View Full Version : Paper Piecing Swap - Complete!

Welcome to the Paper Piecing Swap!
1st Check-In: Aug 21st
2nd Check-In: Sept 10th
Mail Date: Sept 17th
Due Date: Sept 24th
I am traveling starting Oct 2nd, so if I do not receive all packages before Oct 1, return will be delayed.
Element list: This is a paper piecing swap, so there is no element list. However, by paper piecing, we mean something with multiple colored layers. Some of the Cricut cuts are more accurately called a “layered die cut” because they have a base, with one or maybe two additional colors. If you want to make cuts that aren’t true paper piecings (like some of the cuts from the Holiday cartridges, icon features from the Disney carts, etc), make 2 per person. Your paper piecing should be a minimum of 4" in one direction, but you can make them larger if you want. Paper Piecings are easier to create the larger they are. You don't have to use the shadow feature for the Cricut paper piecings, but you can if you want.
If you are using a Cricut to make your pieces, please sign up for only the groups marked Cricut. If you are handcutting your pieces, or using a computer program to make images to cut with SCAL, or on a Wishblade/CraftRobo, you may sign up for any group. This is to account for the differences in difficulty/time between the two methods. And also to account for people who want images different than are available on cartridges.
Info: Once this swap closes, I will send out my mailing/contact info. Please send me yours: name, DISname, address, email, phone number (only will be used if I can’t contact you through PM or email)
Check In: Check-In dates are listed at the beginning of this post. If you miss a check-in, I will PM/email you. If I do not hear from you 48 hours after that, your spots will be angeled. If you are going to be away for a check-in, let me know.
Packaging: Place your completed element in a Ziploc with your DISname, name and group number. The piece should fit inside the bag entirely, and be sealed. Take all of your baggies for a group and place them in GALLON size bag, and label with the same.
Postage: Here are the prices for Flat Rate Priority Mail Shipping. Envelope - $4.90, Small Box - $4.95, Medium box – $10.70, Large - $14.50. You may send to me, by any method you choose, but I would prefer to send to you using flat rate boxes/envelopes. I won’t require Delivery Confirmation, UNLESS you are sending to me ON or AFTER the swap due date, Sept 24th. If you want your items shipped to you with DC, please include the $.70, and a filled out slip. Do not send Clik-It/Ship It printed postage. Cash, check, actual stamps are ok.

I'd like to drop this:
D. Handmade/Computer Disney Holiday--Minnie wearing Christmas outfit she wears when greeting in AK Camp Minnie Mickey

Can I change my "Cowboy Mickey" to Cowboy Goofy? thanks a ton.

07-29-2010, 11:53 AM
what size are the paper dolls to be?
hopemax
07-29-2010, 12:48 PM
I don't have a strong preference on sizes. The one time I made a paper doll character, I did it at 5.5." But I think it should be at least the 4" minimum as the rest of the paper piecings. When I made my doll, I did find it easier to work with, the larger he was.
ohMom
07-29-2010, 03:17 PM
well i was impatient and started cutting, but cut them to 4". i cut all the pieces for Mary Poppins and oh my! she is cute! i hope we end up with a full group....i'm making enough for 6 (wink, wink, yes, you...thinking of joining..)

So I've been on a roll this week, and already have 6 of my groups done.
So this is A, B, E, F, J & K. You can't tell in the picture but the Cat in the Hat has both black & white flocking. And I put the black flock on white paper, so it has a bleed through of the white paper. Kind of like how the drawings look, with the black not being solid.

Hi Liz, since we were passed signups, I haven't been checking this thread as frequently. Unfortunately, I think it might be too late to get you in. Which group, specifically, did you want to be in; a paper doll group or the handmade-boy group?
If other people in the group, are willing to add another person, we can do it. But if people have already bought supplies and don't have enough to make another piece, then you may be out of luck.

Great stuff posted so far!!
I finished this swap up over the weekend. I forgot first of all how fun these are to do, and second how soothing I find the monotony of Cricut-ing, Xyron-ing, assembling. I've been swap-free for awhile, but this reminded me how swapping can re-charge my creative batteries.
Here are my 3 groups - A, B and C:

dacky -- Ariel in green (no fins) is fine with me
wdwmickey -- i would vote for classic red/white minnie
NEE -- those are awesome!
dacky -- the mickey/pluto that's coming my way!
check-in -- a little early -- i have finisihed Belle, though looking at how perfectly put together everyone else's is...i'm feeling second-rate. idk, maybe i have just been staring at her too much and see the fine detail "flaws"....
beyond that -- I'm done with 2/3 paper dolls and just have finishing touchs on my pajama girl.
haven't started Genie yet...plan too this week

Here is my Haunted Mansion Doombuggy. I've been working on it all week--getting up at 5:30 am to work on it before the kids are up then continuing to work on it every free moment I had. It took forever with having to do 3 characters and the ride car! There are LOTS of tiny pieces. I traced all the pieces from a coloring page using the lightbox and then handcut them so they are not "perfect" like the cricut cuts. Goofy's black ears/head and Mickey's black head and body are flocked. The ghost has 2 layers of vellum on him to make him look hazy. I hope you like it!!!!

