I"m pretty excited, I got my first real camera, a Canon Rebel with the standard lens... I'm going to buy a 50mm lens so I can get the blur effect (again, newbie here, but goin on what I've been told)...
So...any advice on using this camera?? Special or easy features I need to know before diving into the book?

What book did you get???? (unless you mean the manual :confused3 ) If anything, just dive right in. If it's not the manual, the book will probably give you ideas of what to do.

The 50mm f/1.8 is a great lens to have in your bag.. especially if you're an available light shooter. But not necessary to get a shallow depth of field.
by the book, I'm guessing you mean the manual... it might not make a lot of sense to you unless you understand the basic principles of photography. If it doesn't, look for a book that explains how shutter speed, aperture, ISO and light work together to make the exposure.
I like Photography by Upton and London (it's a textbook, buy an older used edition for less than $10 if you go that route) and a lot of people like Understanding Exposure by Bryan Patterson.

The box should have had both English and Spanish. And as mentioned before you cant go wrong with Understanding Exposure by Bryan Patterson
