Hello everyone!

For those new to us, we are a group of people who are planning to participate in walking/running events throughout the year. For most of us, the ultimate goal is to train and compete in the annual WDW Half/Full marathons. We'll also be posting news and training for various other events throughout the year. We range from beginners to triathletes. Come join us, whether you're training for an event or walking/running for fitness.

New WISH Team members. If you read one thing over and over, believe this. Being part of this team is fantastic. Part of the ride you get for the event is what I call the roller coaster. There will be lots of ups and downs. The more you post here, the more you will find yourself enjoying the ride. It is an incredible journey. Don't be afraid, shy or whatever to come here and just post up anything. You don't have to know us right away, or all of us at all. You will get to know some of us. It makes the event you are enjoying have MORE meaning and we love to have you.

:)

I started the month with a long run-71/4 miles. I got up early yesterday morning to beat the heat and am so glad I did. Training for the DL 1/2 in the heat is a new experience for me, but I have trained on a TM for the Princess 1/2 so I can do this.
I start PT for my thumb next week-tore both ligaments 6 weeks ago.:scared:
Hope everyone has a great month and Happy Independence Day to all our American WISHERS!

Hi Wishers! I have been so busy with work and I haven't really been on the boards too much, but I'm back! I'm training with TNT (non-fundraising mentor) for the Philly RnR, I'll be doing the W&D two weeks later, I need to sign up for the Philly half (in November) and I just signed up with TNT as a teammate for the WDW marathon.

Whew!

I need to find some 5K or 10K races to take part in over the summer. Something for me to focus on getting faster.

How's everyone else doing?

Can I join? I picked up running/walking in Jan to train for the Princess, but am now addicted.

Currently training for the Chicago RnR half marathon, on August 1st...

Megan You go girls-I can't think about multiple races at once-mqybe it's my age

Hockeykat Don't you love these cool mornings-the humidity is so low!

I went out early this morning and ran 8 miles-my right knee was being weird, but hope that I can get that under control.

Joan - I don't think it's possible to beat the heat this summer. It finds you no matter when and where you run. But it's probably a good idea to train for DL outside, based on the past couple of years. It's been pretty hot out there! Good luck with the PT.

Megan - You have a BUSY schedule! :worship: I wanted to try to do the Philly RnR, but at this point I don't think it's going to happen. We may try to squeeze in the new Hershey half in October, but that may be my only race before MCM.

Kat - :welcome: We won't be hijacking this thread quite so much if we chat about our local group! Chicago is an early race, so you don't have long to wait.

I'm sidelined with a hip injury, and don't know exactly how long it's going to be before I can run. I've been looking at my training schedule for MCM tonight and revising the long runs to see if I can get most of them in, assuming I can start back by the end of the month (and assuming that I can still do 10 miles comfortably when I resume!)

Hope the knee is okay! Mine was twinging a bit during the long run Sat but seems to be fine now.

You know, I did my short run inside yesterday. I can only drag myself out of bed once a week (for the long run), and it's just too hot by the afternoon.

I have been trying to do tempo/speed work during the week, and I like the A/C environment for that!

Awesome! I am finding you everywhere lately. :goodvibes

Okay, stupid question alert... what is MCM? Marine Corps?

Yup, 3 more weeks of training before Chicago. I am likely doing 12, 14, then maybe 8. I haven't decided that last one. The Raleigh Galloway group seems to always do 10, but I think you can double back early? I think I mentioned that I just joined them this year...

Today was a cross training day. 10 min on the spin bike, 20 on the elliptical, and an hour of Pilates.

Right now my workout schedule is 2-3 days pilates or yoga, 2 short runs (3 miles), 1 long run, and 2 days of 30 minutes minimum of cross-training.

Any suggestions on other cross training activities? I have tried the spin bike twice now and I think I hate it. The elliptical is okay, I guess. Swimming laps is boring. H20 Aerobics, I am rather afraid.

One day a week most weeks is ice hockey, so I really only need one other day.

mla1977

Kat - Yup, MCM is Marine Corps Marathon. I have some teammates doing that this year.

Joan - Take it easy on the knee. Mine didn't feel quite right last night. Just achy and not 100%, but nothing too bad

Jackie - I hope the hip feels better! I'm not in any shape for MCM and probably won't be for a while, but I would love to try to do it some time. I went to college in DC so that would be a good reason for me to go back there.

As for me - I got in a very comfortable 3 miles last night. At the gym, there was no way I was running outside in the oven that is the Northeast.

I was also considering doing the Nike Women's half this year. I have the option to travel with TNT as a mentor and I would only have to pay for the cost of the weekend. Unfortunately, I don't think the finances are there for me. I'll be doing it next year for sure!