I'm going to start working on my Soda Shop Minnie--it will match the colors for 50's Prime Time Cafe and Sci-Fi Drive In. I'm camped out at the kitchen table working on these and keeping an eye on my sweet puppy who got neutered yesterday. He looks so cute in his onesie that I just had to show you. We put this on him so he can't lick his owie. Here's Bentley:

ok dokie...2 of my 3 groups really are finished now haha.
I am making Ariel more of a task that I should...I was having a hard time finding the right colors for her dress and finally chose a blue/green. I hope everyone likes it! I added a little glitter.

Here's an update of Christmas Pluto. I actually used tape on the back to attach the lights- easily removable. There is also a good couple of inches of lights that could be used as a border or cut off...I thought it looked cute hanging off of him.

Finished all of my Soda Shop Minnies today. :woohoo:Hooray! Only one more group to go. I flocked all of Minnie's body-ears, arms, legs. Her shoes have embroidery floss laces sewn on but you can't tell in the photo. The root beer float has crystal lacquer on the glass and glittered liquid applique "froth" to make it look more realistic. I hope everyone likes it!!

This was my first time to ever try flocking. It was easy!!! I bought "Fun Flock' in the rubber stamping area of Michaels. Use a Zig 2 way glue pen and cover the area you want to be fuzzy. Dump a bunch of flock on the wet glue and spread it around with your finger and kinda press down on it so it sticks good. Turn upside down and shake the excess on a piece of paper. After the item dries, I had to go back and run my fingers over it too--the edges are fuzzy and you get some extra fluff still coming off. then you can use the paper (roll it up a bit) to help you get the extra flock back into the tube. It was really fun and so easy to do! You should try it!
By the way, your things are always great!!! I love everything you make!

I'm not in this swap, but I've been peeking now and again to see everyone's work. I just wanted to say that regardless of your own perceived "skill level," EVERYONE who joins each swap brings something to the table. Whether it's using a color scheme that I wouldn't have thought of, using a new technique, or just making a piece I just didn't think I could, I always enjoy seeing everyone's work.

Woo Hoo! I have finished all my groups. Here are my last 4. C, C1, G and H. The Santa Mickey has flock for all the snow and fur on the hat.
http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w234/hopemax/IMG_7240.jpg
And, everyone, don't feel intimidated. I think we are our own worst critics. My stuff isn't perfect. I can see all the misalignment when trying to do the SCAL paper piecings, and Tiana's eyes and mouth look a bit weird. But I am pretty sure, that once it is on a page, surrounded by photos and other embellishments, and in a page protector the so called "imperfections" will disappear.

Thanks everyone! :goodvibes The colors are much nicer in person... deeper browns overall.
I have another piece to share. This is for groups A and B. I noticed both groups had the same people, so I opted to make a boyish and a girlish element that went together - Peter Pan and Wendy. I have had a plan in my head for my scrap page, so I just used this swap to make the elements... and now I can share! I also included the clock tower as Peter and Wendy are smaller than the 4 inch requirement (they are a little less then 3.5 inches long).
http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/8622/peterpanc.jpg
I hope combining the two was okay! :goodvibes Again, looks much nicer in person!
Oh, and what time should the clock tower have on it? Or should I leave it empty?
hopemax
09-13-2010, 10:10 PM
Very cute. Since both groups have the same people, combining is fine.
As for the time, it's between 8:14 and 8:15 when they land on it.

Before my parents got their house, they used to go to the PO on Turkey Lake Rd. Don't know how familiar with the roads you are yet, but if you take Palm Pkwy east, it turns into Turkey Lake. It's the road that parallels I-4. I think there is one closer, but that was the one my Mom found most convenient.

The closest PO I have found to Disney was off Apoka Vineland. If you head down from DTD and then turn left onto Apoka Vineland it was up that way about the same distance as the Publix, but it wasn't on that road you had to turn right on another road and go down to a shopping center.

Hope - I have a small problem...while we were away, my mom left the dogs out when she was not home. Our Boston Terrier seems to like to eat two things...the toes out of my shoes and scrappy stuff. She chewed a hole in the box and destroyed 4 of the sets I made. I am going to re-cut them and re-assemble them. I will be sure to get them complete today. If I get them done fast enough, Iwill mail them as planned today. If not, I will definitely get them out tomorrow priority with DC. I have to unpack, do laundry and run DS's project to school. So, there are some other things that may keep me busy today also. Sorry for the slight delay...I should have just forced myself last week. I will let you know my status again later today.
