Happy July! :wizard:
Ran a beautiful 4M last night in the park. What a difference 63 degrees is from 87!
Races scheduled this month for me:
Glen Rock 9/11 Tribute 5k - July 5th (my first 5k)
NYRR Dash & Splash 10k - July 10th
Central Park Conservatory 4M - July 17th

Hey, so I'm new! Got pointed over here a few days ago, then had some computer problems and didn't visit! So glad to have a group to join!
I'm Megan, 29, from the D.C. area. Running my first half at Disneyland. Trained up to run Princess this spring, then got the stomach flu the day before the race! Definitely a disappointment. So I'm excited to be running my first soon. I'm also running Wine & Dine the following month.
I started running a few years ago to try to lose weight. It hasn't worked, but I'm still trying!
(Also, how is it already July???)

amy I agree running the past few days has been beautiful and so enjoyable. Your upcoming races sound like fun. Good luck
Megan- :welcome: to our team. I cant believe you got sick the day before the race. thats so sad I bet that was really disappointing after putting in the hard work. I would be devistated. My plan is to run the disney princess this year as my first 1/2. Maybe I will see you there.
Your dl trip is right around the corner, good luck with your training.
My goal when starting WW and running at the beginning of may was to loose 20lbs by my vacation. We leave early saturday morning and today is my last work day so I weighed in today (since I use our office scale) and Im at 195.6 which = 19.4lbs lost. I am excited and proud that I got close and maybe if I would run tonight and come in tomorrow and weigh myself I just might hit it but I am not that obsessive so I will just let it go. I am hoping I can continue eating well while on vacation and that when I return I will be at 20+lbs lost. This would be a miracle considering its usually vacations that throw me off the wagon. I really am going to try hard!!!!
Enjoy your day team. I hope its as beautiful where you are as it is here:cloud9:

I WAS devastated! I cried and cried. And I could hear the fireworks at the start from my hotel room and I was just so upset. Plus I was sick. It was the most miserable I've been in a long time. But it just wasn't meant to be.
Excellent work on the weight loss! My goal has been to get down to my goal weight by my 30th birthday (in January). I started this plan in January. Since then, I'm up 3-4 pounds. UGH. I've got about 17 lbs to lose, and I am just failing miserably. I need to figure out why I'm self sabotaging and STOP.

Amy- glad you are having some cooler weather. It sure makes the miles easier! And wow! You are going to have a busy month. GL this weekend in your 5k. Don't you just love races at new distances, automatic PR:).
Megan - welcome to our group!! I hope your races this fall go better than princess did.
Lindsay- woo hoo on the fabulous wieght loss! Have fun on vacation!!!
I had a great run tonight. I decided to bite the bullet and rush up to my mom's house after DS's swim lessons so I could drop off the kids and run the bridges with my running group. It was a perfect night for it, we have a "cold snap" on mid-eighties weather and it was drizzling the whole run so we were wet, but not roasting like it has been. I felt energized and had a great 7 miles.
Tomorrow is going to be such a fun day. We are taking DS to Toy Story 3 and then going to the fireworks at World Golf Village in St Augustine. I just love Fourth of July weekend. Plus DH has a 4 day weekend. Yay!
Happy 4th of July everyone!

Just start one day at a time. Its just a matter of getting your mind ready to do it. I self sabotaged myself for years on/off, hence the wt issue but I have finally got my mind ready and so far it seems to be working. You will get there too. Have a goal will help. When is your bday? mine is 1/18. I turned 30 in 2009! I wanted to be thin by my 30th but that was not a big enough motivator for me. The princess half so far has been the best motivator yet!

My birthday is 1/10. So I've got six months. Maybe I won't get all the way to my goal, but if I could at least end the year thinner than I started, I think that would be a good goal. I'm hoping training for races will help as well. I put on a bunch of weight after my missed race and then during May, which was pretty much a month of health scares that all turned out to be nothing. Definitely emotional eating.

Happy July INCREDIBLES!
I feel like June went by and I totally checked out! It was a VERY busy month in this household. We've had swim meets, waterpolo, my work, my husband's work, my boys work....and my 15 yr old isn't driving yet so that means I get to play taxi cab driver for everything he needs to do :rotfl:. I'm certainly hoping July isn't quite as busy...but somehow I think it is going to be. I think it all seems to be flying by because my oldest will be leaving for college at the 1st of August....that will be a very sad, but happy day for me.
My training in the month of June also suffered. I got a stomach bug in the middle of June and it held on for about a week :sad2: I didn't think I was ever going to get past it! But finally I'm back to short training runs and it has been so hot (like triple digits) that I'm having to run in the mornings before work and I'm only able to get about 3 miles in....but I guess better than nothing.
So, with very little training and only doing the 3 miles, I am signed up for the Folsom Firecracker 10k in the morning. My youngest son is doing it with me so he can get in a timed 10k run before the DL half. When I signed him up all he'd done was a 5k so that would mean without an official time he'd be in the last corral and I want him to be able to start with me....and I don't want to move to the last corral! So keep fingers crossed for a good run for him.....For me, I'm just hoping to be able to run the 6.2 miles....I'm not really worried about how fast this run.
Oh, I forgot to say :welcome:to our new members!
I haven't went back and read all of the posts for June yet but I did want to check-in before I blink and July is over :lmao:
I hope everyone has a wonderful & super safe July 4th!:beach:

How was your run this morning!?! Was it in Folsom or was it the Firecracker 10K in Land Park? I hope your son's run went well. I suspect that even if I were to run a 10K in time to have an official time for the DL Half, I'd still end up in the last corral! :lmao:
Actually, I think I might use our team here as my sounding board for my runs and times as I move myself through Hal Higdon's Novice Half Marathon program. I think it will help keep me honest about keeping up on my runs and might (just maybe) provide some relief for those people who keep thinking they are slow runners. You know who you are. The ones who worry because they are "only" running a 12 minute mile. For myself, I'm thrilled when I run a 12 minute mile. I'm still mostly comfortable somewhere over around a 14 minute mile. :rolleyes1
I'm finishing up Week 4 on the HH plan (DH and I will have an extra week somewhere along the way where we can repeat). I did my run from last night this morning, so while today was supposed to be a rest day, I did my 3.5 miles at an average speed of 13:52/mile. I did it indoors on a treadmill since DH was at work and I had DDs with me.
Doing my long run on Sunday is going to be tricky since the day is pretty well filled with 4th of July events from morning to night. So, I'm trying to decide to do my 5 mile long run a) tomorrow (Saturday) morning -- even though I just ran 3.5 miles today, b) Sunday -- really early (ugh), or c) Monday morning.

If my run tomorrow goes anything like our run today it is not going to be pretty! Hopefully tomorrow morning at 8:00 won't be as warm as it was today at 11:00....and hopefully there will be plenty of people in front of me to scare off the snakes!! We saw one as we were running the trails today. Needless to say I DON'T like the snakes.....they scare me :scared1:

I hope everyone is having a great July 4th weekend! I'm sad to say that I won't be running for the next eight weeks. I have a stress fracture in my lower shin. I haven't been overtraining as far as number of runs per week (3), but I have been pushing myself in terms of trying to go faster. When I start back, I am going to take it easy and not worry about time until I have been running for at least a year, maybe more (I started in Jan 2010).
I am disappointed that I won't be able to run a 10K on Labor Day, but my ultimate goal is the Princess, so I have to get better to be able to train for that. The end of my eight weeks of rest coincides with the start of school, so that will work out wonderfully because it will be easier to train then anyway. I am going to do spin classes and yoga during my break, but nothing that will aggravate my leg. As far as weight loss is concerned, I am sure I will continue to lose, even without the running. I have my newly diagnosed reflux to thank for that. It's very easy to have self-control when food makes you feel bad. Of course, I think I would rather be 10 pounds heavier, happy, and eating hamburgers and hot dogs this weekend!
I'll still be around here to cheer everyone on. Good luck to everyone who is doing races this weekend!

Don't worry about how fast anyone else is going. You are the only one who can run your race, you do it at whatever pace you are comfortable at. I was once where you are, but 3 years of running and training have helped me get to where I am and continue on to where I want to go.

I hear you on the snakes, Yucko. I saw some deer today, a doe and 3 fawns crossed the road ahead of me. I don't mind most wildlife, but snakes and skunks are big on my not so fond of list. Good luck with your run and let us know how you do.

Oh sweetie, when it rains it pours! Don't try to start back until you are sure you are healed, it will only make things worse. And you have plenty of time before the Princess to heal, do some cross training and get back to your running. And hopefully things get better with your reflux and you make the adjustments you need to.
We are having a cookout today with family, no big thing. Just the usual hot dogs, hamburgers, potato and macaroni salad etc. I do tend to go overboard when I cook for these things, but I did try to rein myself in this time. Only made 2 salads and 2 desserts.:rolleyes1 But since I ran 9 miles this morning, I can indulge a little bit.
Hope everyone has a great holiday weekend and enjoys family, friends and fun!

I'm using Higdon's Novice plan too! I've used it before and I really like it. I wouldn't worry about your pace. When I run, I just always try to remember "All I need to do is keep a 16 minute mile pace."
I'm still debating whether or not to run today or push my run til tomorrow. I've actually been extending my weekend runs, since I had a bigger base built up when I started the plan, so I've scheduled myself for 6 miles today. I'll probably head out within the hour if I decide to go today.

