Hello everyone!
For those new to us, we are a group of people who are planning to participate in walking/running events throughout the year. For most of us, the ultimate goal is to train and compete in the annual WDW Half/Full marathons. We'll also be posting news and training for various other events throughout the year. We range from beginners to triathletes. Come join us, whether you're training for an event or walking/running for fitness.
New WISH Team members. If you read one thing over and over, believe this. Being part of this team is fantastic. Part of the ride you get for the event is what I call the roller coaster. There will be lots of ups and downs. The more you post here, the more you will find yourself enjoying the ride. It is an incredible journey. Don't be afraid, shy or whatever to come here and just post up anything. You don't have to know us right away, or all of us at all. You will get to know some of us. It makes the event you are enjoying have MORE meaning and we love to have you.
:)

I'm in! I embraced the run with walking a few weeks ago....my goal had been to run the whole Princess 1/2 but as I keep training....I'm realistic this is not a realistic goal LOL. So I began to listen to any voices that stated that taking occ walk breaks allows your body to recover esp if you are not an avid athlete and can increase your overall time....so I'm in, and will be at the Princess 1/2 2011

Hi! I'm going to jump in! I've been lurking around here for quite a while and need to increase my accountability!
My ultimate goal - the thing that got me off of the sofa - was the desire to participate in the Princess Half in 2011. I am registered and ready to go! Now I just have to work on training! I scheduled another half Marathon locally (the Myrtle Beach Mini Marathon) in October so I could do a 'test run' before February, but I just can not WAIT until February!
So far, I'm still slow. I am not much of a runner so I'm doing 80-90% walking. I'm slowly adding more intervals, but it's obvious that I'm much happier/healthier as a walker right now. I'm barely making the 16 min/mi requirement, but I'm hoping once it starts to cool down I'll speed up a little bit. I did my longest distance yesterday at 10.1 miles. I was proud of myself for going so far!
I'm going to keep reading here to get information and inspiration! I'm also loving the idea of being part of a team, especially since everything I have coming up is a solo venture. It would be great to see some familiar faces!

Hey Kids!
I have not been on this thread for a while. Spending most of my post times with the Warriors, but I feel the need to "branch out" a bit more.......
I'm really big on the run/walk strategy also. That's Jim Galloway's method, & in the Florida heat, unless you are an elite runner, it's (IMHO) a sensible, safe way to proceed. Additionally, I take fluids with me, & when they are gone, it's time to head home.
I usually run 5/walk 1 during the heat. Depending on conditions, I may raise or lower that some. That's the interval I would LOVE to do for an entire full (but not there yet). For a 1/2, I try 7/1 or 8/1. We'll see how well that works in California next month. Only problem is that I have not done more than 8 miles at a time all summer due to the heat. :scared1::scared1::scared1::scared1: Hopefully the weather is better for running out there in September than it is here.

I agree with JimB on the run/walk and I think it will build confidence for you (you being MeredithRX and NCrunner) The hills of Asheville and the heat of the beach make for a tough run. The Princess is so much fun and with so much entertainment you forget about the race.
AFM, I will be up at o'dark o'clock for my LR in the morning. Just seems easier without the sun beating down and I get to try out my new handheld water bottle.

Hi everyone.
I've been MIA for awhile. Time to get back on track. Did a 5k yesterday in just under 43 minutes. I alternated walking and wogging every 1/4 mile. It was my longest stint since the Indy 1/2 in May. What a slug I've been.
I'm planning on registering for the Goofy. Been holding out making that payment and keeping an eye on how close to being full it is.
I hope to get back to making more frequent posts. Hope everyone's training is going well.

Welcoem to WISh team! Your speed will come with thime. Pleanty of time be fore February. I LOVE hearing about people doing their longest ever distances. Going ot be a very long itme, if ever ebfore I cross another thresholdlike that, so I livve vicariously through others.
Galloway is very good. My favorited is John Bingham's Marathonign for Mortals. SOunds liek both of you may have a plan, but if you don't/ And, yes, speed will come back as temps go down.
Hi Jim, Joan and Terri!
I'm resting after the big race. Did do yoga Tuesday and will go to swim class tonight. We'll see how it goes to move again. Porbably won't ge ta run in until Monday afternoon, though.

Happy Thursday!!!
I decided to give the legs a rest this morning & did 28 miles of biking instead of running. Easier on the back, too. Probably going to try some weights & core this afternoon. Wow, the DL 1/2 is just around the corner!! Time flies!!
AAAAAAAAGH!!!!!!!! Not. Ready. Yet.

NCRunner Good luck with your run/walk plan. You probably already know, but you have lots of company with that here on the WISH boards.
Meredith Congrats on going 10 miles! That is quite a long distance, and already puts you in great shape for making it through the half.
Jim 28 bike miles? Not much of a "rest"! And yes, I can't believe that in 28 days I'll be leaving for DL!
Carrie Are you still on a high from your race? Hope so--after all that work!
AFM... same old, same old. This weekend I am doing a "metric century (62 mile)" bike ride with DH followed on Sunday by 20 mile LR. If I make it through I expect to be a zombie Sunday pm!

Not to jinx it, but the past 2 years, the weather has been awesome. Coastal fog from pre race start until about 8:30-9:00. CA has been really cool this summer, especially the past couple of weeks. Cross our fingers it stays that way!!1:goodvibes

Meredith - Great work on the distance. You will be so ready come February! Easy peasy!
NCRunner - run/walk is where it's at! I mix it up. Flat runs are run/run. Hills are 3/1 and long runs are fairly flat and 5/1. At least that's what I do now. When it gets cooler I may test some longer ones again. I used 10/3 in the Disney half this year. That was too much for me then.
I've had a great week so far. I'm again biking to work some. Got away from it last winter leading up to the Disney half. I'd ridden a couple times in July, but this week got back in the saddle Monday and Wednesday. Tuesday and Thursday were run mornings. I'll bike again tomorrow. It's just a few miles, but I love it. The heat has let up the last couple of days and the difference is wonderful.
I'm on the Galloway just finish plan for January. This weekend is 7.5 miles. I'll probably round up to 8.
Maura - that should make for good sleep Sunday night!

