clinic tonight. It's been hard for her, because she played two years ago and liked it, but missed last year entirely. When it was time for last basketball season, she was ill and we were having a hard time getting her asthma under control (we had to take her off Singulair, because of behavioral side effects). There's a big difference between 5-6 year old basketball and 7-8 year old basketball. She really missed a lot in term of learning basic basketball rules and positioning. She's been going to these small group clinics offered by the local parks & rec department twice a week for the last month or so.

Tonight, for the first time, the played a full court 4-on-4 controlled scrimmage. I was so proud to see how far she had come. She was dribbling the length of the court without losing control of the ball, making a proper jump stop when catching a pass, playing defense without fouling (she's very good at poking the ball away from the player she's guarding, but still has problems with proper defensive positioning), taking (mostly) good shots. But the two things I was proudest to see were that she had more rebounds than the the other six kids combined (despite being a grade behind the rest of the 8-year-olds in the clinic) and she showed some real toughness. Last time she played, getting hit with the ball or bumping her knee would have sent her crying to the sidelines. Tonight, she took a hard fall while hustling after a loose ball - even hitting her head on the floor - and then got clipped on the ear by another player's elbow while going for a rebound. But she didn't utter a peep about it until the clinic was over and we were on our way to the car. She was in tears on the way home, because her head and her ear and her elbow hurt. But she stuck it out until the end of the clinic. They were just bumps and bruises, but it took real maturity to understand the difference between that and an injury.

She was frustrated that her shots weren't falling, but I told her that the rebounds and defense and hustle were what mattered. The shot will come.

I think we might head up to Lawrence and catch a Lady Jayhawks game this weekend, so she can see women's basketball played at the collegiate level.

I must confess, we put up two trees as well. But all the Disney, vehicles and other assorted funky ornaments go on the main tree in the living room (along with the more traditional fair). The second one (Tam’s tree) gets set up in the dining room and is covered in “Cooking/Baking” themed ornaments (I did marry a baker and a dang good one at that).

Here's another one - this one was from '73. Check out the floor model LP stereo hi-fi system under the window (and those beads my mother had "covering" the window)... ahh the '70's. I remember they had a tv set almost as big as that hi-fi too.

I love the 70’s trees. They do bring back memories. Are any of you pups old enough to remember the 60’s trees that were covered in “ice cycles”? I’ll have to try to find a picture of one of those monstrosities when I get home this evening.

DD had her last pre-season basketball clinic tonight. It's been hard for her, because she played two years ago and liked it, but missed last year entirely……

Awesome! Sounds like she not only gained good athletic experience, but also valuable advances in the realm of life experience as well. That’s a mighty big eight-year-old you got there. I believe the chance to see a collage game is certainly in order (heck, I’d like to go).

anyone else put there christmas tree up this afternoon????:woohoo: cant wait for dw to come home from work and see her living room.:lmao::lmao:
Ours usually goes up during the first weekend in December. With us going to WDW this year at that time, I'd like to get it up sooner, but I really don't know when with all the stuff we have to do before we leave.
Growing up, we always cut down our own tree. However, it started to be more and more of a hassle, especially with the kids being so little. One year we found a very nice artificial tree on clearance after Christmas for next to nothing. With the cost of real trees climbing year after year, this thing has paid for itself several times over. I'm thinking next year the kids will be old enough to kick off a fun old fashion family Christmas by heading out into the country in the old front-wheel drive sleigh to embrace the frosty majesty of the winter landscape and select that most important of Christmas symbols.

Geuss I should take down the Fourth of July Decorations!! HEY ITS SNOWING!!!!! I love the 70’s trees. They do bring back memories. Are any of you pups old enough to remember the 60’s trees that were covered in “ice cycles”? I’ll have to try to find a picture of one of those monstrosities when I get home this evening.

I loved helping my Mom put on that icicle stuff. My dad hated it becuase it was such a pain to vacuum up.
I worked in a tree lot for a few seasons and was usually the one who flocked the tree. I was a powder with water mixed in when you used a gun to spray it on. Nasty stinky stuff. You can get it done at most good tree lots still. Had a lady get hers done every year, it was never thick enough for her. wanted it to look natural...........umm what? ITS IN YOUR HOUSE DUMMY ITS NOT GOING TO LOOK NATURAL!!! Unless you have a big hole in your roof and you didnt live in the Bay area of California!

She was dribbling the length of the court without losing control of the ball
playing defense without fouling
taking (mostly) good shots

Well it looks like she does a few things probably better than me, and I'm a frickin' gym rat from Indiana. :lmao:

She was frustrated that her shots weren't falling, but I told her that the rebounds and defense and hustle were what mattered. The shot will come.

