RV traveling through Southern Colorado ?????

Is anyone familiar with how "RV friendly" route 160 is across southern CO ? My family and I are going across the country with my inlaws in their RV. It is one you drive, about 33 feet. My father in law is worried about driving on curvy, thin, mountainous roads. We need to get from Mesa Verde to Pueblo. We have planned to drive down into New Mexico and intersect and merge with highway 25. However, 160 conveniently crosses Colorado and merges in to 25. It would save us a lot of time if that is an RV friendly route (160). If anyone is familiar with this route I"d appreciate any feedback. Thanks.

HWY 160 isn't terrible, it steep in sections. As far as being wide it won't be a problem. The tightest part has two lanes. It also carries some truck traffic.

If you are on I40 it may be quicker to continue to I25, if you RV can cruise at highway speeds. If you are up at the AZ/UT boundary I would take the time to drive south to I40 and just go over to 160.

thanks for the reply. In your last sentence, did you mean you would NOT take the time to go back to I 40 ? Also, do you (or anyone) know if there are any tunnels on 160 ? By the way, we will be in Mesa Verde (coming from the Grand Canyon area) and heading on to Pueblo. 160 looks so much more convenient than going back down into New Mexico.

What I was trying say is if you are up north, which you will be, it wouldn't be worth it to try to drive south to I40 to take freeways. But if the case was that you were already on I40 it would be a waste to take the time to drive upto 160 to then go east.


As far as tunnels there is one. A short one. If you are worried about clearance keep in mind that tractor trailers can go through it. You should be way more worried about entering hotels or catching the eve of a building as you turn a corner.

I think they were about 7-8% There are some runouts for trucks. I myself never thought they were very steep but I commonly go over a pass with 10% grades so my opinion isn't the best.