Good Morning!:)
Hope everyone had a great 4th and weekend. If you have today off, good for you. If you have to work like me, well:sad2:
I am actually glad to be going to work today, as it keeps me on plan better than if I were home with DH and DD. And since the scale still keeps bouncing around the same numbers (up, then back down, no wait, back up again:headache:) I really can use all the help I can get. No running today, which is good since I have a bit of tenderness in my right ankle. Not sure why or from what, but a day of rest will definately help.
Humidity is back with a vengence here in NY, it will make running this week quite a challenge. Everyone stay well hydrate and go at cooler times to run if possible.
Keep up the good work friends, you are all INCREDIBLE!!

We had a very nice 4th, and I ran my first 5k today! I was hoping for anything under 30 minutes, as my last 3 mile race was 31:26, and my best split on a 10k was 30:06. I was very nervous, though, because the starting temp was 85.

Hello fellow incredibles!! It's been a busy and hectic couple weeks since school let out, getting into the new summer camp routine. Hope everyone enjoyed their Independance Day weekend. I'm trying to get my run/walks in, but only got out twice last week, but I did go this morning. My son usually rides his scooter along with me, but today he wanted to run/walk with me, but he sprints for a half a minute and then he stops to rest, so I ended up running up ahead of him and turning back and going behind him so I was moving even when he wasn't. I'll encourage him to use the scooter next time. That works pretty good. Now that the holiday is over, I want to get 3 runs in a week.
Actually, I think I might use our team here as my sounding board for my runs and times as I move myself through Hal Higdon's Novice Half Marathon program. For my first 5k, my speed was 13.57 min mile so I was psyched. I was thinking I want to increase my distance, and then worry about speed. I want to do the princess half withouth being swept, so I think to do longer runs, 5-6 at 14-15 min pace would be my first goal. This is such a great place to use as a sounding board about your runs, and it's so nice to have Vern and the others who've been running for a while to give us advice.

I ended up running the five mile "long run" this morning. And, yes, I had a tad bit of guilt yesterday! But, my DH, who pulls a few shifts a month in his "extracurricular profession" as a paramedic was working a night shift on Saturday night. He didn't end up getting back until I felt I would have been cutting it too close to get back and shower and make it over for a bike decorating party at a friend's house. Then it was on to the bike parade and a pool party and the day was well on it's way. I'll plan on doing my "short run" tomorrow night so I'll have about 36 hours recovery time.
I'm using Higdon's Novice plan too! I've used it before and I really like it. I wouldn't worry about your pace. When I run, I just always try to remember "All I need to do is keep a 16 minute mile pace."
I remind myself of that, too! It helps now that my runs are getting longer and my time keeps getting better (if fractionally). I was worried that as my runs got longer I would drop to a slower pace! I'm glad to see that, so far, the opposite seems to be the case.
Are you using the Novice plan or did you bump up to one of his more advanced plans? We're starting on Week 5 right now which will give us one extra week somewhere along the line before DL Half. We'll be up in Tahoe in a few weeks and if the altitude messes with our runs that week, we'll just re-do that week. Otherwise, we'll plan on re-doing Week 11 and maybe make the last long run an 11 mile run.

Way to go! Right on!
I know what you're saying. I am run/walking about 15-16min miles average. For my first 5k, my speed was 13.57 min mile so I was psyched. It's so nice to know other people are in the same place! I have friends who have been running a long time and while they are so helpful and encouraging, there idea of a slow and gentle jog is way faster than my own! It's good to hear about other people who are progressing at a rate similar to my own.
With that said, I ran my 5 miles this morning in one hour, ten minutes, 40 seconds for an average pace of 14:08. This was better than last week, so I'm feeling good! I'm feeling a bit intimidated by the amount of miles/week that are starting to build up. I've got the two 4-mile runs this week, one 2-mile run (or cross training), and one day of 40 minutes cross training before running six miles at the end of the week. None of the runs individually seems at all un-doable. It's simply so many of them in one week sound somewhat daunting and exhausting.
That said, the 2-mile run now seems like a respite night and a piece of cake whereas just four or five months ago it would have seemed like a major workout!

I'm sort of using a self-created "advanced Novice" plan. I had a big health scare earlier this year which meant a month off from running and instructions from the doctor to keep my HR down (I have a normal resting HR, but for various sciencey reasons, my HR gets up into the 180's without too much struggle while running). So I'm doing a run/walk pattern and watching the numbers on my HRM to keep my HR down, but I'm also doing longer weekend runs than prescribed by the plan, simply because I already have a bigger base built up. I figure I'll still go no further than 10, but I know I can repeat weeks in there if I want. This past weekend, I did 6, and the schedule only called for 5, for example. I did 6 last weekend too (schedule said 4).

Hello INCREDIBLES!
Hope that everyone had a safe and happy 4th of July! :goodvibes
Hey, so I'm new! Got pointed over here a few days ago, then had some computer problems and didn't visit! So glad to have a group to join!
:welcome: elbowglitter!
:rolleyes1
:wave2: Hi Stephanie! I think a 14 minute mile sounds just great! Any pace that keeps me from being swept at the Princess is the pace for me! ;)
:hug, Lauren. Bummer about the stress fracture and acid reflux. I hope that you can get some rest and recover over the summer. :flower3: And check back in periodically and let us know how you are doing.
We had a very nice 4th, and I ran my first 5k today! I was hoping for anything under 30 minutes, as my last 3 mile race was 31:26, and my best split on a 10k was 30:06. I was very nervous, though, because the starting temp was 85. Came in at 29:06 :dance3::dance3::dance3:
Congrats on your race and your PR! :cool2:
I know what you're saying. I am run/walking about 15-16min miles average. For my first 5k, my speed was 13.57 min mile so I was psyched.
Compared to where we were this time last year, Kathy, we are miles
ahead! :thumbsup2
I did 6 last weekend too (schedule said 4).
There are quite a few people on the WISH events boards who do a run/walk combo. I like the idea myself. I've seen posts talking about people who race with pacers in various races and walked quite a bit during the race and still kept with the pace so I am sure that it can be done. Sounds like you are on track and working with your doctor to do what needs to be done! :thumbsup2
Have an INCREDIBLE day all!

These new months really throw off my groove. I forget all about them, don't subscribed to them, don't see any new postings e-mailed to me and I kinda forget. So here I am six days into the new month. I'll swing by later on just wanted to subscribed for now... I'm still alive!

:cool2::scared:<----- thats what the weather is like here. HOT, HOT, HOT and sunny. It is not helping me any with my training. Plus, my tummy is a bit upset. DD had the stomach bug on Monday, I may have a touch of it now myself. I tried running on the treadmill this morning, since the temp and heat index are out of control. I made it 2 miles of intervals before I had to call it quits, my stomach was just not happy. Plus I had trouble sleeping last night due to my tummy and the heat. Tomorrow is another day....
Please INCREDIBLES, stay cool and hydrated if you are going out to walk or run.

That sounds miserable Veronica. Hopefully you just have a little touch of the bug and it will go away without rearing it's ugly head too much.
I'm hitting the treadmill for 4 miles tonight. UGH. Though while training for my missed half this spring, I did ten miles on a treadmill due to all the snow, so 4 is definitely doable. Our gym has tvs on the mills, which is nice, but I can't focus on anything too deep. Thankfully, they have E!, MTV, and VH1. A little trashy reality tv gets me through the miles while also making me feel pretty good about myself! I'm headed to visit my family this weekend so I won't get any miles in (though Mom's going to rope me into moving boxes - they're moving out of our childhood home), but with the way I've set up my schedule, I think I can afford a weekend off.
Weighed in today and lost half a pound! Awesome and disappointing. Disappointing because I know it could have been more. I was terrible with my eating this week, and I knew I was doing it. Once I get back from my weekend trip, I am going to hit it hard. Splurges are allowed, but they are occasional, not frequent.

:wave2: Hi Stephanie! I think a 14 minute mile sounds just great! Any pace that keeps me from being swept at the Princess is the pace for me! ;)
:wave2: Hi Lisa! Yeah, I'm feeling pretty happy that a 14 minute mile pace is getting to be my norm. I'll keep it! I'd love to be a 12 minute/mile or better eventually, but if it happens, it happens. If it doesn't, I'm happy being a penguin.
:cool2::scared:<----- thats what the weather is like here. HOT, HOT, HOT and sunny. It is not helping me any with my training. Plus, my tummy is a bit upset.
That's no fun! I hope you feel better soon and get some cooler weather, too. Sacramento is usually miserable in the summer. It's been really mild so far (knock on wood). We even have our windows open right now which is pretty much unheard of for this time of day in July.

I dreaded my 4 miles on the treadmill last night and sure enough, I spent much of my time looking at how many tenths of a mile I had to go until I got to the next quarter mile or how many seconds until I got to a certain distance. It sure makes the time go slow! Our gym used to have all those nice trashy stations and now they cut it down to basically CNN, a few sports stations, and the Food Network. None of which are my cup of tea when I'm excercising. I enjoy my audio books, but it helps if I'm really into my book and I'm just kinda-sorta into my current one.
I ran my 4 miles yesterday in 54:31 (13:38/mile). Felt pretty good about that since I was just not in the mood to run!!! Nothing like a half-marathon coming up to keep me running even when I'd rather sit at home with my nose in a book.
I really need to get myself signed up for a 5K or 10K in the next month or so. Anyone from the Sacramento area signing up for one in August?

