My family and I are thinking about taking our first Disney Cruise in 2013. Since so many people on here have been on several DCL cruises and are experts, maybe you can help. :goodvibes

Assuming the whole family goes like our 2009 cruise, we will have two kids (5 and 9) and four teenagers (14-17) in our group. The rest of us are adults. Our group will have 15 people in it, maybe more if friends and in-laws/extended family come along. Maybe less if people decide not to go.

Which itinerary is best?
We are looking at Bahamas and Caribbean cruises. We can't do Europe because the airfare will kill us, and most of our group has already done Alaska. But there are two Caribbean ones, and the Bahamas cruises vary in length. Atlantis would be fun, but Caribbean cruises are longer, so that might be nicer.

Which excursions do you recommend?
I know about Atlantis for Bahamian cruise, but what is there to do on the Caribbean cruises? I just know it's beautiful but I don't know much about it.

What is the best time of year to go?
The kids can't miss school, so we have Summer, Christmas, New Year, Easter, Thanksgiving, or Presidents' week as our options.

Staterooms?
Are there family rooms? I think I saw the Disney Dream has some Oceanview rooms that can accomodate up to five guests. That will be nice for slumber parties, since there were issues with the kids wanting to be together on our last cruise. Do you recommend regular oceanview or balcony?

What is the best way to get a good deal?
Booking online? Dreams Unlimited? By phone? Other travel agency?

I know it's early, but the 2012 cruises open tomorrow, and we want to learn as much as we can between now and a year from now when it's time to book our cruise. :flower3:

Does this site send out emails every year telling when DCL will start accepting bookings? I don't want to miss out on opening day for 2013, as I heard the first day has the best deals. ;)

A lot of your questions can be answered in some of the threads that are in the first couple of pages, you'll just have to read thru them. You can also read the FAQ sticky at the top of the boards.

You asked about emails being sent out for bookings, if you are asking does the DIS sent out emails then no. Some TA's sent out emails to their email lists and some past cruisers rec'd an email from DCL announcing the bookings. I was one of the unlucky ones that didn't receive an email from them.

We have only done 1 DCL cruise, but have done 2 other cruiselines. We did the 7 day Carribean on the Magic last summer. Loved the 7 day cruise. 3 and 4 day don't seem long enough for us, especially since we fly across the country for the cruise. We did the Eastern and are booked for another Eastern in 2012. The Western port do not appeal to us and we love the extra sea day.

We did not do any excursions on our Eastern Carribean cruise. We did beaches by ourselves. When we did Nassau, 10 years ago, we did take a city tour that was neat, except for when the driver took us thru a sketchy part of the island. As for the Eastern Carribean, we wanted to spend time at a beach so we took the local taxi to Meghan's Bay in St. Thomas and spent all of our time in the water.

We went the week before Labor Day. DD didn't miss much school, just 1st 2 days that were 1/2 days anyway. The price was better too.

Can't answer your question about family rooms, but we love having a balcony when we are in the Carribean. If we were going to Alaska I would say Oceanview, but we love sitting out on the verandah during the day and in the evening. DD loved the quiet of our own balcony too.

I would shop around. Some people book with DCL then transfer to a travel agency for more OBC, but you should do what works best for you.

I received an monthy email for the DIS board, but just part of their regular monthly update. I have worked with a Disney specialist travel agency and on their email list and they sent me an email lettting me know that the 2012 bookings were coming up. Also, keep checking on the DIS, this site is full of people who are on top of it :)

Good luck with what you decide. Have a great time!