So do you see a lot of that in the actual race? The run/walk thing? I guess I pictured runners...and have been hard on myself when I break to walk. I'm hearing its actually good and can decrease your overall time if you do it right?

Absolutely! There will be many, many run/walkers, and many who are doing 100% walk. There is nothing wrong with taking walk breaks, and you most definitely can decrease your time if you do it right.
I'm actually a member of a Galloway running group here in Raleigh (4th year), so I'm a firm believer in the run/walk method.
Meredith - 10 miles is a BIG deal. That first double digit distance is such a huge accomplishment. The speed will come, especially as it gets cooler. This summer is miserable! We're doing the Myrtle Beach Half in February, but can't fit the October one into our schedule. (Were supposed to do the half this past year, but were "lucky" enough to be part of the first ever snowed-out Myrtle Beach Marathon!)
Joan - How'd you like the new water bottle?
Terri - Funny, I don't think I've done any real distance since Indy either! Mostly because of injury, but as I read your post I realized that I hadn't run really long since then...
Carrie - How's the recovery coming along? You did great!
Maura - Reading about your weekend makes me tired. I'm counting your miles, since I still can't run!
Ronda - Jeff Galloway has started doing his marathons at a :30R/:30W. He swears it's faster. I still think it sounds crazy, but he's really, really pushing the shorter intervals.
Lexxie&Nicky - Starting at 37 isn't crazy at all. I was 43, and I started with a 5K. I did my first half at 45, so you're way ahead of me! Just be forewarned - it's addictive! And if you get teary thinking about it, you'll probably need tissues when you run down Main Street!
I have my MRI Monday, so I hope to know sometime next week what's wrong with my hip and if and when I get to run again, and if I'll actually get to run Marine Corps. The friend I signed up with is about to go crazy waiting to hear if I'm going to have to sell my entry, since we agreed to do this one together. Keep your fingers crossed!

I hope that MRI answers your questions - not knowing must be hard. I am sure I will totally cry on Mainstreet and at the finish line - providing I make it to the finish line. :)
NCRunner - I need to wait to register for financial reasons :( for the princess, I hate it when everything is due/needed at the same time. I am going to keep at the training though in the meantime and cannot wait to register.

Jackie Hope that MRI gets you some answers and I hope it is all good news. Loved the amphipod lite hand held (12 oz bottle) and put my sports beans in the little pouch-actually took them out of the packaging.
Got yall beat on age-started 2008 and did the Minnie 15K..I'll be 49 (sshh) on Tuesday. I did my first half last year--the princess and again this year and signed up today to do it again next year.

run/walk in races? Goodness, yes. Lots and lots of people using it. I am an adult onset endurance athlete (props to John Bingham). I am slow. Spending that much time on the course I need to use the run/walk to clear the lactic acid from my muscles. With proper fueling one can go for a very, very long time.
I did the eight this morning. Wow! Felt great and averaged 12:01. It was warm, 75* at the beginning. I must be getting used to the warmer temps. It felt, well, uh, easy?
Hope everyone is having a great training weekend!

It seems as if everyone is having a pretty productive week! As for me, I was a good girl and got my scheduled training in. I got up this morning and did my scheduled 8 miles. I was itching to try and match/beat my 10 miles from last weekend, but I know better....follow the plan! Darn competitive streak! But, my 8 miles went well, and I felt absolutely fabulous all afternoon. No soreness or stiffness at all. That's a first! So, I must have done SOMETHING right!
Jackie - Good luck with the MRI. I hope it's nothing that keeps you out of the race! And, I vividly remember all the local news about the cancelled Myrtle Beach Marathon last year. What a mess! Hopefully this year will be much better. I can say that it was the very first time I have EVER seen it snow like that on the beach! Weird.

Since I have not been sleeping, I took yesterday off and planned to go this morning but it is about to storm so I guess I am waiting a bit. I am planning on two miles {I know - pathetic} but will maybe see how I feel. I need to get an idea of timing for a race in the next couple of months. They have a time limit and I don't want to get kicked off the course.
Great job everyone on training!!

Meredith - I have to admit, we took a LOT of pictures in Myrtle Beach that weekend. It was really, really pretty. We don't see a whole lot of snow in Raleigh, so we had a lot of fun on Friday night walking around. Of course, we went to bed early assuming we were going to get up early for a race... but DD texted me around midnight to say she was sorry about the race (she'd already heard on the news about the cancellation - we didn't know yet!) We went out Saturday at noon and ran 11 miles in absolutely perfect weather. And still got the medal!
Joan - I'll be 48 in 4 weeks, so I'm right behind you. The 2006 Minnie was my first 5K - couldn't quite get the nerve to try for the 15K that year, and never made it back for the full distance before they canceled it. After being on the boards in January 2007 when everyone was gone for the races, I made a vow to be there with them the next year, so the 2008 Donald was my first half. I was supposed to do the City of Oaks in Raleigh that year, but a stress fracture kept me out of it and made sure that Disney was my first finish line! And Happy Birthday, a few days early!
Lexxie&Nicky - Two miles is not pathetic. Every mile counts. Right now I'd love to do 2 miles! And remember - everyone on these boards is at a different place in their training. It's real easy to start comparing yourself to people who're doing really long distances, and you don't have to do that. Each mile is a victory, depending on your training plan.
I'm headed to the library to pick up and return more books. The positive side of this injury is that I've read more in the past 2 months than I have since I started running. I love to read, but haven't had a lot of time to do that lately, but I've lost count of what I've read since June! Thanks for all the good vibes for the MRI - I'll take them with me, since I'm more than a little anxious about what it may involve. I remember something about "injection" and "painful," but I blocked out everything after that! :lmao:

Jackie your MRI should be a piece of cake! I have them all the time. The worst part is the noise. Otherwise I could take a lovely nap in that machine. :lmao: If you have it done with contrast, they do have to stick you, but it'll be easy! Have no fear! Just make sure you get your earplugs in all the way! I made that mistake once. :lmao:

Jackie Hope your MRI went okay and you get some good results soon. I could use a good book to read (since I'm 30+ on the waitlist for "The girl with...." series) What's your favorite that you've read recently?
Ronda and Meredith Glad that your LR went well. And it feels so good when you don't feel sore after them. And when it's like that after a race? It's like getting another medal!
Lily I can't imagine keeping up with your race schedule! Most WISHers race way more than I do. Hope your training starts off well, although it seems we're stuckw ith the heat.
So I didn't do my LR on Sunday--figured I would rest the legs on Sunday. Not sure if that plan worked out well, cause I did the run yesterday on about 2 hours sleep! Managed the pace I was supposed to be running up until about mile 16 or so and then dragged my way through the last 4. No sure how I an ever going to pick up the pace in a few weeks, but I'm not going to worry about that now. Every day is different when it comes to runs!
I am feeling good that my IT band issues have not surfaced given the length of my LR--I hope that means the yoga and foam roller are doing their things. But now my feet just seem to ache! Not PF, but Achilles and top of feet. Soaked em in ice water yesterday (at least while my dog wasn't trying to drink out of the foot bath!)
Off to swim and yoga!