Evening, guys! I've been a bad, bad teammate... I'm so sorry! Life's just been a whirlwind lately. I have officially been a SAHM for the last eight days. I no longer punch a time clock! But I've been working from home instead, transcribing, and since it's less money, I've been working a lot harder. The holiday and being on vacation this week with my parents has thrown me off too. I'm working on the second week of my Half Marathon program (thanks, Vern... I'm using the mileage only one you sent me and my 2 mile runs every Thursday are intervals). I had a three mile run today and it was so hot and so humid, it was a disaster. My pace was 10:34, one I hadn't seen in a long time. I know that's decent but I've been seeing the 9:40s lately and I liked it there!!
3TinksandAnEeyore - You're doing an amazing job and soon enough you'll be seeing 11 minute and 10 minute miles. I remember going down another minute. I felt like I'd be stuck at 10:05 forever. It's the best feeling ever and you'll be there soon enough!
elbowglitter - Congrats on being down half a pound! And whoa to ten miles on the treadmill. Whoa to ten miles period! I haven't gotten past 6.5 but you better believe it I will. Unfortunately, I think it might have to be on the treadmill or the Y's 1/10th of a mile track as well.
Vern - We got hit with the massive heat too. The last couple days' runs have been terrible. A short 4.5 or 3.1 miler might as well have been 20 the way I was feeling. Hope the tummy's feeling better too! Thanks again for the HM training plan. It's totally doable!
Amy - WTG on your kick butt 5K! My best time was 29:17 and I have one next Friday... hoping to go under 29:00 but that may be pushing it since I've been running super slow and it's a 7:30 in the evening run and it might still be uberhot. We'll see how it goes but congrats on your awesome time!
WISH t-shirts? I need to investigate this!!

Excellent pace for a run you didn't want to do! I agree - it's so much easier to get out and run when you have a race to train for.

1/10th track?! Won't you get dizzy? ;)
I got my 4 miles in yesterday. Just below a 13 minute mile, which isn't bad since in the middle of the run, my mom called my cell phone three times in a row. I was worried that it might be an emergency, so I slowed the treadmill to a walk and called her back. It was nothing, but then she just continued to talk! I told her I was on the treadmill, and she was still pretty chatty. She's fun like that. :)
I'm headed to my parents' house for a long weekend of helping out around the house as they prepare to move, so I won't be getting a long run in this weekend. I'm not too worried - I think a rest weekend might be good for me, as long as I hit the training as soon as I get back.

Our Y track you need to do 12.5 laps iin the middle lane for 1 mile:eek: Dizzy doesn't even describe it. Plus the corners are banked, which makes for an even more fun run. It is a last resort for me, following the treadmill, which I HATE. At this point, I am resigned to just running outside no matter what Mother Nature has going on.
Good job on your run Megan! No worries about taking a rest day or two.

Good evening. It sounds like everyone's tolerating the heat ok, though slower than normal. I got out 2 days this week, and tonight I signed up for a 5k on sunday morning. A friend wanted to do it, she's much faster than me, and initially I thought it wasn't enough time to get my head around, but we checked out last years times, and since there were quite a few who were slower than I anticipate I'll be, I said what the heck, and we registered. She did the 5k with me last month and it was really nice to know someone else.

Too funny! And great time! Can you believe it's only eight more weeks 'till the 1/2?

I have a friend who does. Me? Not a problem!!! I'm telling myself it's not coming off because my muscle keeps replacing fat, but that's only going to work for so long. :rolleyes1 But, seriously, my friend has simple tastes in food and eats very healthy. When she's training for a marathon she gets really small.
On another note, I got new running shoes today! :yay: My DH and I went to Fleet Feet and got "real" running shoes. Meaning, a trained shoe fitter measured our feet this way and that, looked at the wear patterns on our old shoes, watched us walk and squat and then had us try on shoes good for our feet/running style. (My former method was to find a pricier pair of shoes at one of the big box sport stores that was marked down a lot. Not exactly scientific.) I ended up with a pair of Saucany shoes and boy are they comfortable!
I haven't run with them yet because I did my four miles this morning. A little slower today, but I'm okay with that: 57:28 for a 14:22/mile average. I was on the treadmill and hadn't eaten much of anything for breakfast. It was also at a different fitness club with a different treadmill. It didn't feel entirely comfortable to me.

Isn't Fleet Feet just awesome? I love ours, the people are so great. I wear Saucony too, the ProGrid Omni. I just got the 9's, I totally love them. I have to say though, that I tried the Asics Gel Kayano on ($140:eek:) and that was one sweet shoe. But I guess I didn't want to risk it not feeling as good as my Omni's and didn't get them. Oh well, at least I saved $30!
Does you Fleet Feet have a rewards program? Our has one where for every $250 you spend, they send you a $25 gift certificate. I just got another one this week since DD got her sneakers last weekend.
I am waiting for the rain to come today, it is supposed to rain today and tomorrow. Hopefully it cools things off a bit, but next week we are right back to the heat and humidity. UGH.

They did say something about the reward program and that we should get something in the mail in the next week or so. DH bought shoes and socks and I bought shoes and a tech shirt (sick of wearing icky cotton). It added up. Ouch! But, DH had a chance to run with his shoes yesterday and said they were terrific. Today's my rest day and I don't know if I'll wear them tomorrow for my cross training, so I'll have to wait and try mine out on my 6-miler on Sunday.
It's hot and dry, dry, dry out here. Rain and a little humidity don't sound awful to me right now, but I guess it's pretty much a case of "the grass is greener". I swear the dryness just sucks the life out of me.

Hey there! Sorry I have been MIA, this has been a strange week with Dh home Monday and everything. I am looking forward to next week, no camps or swim lessons. :woohoo:
I have started my new running schedule that I will continue until marathon weekend in January this week and boy am I TIRED!! It is good though and I am actually looking forward to all the running. I am now doing a little cross training and weights Monday, speedwork and sometimes abs Tuesday, recovery run Wednesday, medium distance Thursday, cross train Friday, medium distance Saturday, long run Sunday. I think that I will use Wednesday or Friday as a day off if I am feeling really beat. We will have to see how the heat and humidity treats me:scared1:.
On another note, my Mom's family will be arriving in droves this week for my cousin's wedding party (she got married in May in NY and is having a second reception here in FL for the family who couldn't make it to the wedding). It will be so much fun to get together with all of my cousins and their families. I am looking forward to tons of beach and pool time to cool off:cool2:. I am hosting a shower for the two of us that are preggo right now and am trying to come up with an easy menu. Any ideas? It is at lunch time and I don't want anything hot since it will be sweltering outside! I am thinking about making tuna salad sandwiches, bruschetta, fruit salad, veggie tray but I would like one more item that is a little more interesting. Oh, and of course we will have desserts:cloud9:. I am going to have cute little cupcakes made for everyone with baby girl decorations (both are having girls as their second).
I hope everyone is staying cool and hydrated.

One of our party favorites is the boule bread with the dill dip. Get the round crusty bread at the market, cut out the middle to make a bowl. Dip is equal parts sour cream and mayonnaise. Dill and parsley, well I don't have measurements for those, but I make it to my taste. I use quite a bit. Best to let the dip sit overnight. I always get extra bread of another kind (I like to use pumpernickel for the bowl, and a sourdough or French to cut up) since it goes so well. It may not be "interesting" but its usually popular!

While definitely sky-high in the calorie department, we made "Red, White, and Bleu Potato Salad" for the 4th and received numerous raves about it. I'm not usually a fan of bleu cheese, but this really was good. We made it after tasting at a potluck a few weeks ago where it was also being raved about. It's a pretty simple recipe and since it tastes best if made ahead, you could put it together the day before and then not worry about it anymore.
20 small red potatoes, skin on
1 small red onion, chopped
1 package (6 oz) bleu cheese, crumbled
1 package bacon, cooked, crumbled
Mayo to taste
Boil the potatoes until completely cooked/soft. Let cool and chop into bite size pieces. The onion can be very over powering and you may consider using ½ - ¾ of it. Mix all ingredients in a large bowl and chill for an hour.

Hey guys, hope everyone is having an incredible weekend. Checking in with a 10k this morning. 1:02:23... 49 seconds off my PR, but not bad, all things considered.
I really hate hills. :rotfl:
Now for a very leisurely weekend OFF, back in training again Tuesday for a 4M next Saturday. Then I'm largely race-less until a steep uphill 5k at the end of August. Need to start getting back in my head and doing some long training runs.

