I want to be sure that everyone is okay with the requirements for this swap. We have new swappers who may not have read through the stickies that discuss how to make the elements and I can always use a refresher myself.
The photo mats must have at least two layers. A minimum of 6-1/4 x 4-1/4 and a shadow of 6-1/2 x 4-1/2. You can add larger layers underneath if you are adding a border or embellishments that hang over. You embellishments must not interfere with the placement of a 6x4 photo. This means you can pop-dot to lift up the embellishment or adhere your ribbon/fiber to the back of the mat. Please test fit your mats to make sure they work okay. This does mean that rub-ons generally don't work well on mats. You may include those to be added on after the photo is down if you wish. I don't have frames as an element because most dies make them so small that you have to cut your photo. I don't want to make some one have to cut a photo to use an element.
The journal boxes will have a minimum of THREE layers. The layer you write on must be at least 3x3. You can start with a larger writing surface if you wish. It can be a solid or lined layer. It works best if this layer is not textured. Then you will have TWO more layers under that. Be sure your layers work with your embellishments. You don't want to cover too much of the writing surface. If your embellishment might do so, start with a larger writing surface.
If you pick the tag element - it must be no smaller than 2x3. I like mine larger, but that is because I love to use up paper. I never reuse the scraps I keep. This should have two layers, an eyelet or brad or fiber/ribbon in the hole. You can also do the stapled on ribbon/fiber over where the hole would be. It also needs to be embellished in addition to the mentioned fiber/ribbon. A pretty brad in the hole doesn't count even if it is nice.
The letter should be cut on the Cricut at 4". Or you can use a punch if it is at least 4" and comes with a shadow. When cutting on the Cricut, it may not come out exactly 4". I have no idea why this is so with some fonts. Even with the shadow it may a bit smaller and that is okay. Your letter should have two layers - top and shadow. If your font doesn't come with a shadow than please use a shape or something else to layer it with. But remember, that doesn't count towards the embellishment unless that shape has at least two layers. The embellishing of letter is not going to be strict nor need to be elaborate. It can be simple - like embossing the top layer, using fancy glitter/glossy/embossed paper, or distressing the layer. You can add Jolee type stickers, Primas, Brads, gemstone/bling, die cuts or icons.
So there are no hard feelings later, I want you all to know that part of my job as hostess is to make sure the basics are met. I don't judge style or techniques. I tend to like those I can't do. I just make sure the basics are met. If they are not, I will be sure to let you know and you can either remake them and send them to me if there is time or on to the swappers in group. It is very rare that such needs to happen. I think so far I have had one person not make enough and they just made the extra elements and I popped them in the baggies and one person did use embellishments that I could not lift up to slide photos under.
If you have questions, you can PM or email or post photos here. Everyone is generous with their praise and they give good advice.
Happy swap making!!

For all of us to take three letters, I would need to drop one swapper. I just can't do that yet. It would have to be a last resort.
If you take two more letters, then you would get two complete groups. If you take one letter, I could take the other; but how do we divide that up? Every other letter or first thirteen?

Okay so I'm trying to figure out how much paper I will need for each letter...
if I get pattern paper to use for the letter and one layer each for the photo mat and journal box (the other layers I would use plain color's)?
do you think 10 pages would be enough? its been so long since I swapped, want to make sure I have enough!!
thanks for your help!

Wow guys!! You went crazy since this morning!!!! LOL OK...question first...my D for Dumbo is really for the ride...so should that be group C? Then, if you did not give that B for Balloons to Cheryl, can I have that? Next question, do you want me to change my W for Wishes to something else since we have fireworks? I can come up with something else. It's not a problem. For Characters, I can take I for Incredibles.
So...that would give me:
Group B (Character / Verb) -
I - Incredibles
Group C (Places / Things) -
B - Balloons
Then Dumbo would be either group B or C and Wishes may or may not be dropped. I guess I need to know what you think before possibly picking something else.

LOL it's hard to really plan it, right? I find that I can get 3 mat layers out of a 12x12 sheet, about 4-6 letters out of a 12x12 sheet (depending on the font and which letter) and about 6-9 journal box layers out of a 12x12 sheet. So, for each letter you are looking 10 or 11 to be safe. You will probably end up with extra though. Don't forget you have the extra element to do also!! :thumbsup2

You would get back only half a set of letters if you only did one.
You don't have to be in both groups, it's okay. It is getting harder to pick things.