Cool mornings? What are those? We haven't seen cool here since early May, and probably have another two or three months to go before we see it again. ;)

I grew up in California and then moved East...the humidity kills me. This past week it has been hot, but the humidity has been very low. If I'm out before 6am I find the weather very nice. I don't like the cold-I trained for the Princess Half-all indoors on the TM-doing 8, 9, 10 mile long runs.
This morning was more humid, but it was a walk day.

I think it is actually hotter north of DC right now and I have heard that Southern Ca has been very nice recently.

Maybe we could all move to Colorado-I was hiking in the RM National Park a few weeks ago and it was absolutely beautiful...mornings of 50 days of 70's and NO humidity.

Good grief. I looked at my training calendar and my plan for the WDW full started LAST WEEK! How can that be!?

I'm doing the Kansas City half marathon in October. I might pick up some other races this fall.

I wish we had a Galloway group in Kansas City. I've never trained in a group and would like to try it. Unless it's frostbite cold I run in the mornings.

I'll be doing four miles tomorrow morning. It will not rain. I repeat. It will not rain.

Wow Ronda! I still am so excited you are doing the full!

The Raleigh Galloway group is one of the largest training groups in the country, actually. We are now up to over 450 members.

We break into pace groups, of course, from 7mm to 15mm. I am rather a back-of-the-packer, with the 12 min group. I may switch to the 11:30 or 11 min group after the Aug 1 half, but for right now I am just trying to get in mileage and not get hurt.

Jackie and I realized in another thread that we are part of the same group. :goodvibes

I saw your small world connection in the run in the morning thread. I think staying at 12:00 is smart. Don't get hurt. It's been fun to watch you come over to the dark side. I love what running does for me.

On the full, I figured I want to do one and I get older every year. Do it now. I don't think the full will fill. I can wait until Thanksgiving to pull the registration trigger. The first 20 miler is that weekend. If I survive that, I'm in!

Four miles this morning. Through the hilly park. Whee!!

The thermometer says 89 with a heat index of 94 right now. I have softball tonight so I am going to get my run in first. I have a feeling that all the energy will be leaving through my sweat glands as opposed to my legs. Hope everyone else is holding up in the heat.

Let's see if I can get in on the monthly thread for more than one post....:goodvibes

Joan: So impressed that you're getting those miles in with this heat! :thumbsup2 And in the oven that Megan refers to, complete with humidity. :lmao: Just call us all Easy Bake. If we were only cookies, we'd be moist and not sweaty. :upsidedow

Megan: Congrats on being a TNT mentor and then a teammate in January. So very cool! I always root for the purple on the course, and now I have an extra-special reason. I didn't know you were doing W&D. I'll be there for the International F & W, but don't think I'm doing the half.

Kat: I saw you at the Princess & you looked fabulous! And whoo hoo for Chicago. That race has tons of course/spectator support! I just looked at your WO schedule & you've got an excellent balance of activities, including the much-needed XT that I tend to ignore. Sometimes I do envy the Galloway group, the camaraderie, the motivation.

Jackie: Oh, I do hope you can start back by the end of the month. I'm sure your chiro has magic fingers (in a non-creepy, non-lewd way).

Ronda: Good grief is right, Ronda! Your WDW full plan started? I haven't even signed up yet! Arrrrrghhhhh! (I comfort myself that I'm just doing the half this year.) P.S. Did it rain?

Frank: Oh, wow. I hope you take it easy with the softball – especially following the run. I can't even imagine you as anything less than energetic.

As for me: I've been on the road somewhat this summer – including a 4th of July family reunion with the ILs. The reason I bring it up is to say that I had the lovely opportunity to run near Rochester, NY (we have some WISHers near there, but I didn't try to get in touch because of the reunion schedule). I was able to run on the Canal Trail (Erie Canal), Anna Trail, and by the University of Rochester. Lovely views, shaded areas, gentle rolling hills. If any of you get an opportunity to do so, definitely take advantage of it! I even saw a white-tailed doe one morning. :cloud9:

Thanks!! I have been working my *** off lately... rather literally, as I have lost almost 15 lbs since I started training again in late May, 37 on the year. 1200 cals with an every other week splurge night.

I met you at the Princess? That weekend was crazy...

I am loving the camamraderie of the Galloway group. I get a lot of alone time in my work and life, so I think that I may be why I gravitate more toward social activities when it comes to exercise.

Okay, today. 3.7 miles. .6 was walk for warmup/cooldown.

The 5K though... best time yet! 34:03, 33:04 on the 3mile mark. My first mile was 10:48 and it was 5/1 (so only one minute walking). This is a full minute better than my best mile as of Jun 1.