That's an awesome time! Especially if it included hills. Hills are one thing I have not yet included in my training program. Hal Higdon doesn't include them in the Novice Half Training program, so I'm taking that as tacit understanding that it's not necessary yet. :rotfl:

Good morning, Incredibles!
I did my first early morning long run this morning. I wanted to get it in before DH left for the day so I wouldn't have it hanging over my head all day long. So I got up at 4:00AM, got dressed, and hit the pavement by 4:20AM. I had a whole wheat/cornmeal blueberry muffin before I left and took my first ever packet of Gu with me. I didn't take water because I don't have one of the belt holders and couldn't abide the thought of carrying a bottle for six miles. I was wearing my new shoes and had my iPhone with Runmeter running. I didn't put on an audiobook this morning. Something about the early, early morning light and sounds seemed more conducive to just running with the sounds of the neighborhood and nature with an occasional interruption from runmeter to announce my pace, distance, and time.
About two miles into the run, I could feel a blister forming on the insole of my right foot. Now, I should have known better than to wear brand new shoes (even if they were high quality and fitted to me by someone who knows what they're doing). I stopped my run to cinch down the laces a bit more and that helped. I took my Gu at 45 minutes into my run and really wished I had some water to help wash it down. I bought two other brands and I'll have to see how I like them. Not a huge fan of Gu. The taste was okay if overly sweet. It was mostly the texture that put me off. Felt like trying to swallow a big blob of orange flavored mucus. Gross, I know. Sorry if that was TMI.
My GPS on my iPhone with Runmeter kept cutting out. I started guessing this was probably the case when I was about 3 miles into my run, but Runmeter said I was only 2-something miles in and was reporting some of my paces at 17- or 18-minutes. I had mapped out the six mile run on Gmap Pedometer which I've found to be really accurate, so I knew something was up. It's funny, because sometimes the GPS works just fine in that area and other times it doesn't. So, my time spent running the six miles 1:21:35 which puts me at 13:36/miles. I'm thrilled! I am going to drive the route later today, though, just to check the mileage.
Overall, I feel really good about the run. I need to figure out how to bring some water with me. I probably need to wear my new running shoes for an hour or two each day for the next week to make sure they are broken in to my feet. I'll try a different energy gel next time. And I might need to try some of the jelly bean type energy supplement or maybe the crunchy one I heard about. I need to find something lightweight with a pocket to put some of this stuff in while I run!!!

Maybe you need some more protein in your diet, Amy.

Enjoy your family visit! :goodvibes
Great time, Amy, and a new PR! :cool2:
Sounds like everyone is doing INCREDIBLE! I keep making progress through the C25K and need to take a page from mikamah's book and sign up for a few 5Ks this fall before I start my 16 weeks before the Princess. It is wonderful to feel so strong and be running.
I have to say I never imagined a year ago that I would be planning to run a half marathon and on a race team with a bunch of INCREDIBLE folks on my 50th birthday! :goodvibes I will use my birthday money from my Mom and MIL to get some good running shoes.
Have a great day everyone!

Amy - congrats on the race:woohoo:, hills are the worst! I also second the protein in your diet for keeping on the weight.
Stephanie - super early runs are pretty neat. I also love the silence of that time of day. You do need to drink water with the Gu, not only is it easier to swallow, but it can dehydrate you if you take them without water. I would get one of the bottles that you hold or a belt for a water bottle. They often have a pocket too for other needs. I have a Camelback fanny pack that I use on long runs, not cute at all, but very useful.
Thanks for the recipes, I appreciate them! You guys rock!
I ran a run this morning at 6:00:scared:. I was pretty slow and got a bad cramp, but I finished it and that was my goal.
Hope you all had a great weekend!

Hello Incredibles!!
I did my second 5k yesterday in the heat and humidity, and I was a little slower than my first, but ok with that. They had timing chips in our bibs, so it was also more accurate than the first. My time was 44.07 and I was 837 out of 962, which really thrilled me not to be so close to the last. It was a benefit for two cancer charities, and there were a lot of walkers too, but it made me feel good. I didn't take off too fast this time, but the first half was hot and sunny, and the second half was more shady. It was around a lake but there was no breeze. I did it with a friend who asked me thursday to do it with her, and as I approached the finish line two men were cheering, "go Kathy" and I thought the woman ahead of me must be kathy too, but after she passed, I saw my friend with them, and went over. It was too funny, but I got a little excited to hear some men calling my names, even though they were a couple. :rotfl:
I've been having some pain in my left foot, in the ball of the foot toward the ,middle, and when I'm in my running shoes or dansko work clogs, it feels pretty good, but if I'm bare foot or in flip flops it hurts a lot more. It did hurt during the race yesterday, but I continued, so I think that's why it hurt much worse last night. I just got off work and after some ibuprofen this am it is feeling better. I had done the wii fit a couple days last week, and usually do it barefoot, so that may be part of it. I'm going to go to the running store and see if I might need new sneakers. I've had them for 5 months, and I've heard you should get new shoes every 6 months or so. I figure too, at my weight they probably get a little more wear and tear than average. How often do you all get new shoes?
Lisa- is there a place near you that will fit you for your new shoes? I was totally amazed when I went in for mine at the amount of time they put into it, and my shoes felt awesome. You should sign up for a 5k. I'd like to try one a month, and in the fall, maybe a 10k.
Stephanie- congrats on your 6 miles!! That is such a great pace too. I like to hear all the info about gu and water on long runs. I don't like to carry water either, but in this heat for those longer distances, you must need it. Yesterday after a mile and a half, I was so happy to see the water station.
Amy- congrats on your 10K!!!
Good luck to all on your runs this week. It's still pretty hot and humid here, though it looks like a thunder storm is heading our way. I'm going to hit the running store before I pick up my son at camp.
Have a great day!!:)

Oh lauren I am so sorry to hear about your leg. Hopefully these 8 weeks will go fast for you so you can be back in your running shoes before you know it. Take this time to rest and workout other muscles on your body. Keep up the positive attitude
We had a very nice 4th, and I ran my first 5k today! I was hoping for anything under 30 minutes, as my last 3 mile race was 31:26, and my best split on a 10k was 30:06. I was very nervous, though, because the starting temp was 85.
Came in at 29:06 :dance3::dance3::dance3:
Great Run Amy!!! You are so awesome!
I know the feeling but atleast you lost and didnt gain. You need to have splurges occasionally to keep life fun!
Hi Amy glad to see you back on here, we missed you. I always say its harder to be at home than it is to go to work so if you are working from home and being a SAHM you got double the work. My hat goes off to you!
Sounds like alot of fun. I hope you have/had a great time with your family. The shower ideas sound fun!

Great job Kathy! The heat will really make the run slower so dont worry about your time. I was cracking up at the male couple cheering for you.:lmao: I think your problem possibly could be plantar fascitis. Look it up and see what you think. Rest will help, wearing shoes with good arch supports, and ice after runs. Hope it is feeling better soon. I had a similar issue in the first few weeks of running. I took it easy and it eventually went away.
As you can see I am back from vacation. We had a great time. I am really glad to be home and to get back on track with my eating. I think I gained 3-4lbs. I will officially weigh in tomorrow on my work scale. I did get a run in this morning which felt good until the 2nd mile and then my legs felt like jelly. I think I am so tired and run down I need to really take it slow this week.
I hope you all had a great holiday!

Kathy - great job on your 5K. I too was giggling over your men cheerleaders:cheer2:. I agree that it could be planter fasicitis. I have had trouble with it and changing shoes often helps, along with ice and rest. Mine is worst in the summer when I am wearing flip flops all the time. I do change my shoes a lot, I have a very heavy footfall and being on the bigger side (I have been over 150 lbs until very recently) I feel like I wear them out faster. I tend to get new shoes every 4-5 months.
Lindsay - welcome back. Glad you had a fun vacay! It always takes me awhile to get back in the groove after a vacation.
No run today, but I went to the gym. I did some cardio (walking and eliptical), weights and abs. I always feel so strong after weights:lovestruc.
Have a great Monday all!

I did look it up and it seems like that pain usually goes back toward the heel, and my foot seems to hurt as it spreads out from side to side, if that makes sense. It feels better today, and I'm not going to run again til tomorrow and see if that helps. I"ve got my fingers crossed it's just a strain, and maybe a little arthritis. The funny thing is, since I've been more faithful about running every week, the rest of my body feels pretty good. After my first race when I really pushed, my hips and knees were achey for days, so maybe I'm actually getting conditioned. Oh, and i bought a new pair of shoes. I will keep these strictly for running, and maybe they'll last longer. I could feel the difference in them. My other shoes, because they were so comfy, I'd were them for more than just running, so the support had worn down.
I do have to say, I got some more motivation to stick to ww and try to lose some weight when I looked at the race pictures online. :rotfl: I've got some work to do.
Lindsay- Hope you're recovering from vacation and getting a little rest. It's funny how vacations aren't always relaxing.
Have an incredible day!!!:cheer2:

Back from my weekend at my parents' house! As expected, I didn't get in any running, but I was also proud of myself for not eating myself into a stupor, as often happens when I visit them. I came back half a pound up from last week, but as I flew home yesterday, I'm hoping that's just water weight from airport food. I also came back with a bit of a cold, so maybe I have half a pound of gross in my sinuses. (eeew)
I've got a 4 mile run scheduled for tonight and I hope the weather holds. I've kind of over-scheduled myself this week, so I'm having to switch around workouts to get everything in, which is kind of a bummer. I always stress when I have to miss a run. I know that as long as I get my weekend long run in, I'll be okay, but it's always a bit of a freakout.
And now, back to digging out my inbox. I was only gone two days, and it's going to take me hours to plow through all of this!

