The only hotel I've used in LA is The Standard on Sunset in West Hollywood, but the Standard Downtown is only about a mile from the Staples Center.

down the street from staples is Kyoto grand. I would avoid this hotel. overpriced and the rooms are very very very outdated.

Just a tip, outside of your event, if you want to do things in LA, downtown isn't the place to stay.

The Marriot is next door to the Staple Center. The Bonaventure is a nice hotel and the rooms have been going through extensive rennovation.

The Standard downtown is nice and trendy, awesome rooftop, but be warned: the "walls" that separate the bathroom from the main room are made of glass with no curtains and the beds are literally a few inches off the floor.