Ummmm....quick question...I'm sorry to be a pain. :sad2: I am not super sure about either of my choices for group B (Incredibles and Queen of Hearts). If it would not be a big issue, could I switch? I am so sorry...I know this has been crazy on here (please don't throw rocks at me!!) I think I just picked something to pick it and I was running in and out, so I missed a lot of the in between stuff. Anyway, after more rational thought, I would like to know if I could do U - Ursula and O - Out of this world. I know the O isn't really a verb...maybe an adjective phrase...but thought it could be used fairly widely..Tomorrowland anything, Mission:Space, Buzz pix, you get the idea. Anyway, if you would rather me just stay, I can...just thought I'd see. Even if you want to only switch one of mine, that's fine too and either will be good. Ok. Long post over!
*OK...I thought it over a bit more...can I keep Queen of Hearts and change Incredibles to Ursula? Please and thank you! I promise this is the end of my mind-changing!!! LOL

I agree with the crappy selection of Disney papers at Mikes anymore. Even there regular paper they now have are pricey and random in there theme'ing.IDK if you have Jo-ann's ETC in your neck of the woods but ours here in AZ got a ton of new Disney paper now even Bambi and dumbo!!!

Hey peeps sooooo I was going through my sketches for my Frontierland ideas and check this out for the letter "F" In an Old west Font style and going from bottom to top
Dark Brown Cardstock Mat
Kraft Color Cardstock Second Mat (think paper lunch bag) paper (distressed) I'm gonna crumple the paper and use Tim Holtz brown Ink lightly smeared on it. so it looks old west beat up. And the letter paper is Red Bandanna and or cowboy paper.
God I hope that makes sense to everyone.....

Okay, I think I am updated to here.
I like the idea of Queue for the Q in places & things. If you have the Mickey or Pooh or even Princess carts - cut their full body shapes on blackout at about a 1-1/2 and line them up on the bottom of your mat, box and element. Using a lined pattern paper for the Q and we get a cut play on the word. :thumbsup2

For all of you posting that you have a Joann's with lots of Disney papers....would someone be willing to pick some up for me and I'll pay for it and the shipping? Out of this World - with a space theme was a really cool idea. I have paper if you want it for this one. Oh boy - would also work I think.
Y is a little bit harder. I think we can all agree to stretch the limits for this one.

I knew, knew, knew I should have gotten a sign-up buddy. I will definitely be scraplifting a bunch from group A... and B... and C. Making 3 ABC books for my nieces and nephew. We leave for their first trip in 24 days, 23 hours, 14 minutes and 27 second (nope, I'm not excited at all)
I look forward to seeing everyone's great work!
I still can't believe this swap filled up in 24 hours. It's crazy.
If we have more people who want to play, I would be willing to open up another group. I think the general color one would be the most useful and easiest to complete.

Wow, things got crazy overnight. AWM - if you wanna smack me for suggesting the change I'm ok with that. My DH says I need to keep my bright ideas to myself.
For all of you posting that you have a Joann's with lots of Disney papers....would someone be willing to pick some up for me and I'll pay for it and the shipping? I only have Michaels and AC Moore and the selection at both is really crappy eventhough they are fairly new stores. We do have a Joanns, but it is a really tiny store and they only carry the 81/2X11 papers. Go figure!
:rotfl2: It was a fun frenzy last night. I am not usually so fluid. I think we did really well with change on the fly like that. :thumbsup2
The Disney papers are $0.99 to $1.99 each sheet. What kind do you think you want and how many? I need to go and look at stuff anyway, so I can certainly grab you some too.

Lets see.....I have my papers for group A. I found them two weeks ago at a tiny little scrapbook place we happened to run across. They were a steal! So, I guess what I'm looking for is just some new papers for my personal stash. I get tired of using the same ones over and over. Nothing too specific - like I don't think I would use paper with Bambi on it. Anything general disney, Mickey or the fab 5, or such would be great. How about 3 pages of each for whatever you find?
Maybe we should have a paper swap for those of us who live in a scrapbook-challenged area?

Joanns had more disney paper, not alot of the typical black/red/white/yellow, so I had to get something with black/white that will work...
had problems figuring out what to do for my Lion King and Monster's sets, think I figured it out, but had to change up some stuff...

Yes. In some way. But it can be simple. Like embossed, or inked, or special paper. Or you can go more elaborate with an icon or Prima and jewel or a Jolee type sticker. It does need two layers - top and shadow.
Because we also making elements with the letters, these don't have to be as standout as the swaps where it is the only element.
If it is obvious what the letter stands for in conjunction with elements, and they all flow together, I think we are good.
Feel free to ask specific questions as you go.