Glad your back, I know it takes awhile to catch up on all the social networking and emails. You dont realize how much you miss when your gone. Have a great run tonight. I am hoping the thunderstorms hold off here too. I dont worry to much about the rain, since I love running it but I am not that adventurous to run in lightning and thunder.

Lindsay, welcome back from vacation! Hope you are settling back into your routine!
Kathy-plantar fascitis can really stink. DH had it, ended up in physical therapy for most of last summer. Inserts in his shoes too. Rest, ice, the shoes will all help. And awesome job on the 5k!:thumbsup2
Megan-isn't it amazing how much piles up in just a couple days? Good luck sorting through it all.
To all my other INCREDIBLES, hope you are all doing well. It is pouring rain here right now, it has been hot and humid. Supposed to continue being hot and humid. DH is going out at 4:45 am:scared1: to run and I go out at 5:30am. Todays run was good, I had one of my better times for a 3 mile run.
I am trying oh so hard to stay on plan with WW, but its tough. I am hungry, like tummy grumbling hungry right now. I took DD to TKD, so I did not get to eat dinner until 7:15. I took some almonds with me to snack on to tide me over, but even after my dinner I am still grumbly in my tumbly.

Veronica- I hate those days of feeling so hungry. Your body must need some food if your tummy is grumbling. I say feed it and see what happens. Choose something low point and it wont make you feel so bad.
I just got done with my 3 mile run. The rain held off but it was so humid I felt like I couldnt even breathe. It was a little slow I completed it in 38min. I am still getting back into the grove.
The good news is I only gained .8lbs on my vacation. I apologize if I already said this I never can remember what I post where anymore. I am hoping to have it off within the next couple of days. I am proud of myself it seems as though vacation did not throw a hiccup into my routine and I started right back on it yesterday!:goodvibes

I agree with Lindsay, on ww we aren't supposed to be hungry. I've been struggling this week, again, but bought a big bag of cherries and they are helping me to get back on track. Better than sitting with a bag of chips or cookies, but I have had those too.:rotfl: Hang in there.

Thanks so much everyone for the plantar fasciitis info. I took mon and tues off from running, and went for a bike ride with my son one day, and my foot felt much better yesterday. I did 3 miles yesterday after work in my new shoes, and my food didn't hurt at all while I ran, but just a little sore after, so I did ice it, and it's pretty good this morning. I have heard that PF is so hard to get over, so I'm happy that I'm feeling much better already. When I think about those little bones and joints in my foot, and my 210 pound body running on them, I figure, of course they would be strained.:rotfl: I'm sticking to approx 5 min run, 3 min walk pattern, and that seems to work well for me. Now, if I could get the eating under control, and lose some weight, I would increase the run times.
Have an incredible day everyone!!

Hi Incredibles!
Well again I've went MIA for a couple of weeks! It has been CRAZY around our house. My sister-in-law from TN was here for 3 weeks and during that same time my brother-in-law from TX came in town for 11 days with his two young daughters so things have been busy, busy, busy! So basically that put my DH and all his siblings together for a good 11 days. Fortunately, the sister-in-law stayed with us and the brother-in-law with young daughters stayed with my DH's brother that lives here.....our house was quite.....theirs wasn't!! :rotfl:
Anyway, we all spent time together EVERY day.....baseball games, lake days, lots of pool time, etc.... It was absolutely exhausting. And with both DS's involved in different sports...one swims on a rec swim team and the other plays waterpolo we've been gone EVERY weekend....and this weekend is no different....headed to Santa Cruz for a waterpolo tournament on Saturday and Davis for a swim meet on Sunday!
Now, with all that being said....I am having a major tough time getting in my long training runs :sad2: I can fit in 3-4 miles through the week, but never seems to be time for the long runs. My son & I did 6 miles last Saturday and it wasn't as good as I would like it. My DS is having major issues with his knees. He's good for about the 1st 3-4 miles and then his knees really start hurting. I think I'm going to make him an appt to see the sports injury doctor I've been seeing for my feet. We should be higher in our mileage but can only do what we can I guess.
and oh yeah.....way back on the 3rd both my DS's and I participated in the "Folsom Firecracker" and our results were: My older DS and my nephew did the 5k and DS finished 2nd in his age group with a 25:?? finish time...and my younger DS(the one that is doing the DL 1/2 with me) and I finished the 10K in 1h 15m......my WORST time ever on a 10k! I was so disappointed but my DS was having his knee issues so I walked a lot with him. He starts out really strong but then poops out. So I'm thinking of starting the run/walk method with him. This will hopefully slow him down in the beginning and he can finish strong and not in major agony at the end.
But I have a question about the Galloway run/walk methods.....It says for a 10min pace do a 3min run and 1 min walk. Does this mean for the 3 mins we would need to run a 10 min pace or possibly faster? I'm confused.....I'm assuming this would mean that the race would be finished with an average of a 10 min pace......:confused3 I run/walk but never have I run/walk a set time....I just walk a few feet and the start running back shortly. It works for me, but DS seems to be struggling and I want the DL 1/2 to be fun for him....not misery!
Hope everyone is staying cool and hydrated.....the next 3 days for us are going to be in the triple digits  Hard to believe summer is almost over! But the DL 1/2 is getting closer :cool1:
Have a GREAT day everyone!

Always good to see a doc, but what really helped my knee issues were stretches, strength work, and a foam roller. And ice after every run, even if the knees don't hurt. For years, I wore a brace and then finally decided to do something about the pain rather than just avoiding it. I'm not always good about the stretching, but I'm trying!

Welcome back to the board patsy. What a crazy but Im sure fun couple of weeks you must of had. I had to laugh at your comment about the younger kids and the not so quiet house. We just got back from vacation and went with a family that has a 10yr old and an infant. Im sure they did not expect the loudness and craziness of my two boys ages 3 and 5. It can get a little overwhelming sometimes and if your not use to it I can see how that must drive a person nuts.:lmao: Glad you got the quieter of the two.
dont worry about your runs being slower at least your doing them. Hopefully you can find some running time in the next couple of weeks to start increasing your mileage. Good luck!

I totally agree with the stretching thing....although I'm personally not too good at making myself do it. I usually have no problems after...cause it feels so good to get those stretches in, but before a run...I'm terrible at that. The foam roller is a good idea...I think I'll have him to start using that a couple of times a day. And I definitely think he needs to strengthen his knees. He's a goalie for waterpolo and he "egg beats" an entire game and sometimes by the end of the game he is in major pain. I'm wondering if a brace would help him mentally get past the pain. If he puts on icy hot before a waterpolo game he say's his knees aren't hurting as bad at the end of the game.....sometimes I think it is just trial and error, but I'm definintely going to have the doctor to look at it.
Good luck!
my two boys are 16 & 18 and my SIL's kids are 24 & 20....so we definitely have left the years of the screeching and constant "I wants".....but it was fun being with the family since we only get ALL together about every 2 years.

Hi ladies!
I did a 5.11 mile run tonight. I planned on doing 5 but I kinda forgot the route I had mapped using mapmyrun.com and ended up doing a little extra:laughing: I completed it in 1hr and 4min. Slow compared to some of you speedy runners but I am proud that I made it that far. It has been my farthest run to date. It was extremely humid again. I am really hoping that keeping persistent with running during this horrible weather will only help me be even better when its cooler.
Question? How will I ever get faster...... Can I just keep doing what I am doing and in time I will be able to go faster without dying out? Im thinking as I loose weight I will continue to get quicker too, is this true? Currently I am 195 and I was 215 when I started. I just feel like I got to 11-12 min miles in a few months and now I have been stuck there for awhile. Any thoughts or encouragements would be greatly appreciated.

Good grief, I can't keep up with this thread. For some reason, I haven't been getting the e-mails and it makes me forget about it for a while. Anyway, I have a 5K tonight. It'll be fun, I'm sure. I have to leave in an hour... it's 90 degrees out and I got wicked gas. It's gonna be an interesting run, for sure! I'll report back later with how it all went and hopefully I'll get caught up and knock out some personals too.

