I am going to try and put my 7 1/2 yr old in the 5-7 group when we cruise, BUT she was NOT happy there last year when she was 6 1/2.
So what I'm asking is what grade are your 8 yr olds in? My daughter will be in 2nd grade when we cruise. So if I HAVE to bump her up, I would like to know if there will be other 2nd graders in the 8-9 group. I know all school districts have different cut off dates.
Thanks
Joanna

My current 9 year old is going in to 5th grade, but he's a year ahead in school. He was in 4th grade when he was 8.
I am going to try to get him into the 10-12 year old group when we go in Oct. Even though he will still be 9. All his classmates in school are 10.
Hope this helps!

Third grade for my 8 year old.
My 8-year-old daughter just started 3rd grade, and my 9-year-old son just started 5th grade. DD has a Jan. birthdate, so is a few months older than some of her classmates. DS will be 10 in Oct., and is several months younger than his classmates. I wish you luck in making a club change. I was told it was rather hard to do.

my current nine year old is going into 5th grade, but he will turn ten about two weeks and a half weeks before school starts. He just made the cutoff for age when starting school...

We have not sailed yet (only 13 days to go...YEAH!!), so I can't say for certain, but......
According to the Children's Program guidelines, you may not have a choice. The guidelines state that a child may participate in an older group if they are within a month of their birthday. So, if a 7 year old wants to be with 8-9 group, they would have to be a month away from turning 8.
Not sure if that's a hard and fast rule, but I wouldn't be surprised if it is enforced.

My DD is 7 and just started 2nd Grade today :( (miss her lol). The cutoff here is Sept. 15th and her Birthday is Sept. 21st so she missed it by 6 days. She turns 8 on the day we depart and I am going to put her in the 8-9 year olds.
My son turned 8 three weeks ago and he just started 3rd grade today.

My DD is 7,going on 8 is in the 2nd grade and started TODAY. Man, how is there a 8 year old in 5TH or even 4TH grade? Are they geniuses? I thought MY girl was smart. She's been reading since 4 years old, but FIFTH grade?? Wow..

My daughter is 9 (turning 10 in Oct, one of the oldest in her class) and has just started 4th grade. If we lived in NY she would be in 5th grade as their cut off is Dec 1st and ours is Sept 1st.
Anyway, she turned 8 in Oct of 2nd grade but was one of the oldest. Most kids in Fl turn 8 at the end of 2nd grade. You need to 8 by Sept 1st for 3rd grade.

Like Cindy_K, my dd skipped a grade - was in 4th grade when she was 8. She's 9 in the 5th grade. I fed her lots of Mensa cereal when she was a baby ;) . She hated being in the 8-9 group, though she loved the lab (mostly hung out with the counselors - they were soooo sweet to her), but the 10-12's looked so big to me! However, if I were you, I would at least give it a shot to move her up. She may have a better time with the older ones. Since you already know she doesn't want to be with the 5-7's, it's definitely worth a shot. I didn't try to move my dd up because I went by what I saw in the lab - my dd is very petite (not a great mix for being so young in the 5th grade either :( - she handles it well, though)

Thanks everyone for all your help. My DD is now 6 1/2 and starts 2nd grade next week. We will be cruising in May and she will be
7 1/2 by then and at the END of 2nd grade getting ready for 3rd grade. I will play it by ear. But now that I realize she will be done with 2nd grade and ready for 3rd, I won't think twice about bumping her if she refuses to go to the 5-7 club.
Thanks Again for all your responses

My DD has a June b-day, is now 8, and will be in 3rd grade this year. She is usually one of the younger ones in her class.

Our cut off is Dec 1st so that would make my daughter in 4th grade when she is 8 since her brthday is in Nov. if I don't hold her back for the 1st year. She would only be 4 in kindergarten so I may keep her back for one year.

Aprigail...Our cutoff is also Dec.1st. But they turn 5 in November when they are in Kindergarten. So in 4th grade she will turn 9 in the beginning of the school year. My DD also has November birthday. She will be turning 7 in November and will be in 2nd grade. 71/2 by the time we cruise. but very mature for her age and she always tries to keep up with her older sister 10. I think thats why she didn't like the 5-7 club, but in May I'll try it again and if she gives me a hard time, I'll try to bump her up.

Ok, So maybe THAT is what the deal is.. I see alot of you live in places where the cut-off date is DECEMBER?? In Texas, it's September 1st... So, that is why my DD is in 2nd grade and is 7, turning 8. BUT< I must say, she is in private school, and is like 2 years ahead of the public schools! At least she isn't really "behind" at all...