Hi - I am new too and planning to do the Princess Half - I cannot believe I am saying that!!..... It makes me teary just thinking about it.
I once posted that I was dreaming of doing the full in January 2006. Right here on teh DIS. (I had never raced mroe than 5 miles and had not run in 17 years) Since tehn I have done 5 full marathons, 13? half marathons, 7 triathlon and a half Ironman. You can do it! Oh, I've shed many a happy tear about a race too. (We won't talk abou those other tears. ;) )
So do you see a lot of that in the actual race? The run/walk thing? I guess I pictured runners...and have been hard on myself when I break to walk. I'm hearing its actually good and can decrease your overall time if you do it right? Many, man run/walkers (and vice versa). Many feel tehy are faster if they add some walk to their run.
Jackie - Anxiously awaiting your results. I'm guessing you might be too. ;) Yeah, I think I'm milking the recovery. i was 100% percent by Wednesday. I recover so much easier from tri's. DOne yoga twice adn core since. relaly need to get moving again.
Got yall beat on age-started 2008 and did the Minnie 15K..I'll be 49 (sshh) on Tuesday. I did my first half last year--the princess and again this year and signed up today to do it again next year. You rock!!!!!

But, my 8 miles went well, and I felt absolutely fabulous all afternoon. No soreness or stiffness at all. That's a first! So, I must have done SOMETHING right! WOnderful!!!!!
Lily - Glad you are feeling good about training!!! You amaze me!
Well, things have been c razy since our race. Firends up from TX, family in town adn at teh hosue all weekend.... So, have not had much work out time. now, it's really hot and humid this week. ugh. Hopefully, we will at least bike and swim. Have a 5K HS alumni run Saturday. I am soooooo slow adn so much heavier than HS, so I am haivng issues. It's a big even, as it will be the last one for both teh grils adn teh guys' coaches. I highly disliked my coach adn he's why I gave up running. I so want to wear a button saying "I'm NOT here for *****" The guys coach was an amazing man, though, and I'd liek to say goodbye to him. So, I'm going ot put on my IM 70.3 visor and suck it up. ;)

Hello everybody. The weather in most of the country hasn't exactly been idea training wise but hopefully everyone is staying hydrated and getting out there early or late and avoiding the hottest parts of the day.
My marathon plan for January doesn't start for another month (the Hal Higdon plan) but I am starting to increase my miles now since I have 2 fall halves, a local one on 9/12 and the W&D on 10/2, and I want to have a respectable time at least for them.
I made the resort deposit today for January today so it feels more real, hopefully it will get me a couple of seconds/mile on my training runs :thumbsup2. We also kind of figured out what we are doing that weekend as far as which days we are going to do the parks and which days we are doing something else.

Finally saw the doc today. He said there's damage inside the hip, but I won't hurt it any more by running. So he's ordered a steroid injection (to be scheduled as soon as possible - he said it might take a week and I glared at him, so he said he'd tell them to put a rush on it :rotfl:), and a few days after that I'm free to run again. Once the season is over (or MCM is done), we'll re-evaluate and consider surgery to repair the damage. But it may not be necessary; just depends on how things progress over the next few months.
So I'm headed out in a while for 2-3 miles of a walk/light jog - I figure I'm not waiting for the injection to get moving if it's not going to cause any damage and I'm not hurting right now anyway. Cross your fingers!
NCrunner - Think I'll come your way and run. It's got to be just a little bit cooler than it is here! We'll pick up speed together. And like the others have said, you have plenty of time.
Frank - It's a wonder anyone is getting any training in with the summer we're all having. I keep hoping I'll wake up and it will be fall (except that then I'd know I hadn't gotten ANY training in for my marathon )

Welcome NC! Everyone's given you great insights with the RW. Just add me to the list of people who incorporate walking when it's hot, during LRs, when I see water stops (or better yet, chocolate stops....)
Jackie: Good news about the hip – for the most part. I know you'll tough it out with the injection because you're focused on conquering MCM. And it's got to be such a HUGE relief to know that you're not doing any more damage by running. Just take it easy until you get the shot.
Carrie: I know I hit you on FB, but big CONGRATULATIONS!
I'm not going to try and hit everyone on the post, but a hearty, big hello. I'm so glad this summer is nearly over and stability has come back into my sad little life. I might have to accept that summers are not good times for me to stay in contact, though.
Or to run. Boy, has it been spotty for me this summer. Partly due to a work and travel schedule that was even more erratic, but mostly due to heat & problems breathing. Puts a real cramp in my plan to retire & work at Disney.
On the upside, I've officially broken my obsession with watching my Garmin instead of the road. With as few miles I put on it at any given run, it's just not worth looking at. :rotfl2:
Again, great to be back here. I tend to rely too much on FB to keep tabs on folks, but that's not the same as the conversations here. :goodvibes

Is there a 12 step program? I wasn't exactly 'watching' it when I took my 'trip' a few weeks back now. Thankfully I do watch the sidewalk as much as one can in the dark. Amazingly, I landed and kept running. But addicted to Garmie? Totally! The lady at the gym asked if I ever run for time. I gave her a look that said she was completely crazy "Time? Run for time? What's that?" So do tell me how does one break the Garmin obsession?
Still alive here, running yes. Many a night my neighbors get to watch me and my dog run by while listening to me cursing either the dog for pushing the pace or the garmin for saying I'm doing a 18 min/mile while running. It's a love hate relationship, same with the Garmin ;)
Happy trails!

