Stopped by the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Quantico, VA on my way back home from DC. I recommend the museum, it's very well done.
One of the exhibits has a very interesting effect when photographed. In the WWII gallery, in the section on the Marine's efforts at Iwo Jima is a wall with a Marine Corps or Navy emblem for every person lost on Iwo Jima. The scope of it is striking:

If you take a flash photo of it, you get an added surprise, a hidden, color image of the mountain along with landing craft and Marines:

If you cant make it to visit, you can always visit http://virtualusmcmuseum.com for a surprisingly complete overview of the museum.

Wow! that's awesome. Did you know about that when you took the picture or did you find out about it when you looked at the picture after?

A docent pointed it out as I was taking photos of the Iwo Jima flag they have on display there.

Being a former Marine (my family says there is no former in me :rotfl2:), I have been there on several occasions. IMHO, and I admit to being biased, it is one of the finest museums I have ever visited. I have many pics from the museum. If you get the opportunity, have lunch in Tun Tavern. The bartender gives a presentation about the mural on the wall. He did all the research and received permission to give the presentation.
Semper FI!

I agree. Growing up near DC, I went to a lot of museums as a kid. I also love taking my 9 year old to science museums in particular now. In the past 2 years we've visited 7 planetariums. This is one of the best planned and executed museums I've seen.
Visitors are taken chronologically through the Marine Corps' history but immerses you in the experience in many places. The display in a cold mountainous area in the middle of a loud battle is in a closed darkened room which is also air conditioned to a temp lower than the rest of the museum. The display showing Marines exiting a chinook helicopter into a jungle is heated to simulate the experience a bit more. Visitors enter the exhibit by exiting down the ramp of the rear of a real helicopter. The whole museum starts out with a bus with video screens in the windows showing what its like for new recruits to arrive at basic training.
Share some of your photos here sometime.

Here's just a few of the many. Some are okay pictures, but they are personally important.

A different perspective; the attention to detail was impressive, to wit: the empty .50 cal. cartridges and belt links.