Jess, just pretend its gas powering you on!! And always pretend it wasn't you who did it;)
Lindsay, yes you will get faster. The theory is that for every pound you lose you can take 2-5 seconds off each mile time. So losing 5 pounds could shave 10-25 seconds off. And the more cardiovascular fitness you have, the more efficient you will get at running and will be able to run harder. It takes time, I am testament to that. 3 years ago I was running 15 min miles, now I am running 10 min miles. Didn't happen overnight, no siree, but happen it did.
And a big :thumbsup2:cool1: for your longest run!
To make you all feel better, my DH has started training in earnest for the DL 5k. Now he is 6', 314 lbs. A big boy. He ran 2 miles in 38:20 today. Thats 19:10 per mile. And he felt good about it. I walk waaayyy faster than that. But he is slogging along. So don't feel down about how fast or slow you are going-you're going. That is all that counts.
I have DD doing a C25k program, she is on week 2. We are doing hers on the TM, it is just easier for her. She is running 15 min miles. So Daddy will have to keep up with her at DL I think!!
I have 7 miles tomorrow, 4 on Sunday, hoping the early am weather is not disgusting like it is right now. Also hoping to see a 1 and 5 in my weight tomorrow, very likely as long as I don't blow it tonight. Which I am not planning to do. Had a big salad at lunch, just starting to get hungry now.
Keep being INCREDIBLE ladies, I have faith in all of you!

oh veronica you know just how to boost my confidence. Thank you so much. I now feel so much better. I just hate competing in the races and knowing I am in the back of the bunch....even though I am never last. I was/am a very competitive athlete. I was a varsity bball captain, played on one of the top district level teams in field hockey, and played 1st base in high school softball we only lost in the district final game by 1 run. So I am used to always being the best or close to it. Running total makes me feel a little bit like a loser sometimes when I cant make myself go faster. I think its all internal mentally but I struggle with this all the time. I really need to just let go and realize I am 14 years older and not a star athlete anymore. Thanks for the advice and for listening to me babble!
Good luck with your runs this weekend. I know this heat and humidty is horrible. I will send some PD to your scale too.:wizard:

That was my weigh in this morning!!! YAY!!!:cool1::thumbsup2 Finally broke through that 160. Maintaining it and continuing to lose is key, but I am so motivated at this point. Still hoping to hit 145 by 9/3 when we leave for DL.

Veronica, GREAT job!!!
Jess, hope your 5k went awesome.
Lindsay, you'll get faster, naturally. By taking shorter walk breaks or doing better on hills, your time will automatically get better. Take it easy and try not to focus as much on your time as your endurance.
Kathy, hope you are feeling well!
I am also lazy at stretching. *kicks self* LOL.
Just got back from a 4M race. Waiting for official time, but I think it's 39:43, which would be a PR of 2:33, which is what I hoped for. Given the weather (low 80s and very sunny, going up to 95 today), just finishing would have been fine, but I really wanted a PR. I had to walk a little up a hill in an area with no shade whatsoever, but everything else from my training fit right into place. I can't believe my long run is tomorrow, though. EEEk
Update: official time 39:35. PR by 2:41

That is awesome your husband and daughter are joining you with the running. For the first mile of the race I did last weekend, I was with a couple and their little girl who looked to be about 8 and she would sprint and then walk slowly, so she'd pass me, and then I'd pass her, and she was so cute and i cheered her on each time. I'm going to encourage my son do do a 5k with me later this summer. I think he'd love it.

My foot is totally back to normal again, thank goodness. I did get new running shoes and will keep them strictly for running. I did 3 miles wed, and 2 today, and the week ahead I'm planning mon and wed runs. I want to increase my distance, and have done 3.7, so monday will aim for 4 miles. I can always do more walking than running if it seems too much. I'd like to add a half mile to a longer run every other week or so, and work up to 7 miles by the end of sept. In my head, I need to be able to do 7 miles, at 14 min/mile, by oct 1st to plan on doing the princess. Id love to be at 12 min miles by feb, so I'd feel pretty confident not to be swept.
Good luck with all your runs. Another hot one here and looks like most everywhere. Enjoy the weekend, Incredibles!!!

Amy- Great job on your race. wow to beat your PR by 2:41 in this weather is amazing. You rock:thumbsup2
Kathy- thank you so much for the encouraging words. You are awesome. You are doing such a great job too. I think your plans of increasing your runs are good. You will be able to do it with no problem. You will be awesome by the time the princess rolls around.

Fellow Incredibles!
I've been away for MONTHS! Not away away, just away from the boards. Life has been so hectic lately I can't seem to focus on all of my fun internet things, so unfortunately they got left in the dust. But I'm back! Wedding plans have come together and I've finally gotten over my training hurdle for my half marathon in September (I was very, very lazy this spring/early summer). I'll try to catch up (at least on the past month) and see what I've missed.

Just catching up on replies...
elbowglitter: What a horrible situation! I was so worried about the chance of getting sick right before the race and having to sit out after all of that hard work. I hope you get the chance to run it next year or even the year after, and that you're healthy as can be!
3tinksandaneeyore/Stephanie: Have you ever used DailyMile.com? If you're like me and feel like you need to tell people about your training so you feel accountable for it, it's a great site to use. Plus, it acts as a running log/journal to look back on! And when you see the mileage add up on the sidebar, you really start to feel good about it!
mickeymomto2/Lauren: I'm sorry to hear about your stress fracture! At least it's an excuse to sit out the horrible sticky summer weather. If your goal is the princess, starting training in the fall should be fine considering that's when I started. In fact, since I started from scratch in August (half mile out, half mile back) I didn't really get going until November/December when I ran my first 4 miles. Good luck with your healing!
roomthreeseventeen/Amy: Congrats on your awesome 5K time! You should be so proud of yourself!
vernrdh/Veronica: Great advice about keeping cool and drinking lots of water. This summer has been a hot one and unfortunately it makes training tough!
lisah0711: Keep up the good work with your training!
mikamah: Great job in your race! As for your foot/arch pain, I had the same problem for years. Once I got fitted for a real pair of running shoes that supported my flexible arches/overpronation, they felt fine except when I didn't have them on. I lived in flip flops and Chuck Taylors, which are two types of footwear known for being flat, flat, flat. My poor arches would flex to the point where they were flat, and they didn't like it. I sucked it up and bought myself Birkinstocks for the summer (I have them on right now) and Dr. Scholl's for Women arch inserts for my Chucks and clogs. That's helped my problem a lot. Of course last week I decided to wear my flip flops a few days in a row, and ended up having to cut my Friday run short because of really bad arch pain. That right there proves to me that my arch support is working for my feet.
mommyof2pirates: Great job with your 5 miler! As far as trying to get faster, over time as you increase your distance and then come back to shorter distances you may feel like you can run faster than you previously did. A good way to help your body run faster is to do some speedwork at a local track or hill workouts. You could also add some sprinting or faster bursts in your regular runs (say you'll run faster from this mailbox to that tree, t hen slow it down again, then pick another distance to run faster for, then slow it back down again). I find that track speedwork helps a LOT. I believe adding some speedwork (well, in my case I'm not very speedy, but still) may also help burn some weight as well, but don't quote me on that.

Happy Sunday, all! It's been a busy weekend for me. I have a new roommate moving in next weekend and I've got to get the house organized for her. And then I realized that I'm hosting book club this Wednesday. More cleaning!
Got a bit off my running schedule this week, but I got in a long run of 7 miles on Saturday (on the treadmill - UGH). Actually, the treadmill wasn't so bad. I found a podcast that's actually kind of an audio-drama (a book with various actors reading the parts), so that's been fun. I would like it to cool off just a little bit so I can really get a chance to run outside. I've got an evening 5K next Saturday, so I'm crossing my fingers that it's nice.

Everyone is busy in the dog days of summer-trying to get in workouts, work, family etc. I hope that everyone is doing well and not over heated or stressed!!
Can't stay long-gotta get DD up and ready for camps today and off to work. Ran this morning, it was okay. I wasn't feeling it, but put the miles in. Its okay. Tomorrow is another day.

I am ready for the fall! The blizzard conditions were better than this!
I lifted weights last night for the first time in a while, and man, I am out of shape! So it felt good. Got on the scale this morning though, and I'm at the heaviest weight I've been in years. Not a good thing at all. I do have a 4 mile run scheduled for tonight, and I'm headed to the gym right after work. I did just eat a pack of Starburst (5 WW points - ugh), but well, it's done, and now I have to burn them off. I'm going to really try to keep my eating in check this week and count WW points like crazy.

You all (and my SIL that was visiting for 3 weeks) have inspired me to start back with WW.....I went 3 weeks ago and started weighing in again. I'm a lifetime member but quit weighing in over a year ago and my weight is showing it. It has been hard to get back to the seriously watching my points mode. I've always estimated my points throughout the day, but it just doesn't work as well as actually counting...and I'm hoping when I lose these 15 pounds I've gained my running will go back to what it was. I've never been fast, but I'd love to do a 5 mile run without pain.
Due to time issue I switched yesterday's miles with today so I'm due to take on 5 miles...it is going to be tough. I don't think it is supposed to hit triple digits today like it has been which is good because I hate running on the treadmill! But it is hitting the 90's.....
Well lunch is over and I better get back at it. Hope everyone is having an Incredible day!

I hear on the weather. I am tired of running in this heat and humidity and it doesnt even matter what time of day you pick to run its hot and humid the whole day. its getting frustrating but I guess there is nothing else we can do except trudge through it and hope that the fall weather comes early. :confused3 Good luck with your run and gym workout today. I know after doing weight watchers for awhile its alot easier to just estimate points. I find that writing it down helps. Great for starting over. Hopefully you will be on a pain free run in no time.

Gotta love points counting. I get good at it, then I have one day and blow it for the week and then never get back to it. Like I have one big meal I'm not sure how to estimate, so I just give up. Clearly, that's not how WW should work. So I'm just doing my best. Tonight I'm hosting book club, and bought tasty treats, but will be sure to know what I'm putting in my mouth before it gets there - and then remember that I have to burn it off later.
4 miles on the treadmill was harder than I thought it would be. I blame the heat and humidity, even though it's nice inside. I think that I was just worn out from the day.