I have a mostly love relationship with my Polar. I don't run by it, I run with it. It tells me when to turn around and go home. Later it tells me how I did. I'll check it if something doesn't feel right. Usually it tells me, yup, you're going faster than usual. It's nice to validate sucking wind. It's great for run/walk intervals, too.
The obsession comes later when I load the results and start to parse the laps, pace, trends. Oh, yeah.
Six miles this morning. 73 degrees. It's supposed to cool off tomorrow. It's like a carrot. My Tuesday run might be in the 60s!!
I hope everyone is getting their run in.

Hey WISHers!
Just wanted to pop in to introduce the little WISHer who did the Goofy, the Rock 'n' Roll Seattle half marathon, and a whole bunch of 5K's with me!
Callum Francis was born on August 8, at 8 lbs! He's also determined to make some speed records of his own, as we almost didn't make it to the hospital on time, he arrived so fast! I'm totally in love. :lovestruc

Callum is looking forward to meeting everyone at the January POP meet - I'm sure he thinks it's a little unfair that he won't be able to participate in the races, even though all his race times for the last 9 months were a fraction of a second faster than mine! :rotfl: However, he does have his first race (a 4 mile fun run/walk) on the Labor Day long weekend!

Hi everyone-
I'm Mindy and I am a newbie on this thread. I am a walker (at least so far). My son is a dedicated runner, and has been helping me as much as he can, but I am interested in chatting with other walkers, since he freely admits that running and walking sometimes have different "rules". I've walked for weight loss purposes for many years on and off. Two and a half years ago I had some health problems and decided I needed to get serious about things and start taking care of myself. So far I have lost 120 pounds by proper diet/portion sizes and exercise (the "old-fashioned" way, as I call it). I'd still like to lose another 10-15, but I am at least now out of the "Overweight" range for BMI, and considered "Normal" (or as normal as I get! ;)) I got serious about my walking, and after watching from the sidelines while my son did his first Half at WDW in 2009, made a pledge with myself to train and meet the pace requirement for the 5K in 2010. Happy to report that despite a knee injury from a fall 2 weeks before the race, I was able to walk it in 46 minutes! :thumbsup2 My son is doing the Hershey Half Marathon in October, and my husband and I are going to walk it as a relay team (a half Half each). Their pace requirements are less stringent than Disney, but I am still training at a fast pace, because I would love to attempt the Half when DS does the full at WDW in 2012.
Anyway, just wanted to say hi and join the team. I've already been lurking on one of the walking threads, and plan to join in shortly.

Hi Ronda! Thanks for the Polar shout out :) Garmin always comes to mind first for me, I'll have to check out Polar. :) Last night I decided to just do my 3 miles and concentrate on the uneven sidewalk rather than my pace. We both finished happier. Me, less stressed. Garmie ... alive for another day. :thumbsup2

Dawg Days of summer...I felt like a dog with my tongue hanging out after the 10 miles this morning. 99% humidity and 75 degrees, but it's done and now I can taper for the DL 1/2.
Jackie Hope your hips feels better and better and you don't have to have surgery.
For you "watch" watcher be careful. I'm not a "watch" watcher and stumbled and fell in May and tore both thumb ligaments and it is still not well. Very painful injury-not complaining as after the doctor looked at it, he then said "you can still run"
Have a great week and drink plenty of water!;)

Hi M indy - Welcome to WISH!
OMG Sarah Rose - he is adorable! Look forward to seeing him at Pop.
I'm back from a short beach vacation. Had a great time, except for the end. Ever notice when you want to try something "one last time" then that's when you get hurt? Ugh!
I was on the beach Saturday, in and out of the ocean. Weather and water was great. So, just before I'm ready to leave, I tell my niece I'm going in to catch a few last waves. Well, the 2nd wave got me. They were coming in fast. I dove under the first. Saw the 2nd and planted my feet to brace for the hit. Unfortunately, the wave was big and knocked me backwards, but my left foot stuck in the sand. I could feel the crunch of my hamstring pulling. Saw a few stars. The worst is when I sit in a charit and my leg presses against the seat. Ouch!
I know there's no quick fixes and it'll need a little time to heal. I did ice it and wrap it. Been keeping it elevated whenever possible. It just sucks because I was going to do a 1/2 in mid-Sept. Hoping it'll heal enough.
If anyone has any suggestions, I'm all ears!

SarahCongrats and welcome to Callum!
Jackie Sorry to hear about the hip and hope your runs are okay and that you can still do MCM.
Diane Watch out for those "evil" sidewalks. They will trip you up when they get the chance!
Ronda Let's hear it for cool weather. My DS--who HATES winter actually said she wished it was since she is so sick of the heat! This am feels pretty good to me--why wasn't it this way yesterday?
Debra Hope your autumn is more stable than the summer. And to those of us who don't do facebook or twitter or any other social media platform (I'm probably the only one!), glad to see you.
Mindy Welcome to the Wonderful World of WISH!
Joan Ouch for the thumb. I face planted on the sidewalk last year--walking, no less. But no serious injuries--just embarassment!
Terri Hope the hamstring heals quickly. Not a good way to end a vacation!
As for me....winding down the time til I send my youngest off to school--I miss his moody teenage presence already!
So I managed my own "barefoot" injury the other day--was walking over to a friend's around the corner and just must have stepped on a rock or something. Bruised my heel. Bagged one of my runs just to let it recover, but it hasn't so far. It's not bad, just a bruise--but it's the location that makes it challenging.
Did my 13 yesterday--this was a "low mileage" LR week. I was looking forward to it since I figured it would be a leisurely run. No such luck! My plan called for a pace that is faster than the runs that I have been doing lately. Not a really fast pace--but in this weather, it is hard. I made it through, but it was more work than I was expecting.
Time to go hit the gym--I'm uninspired......