Hey All,
I want to be sure that everyone is okay with the requirements for this swap.
:teeth: I never reuse the scraps I keep. :rotfl2: This should have two layers, an eyelet or brad or fiber/ribbon in the hole. You can also do the stapled on ribbon/fiber over where the hole would be. It also needs to be embellished in addition to the mentioned fiber/ribbon. A pretty brad in the hole doesn't count even if it is nice. :sad1:
The letter should be cut on the Cricut at 4". Or you can use a punch if it is at least 4" and comes with a shadow. When cutting on the Cricut, it may not come out exactly 4". :confused3 I have no idea why this is so with some fonts.
:) I just make sure the basics are met.
:cloud9:

Okay, a dumb question here. In group A, it is supposed to be colored in red, black, white, etc. and Disney-ish paper. So my question is this...
For M, can it be the Mickey/Minnie colors and include embellishments/paper that are actually Mickey/Minnie, or would they need to be generalized so that each swapper can use it on any kind of page?
Oh, one more question.
For T, do I still need to use red/black/white/etc. or can it be Toy Story themed colors, or Tigger colors or something like that?
That's all for now. I just don't want to do this wrong. It's been almost a year since my last swap. (Why does that sound like an AA meeting?:scared1:)
AlexWyattMommy
09-11-2010, 02:20 PM
If you can make the black. red, yellow or white work for your solid colors with the Tigger or toy story paper, then yes. Go for it. I would however refrain from using embellishments that will limit your use of photos. Like I personally only have one photo of Tigger taken about 4 years ago. But there was a day where most of us had on orange so I could use those photos with the Tigger colors as long Tigger wasn't the only embellishment. Like if you used fabric ribbon or thin pieces of the paper as ribbon or primas or brads etc, as the embellishments then we aren't limited to just using Tigger photos. If go with Toy Story and use more than just one character as the embellishment that would work too. Because then it could be used for character or ride photos.
I guess the main idea is for each letter to be able to as versatile as possible.
Fab 5 seem to be easier to work with because so many of the photos will have something with them in it or in the background.
The idea is that the main colors be uniform enough to use together with variety of different photos.
Does that help or make it more confusing?
Ohana 4
09-11-2010, 04:37 PM
Sounds good. I guess I just didn't know if the letters themselves needed to have a "theme." But I think now I get it. It should be main Disney colors, but not necessarily with a theme, correct? So I could just do my T in "mickey-type" colors if I wanted to, right?

The green strip of paper on the photo mat is only adhered on the back; you can slide a picture under it with not trouble.
The smaller star on the embelished shape is silver-- it just sparkles so it turned out gold in the picture.
What do you guys think?

Went out looking for paper for this swap today and got rather discouraged. I might be over thinking this a bit. Does the red, black, yellow and white for group A have to specifically be Disney paper or can it be any paper within that color scheme. Like, can it just be red and white polka dots matted in white for the letter? Does that make sense? I'm sure the instructions are clear as day but I'm having a tough time getting my thoughts together.

Well, red and white polka dots screams Minnie to me and she is certainly Disney.
You don't have to use all the solid colors. :) You can pick and choose.
The pattern paper, if you want to use it [because you can just solid or textured cardstock if you want] does not have to say Disney on it. I've seen lots of Creative Imagination stuff that isn't sanctioned by Disney. And yes, you can use polka dot or striped or checkered paper if it is the right colors. :)
Does that help?
Oh, and if you are using "Disneyfied" paper, it itself can be different colors if you use the specified colors as well with it.
ie- the blue, green, orange white paper that looks like it would be great with a character meal from Creative Imagination. Using black and white card stock would keep that paper in the same family even though it isn't the "right" colors.

ie- the blue, green, orange white paper that looks like it would be great with a character meal from Creative Imagination. Using black and white card stock would keep that paper in the same family even though it isn't the "right" colors.
AWM--I hate to be the voice of dissent, but, I signed up for the general swap because I am making an ABC book using ONLY red, yellow, black & white. I would rather we stay with those colors. If you want me to I'll drop out today and someone else can have my spot, that's fine. I just would be very unhappy if there were lots of colors in my book. I'm even printing my pictures in black & white.
Let me know what you want me to do.
Thanks, Cheryl :goodvibes
On a related note for those of you having trouble finding red, yellow, black & white patterned paper I have been able to find it at Archiver's, JoAnn's, and online at scrapyourtripdotcom.