Absolutely right. How else do you think Dennis Rodman and Ron Artest made a carreer in the NBA???? :rotfl2:

By the way, Galactic President Superstar McAwesomeville, you up for a game of laser tag later? I'll wear my best suit. :thumbsup2

Legen-wait for it-dary!:thumbsup2

My grandmother used those things. Ugh. They were terrible, IMO. I'm sure I've got some photos of at least one of her trees. I need to see if I have some of my great-aunt's aluminum trees too....

Ah-hah! Here's one from 1967 at my great-aunt's house, the year my brother was born - that's him in my my mom's arms, just one week old. Note the nice big "shiny aluminum Christmas tree"... something right out of Lucy Van Pelt's dream world there in the Charlie Brown Christmas special...

Gentlemen.....(oh wait I almost choked on that one), this may have been asked here before but 15 Disdad rooms ago...I was wondering what kind of shoes do you wear at WDW. I am a "heavier" guy and need a good shoe to be in all day long. I figured this had nothing to do with bra sizes so it would be ok.
Ok...Commence the ribbing if necessary....

I have all kinds of issues being on my feet all day, let alone walking several miles around the parks. At 255 pounds and with completely flat feet (not fallen arches - I never had any), I was really worried about footwear. I ended up wearing Crocs during the day and then, most days, changing into my Doc Martens after our afternoon break. My feet held up remarkably well.

Why yes… Yes there were… Terrible raised to the power of Beverly I’d say. But, from a stand point of letting the kids get involved with decorating the tree (without them also acquiring the opportunity to break the fragile glass ornaments) these silly things at least served a purpose. But, my word, those things sure mad for some seriously ugly trees. Of course, we were young, so what did we know about it. My brother and I were really only looking at the boxes and bags under the tree at that point in time anyway. :rolleyes1

Oh wait… I found a small image of the stuff in use. Now just imagine and entire room sized tree all decked out in your best holiday finery and then mercilessly covered in this schlock. Oy…

I wear regular tennis shoes - I think they're Asics. I get the ones in the "walking" section of the shoe store. It's rarely very hot when we're there, so I don't worry about them getting too sweaty.

But unlike bra size discussions, no pictures, please.

I'd like to know the answer too. Last time we went I was a few months recovered from surgery to repair a ruptured achilles tendon. I took a pair of Adidas flip flops and a pair of Nike velcro type sandals just because they can get wet on rides or in the rain and I'm not in wet socks all day. I don't know what the best answer is to this question, but I know that was the wrong one. I was icing my foot and my ankle at least once or twice a day to deal with the pain and swelling. I even kept looking in the gift shops for some croc flip flops to buy, but apparently if you wear size 13 or larger, Disney doesn't want your shoe buying business. I've since bought a couple of pairs of crocs flip flops and I love them, but I've never done that much walking in them to know how they'll be at the parks.

Gentelment...ppphhtt...:lmao::lmao::lmao:

Merrell's dude...hands down. By far the best "hiking" type shoe around. Not boots, but the shoe cut. I wear the Radius model, which is all leather, no running shoe type material on them. They last forever, and that includes pretty heavy use in Iraq as well (though I wore boots for heavy duty stuff).

I found that running shoes, while light and give good support for running, "give" a little too much (if you know what I mean) when walking and standing around the theme parks (which subsequently makes your feet hurt).

The hiking shoes have a little harder rubber which, in turn, provides a better support base, which in turn makes your feet comfy...

Just My humble opinion!

Oh yeah!

I found this one of one of my grandmother's trees, from '78. Not as many of the individual glops of tinsel as I thought I'd remembered... BUT... it also has the tinsel garlands! BOTH on the same tree. Ugh. To each his/her own of course... but ugh. I remember helping her some years, and she was adamant that you take just one at a time... me, I would just take a hand full and glop it on "so you could see it better", but she would graciously scold me saying that it would "sparkle and shimmer better" if you did it one at a time! Ha, looking back I also think it would clog up the vacuum more if it were glopped on by the handful!

I don't get the crocs at the park thing. I have a pair for the pool, beach, lake and goofing off around the house, I like them for that, but I would think they would be incredibly uncomfortable for using at the parks.

Maybe it's the pair I have, but again, I think they would "give" way too much and mine don't offer much, if any kind of arch support....

They are great for just schlepping around though.

All these tinsel pictures are giving me nightmares! I remember my mom having us picking up each strand individually for re-packaging when the tree came down. The horror!:scared1:

I had an interesting dilemma when I got married. I was a colored-light guy and my wife was a white-light gal. This was an issue that required pre-marital counseling. :lmao: She thought white lights were "classic". I said they were "boring", and everybody else had white lights, so there was a same-ness going on. In the end, we agreed on colored lights on the tree and white lights outside. Although I got some colored lights on a tree outside last year, so maybe I'm rubbing off on her. :thumbsup2

And I just wear my sneakers in the parks. But I don't have major foot issues, either. :confused3