Joan regarding the watch-watching ;) I've come to an agreement with my Garmie. I will ignore it till I need to know roughly how close to the mileage I'm looking for when running around the neighborhood. :thumbsup2
Maura! That sidewalk jumped up and tried to grab me! I had to outrun it:scared1: Seriously, that piece of sidewalk needed to be RE replaced. It looked to be somewhat new since it is still nice and white. It sticks up at least an inch on the one corner which is what I think grabbed my shoe. I watch other areas and even in the really really pitch dark section will run on the road. Gotta watch out for twigs, 1 house had a ton of twigs on their sidewalk. Thankfully I'm aware of them and watch for all those 'special' places. They do not leave with me with the warm fuzzy feelings. :headache:
Joan I hope the shot helps you feel better and that later you don't need surgery.
Lindybug YAY! on the Marathon! :cheer2:
Teri Hope the hamstring heals quickly. No suggestions just a lot of PD for a quick healing :wizard:

Well, it looks like I'm out of the RnR Philly race in Sept. Went to doc today for my hammie. She took one look at the back of my leg and said "I think you tore that baby". Going to see Ortho tomorrow (luckily they had a cancellation). But she told me not to even think about the Sept. race. The medal looked so cool!
Hoping that I can rehab to be ready for the Monster Dash in late Oct. Right now the back of my leg is one big blotch of red. Ewww!

C2C medal, but airfare never got reasonable, so we'll have to try it another year. My niece will stick to halfs from now on (I may have to do her registration so she doen't make another boo boo like last year )

Terri - ouch and dang. Hoping for fast healing. Rest and recover.
Lindybug - welcome aboard!
Mauar - the weather the last two days has been amazing. 20 degrees cooler. Biking and running like I've been training in the heat!
Sarah - he's beautiful.
Mindy - welcome! Doesn't "normal" feel great. I'm on the cusp of being normal, too.
Yesterday's run was great. Good splits and easy recovery. A little stiffness in my left knee. I've decided that's from running and then sitting at my desk for eight hours. After my long runs (Saturday) I keep moving and don't have problems. Another 4 tomorrow and 9 on Saturday. Whee!
I've made a room only ressie for marathon weekend. Since nothing else is refundable, that's as far as I'm willing to go now. But it's SOMETHING.

Diane: I broke the Garmin fixation by running a measley amount of miles, mostly without the watch. I kept forgetting to a) pack it during several trips or b) charge it. So being disorganized has its odd benefits. Of course, now I'm totally hooked on my iPod and DIS podcasts, so I'm not winning the "over-reliance on technology" game. :lmao:
I totally agree with both you and Ronda about the love-hate relationship. Just having it sit on a dresser is enough to get me out the door, even without it strapped on my wrist.
Ronda: Woo hoo on the room ressies for January. That's on my list, somewhere, sometime. Gotta commit to something about the weekend, right? And a bigger woo hoo :woohoo: for yesterday's run. Like you, I always feel better if I move after a LR – it's the sitting that kills me.
Sarah: Oh, my, Callum is just a handsome lad! :lovestruc We're always happy to have another WISHer around, especially at POP. And I think he'll steal more than a few hearts. And kudos to you for instilling the running spirit in him from the womb and so soon after birth. :cool1:
Mindy: Welcome, welcome! I think you'll like it here – we have a great team for support in all areas and the walkers just blow me away with their knowledge. (Not to mention many of them can beat my time!) :worship:
Joan: Ouch! Torn thumb ligaments sound absolutely excruciating. Sure, you can run, but all the other things.... I hope you've recovered, mostly, and with as little pain as possible. And I'm with you about those dog days of summer. They make me want to howl.
Terri: Speaking of pain, I'm so sorry to hear about your torn hammy. Not only painful and bad timing, but the accident can really color what sounded like a marvelous beach vacation. I know you're experienced enough to let it heal properly, but I'll say "be careful" anyway. Your doctor does know best, and think about how cool that Monster medal will look. I bailed on DL 1/2, too, due to cost & an over-committed summer travel schedule. Luckily, I don't think that race is going away anytime soon.
Maura: Excellent job on the 13! I can't ever imagine you as uninspired in your workouts! And you always seem to hit your goals with style and grace. Maybe you could video yourself walking with a bit of limp, thanks to your bruised heel. That would make me feel less like the accident-prone oaf that I am. Yeah, thanks for helping me out with the ego. :rotfl2:
Lindy: Welcome to the madness! You'll love it here – when I don't post, I miss it!
AFM: Still keeping to the short mileage this week. But I didn't feel totally wiped today (or this weekend) like I have been. Must be back-to-school time – I can't count it as fall yet, but there is that shift in the weather that whispers sweet promises in my ear. Yay!
No big fall races planned – just can't manage the work & travel calendar this year. Too many other commitments. Which is kind of good, as I can concentrate on local events & January as my treat. Right? (Someone talk me out of sulking about canceled plans.) :lmao:

Thanks Ronda & Debra!
Saw the Ortho today. He said no impact activities (running/jumping, etc.) for 4-6 weeks. Can't even bike or do teh elliptical for 2-3 weeks, depending on how PT goes. The resident/intern was shocked when he asked to look at my hammie and saw the size of the bruise. Said I "did it good" and he was impressed. Yeah, thanks a lot.
So I'm gonna turn my lemons into lemonade. Besides resting & rehabbing the hammie, I'll spend the next 4-6 weeks working on my core and upper body strength. Core is definitely not my strong point (those darn choc. chip cookies ;)) so this will force me to work on it since I won't be able to do much else.
Welcome Lindy!
Maura - great job on your 13!

Terri sorry to hear about the length of the rehab for the hammie but Go Terri Go on the Core training!!!! Good idea to focus on that as a positive :thumbsup2
Debra you've noticed the discounts for the room reservations right? :teacher: But hey, thanks for letting me take care of that 1st so I wasn't DEAD last on the ressie front ;) I'm going thru the pro's and con's of the hotel choice. The major pro: Location = My peeps. :thumbsup2
Hit the gym last night. No running. Me and George (TM) weren't seeing eye to eye. Or maybe George got the memo that I wasn't suppose to run last night & decided to annoy me enough to make me walk away  Did the circuit and thought about quitting after the 2nd trip. A heavy sigh and sucking it up along with a healthy does of internally whining that I was tired and hungry and I finished the workout. Today I feel like a Disney bus ran me over. But that could be the allergies, it's mostly my head. Feels like someone put bricks in there.
This weekend's challenge and goal: Settle on a training plan. A real one, not one that I toss together although that did work last year :) But this year I feel I need a plan so I don't injure myself.
Happy Training all! :cheer2:

