I am getting my dh's old camera it is the canon rebel that I believe was the first one, he now has a new one. I am a point and shoot kinda gal who wants to maybe learn more but doesn't want to feel overwhelmed all at once. Anyways, I was wondering if there were any basic tips you can share or anything you feel that is important for a beginner to know. I hope I am posting this in the right section.

To me the best place to start learning is with how an exposure is made. Once you understand how shutter speed, ISO, and aperture work with the light to make the exposure then you will have a pretty good idea of what to do with all those different modes on your camera.

To add to photo chick, I would recommend getting a copy of Bryan Peterson's "Understanding Exposure". Its an easy read of about 160 pages of big print and lots of pictures. I found it very helpful to understand the triangle of 'shutter speed, ISO and aperture'.