Hello fellow Incredibles! Alicia - you're not the only one who's been away for a while. :rolleyes1
Welcome new Incredibles! :welcome:
Megan - sorry the Princess didn't work out for you last year. I can only imagine your disappointment. However, this will only make the Wine and Dine that more special. Here's some advance :wizard: to help keep you healthy and injury free.
Lauren - so sorry about the stress fracture (and acid reflux - yikes). I tend to get shin splints if I push it too hard. I just have to back off whenever the pain kicks in. As you said, just concentrate on getting better for now. Sounds like you’ll have plenty of time to train for the Princess. :thumbsup2
Kathy - glad your foot is doing better. Sometimes these little aches and pains just happen and with luck and ibuprofen, they go away quickly! ;)
Patsy - it wouldn't hurt for your son to see a doctor about his knees. I agree with others about stretching. However, one thing I found interesting about Jeff Galloway is that he doesn't like to stretch before a run. If I recall correctly, he said stretching (especially heavy stretching) can lead to injury if the muscles aren't warmed up. At his running clinic, he suggested running for about a mile (or warm up first) and then doing some stretching. One thing my DH likes to do is take a warm shower before a run to kind of loosen the muscles. Now, after a run is a different story! You definitely need to stretch.
Amy - WAY TO GO on your first 5K & 10K. Your times are AWESOME!!!! You are going to do so well for your first half! And, I'm going to be there to cheer you on! WOO HOO! And, to answer your question....I have had no trouble keeping weight on during a race.
Lindsay - don’t worry about being in the back of the pack. I’ll be there with countless other WISHers and other folks. We get our money’s worth back in the back and we have a little fun along the way. However, it sounds like you’ll be WAY ahead of us with your time. In addition to losing weight, doing sprint/speed work helps you get speedier as well. Alicia mentioned this as well, I now see. Keep up the good work!
Veronica – congrats on your weight loss! Sounds like you are on track to reach your goal. 145 is what I should weigh. :rolleyes1 When I did my first marathon in 2008, I was 20 pounds lighter than I am now – and I was speedier too. *sigh* Keep up the good work!
July 11 - someone from our group had a birthday on this day. The reason I remember this is because this is my brother's BD and I remember someone said it was their special day as well. :bday: (late) to whomever it is. Please identify yourself. :teeth:
As for me, the weather has been the main culprit with my training. I just melt in the heat. We've had such high humidity and temperatures. The heat index all week and practically for the whole month has been 105-110 degrees. I suppose if I were more fit, it wouldn't bother me so much. Instead of walking/running, I've been biking. It's easier for me to do this in the heat. It's a great cross-training activity but unfortunately, it's been the only training I've been doing.
Last week, I biked for about 100 miles (25, 25 & 50). I walked one day for 4 miles. This week will be about the same on the bike but I plan to walk 7 miles on Sunday. I've got the DL half coming up in Sept so I need to kick my rear in gear and get busy training. You guys are such an inspiration. You're doing so well with your training and not missing a beat.
Since I'm more or less walking now instead of doing the run/walk intervals like I used to, I decided to sign up for a racewalking clinic in early August. Really, my DH, a powerwalker, signed up for it and convinced me that I needed to as well. Racewalking is such an awkward movement for me. I just hope I can do it without looking like a total baffoon. There is a guy from my small town that can racewalk a 9 -min mile. He passes a lot of runners. I'd be happy walking a 14-min mile. I'll let ya'll know how it goes.
Next up for me - I'm going to do a 50-mile bike ride with about 20 people this Saturday. Afterwards, we're going out for lunch and some pie at a Pie shop. The pie, of course, it the carrot dangler to get me to exercise. Yummmmm!
Keep up the good work, everyone! Here's some :wizard: for those nursing injuries and illnesses.

Susie, 105-110? Good god, that's awfully hot! Thank God it's only 95 here!
Having a mixed bag myself this week. After an awesome 8 mile run on Monday, I went out and only did 1.75 before I had to stop. I have a litany of excuses (ran on a very full stomach, forgot to take Advil for my hip, first day of my um, cycle), though. :) Ha.

Susie ~ I actually do have an appointment for him on Friday so keep fingers crossed that the Dr. will be able to help him.
As far as the stretching.....The Moms In Motion group I used to be in taught the stretching at a mile. We would have guest speakers and many very knowledgeable runners would tell us to do our 1st mile as the "warm up" and then at that 1 mile mark do walking lunges, or any other "moving" stretch. Basically we were to continue moving forward, but stretch our calf muscles, hipflexors, etc.... Maybe we will try this on our long run Saturday. DS definitely has the endurance to do the DL 1/2 but gotta get rid of the pain!

Good morning INCREDIBLES!
It is definitely the dog days of summer in our neck of the woods. Haven't been on this thread as much as I would like. I feel guilty about coming here when my training isn't progressing as fast as I would like but actually I should be posting more for inspiration! :thumbsup2
I am on track and will be doing my first treadmill runs next week while I am on vacation. Planning to exercise on vacation shows me that I really have progressed more than I give myself credit for. Any tips or suggestions for doing the treadmill? I just do not want to swallow one of those big, old Iowa bugs while I am running. :rotfl:
July 11 - someone from our group had a birthday on this day. The reason I remember this is because this is my brother's BD and I remember someone said it was their special day as well. :bday: (late) to whomever it is. Please identify yourself. :teeth:
That would be me -- celebrating the 25th anniversary of my 25th birthday! ;) And never dreaming that I would be training for a half marathon when I reached that milestone!
I am so impressed with how INCREDIBLE everyone is doing this summer! :thumbsup2

Well, I skipped yesterday's 5K. After all the health issues I had this spring, I decided that even an evening 5K was a bad plan on a day where the temp hit 105. My shoes might melt on the pavement! Thankfully, the store hosting the race was offering a deal where you can get a credit for a future race in their race series, so I'll just have to keep an eye on their schedule.
Not running yesterday means that I can get in a long run today! On the treadmill. Yay? I found out mid-week last week that I have to travel for work Mon-Tues, which isn't bad, but I'll get home late on Tues and thus miss my run that night, so getting in a long run today is good, since the schedule just has me doing a 5K. Good times.
My new roommate moved in yesterday! She's my sister's best friend from college, and she's a hardcore runner and health-nut. I'm excited to have her around. I hope she's good incentive to get in better shape.

Good morning everyone. It feels like I haven't been over here in so long. I'm sticking to my plan, run/walk 3 days a week, and one day add a little distance. Today I plan to do 4.5 miles after work since it's supposed to be a bit cooler today. Otherwise, not much exciting here. Busy with summer, had a yard sale this weekend, and looking forward to our vacation at the end of august. I've had our adrs set for months with the free dining, but I find myself trying to change things up so I can do more planning.
Sounds like the heat is crazy everywhere.
Megan- I can't imagine trying to walk to the air conditioned car in 105 degree heat, never mind actually race. That's great you can get a credit toward another race in the future. That is great news about your new roomie. It is definintly a big influence to be around others on the same healthy track as you are.
Lisa- Have a fun-fabulous vacation, and I am very impressed you are planning your exercise while away. It is amazing how far we have come. I just ordered my wish shirt too!!!! I wonder if the lime green makes us run faster?
Susie-That is some pretty impressive mileage you're getting in on the bike. Hope you enjoyed the well deserved pie on saturday. I used to bike a lot before I had michael and depending on who I was with, our route often took us to a nice little breakfast nook, or an ice cream stand. I am looking forward to the day he will be able to do longer runs and handle a bike with gears. The race walking clinic sounds like fun.
Mickeys#1Fan4ever- congrats on going to ww. It is such a great plan, and if you follow it, it works. Good luck.
Amy- congrats on the 8 mile run!! THat is awesome!! And forget about the 1.75 run, we all have those days.
LIndsay-How's it going? I hope it's cooling down a bit for you so you can get back out there. It's just beautiful here today, and I think it might last 2 days til it hits 90 again. I keep trying to remember last summer when there was no need for air conditioning the entire month of july.
Vern-Sounds like a fun, busy summer in your neck of the woods too.
Alicia- Great to see you again. Isn't there anything you can do about this heat as our incredible meteorologist? Glad the wedding plans are all coming together.
Well, I"m off to work now. It really does interfere with the rest of my life someitmes. Just on payday it's so important.
Have an incredible day!!!

Kathy- things are going good here too. I got a 4.7mile run in last night. It poured for awhile early in the day and cooled things off a bit. I shouldnt complain but it still was so humid out and the sun was still heating me up even at 7pm. It is an improvement from earlier in the week though. I am hoping to get out there again tonight too. I wanted to go 5.5miles but my body wouldnt go anymore after about 4.5 and I was going past my street and my body just made a right and went home. I completed it in 57min. I think around 45min I could have used one of those energy things or even some water. Even through this heat I have not been taking anything out with me. I really need to consider getting some stuff. I hope you enjoy these cooler days. I'd love to hear about your upcoming disney trip. Where your staying ADR's etc. Feel free to PM if you'd like.
Hope everyone else is doing well too. Have an incredible day!!!