LOL Ronda. Oh I have my bad days with that TM but after running my first 8 miles with not a stop I was a bit delirious. All my good TM runs take place on that one TM. I decided I was going to keep it. "I will name him George, and I will hug him, and pet him, and squeeze him" I took a pic of the TM screen showing the distance which was my phone's wall paper till the Goofy medal :) I was a pretty happy gal that day.
Actually last week I was mentally calling it names and giving it the evil eye. We don't always have a good workout together. Those days I just walk away and head to the circuit :thumbsup2
In non-training news. Today I had a hawk land in my yard. Ok, landing might be mild to what it actually had in mind. But all my little birdies had flew the coop and were safe :) It was wild seeing that HUGE beastie standing on the ground next to my feeder pole. Wild!
Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Nine miles done. New route was a good idea. The trail I normally use for Saturday runs was sloppy after storms last night. New route was challenging though. Lots of up and down through neighborhoods, parks and creek bottoms. Really pushed me. I used a 5/1 run walk and averaged 12:30.
Weather has been much better. Upper 80s, low 90s. Yea!

Glad the weather worked to for you today Ronda :) I have to relocated my Garmin book to try something like a 5/1. Last time I tried, let's just sat I must have set it up wrong because during what should have been the 'walk' portion the stop watch paused until the 'run' portion started again.
Tonight, ran 4 miles with my training partner. She tends to push at the start but otherwise she's good company. We had good weather, about 73* at 9 pm with humidty that was bearable. We ran thru this little park (I mean LiTTLE) and I hit a puddle or something and felt my shoe go squish. The other thing I love about the training partner. She wasn't offended when I said "will you sniff this and tell me if I just stepped in do-do?" She assured me I was safe to walk in the house later and to start running again. :dogdance:paw:paw:paw:
Hoping everyones having a great weekend!

Diane I went outside the other day and saw a hawk sitting about 20 ft away on my fence. Saw another one yesterday while walking the dog. In the past, I have also seen one make a midair kill in our backyard.
Ronda Glad your new route was enjoyable and your training continues to go well.
Terri Sorry about the hamstring. I hope your core training pays dividends. Seems like there's always some area of the body that can use work. Not enought time inthe day (or motivation) to deal with them all!
Lindy Congrats for signing up for the marathon!
Debra Sulk away if you want (Yes, I'm one of those people who believe in indulging one's mopier tendencies sometimes!) Hope you find some good local events tp keep your training & motivation going. I don't know what I'll do after my fall races--probably won't do WDW in January.
Did 18 yesterday. While the weather is getting better, my times are still a little off. And did my legs ache after the run! It took an hour for them to feel better. But still, I'm making it through this plan--which is definietly more advanced than the novice marathon plan I did for Mickey. Over the course of 16 weeks, the long runs have 60 more miles than the novice plan, along with 5-20 mile runs!
On the home front, DS is now away at school--and I have a whole new set of things to worry about. Will he make friends? will he do well in his classes? will he locate the nearest In-N-Out burger place for me ot try when I show up? At least I get a live chek-in over Labor Day while I am out for the DL half.
Have a good week all.

Maura ... Yay on the 18 miles!!! :woohoo: and I keep half expecting to see the hawk again.. That was so very cool but I want my birdies safe and yet I still want to see it again preferrably with empty claws. I know it must eat too but I'll be happy to give it an entire suet block of it's very own if it leaves my birdies alone :)
DEBRA!?!?!?!? Hotel reservations yet? Just checking.
Last night I actually went out during the daylight hours! The temps were nice except the humidity. But still, nice temps and nice breeze. Completed a 3 mile run at a 12:01 avg pace. Yee Haw! And yes I did give a little Yee Haw when I realized how fast I was able to go and so much more confidently with the sun lighting my uneven sidewalk path. No squinting ahead trying to decide if that concrete slab is going to rise up and take me out. :thumbsup2 Course I did get stopped once due to my training partner being admired. Does anyone else get tired of listening to how beautiful their training partner is? Watching her shake her head setting her long ears into motion as if she is trying out for a commercial? Listen girl, I'm standing here sweating my tushie off and that chocolate milk is still waiting! Sign the autograph book and let's get a move on! *sigh* It's a trial somedays having the most beautiful training partner in the neighborhood :rotfl:
Oh and were the other little "training partners" all out in force last night. Went to move to the otherside only to spot another runner and partner. Dog(s) on the left, Dog on the right left us with the middle of the road.
We're looking at some cooler temps this week! Should be nice Maura, Carrie and Margie! Hope everyone else has good weather coming their way :)

I should not admit it, but I really don't want to start marathon training. We will tri train until Sept 11 adn then it's all marathon. I will miss my bike. Diane: You go on about your beautiful training partner and then you go on to NOT post a picture? :rotfl: I'll admit that I have the same issue with my training partner - and he definitely knows that he's beautiful. In fact, he sometimes looks offended when people don't compliment him.
Maura: :thumbsup2 on the 18!!! I can't imagine doing a marathon at this time of year - I just can't handle the heat! As much as I complained about freezing my butt off for my 20 miler last year (practice for the Goofy, as it turned out!), the heat would be much worse!
I've decided that September 7th is going to be my "drop dead date" for starting running again. It'll be Callum's one month birthday, and I just won't have an excuse not to run anymore. I've been taking it very easy since I ran my last HM in late June, so I worry that it'll take a lot for me to bounce back in time to start training for the WDW HM. Did 6 miles yesterday. A few on my own then circled back for "K" and some water for us both. We did have a few water stops. It was just to sunny & warm for her not to. But my Garmin pauses when we stop. So the overall pace for my 6 was 12:40. Not bad. I think had it been cooler it would have been a bit faster. We were flying in a couple of spots. Her 1st mile alone was under 12 and that was with me pulling back yelling WHOAAAAA DOGGY! :lmao:
Home to cold water and ice cubes and a good day was had by all :)

Hey, everyone! Mind if I join in?? I'm an "adult onset" runner and started the c25K plan on June 21st of this year. My first race ever is the Mickey's Halloween 5k through the Magic Kingdom on Oct. 2nd. Four weeks away! :scared1: I will be running this thing one month shy of my 51st birthday! And just to make things more interesting, I'm pooh sized to boot! Although, I have lost almost 30 lbs since starting the C25K plan.
Yesterday I finished my Week 6 by running continuously on the TM for 2 miles, taking a walk break, and finishing the 2.25 mile distance with an avg 15:15 pace. Ahead of the WDW sweeper pace, which made me very happy. I just wish I could have run the entire distance like the plan called for...
I am so glad to have discovered the WISHers. You all are truly inspirational and encouraging! I've learned so much from everyone. Thanks, and happy training everyone!

