Of course, WE are not so barbaric in our use of Capital Punishment............................unless one views the execution of another human life as a form of barbarism. If so, then we are no better...........................

FUNTUA, Nigeria (Reuters) -- An Islamic court in northern Nigeria ruled on Monday that a young woman must face death by stoning according to Muslim law for having a child outside marriage.

The decision, upholding a verdict by a lower court, looks set to re-ignite international outrage against Nigeria and could stoke sectarian tensions in the country's largely Muslim north.

"If one can be sentenced to death for fornication then it makes nonsense of our democracy," said Innocent Chukwuma of the Centre for Law Enforcement Education, a Lagos-based legal rights pressure group.

"The majority of Nigerians should be sentenced to death by such a ruling."

The judge said the stoning would not be carried out until Amina Lawal Kurami, 31, had weaned her eight-month-old daughter Wasila, which may not be for another two years.

Holding the baby in her arms, Kurami remained calm as the verdict was announced and was quickly whisked away by her lawyers who said they would appeal against the decision.

"We hereby uphold the judgment of the (lower) Bakori sharia court that decreed that you be sentenced to death by stoning," said court president Abdullahi Aliyu Katsina, to chants of "Allahu Akbar" (God is Greater) from the largely male audience.

Kurami was sentenced to death in March by a lower court in her state of Katsina, which like a number of others in northern Nigeria has adopted Islamic sharia law.

In June, a regional appeals court in Funtua gave her a two-year reprieve to wean her child.

Kurami is the second woman to be sentenced to death for bearing a child outside marriage since 2000, when the first of about a dozen states adopted the strict sharia code.

When did we start sentencing women to death or executing women for having children outside of marriage?

They have their laws..we have ours......Why worry what other countries do? It doesn't effect us here does it? Yes we have the death penalty.....but it isn't inforced unless another life is taken....

Get off your soapbox Eros...we have all heard this junk from you in the past. Maybe you should move to one of those "other places" and see if maybe you can start somekind of movement against their laws..... But watch out for rocks!

Wow that as a bit strong. Sorry but I think it does effect us. Wonder what would have happened if we had ignored the holocaust (or for longer than we did) and just said it was their laws?

Wendy - It comes from a looooooonnnnnnnngggggggg history of soapbox posts - I see you've been registered for awhile - Haven't you noticed the redundancy of moral outrage?

Wendy...I didn't say what is going to happen to this woman wasn't terrible because it is.....Leoat made my point for me.....EROS scans the news for things that he can post to "let everybody know ONCE AGAIN of his views " on certain issues that hit the nerves of very many folks here.....Frankly...I'm tired of it...

Personally, I like Snow Caps with popcorn. The show here has stopped selling them for some reason, so I bring them from outside the theater.

Tony, if you are tired of it, I would suggest you not read it. No one makes you.

EROS, this woman didn't kill anyone or harm another human being. She created a life, she didn't take one. Therein lies the difference for me.

Hijacking a thread because you don't like the poster is not only juvenile, it is just rude. Grow up people. The popcorn thing is "another board's" way of ignoring people. We don't do that here and if you find your posts gone, you will know why.

I'm sorry CC....I have had so many of my posts brought in a different direction that I thought it was ok...I will not do it again.

Really Donna? I haven't seen this kind of behaviour on any of your threads. Had I seen it, I would have reacted the same.

Maybe you should see the one where I posted how concerned I was that in the middle of a children's playground a group of Wiccans held a ceremony and this very thing was done to me and I was told to toughen up or stop playing.

And MOST posts where people attempt to share their COMMON religious beliefs are attacked and are put down....

BTW...I am against the death penalty. I agree with EROS.

I agree.
(I'm not so sure our justice system is as up to the task as it should be but that is another thread.)
2)unless one views the execution of another human life as a form of barbarism.
I don't so I deleted the rest.

This event is indeed tragic. I beleive the death penalty should only be used to remove a dangerous criminal from our society to prevent others being placed at risk in the future. This case does not come close meet that criteria.

As for Eros' soapbox, he is not attacking those who beleive differently, nor is he hijacking another thread to insert his opinion, so I don't see a problem. I may be a little tired of hearing the message, but I am sure there are lots of people who tire of hearing my occasional diatribes.

Actually, while not intending to soapbox this, I think it does affect us. This type of "justice" is the same logic that gave us September 11th and turning our eyes from it does not lessen the impact on humanity.

While it is not desirable for any child to be born out of wedlock, no one has said under what circumstances the child was conceived. This may not have been a situation born out of love but force.

By the way, I didn't notice any mention of stoning the father.

Hmmmm, I'm confused - I was pretty sure I saw alot of posts get hijacked - I never knew it was a board policy to avoid hijacking....Guess I should pay more attention to the other threads that seemed to get off track, I must have been missing some cross-reference or nuance.....

Careful Goofy...stay within the guidelines.....I'd like him to answer that question too....Just to clarify.......while what goes on in other countires concerning the way they carry out penalties handed out by their governments does bother me ......I don't make issues out of them for self gratification and "other" reasons.... The point has been made OVER AND OVER AGAIN.....and when someone dies I don't feel it right to ask "Where is or was your God" during this time. THAT question has been asked by eros many times. But I guess as long as it is viewed as within board guidelines ,no matter how insensitive it is, was OK...I don't get it..Or maybe I do...

Noone should be stoned to death...for anything ......But it is the way THEY do things. The United States CAN NOT be compared to these places because we have a death penalty that is a POSSIBLITY of sentence for a horrible crime that is comitted.

Well the guidelines exist as the Owner of the site wrote them, we enforce them. This one is going no where so we are done.