Tomorrow, rest day!!
So, I am pretty happy. :)

Actually I meant volleyball, oops. I decided to wait until later and go out after the game when it is dark and cooler. I had a feeling it would not go very well and I need to get in a little longer run so I'll sacrifice a little sleep.

Of course when LeBron announces he is leaving later tonight (at least I hope so) Cleveland might have a mushroom cloud over it so who knows. :lmao:

Joan - It's eerie that it's hotter up north than it is here. And thank goodness that the humidity has stayed low. If we were having our normal summer humid days, we'd all be dead now.

Ronda - I tell new members every year that I wouldn't still be running if it weren't for the group. I need the camaraderie of the group to get through the long runs. And it's really, really hard to turn off the clock on Saturday morning when a) I've paid to join, and b) I have friends waiting to run with me. I've made some great friends through our local group. And like Kat said, we're the largest in the country. Our leader tells us that some of our pace groups are larger than some entire groups.

Debra - Magic fingers, maybe. Painful ones, definitely. I remember when I was seeing him for active release to treat my plantar fasciitis, that I would ask him why I paid him to hurt me so much. It's much the same now! I also have my physical on Monday, so I'm going to discuss all of this with my family doctor and get her opinion.

Kat - Great times on your run today! You could definitely move up at least one group, but like Ronda said, you don't have to. The pace of the long run, especially as the mileage increases, doesn't matter so much. Finishing it comfortably and being able to function the rest of the day does. My running buddy and I are reserving the right to drop back to the 11:30 once we get to 16 or so miles. Sometimes it's more about the interval than the pace.

I told my coworkers as we were leaving the office today that if I'm going to be injured, now is a good time. It was nice to come home and sit in the air-conditioned house while DH went out and ran 4 miles. I just hope I don't get too accustomed to the easy life! Saturday morning I'm hoping to get up early (not Galloway early, mind you, since I'd have to be up by 5:15 to make the run this week) and go to the Farmer's Market. If I can't run, I may as well eat well. And I need something to be excited about! :thumbsup2

Kat - Welcome. I equate the spinning bike to the treadmill, I hate them both but deal when I have to. I would say get a bike and get outside. Swimming laps, while boring, is the best crosstraining in my opinion. It is low impact, uses a lot of different muscle groups, and is good cardio. Doing some weight training is also an option.

Jackie- Hope the hip feels better soon.

Ronda- I haven't even thought about the marathon training yet.

Deb- I love running on vacation and try to find at least a 5K everywhere I go. I am going to be in Point Pleasant Beach, NJ for a wedding the last weekend of July and there isn't any race close. I'm used to there being 4 or 5 to choose from on any given weekend. I'll have to settle for some early morning runs on the beach I guess.

Waiting until after volleyball was a smart choice. I went out right at midnight and the temp dropped to 76. I'll take it.

I plotted the Galloway "to finish" plan earlier this year. At 32 weeks long it starts the first week of JULY! My current mileage is closer to week six or seven, but I'll take the checkmarks just the same.

Nope. No rain. I was so wet I wouldn't have minded.

Kat - you are really gaining speed! Speaking of rock your race - Chicago will be so fun!

It's just too hot out here for anything outside... maybe in the fall.

I was considering H20 Aerobics, but not too sure. Swimming laps is roughly like watching paint dry, unfortunately.

Does Pilates/Yoga count as cross training?

I'm doing a mix. The race will be run/walk. Either 5/1 or 3/1. My long runs are currently 5/1. My hilly run is 3/1 and the flat (4 miles) is run/run. I'm using the Galloway mileage - mostly. I posted a month or so ago and wanting to work in the local half. Charles made some suggestions. I changed a few weeks and top out at 23.

I'd put Pilates in the cross training category. Anything that hard has to get credit!

Cool! The local Galloway group has the WDW full folks doing 26, but not until Dec 4th. They have halfers going to 14 though.

You know, every time they say "grow taller" in Pilates I think of you and your comments about that!! It always makes me want to say, but I don't *want* to grow taller...

I wonder if it actually does make you appear taller at all, though? :confused3

Hi all.....

July is going quickly, training is hot, and it looks like Alberto Contador will win the Touur de France. So which of the above things is a good thing? (The correct answer is: None!)

Kudos to all who are training in the heat. I keep telling myself that if I can run in the heat--even slowly--then I will be able to run better in the cool. My marathon training plan has me running my LR at specific pace--which I am terrible at, even with my new Garmin! And there are 5 :scared1: 20-mile runs. We'll see how it goes.

If anyone has any good "how to beat blisters on the side of the ball of your foot (side of base of big toe)", I'd like to hear. Body glide, socks, new shoes haven't donet he trick. Next up--tape.