Great work on the loss, too!
I did six miles today. Average pace 11:20. Nice flat route along the trolly track trail. I've been pushing the pace in this week's runs. Probably :20-:30 quicker than usual. I feel some soreness for the next day, but it's gone in time for the next run. Feels like progress!

Hi all! New to this thread too, though I've been lingering on W & D & Princess threads & just found this. Glad I did!
It's great to see later in life starters! I started running under duress a year ago in May at 39 & 6 months after the birth of my 2nd son. Honestly I had no interest at first, but when I saw the rapid changes in the bod, then did the TOT all by myself last October, I was absolutely hooked! My DH can't understand why the Disney races when there are so many races near home. The Disney races are just so much fun & come with the support of the WISH threads, they have been the thing that's inspired me!
Good thing we're DVC members & I'm good at scoping out the $9 airfares on Spirit! lol. Going to have to get some DVC points just for the races!
Since an injury in March, I'm doing a pretty steady 12 min/ mi pace with some walking thrown in. I was at a solid 11min mile for the Princess until my knee buckled right in front of Buzz Lightyear in the MK! That was awful, but I managed to get it working again & finished at 2:44.
So, for the W&D my 2 big issues are calves and the right knee. Hopefully the strength training & cross training I've thrown in will help.
Looking for any pointers from you marathon go-ers! I'm so inspired by all the training & race reports. :worship:
Thanks!!

Sarah Maybe you could train the German Shepherds to pull the stroller while you run behind?;)
MamaCrush Welcome and congrats on your great results so far! I took up running at the ripe old age of 49 and ran the Minnie 15k 2 months before my 50th birthday. I don't do a large quantity of races, but I have done 5k, 10k, 1/2 marathon, marathon and sprint triathlon. So you have lots to look forward to or to challenge yourself to!
Ronda Great progress! Sounds like you're speeding up, which comes with time and effort. And "a little sore" sorat feels good--you know you've been working.
bounceliketigger I understand about the Disney race draw--my DH is not a Disney fan, but I think he humors me for these races. At leas I am going to run--as opposed to the 25+ previous trips where I just went! Hope your training continues well and don't worry about/push the speed. Listen to your knees and calves and give them a rest if needed. I have had intermittent IT and issues, and have taken whole rest weeks (even 2-3 weeks before a 1/2 or full marathon) if I though I neede it. And it hasn't hurt my race outcome. Keep up the Xt and strength training, and maybe also work in some post run stretches. I have become a big fan of yoga for that very purpose.
AFM....Did another 20 miler this week, faster than plan called for (I a m somewhat pace-challenged--even with a Garmin!) Looking forward to the DL 1/2 on Sunday and maybe a chance to meet some new WISHers.

Thanks for the welcome guys!
DianeL: Love your training partner!! I would love to take my big ole silver lab out with me, but she's torn the doggie equivalent to an achilles tendon so she's on injured reserve. And anyway, I think her pace would kill me! :cutie:
SarahRose: You are awesome! My DD is 8 and I'm just now getting out to run! :guilty:
Ronda93: I love it when I feel a bit sore after a run. It makes me feel official! But seriously, it just reassures me that all the effort isn't for nothing.
Bounceliketigger: The whole reason I even began to run is because after watching Jillian help a woman comparable to my age and size run a 5K, I stumbled on the WISH board and learned about the Mickey Halloween 5K. If she can do it, I certainly can. And she didn't have the benefit of Mickey leading the way! My DH is just so happy I'm committed to becoming healthier he has no complaints about going to Disney for a race or two (little does he know it's bound to become more than a couple!). Also, since we want to do race trips on budget, it's a great time for us to get some alone time by leaving the two kids with family. And they're ok with it since we take a family trip to WDW at least once a year. Gotta love DVC points!!
Maura: A friend of mine just gave me a Garmin to use since she's not running anymore. It kind of intimidates me so I haven't used it yet... I know I'll force myself though once I start training for the Princess.
Yesterday was an awesome session. I began Week 6 to C25K and was to run 2.5 miles continuously. I made it to 2.3 (my furthest so far) then fast walked the remaining .2. My average pace was 15:08-- my fastest so far. I was really psyched since my last couple of sessions were tough going. :thumbsup2
Great job everyone! Here's to a new training week! :grouphug:

Hi everybody,
I'm a newbie to this tread and a newbie to running too! I've never been a runner but I've started with the C25K program and I'm on week 3 now. I've registered for the 1/2 marathon in January. Hopefully it is not too lofty of a goal. I figure I will be done with C25k the first week of October and it will still give me about 13 weeks to train for the 1/2 marathon. I'm not looking to set any records. Just finish without getting swept.
I had origionally started out planning to do a 5K but I've been inspired to do the 1/2 by all the wonderful stories I've read here on the WISH boards. I'm looking forward to sharing this expreience with all of you!

Mamacrush ... Thanks :) I hope your puppy feels better soon :flower3: Great job on the distance/pace! :cheer2:
Maura ... I know your doing DL. But 20 miles? Are you doing the local Marathon this year? The bridge/tunnel still makes me nervous. I'm sure one year I'll suck it up and do it though LOL I hear you on the pace thing. I seem to be getting a bit better though. So there is hope! Unless your 80 lb training buddy decides they want to do 'their' pace and not yours.
Welcome Lolakat! You can totally do it! Some great reading if you haven't seen it yet is pretty much anything by John Bingham but most around here have his "Marathoning for Mortals". Has both Half and Full plans and includings walk/run; run/walk and run. The book is at home but I think it even has a walk only plan too. I just had to pick up a copy myself. The Courage to Start is also a great read though I don't think it has any plans in it though I could be wrong ... again at home LOL
Gym night for me today :) Hope the work week treats everyone well and flies to the weekend :thumbsup2

Welcome Lolakat! Getting started is 1/2 the battle, but you're right about all the encouragement here. You'll find a lot of help to keep you going.
AFM, having a super frustrating morning! Set out last night to do 5 @ 5am, couldn't sleep, baby woke up super early, DH wouldn't get outta bed & my calves can't handle a stroller run- still too sore from a huge hill on Friday. So I guess i'll make it a cross train day @ the gym during my lunch hour.
Ever feel like everything is plotting against your training?? UGH!