Here's my prototype for my One Man's Dream set:
http://i894.photobucket.com/albums/ac141/wdwmickey/100_2896.jpg
The O has a ring of embossed pixie dust, which is inked/chalked. The photo mat has a white rhinestone Mickey head where the two sections of ribbon cross (and, yes, you can get a pic under and on to the mat). Mickey's hat is inked/chalked so it's darker than his face.
I went with blue, black, and white for my color scheme for a few reasons. The floor of OMD looks like the shiny blue paper and my ribbon, and the walls are blue. Mickey's supposed to be Steamboat Willie.
What do you think? Is this okay?

I will let majority rule on this.
I will send PMs in the morning to the swappers and see if using only those colors will affect others plans.

I really don't mind dropping out of the general colors. It's not that big of a deal--I can use all of the mats I made and I only made 1 "O" so far. I don't want to cause drama. I'd be more than happy to let someone else have my spot ;)

I love these! And you did a great job with the embossed pixie dust -- I bought it at Big Lots and was trying to figure out a good way to use it.

Ann--after thinking on this and praying about it. I would like to drop out of the general colors swap. I don't want you to have to send 13 PMs and I don't want 13 people to have to change their plans based on what I thought I read in the directions. I don't want anyone on this board to think I am "high maintenance" or a "drama queen" (I'm really not either, I promise :flower3:)
So if it's okay with you please take my name off group A, but, keep me on groups B & C.
Thanks, Cheryl :goodvibes
PS--sorry for any trouble I may have caused

I have taken you out of Group A.
I really do think that using the selected colors only for the solid layers will make it uniform enough that a few letters that may have a different color in a pattern paper won't be glaringly odd. It would all still flow nicely once letters and journaling are added.
Since I had already given the go ahead to use a different color pattern paper with the selected color solid paper, I don't know that I can say don't use it anymore.
Thank you for understanding. And I do understand why you are dropping this group. There are no hard feelings.

I did send a PM to icesk8abc, as she expressed disappointment also at missing the sign ups.
I will let her have first refusal. If she doesn't want it, the spots are SIOH. :thumbsup2
Thanks for looking out for SIOH.

Thanks Ann :) Also, if anyone could please look at MusicalDisneyDreams "O" elements, post 217 and give her some feedback that would be awesome. She would like to work on it after school if the prototype is okay ;)

You took the words right out of my mouth! I feel like a slacker too! I just went to Michaels to get some supplies for this swap. $50 later, I am digging into my creative soul to come up with something worthy of what I have seen from you ladies so far! I'm determined to meet this challenge in the next three days I have off.

Don't feel like slackers!!:flower3: We went shopping on Saturday and Rachel was so excited to get started that she went to work as soon as we put our supplies away :) We usually work on swap stuff together so I can assist if she gets stuck. So she's working diligently on this swap, but, she has yet to start the dining swap :rotfl2:

Ok, I've cut my T and the shadow, but I don't know what to add to it for embellishment. It's red and black, so none of the inks I have would show up well. I thought about hanging something off the top cross of the T, but all I can think of is a Mickey-yellow star or maybe a Mickey head? I'd love to do a paper piecing of Mickey leaning against the T, but there's no way I can make it that small with all the little pieces. Unless I just do a silhouette of him?:upsidedow
Any ideas?
AlexWyattMommy

I would do the silhouette myself. Or a red prima with the black Mickey head gemstone in the middle.

you then need to upload them to a host site, like photobucket or shutterfly
then that site will give you an address to post here that will link back to the photo
PrincessNancy96
09-13-2010, 03:19 PM
utilize photobucket.. it is very easy to upload your photos from your computer and than onto here...
you will see an IMG link under your photo on photobucket.. you highlight and copy that and then paste it into your posting here on the boards....

okay, does this work??????
yes it does, sorry if they are big..
so for my R's used minnie pokadots with black and yellow. photo mat, ribbon not attached on front, the circle is the journal box, chalked the white circle, made 3 yellow flowers w/red sparkle in the middle.
for my J's used a black/white stripe w/red ribbon accents, journal box has red eyelets in each corner and made mickey tag w/ribbon and star accents, photo mat has same ribbon and stars.
do these look okay, do they need anything else?
TIA for your input

You can go into Edit in photobucket and make them smaller.... and than just use the img link again... Great work!!!!

okay, I'm second guessing my photo mat for the "J", is it okay having the stars on the left side of the ribbon? the ribbon is not attached on the front, will the stars get in the way of your photos?
need your input TIA!!
Ohana 4
09-13-2010, 04:09 PM
It won't get in the way of my pictures. Most of the time, there is some amount of room on a picture to cut off to make it fit on the mat.
Most people probably don't have a photo that is crucial to see from edge to edge... ;)
Just sayin.