I wanted to go 5.5miles but my body wouldnt go anymore after about 4.5 and I was going past my street and my body just made a right and went home. I completed it in 57min.:rotfl: So funny. Sometimes our bodies know what we need to do more than our minds. I did just 3 miles today, had planned on 4.5, but was really struggling, so I came home. I did much better last monday and I wonder if there's a correlation to last weekends healthy eating compared to this weekend's not healthy eating. I think there may be. I hope to get out wed before work for 4.5. I'd love to share my disney plans with you. You might regret offering.:rotfl:
I just got the book The non-runner's Marathon Guide for Women- Get off your Butt and on with your training, and it's pretty funny. This is something from the book that i really liked. " It's important to realize from the start that running is not a competitive sport. The only person you're really competing against is yourself, and you have to like the odds on that. The fastest way to grow frustrated with your training proweee, or lack thereof, is to compare yourself with other runners. Unless you were born in Kenya, you're not going to win a marathon anytime soon. So with that dream shattered, let's concentrate on the whole I'd-prefer-to-not-end-up-in-a-hospital-following-my-attempt-to finish-a-marathon thing."
Now in these training programs, she has you running 4 days/week with one day of cross training. The marathoning for mortals has you 3 runs a week, one of them long, and 2 days of cross training. Wondering from you experienced incredibles what's your take on that. Is 3 days of running enough to properly train for a half marathon?

Morning INCREDIBLES!!!
Sorry I haven't been by lately, busy, busy here. DD is doing a camp this week with her friend and they are spending time together after camp including a sleepover. And there is just so much else happening, with my training and getting DD ready for sleep away camp too.
My training is going well, weight loss is slooooow but coming.
On another note, my part time job has offered me a full time position. The details have not been finalized yet, but I am seriously considering it. The hours are similar to what I work now, but the benefits are better (3 weeks vaca when I want, not when doctor closes the office) 5 sick days (I get zero now). And a pay increase, I have not had a raise in over 2 years. And no more dealing with the pain in the a$$ office manager that I work with now. We will see what happens.
Hope everyone is surviving the heat-don't push yourself if you don't feel well in the heat and humidity. Keep up the good work, sounds like everyone is doing well. I will try to check in tonight too.

Congrats, Veronica! That's great news! I hope it all works out for you.
I'm back from my two day business trip. I tried to eat well, but... well, it wasn't so bad. My weight is down .4 lbs this week. I'm not sure if that's real weight or just a fluke, so who knows. I think I'm going back to weighing myself daily - I expect the ups and downs, but then I know if my weekly weigh-in is just a fluke day (as in I'm a little dehydrated) or it's real loss. After being in super professional attire the past few days, it became apparent how much weight I put on. I was just uncomfortable in my clothes. So here's hoping that as I finish up my last six weeks of half marathon training (EEEEEEK!) that I can continue to slowly take the weight off.

Lisa - Ah, yes! Now I remember. Hope you had a great day!!!! And, I hope you are having a great vacation! For the record, I did my first half at 49 and my first full at 50.....and I'm still doing them. :teeth:  You're going to be just awesome for your first! :cool1:
Kathy - the The non-runner's Marathon Guide for Women sounds like a fun book. I'll have to look it up. I really like Marathoning for Mortals by John Bingham. When I follow a plan, I follow this one. To answer your question, yes - three days of running is enough. The MfM book assumes you will be doing some type of cross training for two days of the week in addition to the three days of running.
Coach Jenny developed the training guides for MfM. I can't remember what her plan suggests for the half - I don't have the book in front of me (husband probably loaned it to someone ). When I trained for the Goofy, Coach Jenny suggested I do strength training twice a week (on shorter run days) and cross-training (biking, swimming, hiking, etc) two days a week - non-running days. For Goofy, the plan had one day off. For the half plan, if I recall, I had two days off. Believe me, I took them!!!
It's important to get in a mixture of strenth training along with running and other x-training for endurance purposes. The strength training will help prevent injuries and will help you prepare for the longer mileage. The x-training will keep up your cardio/fitness level without the constant pounding on the pavement...and helps to prevent injuries as well. Those rest days are important as well. Your muscles need time to heal.
Whether you do 4 days of running and 1 day of x-training, or 3 days of running and 2 x-training days, is up to you. For a half, I think you'll get the same benefits. Doing 3 days of running might also prevent boredom. A lot of people also like Hal Higdons plans. Here's the one for beginners - Half-marathon training) (http://www.halhigdon.com/halfmarathon/novice.htm). You just have to go with what works for you.
Lindsay - the humidity around here is so thick you can cut it with a knife. I know - old saying. However, it's true and it's just gonna get worse. The forecast for our area is hot, hot, hot and hotter next week with temps (not heat index) in the 100's. UGH! How am I supposed to train in that? ;) As for needing a Gu or other - probably not at that stage. Maybe water or a electrolyte drink. In this heat you really need to drink up, stay hydrated. I take a hand-held water bottle whenever I go out so I can sip up whenever I want. Good luck with your training!
Veronica - congrats on the full-time job. Hope it works out for you. Sounds like it's definitely worth considering. :thumbsup2
Megan - hope to meet you and others at Disneyland. It won't be long. :woohoo: Hope your training continues to go well.
Where's Spaz?
Amy - hope your training is still going well. I admire you for getting out there in the evening. Where do you run in NYC?
I've got a question for everyone....
What do you do for cross-training? As some of you have read in my posts - I bike. I find that it REALLY helps me with my half-marathon training. I also do strength training once a week but I may start doing it at least twice a week.
Good luck with your training! Stay cool and hydrate!

Veronica - GREAT news on the job!
Megan - business trips are awesome for food, LOL!
Susie, I mostly run in Central Park. Sometimes in Riverside Park, but not all that often, because it's flat and unshady. Also, a few women have gotten attacked there in the past few weeks, and they still haven't caught the guy.
BIG news for me today on the race fronts.
1) I added a night to our Wine & Dine trip. Now we'll be staying at AKL on 9/30, and then moving to BWI for the rest of the weekend. I'm super excited to try Jiko and Boma!
2) I won a FREE entry to the Philadelphia Rock N Roll Half! While it's 2 weeks BEFORE Wine & Dine, I'm going to treat it as my last long run before the REAL half in Orlando!

Kathy that book sounds funny, I need to get a copy. I love the quote and its so true.
I have had a rough couple of runs this week. I think its a mixture of the heat/humidity, my food choices, and the fact that Im not getting a good nights sleep lately. Hopefully next run will be better. I wont get it in until saturday and I think the weather is suppose to be a little cooler....well if you consider 80 cool:confused3
I am debating on signing up for the Marine Corps Marathon 10K run on 10-31. My best friend is running the marathon with her dad and asked if my family wanted to go with them and I can do the 10K. I really really want to but have to figure out the finances. I think I need to make a decision soon since the marathon is already sold out Im sure the 10K will soon be too. Good grief, I really am the worst team mate ever! I started a post earlier in the week and well, obviously, it didn't get done. I've been a SAHM for a month now and it's definitely keeping me busy! All my time on the computer is devoted to transcription work so when I'm not doing that, I don't want to be anywhere near the computer.
Anyway, running is going well for me. I'm in week 6 of my half marathon training program. I ran 7 miles for the first time on Sunday. I was so nervous about it but it felt easy. I have 8 this Sunday and I'm so not worried! My times are really getting down there. I had a 3 miler at a 9:12 pace and then my 2 miler yesterday was a 9:10 pace. I'm usually in the 9:25-9:45 range now but I'll take those two! I feel like I've definitely come a long way!
I don't have any races on the horizon besides the half in October. None that I'm registered for anyway. I need to get on that! Sorry about the all about me post. I really really want to be a better team mate but I got files to transcribed, my DD is now a crawler and I'm corralling her all the time... but it's fun!

Anyway, I did pretty well with my running while all my family was in town. The heat has been the biggest challenge, but I am dealing the best that I can. This week I finally was able to do a normal schedule and I think I may have overdone it. I ran super hard on Tuesday for my speedwork run and have had heavy legs since. I actually am kindof liking it b/c it means I am pushing myself and should see improvement. Some of my RL running buddies reccomended that I do a 5k in August and then another in October try to get some PRs and gauge improvement so I am thinking about doing the Tour de Pain in three weekends. We shall see what happens there. I am hoping to break 26 min for the first time!

Tomorrow is a day of cleaning for me and then sunday morning if weather cooperates we are going to Eagles training camp. The Philadelphia Eagles camp is in our home town about 20 minutes away. Hello INCREDIBLES!!!
I too have not been around as much as usual, what with the busy summer and feeling under the weather for the last few days.
Congrats Amy and Susie on the free registrations for Philly!!! How cool is that?
Jess and Beth, no worries, you are not bad teammates, just busy ladies like the rest of us.
I had a stomach bug Weds and Thursday, and last night I started with a sinus infection.:headache:. But today was such a beautiful morning to run, low humidity, 50's temps, sunshine. Ran 9 in 1:34:18, my last 2 miles under 10 mins each. I hit a new low weight today too, 157.8. I am not going to make 145 before we go to DL in 5 weeks, but I think I can hit 150, which would be awesome too. It really is hard to lose weight while training, but I am doing the best I can.
Off to do laundry and cleaning around the house. We may have some guests later today, our friends are in the area on vacation and may stop by.
I will start the August thread later today and will post the link to it here.