Ugh. The heat and humidity are back. Hopefully it is their swan song. Slowed me down a little this morning. Four miles along the trolley track.
Welcome Lolakat! I second Diane's endorsement of John Bingham's Marathoning for Mortals. Good guide for the first timer. I used it to prepare for WDW 2010 Half.
Let's finish August with a bang!

Welcome Lolakat! I'm a newbie too. I'm on C25K Week 7 right now, so I'm just a bit ahead of you. It's an awesome program, isn't it?! I'm running Mickey's Halloween 5K on Oct 2 and then will start training for the Princess Half at the end of February. I know what you mean about reading the stories around here... they suck you over to the "dark side" pretty quickly!! :thumbsup2 I was tearing up at the Princess stories so I had to jump in and plan for 2011. I'm thinking about Marathon for Mortals because I LOVE the book and philosophy. But just to make sure, I'll be checking out a couple of other training plans before I finally decide.
Have fun and enjoy the process!

Afternoon All :wave2:
Hit the gym last night. I'm having a terrible time with the dreadmill. Either it hates me or my shoes (which are very low in miles since they are stuck in the gym) need to be replaced. Tomorrow I will try another machine. I can run outside for 6 miles but the TM gave me such grief last night that 2 miles (the plan) was a pain! I kept the cursing under my breath (jk, totally internal LOL) but came close to flinging my shoes across the room. But didn't think the Zumba class would like that (or deserve the flying missle since they really are a bunch of nice ladies). So I sucked it up and only growled as I left
I did do my weights which is good. Getting that routine back in line.
Ronda, tonight is some miles outside for me in the heat too. I feel your pain.
BouncelikeaTigger UGH! on the way your morning started. I hope you were able to find some gym time at lunch and it went better :)
Update on the Walking Plan. I was totally have a duh moment yesterday. But of course there are Walking Only Plans for both the Half and Full in the Marathoning for Mortals book.
Looking forward to this weekend as the temps are suppose to be much cooler. I think high 60's for Saturday! YAY!!! You know what day I'll be doing the long miles on ;) :thumbsup2
Have a wonderful Tuesday!

Diane - ohh the dreadmill. I'm right there with ya'. Imho, it's kind of like a long car ride--once you settle in & get used to the fact that you're going to be there for a while, stop thinking about how long & just try to relax into it, it's much better. It's that darn first few mile for me that are just awful. Of course a good movie helps.
I am curious about how you make out with the shoes though. I'm always trying to pin my leg issues on shoes. I actually found some sort of expert who will analyze your gait then coach you accordingly. Thinking about giving that a try. I'd do just about anything to get over my rubber band lower legs.
Today I did a solid hour on the stair climber, then eliptical--30 min. each. My gym has TVs on each piece of equipment & "The Time Traveler's Wife" was on, so that passed the time pretty easily. :rolleyes1
Going for the 5 at 5 again tomorrow. Hope tomorrow morning goes better than today!:yay:

Welcome MamaCrush, lolakat adn bounceliketigger!
Daine - SO sorry about your pix. :-( Love your trianing partner!
Maura - No WDW in January? :guilty: We will miss you! Good luck at DL!
Susan - Good ot see you!
Debra - Traning is so hard without a race. I have been slacking so bad since the 70.3. Even my race 1.5 weeks ago and a sprint in 1.5 weeks don't motivate em at the moment. Bad. Thought of you as I realized yesterday that it's been ages tsince I thought about my posture. :sad2:

Well, still no good run in this week.
Yesterday did a solid hour on the stairclimber & elliptical though, then a few minutes on the DM followed by pretty intense core strength training today. Taking tomorrow off, cross & hills Friday, then 8-10 this weekend.
Need pixie dust for my calves & shins!

You're right & I do need to take time off but I want to be ready. Ugh. I did a long run last friday & took 3 days off but the big hill @ the end of the run killed the lower legs. Think I'm gonna stay off them till monday. Thanks for the reality check!

I read an article that said, "The workout is the architect, the rest is the builder." I can't remember exactly who said it, but I'm thinking it was Jillian Michaels. But that reinforces everything I've been reading. Kind of makes me feel better when I feel like I should be doing more than my training plan.

Diane I signed up to do Free Press Marathon the other day. It is my goal/hope/dream to break 4 hours for the marathon and qualify for Boston. So the DL 1/2 is really just a training run for me (and I NEVER would have though I'd hear myself call a 1/2 marathon that in my wildest dreams!)
Carrie While I'm most likely/definitely skipping marathon weekend, I would like to do the Princess. I figure it would be nice to have a complete set of Disney medals. Which means Princess, Wine & DIne (if it still lasts) and Goofy. So I've got a few more excuses to give DH for trips!
Heading off to DL this afternoon minus doing my tempo run today. I strained some lower back muscles--probably yoga or my mattress--so I decided to "take the rest cure". Got my bags packed--mostly stuff for my DS, who we'll see this weekend. And I'm flying first class, so I hope to be comfy.
Have a great holiday weekend all.

Maura - have a great trip adn a great race!!!!!! Someday I'll get that partners' medal. Hopefully, I will see you at Princess. No Detroit fro us, as we'll be cruising!
bounceliketigger - A good rest when needed can do more for you than anything. One year, I didn't work out fro two weeked before marathon, except 1 30 min run 2 days before the race to see if my legs still moved after being sick for so long. I was fine.
MamaCrush - I always struggle with rest, as I am inerently lazy and have to check myself as to whether I am being lazy or not. Rest can do wonders, though, and you definitely do not want to fo above your plan on your first try at a distance. You need to get through without injury and then see how you can tweak it.