Maura Bandaid brand makes a product for blisters...I have used it in the past, not recently and I thought it was very good. Sort of like a band-aid, but specifically for blisters.

Weather is hot and humid and I'm training mostly outside for the DL half. Long runs I get up at 5 have half a banana and some juice, stretch and out by 5:45am. I'm doing some of my "speed" work on the TM.

Wow! this month is going so fast.

Tiger thanks for the Pilates/Yoga info. I have to admit I have been skipping it some lately, as something had to give in my workout schedule over the last week or two (work trying to kill me).

I concur completely on the brutal weather. I did 14 miles last Saturday and it was just plain awful. I wish my running group would push the start time back from 6:30 to 6.

Taper now, though, and the Chicago RnR half is a week from Sunday!

ABSOLUTELY! Sat there holding my breath last night watching the morning coverage hoping that at least Lance would win the stage, so I'd have something to be happy about, but alas... :sad2: On a fun note, one of my Galloway leaders is in France. Sunday he actually got to run alongside Lance on the climb up Port du Pailheres. We saw him on tv!

Joan - Good for you for starting so early. This has to be the most miserable summer on record!

Kat - Hate that I missed that 14 miler - NOT! I can't even imagine what this Saturday's run will be like. :woohoo: for taper. Good luck in Chicago, if I don't see you before then.

Still injured. See the chiro again tomorrow for a reevaluation, and then he's going to send me on to an ortho. What we're doing isn't working, and I'm beginning to panic. I have 3 months until Marine Corps, and should have been with Kat on that 14 miler last Saturday. I have to admit I'm not missing running in this heat, but I do miss running!

Starting at 6:00 doesn't help Kat. It was 80 at 6:00 a.m. yesterday. Just plain awful. More of the same tomorrow. I need to remember the heat is real. I feel miserable and slow and think I'm having a bad run. It's the heat dummy.

I thought about your 14 miler last weekend. Ha, ha, 14 miler. Say it a few times. You ran a 14 miler and it wasn't even for a medal. Amazing aren't you!?

Kat - How's your taper going?

Yeah, I know. Crazy, aren't I? :upsidedow

You are right about the 6 vs 6:30. The temp wasn't that different and the humidity here is actually worse, the earlier it is.

Taper... I did my last tempo short run yesterday. Tomorrow is an easy either 2 or 3 miler, I will do the 10 with the group on Sat but maybe with the slower pace group and in 1/1s, and then next week I am going to do an easy short run on Tues and nothing else until race day.

I am not sure about Sat though... should I do 10, or should I go shorter? We train slow.

Jackie, sorry to hear about the injury. Hope that they find the solution soon!

Just popping in after my 20 mile LR--which actually turned out to be 20.35 according to Garmin. I noticed at a few spots on my route that the AutoPause feature kicked in while I was still running. Two-fold bummer! 'Cause first--I wasn't running THAT slowly! and second--that distance wasn't showing on my display.

Anyway, it's done (last 5 miles were tough and slow) and I am drinking my chocolate milk in a very Homer-like fashion (mmmmm, chocolate milk....drool)

I got my LR in today-9 miles. DS (17) said he would go with me. I wasn't sure, but he got up at 5:25 and we were out by 5:40. He fell in behind me and never asked how far we had run..with 100 meters left, I let him know it was almost over...9:40 pace--not bad. Of course not to be out done by Mom, he continued to run about another mile and met me at home for some hydration and stretching.

The last two days have been in the low 70's once the sun set so the runs have been much more pleasant. I have a wedding in NJ this weekend and plan on doing some running along the beach, probably not on the sand though.

I am not sure if anyone is considering the RnR half in VA beach but I have a discount code that is good for $25 off and expires on 7/31. It is ROLLBACK.

Keep up the good work everyone, cooler weather will be here soon.

Kat - Good luck SUnday!!!!!!! Have fun! Are you meeitng up with any of the other WISHers?

Carrie - Good luck on Sunday! You continue to amaze me!

Kat - Wouldn't 70's be wonderful? It'd be worth running in the middle of the night if it would actually cool down.

Maura - Can you run some miles for me?

Joan - Nice pace! And yes, this is a wonderful time for a rest period. I told our group director tonight that if I were going to be injured, I picked a really, really good time. Hottest summer on record. UGH!

Frank - One year I'm going to do Va Beach. This is not the year.

I finally got the long-awaited call tonight from the MRI clinic, and missed it. I find out tomorrow when I get to have the MRI to determine what exactly is going on inside my hip. Then we'll decide if, and when, I get to run again this season. And if I have an entry for MCM available. :sad1:
