Girl Kidnapped from Bedroom in Midvale
An 11-year-old girl is in critical condition this morning after a man raped and beat her in her Midvale backyard last night.
Police are questioning a man they say raped and beat an 11-year-old girl early Monday morning after kidnapping her from the bedroom she shared with her 10-year-old brother.
Midvale Police Sgt. John Salazar said the 28-year-old suspect from Utah is an acquaintance of the girl's father. "I don't know how deep the acquaintance is, but they know each other," Salazar said.
The girl was in critical condition at Primary Children's Medical Center on Monday morning.
Salazar said the man broke into the Midvale home about 1:30 a.m. He entered the children's bedroom, allegedly asking the girl's brother where his father slept. He then kidnapped the girl.
"He didn't have a gun," Salazar said. "The little boy didn't feel threatened."
A neighbor called police at 1:42 a.m., reportedly hearing moaning outside. Salazar said two police officers searched the area by car and didn't see or hear anything. They looked around yards, and came upon the girl as she was being beaten in her backyard with a hammer or other blunt object.
"I believe they saved her life," Salazar said. The suspect allegedly ran several blocks toward his car after officers shone flashlights on him. He was stopped by a police dog about two blocks from the girl's home.
The suspect suffered puncture wounds from the dog, but didn't need medical treatment, Salazar said. He is being questioned by police.
Salazar said he didn't know of any connection between the suspect and the kidnapping of 14-year-old Elizabeth Smart, abducted in June from a bedroom she shared with her 9-year-old sister. Smart has not been found.

This poor little girl had 9 hrs. of surgery today. Doctors said its an hour by hour situation, she is that unstable. They have never seen a beating as brutal as this on a child. Every bone in the center of her face is broken. I almost wonder if it wouldn't be more merciful if she didn't make it. I just can't imagine her suffering but hopefully the hospital is able to keep most of her pain away.
The person who did this was a high school friend of the father. They had just rekindled their friendship recently. This man says he has no memory of the incident (yeah right). He was also charged with rape about 8 years ago.
