Thanks Serena and everybody for waiting with me! She had little crampings all day on Friday and we even went to the local, high school football game. We got into the van to come home and I asked her if the pains had stopped all the way. She said, "no" and immediately had a major pain. She then had 5 pains in 15 minutes. Within 90 minutes, we were on our way to the hospital. During the 30 minute trip, her contractions were 2-3 minutes apart (yikes!).
She was only dilated to 4 and her water was intact. Her birthing coach was fantastic and she was born about 16 hours from the first, significant pain. I won't go into the details here on the DIS but the last "phase" happened in minutes instead of the usual hour or so. Her poor OB doc was in an emergency surgery. The baby wasn't compressed very long in the canal, so her head is quite perfectly shaped.
The most amazing thing to me was the baby's first reactions. She cried on her own and the Doc put her on DD's tummy. As DD was trying to speak/cry/rejoice/understand, the baby stopped criying and turned toward her voice. That happened 3 times! The Doc eventually joked with my DD that crying was a good thing and to please not speak for a minute. We all cracked up and all was well.
DD has a great way with the baby. Had the first successful feeding tonight (and the baby's first full tummy and big burp, too). She will be coming home tomorrow and wanted to be on her own tonight. The staff is so incredibly excellent that I agreed.
Today was a big day, with kids from church & school stopping by. I (of course) took charge a couple of times and provided crowd control.
On a sad note, one of DD's friends drowned today. He was a kid that had taken the wrong path in life and his Mom sent him away to a special school. He returned a new person and had successfully changed his life. We had made an effort for years to pick him up for church but he was not consistent. It was a tragic accident caused by not respecting the strong undercurrents.
Well, I am off to bed for a bit of sleep before I bring them home tomorrow. Thanks again, everybody!
